Young strong in Mariners’ win over Royals

SEATTLE (AP) — Chris Young pitched eight efficient innings, Justin Smoak and Dustin Ackley homered, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 Saturday night.

Young (3-0) allowed three hits, while striking out three and walking none. The tall right-hander needed just 96 pitches, setting down the lineup in order in five of his eight innings.

It is the first time Young has thrown at least eight innings since he tossed a complete game for the San Diego Padres in 2008. Young didn’t play last season and pitched sparingly from 2009-12.

Fernando Rodney pitched around a two-out single in the ninth inning to record his 11th save in 12 attempts.

Royals starter Yordano Ventura (2-2) allowed three runs in 6 1-3 innings. The right-hander issued a season-high four walks, while notching a season-low three strikeouts.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs turned their attention to offense on the final day of the draft, choosing running back De’Anthony Thomas in the fourth round and quarterback Aaron Murray in the fifth round Saturday.

With two picks in the sixth round, the Chiefs added a pair of offensive linemen in Zach Fulton out of Tennessee and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif out of McGill, a school in Canada. Both of them will be able to provide depth for a unit depleted by free agency.

The Chiefs bolstered their defense the first two days of the draft, grabbing defensive end Dee Ford in Thursday night’s first round and defensive back Phillip Gaines in the third round Friday.

Kansas City did not have a seventh-round selection.

The Hays High Indians shook off Friday night’s disappointing 3-2 loss to Salina Central with a clean, well-played ball game on Saturday afternoon.  The Indians scored four unanswered runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings to beat Goddard 4-2 in the final game of the Western Plains Diamond Classic.

Hays fell behind 2-0 in the top of the second inning when the Lions scored on an double by Austin Noble and a ground out by Josh Oakley.  Starter Marcus Altman settled down after that allowing only six more base runners through the remainder of the game.

Hays got onto the board for the first time in the bottom of the third inning with a sacrifice fly by Kade Parker to score courtesy runner Garrett Pfannenstiel to cut the Goddard lead down to 2-1.  Goddard threatened to score again with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the fourth but Altman struck out a batter and senior catcher Brady Bieker picked off a runner at first  base for the third out.

Hays responded to the defensive plays with a two run double by Jared Haynes to score Dalton Stout and Layne Downing, giving the Indians a 3-2 lead.  Hays added another run in the fifth when courtesy runner Adam Klaus scored on a wild pitch for the 4-2 difference.

Goddard did threaten in the seventh with runners at second and third with two outs, but runner interference was called on a ground ball to end the game.

Hays moves to 12-6 on the year and finishes the Western Plains Diamond Classic 3-1.  It is the same record that Salina Central finished the three day classic with, but due to the head to head match-up won by Salina Central the Mustangs won the title.  It is the fourth Diamond Classic crown for Salina Central and first since 2008.  Goddard dropped to 5-13.  Hays has now won nine of their last ten games.

Marcus Altman was the winning pitcher on Saturday going all seven innings allowing two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out four.

Hays will travel to Liberal on Tuesday to finish the season.  Hays can also wrap up their third consecutive Western Athletic Conference title that day as well.

Game Highlights

Royals get 16 singles in 6-1 win over Seattle

SEATTLE (AP) — Jason Vargas used his “accelerator” to control the strike zone and it meant his first road victory of the season. It came at a place where he felt like home.

Vargas allowed three hits over seven innings and the Kansas City Royals had 16 hits — all singles — in a 6-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night.

Vargas (3-1), who pitched for the Mariners for four seasons (2009-12), struck out six without a walk. He is 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA in four career starts against his former team. His 2.30 ERA at Safeco Field is tied for the seventh best for a starter in park history

Vargas signed a four-year, free-agent deal with the Royals in November.

“When he’s on his game, like he was tonight, he really works the accelerator really well,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “He pushes down with the fastball, backs off with the changeup. Good curveball.

“What pitchers like Vargie do so well is they disrupt the opposition hitters’ timing. He did that extremely well tonight.”

Vargas said controlling the strike zone is always his goal “but the execution is not always the same. … Tonight I was able control counts and able to make pitches down in the strike zone.”

