Hays 7 – Word of Life 6 (8 inn.)
If the opening game of the 2014 Western Plains Diamond Classic is any indication as to how the next three games to go, fans are in for a treat this year.  The Hays High Indians defeated Word of Life 7-6 in eight innings to open up the three days of baseball games.

Word of Life held a 1-0 lead on a fielding error in the top of the second inning until Marcus Altman sent a towering solo home run over the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1.  Starting pitcher Layne Downing gave the Indians their first lead of the game with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fourth.  Downing was pretty much on cruise control until he ran into a bases loaded jam in the top of fourth when Jazz Chisholm gave the Fire a 5-3 lead with grand slam homerun.

Jared Haynes scored in the bottom of the sixth and then was matched by a single run by Word of Life in the top of the seventh to set up a 6-4 lead for the Fire heading to the bottom of the seventh.

Hays loaded the bases on a hit by pitch, single and walk with now outs.  Dalton Stout grounded into a double play but was able to plate Marcus Altman and move pinch runner Adam Klaus to third.  Still trailing 6-5 Trenton Henningson sent a hard ground ball towards right field that was cut off by first baseman Jack Halloran.  Holloran dove for first base in an attempt to record the third out, but dropped the baseball allowing Henningson to reach safely and Klaus to score from third to tie the game 6-6.

Kade Parker then relieved Downing on the mound for the top of the eighth needing just ten pitches to get through four batters.  In the bottom of the eighth, Jared Haynes walked to open the inning and moved to second base on a one out single by Cole Schumacher.  Altman lined out to left field, bringing Parker to the plate.  Parker sent his fourth hit of the game to left field, scoring Haynes from second and giving the Indians the 7-6 victory.

Parker (4-1) picks up the win in relief.  Derrick Begane (2-2) takes the loss in relief, allowing a run in the eighth inning.

Hays will face Great Bend at 7:00 Thursday night to cap off the first day of the 2014 Western Plains Diamond Classic.  The game can be heard on 96.9 KFIX.

Shields pitches Royals past Padres

SAN DIEGO (AP) – James Shields scattered seven hits over seven innings, Eric Hosmer drove in a season-high four runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the San Diego Padres 8-0 Wednesday.

The Royals scored three times in the first and that was plenty for Shields (4-3). He struck out four, walked two and threw 118 pitches.

Two relievers finished for the Royals. The Padres were shut out for a major league-high sixth time this season. San Diego has lost six of eight overall.

Andrew Cashner (2-5) lasted a season-low four innings.

Herman closes out season with seventh-place finish at Midwest/Central Regional

FHSU Sports Information

Fort Hays State junior Trey Herman closed out his 2013-14 season at the Midwest/Central Regional on Wednesday at the Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Mo. Herman finished in a tie for seventh at 5-over par for the three-round tournament. Herman was the third-best individual in the standings not on a team advancing to the NCAA Championships, but only the top two individuals advance.

Herman started Wednesday in a tie for 32nd at 7-over par and saw that total balloon to 9-over after two bogeys in his first three holes (he started on the back nine for the second straight day). But he did not go quietly as he quickly caught fire by posting an eagle 3 at the par-5 13th hole. After a par at 14, he knocked in back-to-back birdies at the par-3 15th and par-5 16th. He finished his first nine of the day at 2-under par on a back nine that he had played 8-over par through the first two rounds.

Herman had made four straight pars until carding his third bogey of the day at the 3rd hole, but then back-to-back birdies at the par-4 5th and the par-5 6th pushed his round to 3-under par. Unfortunately, another bogey at the 7th hole pushed his round back to 2-under and he made par at the final two holes, carding a round of 70.

When he finished his round, Herman had gained 12 spots from 32nd to 20th. He got in the clubhouse early and watched a majority of the field come back to him and he moved all the way up to a tie for seventh by the end of the day, a gain of 25 spots in the standings.

Unfortunately Herman’s big climb in the standings was not quite enough to get to the NCAA Championship, as only the top two individuals in the standings on teams that did not qualify move on. Michael Colgate of Nebraska-Kearney won the tournament at 4-under par overall and Marcos Sevilla of Southeastern Oklahoma State finished third at 1-over par overall. They will be the two advancing to the NCAA Championship site as individuals. Herman and Ross Miller of Minnesota State-Mankato tied for seventh at 5-over par. They rounded out the top four individuals not on qualifying teams.

Teams that moved on to the NCAA Championships include Malone University, Central Missouri, Saginaw Valley State, and Central Oklahoma.

Herman finished the tournament with rounds of 74 (+2), 77 (+5), and 70 (-2). He had a very successful year triggered by his success at the Kansas Amateur last summer, where he topped a very talented field in stroke play, earned the No. 1 seed for match play, and finished as a semifinalist. He finished second in the MIAA Individual Point Standings this season and earned All-MIAA honors. Second is the highest any Tiger has ever finished in the MIAA point standings. Herman will look to carry this success into his senior year of 2014-15.

Kansas to host Florida in SEC/Big 12 Challenge

Kansas Athletics

IRVING, Texas – National powers and defending regular-season men’s basketball champions in each of their respective conferences, Kansas and Florida will square off in the second SEC/Big 12 Challenge, Dec. 5 in historic Allen Fieldhouse, the two leagues and ESPN announced Wednesday.

The Kansas-Florida contest is one of two in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge that will pit preseason-ranked teams in the early ESPN.com “Fab 50” ratings. Kansas is at No. 4, while Florida is No. 7 in the early poll. No. 6 Texas will play at No. 1 Kentucky on Dec. 5 in the Challenge. Last season, the Big 12 won the Challenge by capturing wins in seven of the 10 meetings.

In last season’s inaugural Challenge, then-No. 19 Florida defeated then-No. 13 Kansas, 67-61, on Dec. 10 in Gainesville. The two teams would climb the national rankings for the remainder of the season with Florida at No. 1 the final four weeks of 2013-14 and Kansas as high as No. 5 on Feb. 24. Both teams won their regular-season conference championships and Florida won the SEC Tournament, as well. KU finished 25-10 and 14-4 in the 2013-14 season and entered the NCAA Tournament a No. 2 seed, while Florida went 36-3 overall, 18-0 in the SEC and was the overall No. 1 seed of the 2014 NCAA tourney.

Though there have only been five games in this series, the Kansas-Florida matchups have been highly touted. Kansas leads 3-2, with three of the five meetings being top-10 nationally-ranked contests. Four of the five meetings has seen at least one team ranked in the top 10.

In the first meeting, No. 5 Kansas defeated No. 6 Florida 69-63 in Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 7, 1994. KU was ranked No. 3 when the Jayhawks defeated the Gators 69-64 on Jan. 11, 1996, in Gainesville. No. 7 Florida bested No. 2 Kansas in the third meeting 83-73 on Nov. 29, 2003, in the consolation finals of the Preseason NIT at Madison Square Garden. Prior to last season’s meeting in Gainesville, No. 10 Kansas defeated top-ranked Florida 82-80 in overtime on Nov. 25, 2006, in the championship game of the Las Vegas Invitational. Florida went on to win its second-straight NCAA National Championship that season, while Kansas claimed the national title the following year in 2008.
