The Monarchs jumped out early in the first game, scoring three in the first. Down 4-3, they score seven in the fourth and would never give up the lead. The Monarchs are now 9-3. They host Russell/Victoria Tuesday.
In March, Hays High School Athletics Director and Assistant Principal Clint Albers turned in his resignation. Approximately one month later Chris Michaelis has been named to that same position at the high school.
Michaelis has been a teacher and coach at Hays High for past 18 years. He previously taught in Manhattan at a private school.
Michaelis coached the girls’ soccer program for 17 years and the boys program for nearly as long minus a small hiatus in the early 2000’s. He has also been a teacher at Hays High during his entire tenure at Hays.
Michaelis said he’s considered taking the next step in becoming an athletic director or assistant principal and the opportunity to do so at Hays High School was the perfect scenario.
Over the past couple of sports seasons, he was also named the events coordinator which gave him a behind the scenes look at how things worked, well before the job ever came open.
Michaelis will take over his new duties July 1, 2014.

CLEVELAND (AP) – Corey Kluber struck out a career-high 11 and pitched a four-hitter for his first complete game, and David Murphy and Asdrubal Cabrera drove in two runs apiece, leading the Indians to a 5-1 win over the Royals on Thursday.
Kluber (2-2) didn’t walk a batter and let Cleveland manager Terry Francona give some needed rest to his bullpen.
Murphy and Cabrera delivered big hits in the Indians’ five-run fifth off Bruce Chen (1-2), who controlled Cleveland’s lineup for four innings.
The Indians have won four of five to get back to .500.
The Royals scored an unearned run off Kluber in the seventh when Omar Infante singled and scored when Indians first baseman Nick Swisher made a half-hearted attempt at Mike Moustakas’ grounder, which got by him for an error and rolled all the way into the right-field corner.
Other than that, Kansas City’s hitters were unable to do much against Kluber, whose previous long outing was 8 2-3 innings last July against the White Sox. He’s 3-0 in four career starts against the Royals.
Chen coasted through four innings, dominating the Indians with a mix of off-speed pitches before they touched him for five runs and chased him in the fifth.
The left-hander retired 11 straight before Carlos Santana led off with a double, snapping an 0-for-16 slide with just his third hit in 48 at-bats. Michael Brantley followed with a single to center for his team-leading 19th RBI, giving Cleveland a 1-0 lead.
The Indians didn’t stop there as Murphy slapped a two-run single to left, and Cabrera made it 5-0 with his double down the left-field line to end Chen’s outing.
It was Cleveland’s biggest inning this season, and it gave Kluber more than enough cushion to finish off the Royals.
Kansas City managed just one hit off Kluber in the first four innings, and then the Royals ran their way out of a scoring chance in the fifth.
Alcides Escobar singled with two outs and Jarrod Dyson followed with a base hit. Escobar hesitated rounding second, and his indecision cost him as Brantley threw him out from center trying to take third.
The Royals turned a nifty double play to end the first.
With a Cabrera at third, first baseman Eric Hosmer fielded Jason Kipnis’ hard grounder, stepped on first and threw home. Catcher Brett Hayes made a sweeping tag on Cabrera, who was called out. Crew chief Bill Miller called for a review to see if Hayes had blocked the plate, but the call was confirmed.
NOTES: Kluber’s complete game was the first for the Indians since Justin Masterson’s on June 30 last season. … Brantley came in leading the Indians in virtually every offensive category, including batting average, runs, hits, steals and RBIs. … The Indians and Cincinnati Reds entered the day as the only teams yet to play in an extra-inning game this season. … Royals 1B coach Rusty Kuntz returned to the team after undergoing surgery surgery on his broken left arm. Kuntz was struck during pregame batting practice on Monday. … The Royals open a three-game series in Baltimore on Friday with Yordano Ventura (1-1) facing Ubaldo Jimenez (0-3). … The Indians are out West for a three-game interleague series in San Francisco.
The Fort Hays State men’s basketball program has has added two local standouts to their roster for the 2014-15 season.
The Tigers announced on Twitter Thursday that Plainville’s Hadley Gillium and Hoxie’s Kade Spresser have committed to play at FHSU.
Gillium, a 6’5″ forward, averaged 21 points and 14.5 rebounds this past season leading the Cardinals to a runner-up finish at the class 2A state tournament in Manhattan.
Spresser, a 6’1″ guard, led the Indians to a runner-up finished at the 1A-Division 1 state tournament this past season, averaging 20.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.
The two join Dom Samac who is transferring to Fort Hays State after two seasons at Denver University. The 6’9″ forward from Zagreb, Croatia will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. Samac played in 17 games, making 11 starts for the Pioneers, averaging 3.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 2013-14. He appeared in six games as a freshman.
CLEVELAND (AP) – Jason Kipnis drove in Nick Swisher with a two-out double in the seventh inning, sending the Cleveland Indians to a 5-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night.
Kipnis ripped his double off Kelvin Herrera (0-1) into the gap in right-center, deep enough to easily score Swisher, who reached on a two-out single. The Indians tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on pinch-hitter Lonnie Chisenhall’s bloop RBI single.
Bryan Shaw (1-0) finished the seventh and got one out in the eighth. Cody Allen retired two, and John Axford worked the ninth for his AL-leading eighth save.
Michael Bourn had three hits and two RBIs for the Indians.
Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas hit back-to-back homers in the second for Kansas City.
Fort Hays State junior Trey Herman earned All-MIAA honors for the 2013-14 season, helping Fort Hays State to a 10th-place finish at the MIAA Championships in Lawrence, Kan. The tournament was held on the Championship Course at Alvamar Golf Club, a par-72 layout.