Salvador Perez, Eric Gordon and Eric Hosmer had three hits each for the Royals while Nori Aoki and Lorenzo Cain had two each.

The Mariners have scored just two runs and have 10 hits over the past three games.

Brandon Maurer (1-1) took the loss, allowing 14 hits, six runs — four earned — and did not walk or strike out a batter. The 14 hits Maurer allowed were just one short of the team record set by Greg Hibbard on May 24, 1994.

“This was a weird, weird game,” Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. “Maurer threw the ball extremely well, gave up two hard hits. They were persistent, put the bat on the ball and found some holes.

“It was one of those nights. I didn’t look up to see if it was a full moon or not. It was weird.”

The first hit Vargas allowed came in the third, a one-out single by Mike Zunino. Shortstop Alcides Escobar knocked the hard grounder down but it rolled a few feet away. The other hits were Dustin Ackley’s line single to center in the fifth and Robinson Cano’s ground single to right in the seventh.

“He mixed it up and threw strikes,” Mariners third baseman Will Bloomquist said of Vargas. “I saw a couple changeups and they were kind of Jamie Moyer-like, coming out of the back of his hand and falling off pretty good. He threw the ball well.”

The Royals pieced together rallies off Maurer. Only one run scored on a hit. The rest scored on an error, a sacrifice fly, a double play and two on fielder’s choices.

“We don’t care how we get the runs,” Hosmer said. “Any way we can produce them. That’s what we need to do. As an offense, we just have to bear down and find ways to produce runs.”

Aoki opened the game with a single to right followed by Hosmer’s single to right, with Aoki sprinting to third. Aoki scored on Billy Butler’s bouncer to Bloomquist, who tried to start a double play but threw wildly to second, pulling Cano off the bag.

Initially, the umpires ruled Hosmer safe on an apparent error but Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon challenged the call. After a review, it was ruled that Cano dragged his left toe across the bag while in possession of the ball. Hosmer was ruled out. Perez bounced into a double play to end the inning.

Hosmer’s sacrifice fly in the third put the Royals up 2-0.

Mariners shortstop Brad Miller’s throwing error in the fourth allowed two more runs.

Perez opened with a single followed by a clean bunt single by Gordon. Johnny Giavotella then bounced a potential double-play ball to short but Miller’s flip to second sailed into right field and Perez scored.

Gordon would later score the second run on Cain’s double-play grounder.

Kansas City made it 5-0 in the sixth when Butler scored on Giavotella’s fielder’s choice.

Cain’s one-out single in the eighth scored Perez from second to make it 6-0, ending Maurer’s evening.

The Mariners scored in the eighth off reliever Aaron Crow. Miller drew a one-out walk. Pinch-hitter James Jones then stroked a two-out double into the right-field corner. Miller had stopped at third then trotted home on right-fielder Aoki’s throwing error.

NOTES: Mariners LHP James Paxton, who started the season at 2-0 before suffering a strained lat muscle, threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session before the game. RHP Taijuan Walker (right shoulder impingement) will have his first bullpen session Sunday. There is no timetable for either pitcher. Also, RHP Stephen Pryor, coming off shoulder surgery, is back with Triple-A Tacoma. . Kyle Seager was a late scratch for the Mariners because of flu-like symptoms. Bloomquist replaced him. . The Royals pre-game move to promote Giavotella was necessary because of Omar Infante’s ailing back. Infante missed Thursday’s game and will be rested for the series. Giavotella was hitting .352 for Triple-A Omaha. To make room, the club sent RHP Michael Mariot to Omaha.

Chiefs grab Phillip Gaines with third-round pick

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs selected defensive back Phillip Gaines from Rice in the third round of the NFL draft Friday night, helping a pass defense that was shredded by Indianapolis in the playoffs.

Kansas City was in need of safety help after losing starter Kendrick Lewis in free agency. It is possible that Gaines could ultimately make the switch to that position.

The Chiefs did not have a second-round pick after sending it to San Francisco in the deal that netted them quarterback Alex Smith. That made it a long night for general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid, who had to wait until the 87th overall pick before nabbing a player.

