NCKTech LOCAL SPORTS BANNERBy Dustin Armbruster

Tigers Hold Steady at No. 6 in Central Region Rankings

NCKTech LOCAL SPORTS BANNER
FHSU Sports Information
Fort Hays State men’s basketball held its position for the third straight week in the NCAA Division II Central Region Rankings, released on Wednesday (Mar. 5). Fort Hays State checks in at No. 6 once again, heading into the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City.

The Tigers were No. 6 in the first set of rankings, released on Feb. 19, and have held that position ever since. Also holding steady this week was Winona State at No. 5 and Arkansas Tech at No. 7. With a win over current No. 4 region ranked Northwest Missouri State this past weekend, Central Missouri takes over the top spot in the rankings this week, leaping current No. 2 Minnesota State-Mankato. Missouri Southern jumped from fifth to third this week.

There has been constant shake up in the teams listed in the No. 8 through No. 10 spots. Washburn jumped in at No. 8 this week after not being in the previous rankings, but it will be hard for the Ichabods to survive staying in that spot after losing in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament to Northeastern State. Minnesota State-Moorhead, a NSIC Tournament semifinalist, is No. 9 this week and Arkansas-Monticello debuts at No. 10 on the list this week.

The Tigers are looking for their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance under head coach Mark Johnson, now in his 13th year.

Below are the Central Region Rankings for Wednesday, March 5…

FHSU Women up one spot to No. 9 in Central Region rankings

FHSU Sports Information
Fort Hays State Women’s Basketball moved up one spot to No. 9 in the third version of the NCAA Central Region rankings, released Wednesday (March 5).  Eight teams are selected to play in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament at the end of the season, but automatic bids are given to teams that win conference postseason tournaments.

The Tigers (20-7, 12-7 MIAA), ranked 10th in the previous two rankings, filled the ninth spot, previously held by Minot State (which dropped out of the rankings).  FHSU is 16-7 against NCAA Divison II teams – with all matchups coming against regional opponents.

At the top of the poll, Harding and Emporia State swapped first and second positions, as Central Missouri, Wayne State (Neb.) and PIttsburg State rounded out the top 5.  NSIC teams Minnesota State, Northern State and Concordia-St. Paul (which won the NSIC Tournament) are slotted sixth through eighth.  CSP earned an automatic bid to the regional tournament with the postseason title.  MIAA foe Missouri Southern re-entered the rankings at No. 10 after falling out last week.

FHSU and MSSU square off in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament on Thursday, March 6 in Kansas City, Mo.

Eight teams will be selected to the NCAA Tournament from the region, but three automatic bids will be at stake from the MIAA, NSIC, and GAC. Teams outside the top 10 of the region rankings could steal a bid to the tournament by winning their conference tournament.

Phillipsburg 70, TMP 43
The Phillipsburg Lady Panthers started Tuesday’s 3A Sub-State opener against TMP on a six to nothing run and didn’t look back as they went on to the 70-43 victory.  TMP trailed by as many as 11 in the first quarter but slowly closed the gap and cut the Lady Panther lead to five after an early second quarter bucket.  Phillipsburg would push the lead to 13 midway through the second and the Lady Monarchs responded again, cutting the lead to seven at 32-25.

Phillipsburg pushed back with two quick buckets in the final 30 seconds of the first half to stretch the lead to double digits once again, 36-25.  The Lady Panthers continued their run at the start of the third quarter with the first six points and TMP was not able to recover.  Megan Koenigsman led TMP with 20 points and Madyson Koerner chipped in with 12.  TMP finishes their season at seven and 14.  Phillipsburg improves to 16 and five and will take on Lyons in the semifinals on Friday.  The winner of that game will face the winner of Ellsworth and Minneapolis on Saturday for the sub-state title.

Baird has been defensive coordinator for the Cardinals the past three seasons. He played high school football at Hoisington before going to Kansas State as a gray shirt. He finished his career at Fort Hays State University.

Ingram went 9-10 in his two years as the Cardinals head coach, leading Hoisington to the 3A playoffs both seasons.
