Brantley, Peacock help Astros blank Royals

HOUSTON (AP) – Michael Brantley homered twice, Brad Peacock pitched seven innings and Josh James completed the three-hitter in Houston’s 9-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.

Peacock (3-2) allowed three hits and set a career high with 12 strikeouts to help the Astros bounce back after a 12-2 loss on Tuesday night. Peacock also rebounded after allowing seven runs in just 3 2/3 innings in his previous start. James struck out five in the last two innings.

George Springer and Carlos Correa also homered to give the Astros 16 home runs combined in their past five games.

Springer gave Houston an early lead with his MLB-leading fourth leadoff homer this season and the 28th of his career. It’s the second time this week he’s led off the game with a homer after also doing so in a 6-4 win on Monday.

Houston led 2-0 with one out and one on in the third when Brantley sent a pitch from Jorge Lopez (0-4) into the seats in right field behind the bullpen to make it 4-0.

Correa followed with his shot to straightaway center field to give Houston back-to-back homers for the third time this season. Josh Reddick singled before Yuli Gurriel doubled to chase Lopez. He was replaced by Jake Newberry and Aledmys Diaz’s sacrifice fly scored Reddick to extend the lead to 6-0.

Brantley connected again with two outs in the fourth inning to make it 7-0 and give him his fifth career multi-homer game and the first since 2015.

Lopez allowed six hits and six runs while walking three in 2 1/3 innings to remain winless in eight starts this season.

Peacock had allowed just one hit when Terrance Gore and Billy Hamilton hit consecutive singles with one out in the fifth inning. Peacock plunked Whit Merrifield to load the bases, but struck out Adalberto Mondesi and Hunter Dozier to escape the jam.

Those were the first of eight straight batters Peacock retired to end his night. He struck out six in that span, including Martin Maldonado for the first out of the seventh inning. Both Maldonado and manager Ned Yost were ejected for arguing that strikeout.

K-State lands former North Carolina RB Jordan Brown

MANHATTAN (AP) — North Carolina running back Jordan Brown is heading to Kansas State, where he will be eligible to play for new coach Chris Klieman immediately as a graduate transfer.

The former four-star recruit ran for 613 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore, but his playing time decreased last year. Brown would have been part of a crowded backfield in Chapel Hill along with Michael Carter and Antonio Williams, so he elected to transfer for his final year.

The Wildcats had no scholarship running backs returning this season, so there are plenty of carries to go around. Brown will be competing with four freshmen and Ball State transfer James Gilbert for the starting job when fall camp begins.

Brown announced his decision Tuesday.

O’Hearn, Merrifield hit grand slams; Royals rout Astros

HOUSTON (AP) – Whit Merrifield and Ryan O’Hearn each hit a grand slam to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 12-2 romp over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.

Danny Duffy (1-1) allowed six hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings for his first win this season in his third start after missing the early part of the season with a shoulder injury.

Merrifield, who had four hits and finished a double shy of the cycle, tied a career high with five RBIs. Jorge Soler added a solo homer as the Royals snapped a two-game skid and won just their fifth road game this season.

Kansas City led 2-0 in the third inning when O’Hearn hit his first career grand slam into the seats in right field off Collin McHugh (3-4) to push the lead to 6-0 and give the Royals their first grand slam this season. Billy Hamilton doubled with no outs in the fourth and Merrifield chased McHugh with his RBI single that left Kansas City up 7-0.

McHugh allowed seven hits – six for extra bases – and eight runs in three-plus innings to lose his third straight decision after winning his previous three. McHugh has allowed 24 hits and 25 runs in his past four starts, all Astros losses.

Merrifield’s grand slam came off Framber Valdez with two outs in the seventh inning to make it 12-1 as the Royals had two grand slams in a game for the first time since 2004.

The Astros entered the game having hit 11 home runs in a three-game winning streak, but had trouble getting their offense going on Tuesday night. They had managed just two hits before Alex Bregman’s solo homer to left field with one out in the sixth inning made it 8-1.

Michael Brantley followed with a single, but Carlos Correa grounded into a double play to end the inning. Correa went 0 for 4 to end a career-long 16-game hitting streak.

Soler put the Royals up 1-0 in the second with his homer to straightaway center field off McHugh.

Merrifield tripled to start the third and scored on a double by Adalberto Mondesi to make it 2-0. Alex Gordon walked before Hunter Dozier grounded into a force out that left Gordon out at second before Soler walked to load the bases and set up O’Hearn’s slam.

Dozier started at third base on Tuesday for the first time since April 20 after serving as the team’s designated hitter for most of the past three weeks while dealing with tightness in his lower back. He hit an RBI triple with one out in the fourth to extend the lead to 8-0.

UP NEXT

Royals: RHP Jorge Lopez (0-3, 5.09 ERA) will start for Kansas City in the finale on Wednesday. Lopez allowed five hits and four runs in a season-high seven innings in a 4-3 loss to Detroit in his previous outing.

Astros: RHP Brad Peacock (2-2, 5.28) is scheduled to start on Wednesday for Houston. Peacock will look to bounce back after giving up eight hits and seven runs in 3 2/3 innings of an 8-2 loss to the Twins.