Kansas City selected pass rusher Dee Ford in the first round Thursday night.

Salina Central 3 – Hays 2

Hays and Salina Central played an intense final game to the second day of the Western Plains Diamond Classic on Friday night.  The game started over an hour late due to the first three games each running long.  The final game of the night took just 80 minutes to complete.

Salina Central posted a 3-0 lead after the top half of the second inning, scoring an unearned run in the first off of two Indian errors.  Back to back RBI doubles by Salina Central put them in front at 3-0.  Hays plated their only two runs in the bottom of the second innings.  Hays loaded the bases on three singles by Connor Rule, Dalton Stout, and Layne Downing when Jared Haynes walked to drive in Rule.  With two out and Downing was able to score from third base on a wild pitch getting the Indians with one run at 3-2.  There would be no more scoring for the night.

Central starting pitcher JW Maldaner retired the next 11 Indians until the sixth inning.  Kade Parker walked and courtesy runner Garrett Pfannenstiel stole second them moved to throw on the pick-off attempt.  Hays though couldn’t capitalize with the runner in scoring position.

Hays had one last chance in the seventh when Jared Haynes lined a two out single to right field keeping the Indians alive.  Pinch runner Adam Klaus stole second on a close play, but then was thrown out trying to steal third to end the game.

Hays’ eight game winning streak comes to a close and falls to 11-6.  Salina Central moves to 7-8 and at 3-0 in the Western Plains Diamond Classic has claimed the championship with one day remaining.

Hays will play Goddard at 2:30 for the final game of the three day classic.  The game can be heard starting at 2:15 on 96.9 KFIX.

SEATTLE (AP) – Hisashi Iwakuma scattered four hits over eight innings and Corey Hart hit an RBI single in the third inning to lift the Seattle Mariners over the Kansas City Royals 1-0 on Thursday night.

Fernando Rodney worked around a pair of walks in the ninth to earn his 10th save in 11 chances.

Danny Duffy (1-3) gave up one run and two hits in six-plus innings. He has allowed two hits and a run in each of his first two starts this season after pitching out of the bullpen to begin the year.

Chiefs draft Auburn DE Dee Ford in first round

By DAVE SKRETTA
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs selected Auburn defensive end Dee Ford with the No. 23 overall pick in the NFL draft Thursday night, landing a potential replacement for Tamba Hali or Justin Houston.

With only one selection in the first two rounds, Kansas City was thought to be trying to trade out of its pick. But general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid wound up with Ford, eschewing a wide receiver or defensive back that could have filled bigger holes.

Hali turns 31 in November while Houston is due to become a free agent after the upcoming season. Ford will likely move to outside linebacker and be groomed as a replacement.

Ford made 10 1/2 sacks for the Tigers last season.

Kansas forward Andrew White III leaving program

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Guard Andrew White III is transferring from Kansas in search of more playing time after two seasons in which he failed to break into the regular rotation.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self announced White’s decision in a statement Thursday night.

White played in 25 games as a freshman and showed a deft touch from the perimeter, but he got lost in the mix last season, averaging just 5.9 minutes while appearing in 19 games.

White said that Self told him “it would be questionable to break into the rotation,” so he decided to explore other options. White did not say where he would transfer.

His decision came one week after starting point guard Naadir Tharpe announced he would transfer closer to his home in Massachusetts for his final year of eligibility.

Indians Wendy Zimmerman to Compete for FHSU

Most any coach at Hays High School will tell you that Wendy Zimmerman is a talented athlete. Unfortunately injuries have kept the senior from training fully over her high school career.  But through all the injuries, Zimmerman kept coming back and competing.  That attitude and determination also helped her land a spot on the Fort Hays State University Track and Field team.  She signed her letter of intent Thursday at Hays High School.

Zimmerman says the first time realized she could compete at the collegiate level was during her senior year of track when she cleared 5’6″ in the high jump and colleges started to contact her.

Zimmerman qualified for the 2013 State Track Meet in four events.  She finished third in the high jump and ninth in the triple jump.  Zimmerman also was part of the ninth place 4×400 meter relay team and qualified in the 400 meters.