MIAA Championships, was overtaken by Central Missouri’s Travis Mays for MIAA Golfer of the Year. Mays entered the tournament five points back of Herman, but leaped in front by tying for second at the MIAA Championships, generating 13.5 points to his total to finish with 43.5 for the year. Herman tied for 15th, gaining just 0.33 points and finishing the year at 35.33, good for second in the point standings.
By finishing second in the overall point standings for the year, Herman earned All-MIAA honors, the first for a Tiger since Kevin Quinley earned the honors in 2011 by finishing eighth in the point standings. Herman is the highest-ever finisher for FHSU in the point standings race.
Herman shot 9-over par for the three-round tournament with rounds of 76, 74, and 75. He had a rough start to his final day, 3-over par through his first two holes, but played the remaining 16 in even par. It was not enough to reel in the red-hot Mays, who started the day at 1-under par overall and came back to the field just a bit with a 2-over 74 on the final day.
To compare the two golfers in the MIAA sanctioned events for the year, Herman tied for second at Nebraska-Kearney, tied for third at Central Missouri in the fall, then finished eighth at Central Oklahoma and a tie for 15th at the MIAA Championships in the spring. Mays tied for seventh at Nebraska-Kearney, tied for ninth at Central Missouri, finished seventh at Central Oklahoma, and then tied for second at the MIAA Championships. Though neither won a MIAA sanctioned tournament this year, they were the steadiest players in the conference.
Central Missouri, the No. 5 ranked team in NCAA Division II, won the MIAA Championship Tournament with a three-round score of 867 and in the process sealed first place in the regular season team standings as well with 56 points. Northeastern State finished second in the tournament (883) and in the regular season standings (49 points), and Central Oklahoma finished third in both as well (902 and 43 points). FHSU finished 10th at the tournament (938) and was eighth in the team standings with 28.5 points.
Grant Storey tied for 31st at the tournament with rounds of 75, 80 and 77 for a total of 232. Jeff Heptig was eight strokes back of that in a tie for 47th, shooting rounds of 80, 85, and 75. Nick VonLintel tied for 49th with rounds of 78, 80, and 83. Sam Christianson was 58th with rounds of 83, 85, and 83.
Herman will now wait to see if he is selected to compete at regionals as an individual. Selections are made on Friday, April 25 for the regional.

Fort Hays State softball remained eighth in the second version of the NCAA Division II Central Region Rankings, released Wednesday. The Tigers debuted at No. 8 in last week’s poll, and one other version will be released leading up to the NCAA Division II Softball Selection Show, set for March 5 at 10 a.m. ET. The eight teams selected will advance to the NCAA Regional, set for May 9-11.
The Central Region is made up of teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the Great American Conference, with three automatic bids being given to winners of the conference tournaments. The other five slots in the NCAA Regional are awarded on an at-large basis, with the top two seeds serving as tournament hosts. The winner of each regional site will advance to the NCAA Super Regional, May 16-17. The NCAA Championships will take place May 22-26 in Salem, Va.
Emporia State, previously second, moved up to No. 1 in the regional rankings with a 29-10 Division II record and a 38-10 In-Region record. ESU swept the Tigers at home in a mid-March doubleheader, and is currently tied for first in the MIAA standings with Central Oklahoma. ESU went 3-1 in MIAA last week, sweeping Central Missouri and splitting with Southwest Baptist at home.
Winona State (32-6 DII, 22-6 In-Region) jumped three spots to second in the rankings after going 8-0 last week with sweeps of Minnesota State (previously No. 1 regionally) and Wayne State (previously No. 9 regionally). The Tigers were scheduled to play Winona State at the Teri Mathis Tournament earlier this season, which was canceled due to wintry weather.
Minnesota State-Mankato dropped three spots to No. 3 in the second version of the rankings, losing two games to Winona State but picking up sweeps over Wayne State, Augustana and Sioux Falls. MSU-Mankato holds a 36-8 Division II record and a 31-6 In-Region record. FHSU defeated MSU-Mankato, 11-3, earlier this season in Bentonville, Ark.
Augustana (35-10 DII, 29-10 In-Region) and Central Oklahoma (36-12 DII and In-Region) each slid one spot to fourth and fifth, respectively, from last week’s rankings. FHSU split with UCO earlier this season in Edmond, Okla., snapping the Bronchos’ 35-game home winning streak with a 4-1 win in Game 1 of a doubleheader.
Missouri Western (31-15 DII and In-Region) and Southeastern Oklahoma (32-14 DII and In-Region) flipped spots for the week. MWSU moved from seventh to No. 6 while Southeastern slipped to No. 7 as one of three teams from the GAC in the rankings. MWSU took both games from the Tigers earlier this month and were idle last week.
Staying at eighth, FHSU (26-17 DII, 24-16 In-Region) did not play last week but closes out its regular season with home and away doubleheaders against Nebraska-Kearney, April 26-27, respectively. Senior Day for the Tigers is Saturday (April 26) with games at 2 and 4 p.m.
Two squads from the GAC close out the rankings as Southern Arkansas (28-22 DII, 25-20 In-Region) jumped into the ninth spot and East Central (29-22 DII and In-Region) remained 10th. Southern Arkansas went 3-1 last week against Southern Nazarene, and has picked up eight wins this season against teams that are ranked regionally throughout the nation. East Central swept Rogers State and split with Northwestern Oklahoma State in doubleheaders last week.