Lady Indians soccer notches 10th win

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

HAYS, Kan.-It was cold and it was rainy but none of that seemed to matter as the Hays High Lady Indian soccer team shut out Nickerson 5-0 on Monday afternoon. The game was played at the Fort Hays State University soccer stadium due to the wet conditions in Hays.

It took the Lady Indians one minute and 35 seconds to notch what would be the game winner as Kallie Leiker sailed a shot over the Lady Panther goalie to make it 1-0 off of an assist from Savannah Schneider.  In the 24th minute Sophie Humphrey added the last goal of the first half on a goal that was again assisted by Schneider. Hays High would add three second half goals from Schneider, Taleia McCrae, and a penalty kick from Maggie Robben.

The Lady Indians improve to 10-1-4 and will travel to Wichita on Thursday to finish out the regular season against Trinity Academy.

Perkins finishes tied for 27th at Central Regional

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Fort Hays State women’s golfer Hannah Perkins wrapped up her senior campaign at the 2019 NCAA Division II Central Super Regional Championship (May 6-7) this week. Perkins finished the tournament in a tie or 27th individually. The senior fired identical rounds of 75 in the first two rounds before finishing with an 85 in the final round. Perkins finished the tournament at 22-over par (235) for the week.

When asked what was going through her head during the first nine holes of the tournament after recording a 2-under (34) score, “The entire front nine I just played so relaxed” said Perkins. “I was hitting the ball really well so had lots of confidence in my swing.”

Perkins finished the season with a 78.0 scoring average over the course of 22 rounds played. The Wichita, Kan. native posted her lowest scores in four rounds at Muskogee Country Club in her career in both the first and second round (75) this week.

“After last week’s [MIAA] tournament, I was happy how the day ended up. Obviously, I had a couple bumps in the road on the 12th and 15th holes, but I just tried to keep my head on straight and realize there was a lot of golf to be played and there are still lots of birdie chances at this course,” said Perkins.

Southwestern Oklahoma State took home the team title with an aggregate score of 893. Arkansas Tech claimed a runner-up finish with an 897, while Northeastern State (913) finished third. Peerada Piddon of Arkansas Tech captured the individual title with a 3-over par (216) finish for the week.

“After how I played at conference I was just glad to be here. I didn’t finish the day how I wanted but I’m happy with how my senior season played out,” said Perkins. “I am just sad to see it end.”

Schulte added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and in the seven the Monarchs Emma Pope scored on a passed ball to give TMP an 8-2 lead.

Springer, Correa, Chirinos homer, Astros beat Royals 6-4

HOUSTON (AP) – It’s no secret that Houston’s lineup has power from top to bottom. The Astros continued to show off that power on Monday night.

George Springer, Carlos Correa and Robinson Chirinos each homered to lead the Houston Astros to a 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals.

The Astros have hit 11 home runs in the last three games.

“You guys have seen this before, it’s not something new,” Chirinos said. “I feel like this lineup from one to nine can do damage. Even the guys on the bench.”

Springer opened the first with his 11th home run of the season, including three leadoff drives. He added an RBI double in the eighth.

Correa had three hits. He opened the second by extending his hitting streak to a career-high 16 games with a home run.

“It just feels healthy,” Correa said. “It just feels good to step to the plate, to be able to be quick, to be able to let it go and to be able to swing hard, to be able the things that I want to do that I work on in the cage.”

Chirinos’ two-run drive in the sixth put the Astros back in front at 5-4.

“This place is a little unforgiving,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “You make a mistake, try to go down and away with a fastball in the first inning to Springer and ended up being middle up. I think a slider to Correa. The one to Chirinos, you just take your hat off, there was a nice piece of hitting.”

Hunter Dozier hit a two-run homer in the Royals fourth. Adalberto Mondesi’s two-run homer in the fifth gave Kansas City a 4-3 lead.

“Again, we talk about the ballpark here, that’s why you’re never out of the game,” Yost said. “You can get a bloop single and then a fly ball is a home run. Mondesi’s was legit, Dozier’s he smoked it pretty good. That’s one of the advantages of playing in this park.”

Gerrit Cole (3-4) yielded four runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

“I was glad I got through the first,” Cole said. “I was clean, I was focused, so that was good. I thought the stuff was good and the command was good. Those two fastballs were just unfortunate.”

Hector Rondon got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, thanks to a barehanded play by second baseman Jose Altuve on a soft chopper to get Kelvin Gutierrez at first and end the inning.

Altuve’s defensive gem was one of several the Astros made.

“Our defense I often say is underrated and underappreciated because we don’t talk about it enough, but we have the athletes, and we have the positioning to be really good,” Houston manager AJ Hinch said.

Roberto Osuna pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

Jakob Junis (3-3) allowed five runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Royals have lost four of five.

“The first two home runs, those were just bad pitches,” Junis said. “Missed my spot over the plate, but I thought I made pretty good pitches with bases loaded, limited the damage on that. Had a quick fourth and fifth and went out for the sixth feeling good. I felt stronger as the game went on.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOSE

Altuve turned 29 years old and the fans serenaded him with “Happy Birthday” to start the ninth inning. Altuve showed his appreciation by applauding the fans.

ROSTER MOVES

Royals: Recalled RHP Glenn Sparkman from Triple-A Omaha and optioned RHP Ben Lively to Omaha.
