FHSU Sports Information

Five wrestlers from No. 15 Fort Hays State earned a berth to the NCAA National Championships, as the team finished fourth at the NCAA Central Super Regional on Saturday, March 1.  The tournament, held in Edmond, Okla., was a two-day event that sent the top five place-winners of each weight class to nationals.

FHSU’s C.J. Napier (141) and Jon Inman (184) claimed the regional championships in their respective weight classes, while Josh Rodriguez took second at 174 pounds.  On the consolation side of the bracket, Tanner Kriss (197) grabbed fourth place and Mitchell Means (157) was fifth.  Just missing a trip to Nationals was Adam Ludwin (125) and Trey Page (285).  Both wrestlers finished sixth in their respective classes.

In team scoring, FHSU held tough to the second position for much of the tournament, but eventually finished fourth with 89.0 points.  Ahead of the Tigers was champion Nebraska-Kearney (106.5 points), Lindenwood (99.5 points) and St. Cloud State (99.0 points).  Ouachita Baptist (85.0 points) was fifth.

Napier, ranked fourth nationally at 141 pounds, finished 2-0 on the second day of action, picking up the first of two regional titles for the Tigers.  Napier defeated Matt Nelson of St. Cloud State, 5-2 to reach the finals, and then knocked off Kyle Webb (Lindenwood) by decision, 5-2, to grab the championship.  Napier is a two-time national qualifier in a Tiger uniform.

Inman, a freshman, earned his first trip to nationals after going 2-0 on Day 2 of competition.  Inman won by decision, 7-2, over Sean Derry (Augustana) in the semifinals to reach the title bout.  Inman claimed the Tigers second regional championship of the day with a 7-3 decision over Mark Fiala of Nebraska-Kearney.

Rodriguez clinched a berth to the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish at 174 pounds, going 1-1 in the final day of the tournament.  In the semifinals, Rodriguez took a 7-1 decision over Connor Monk (Minnesota State-Moorhead) before falling to UNK’s Patrick Martinez, 4-2.

Kriss, ranked seventh nationally at 197 pounds, finished fourth to qualify for the NCAA Championships.  Kriss started his day with a narrow 4-3 loss to eventual champion Romero Cotton of Nebraska-Kearney before knocking off Kenny Breaux (Lindenwood) in the consolation semifinals by a 5-0 decision.  In the third-place match, Kriss dropped a 3-2 decision to Jayd Docken of Augustana

The Tigers’ final qualifier, Means, finished the tournament at 4-2 overall in fifth place.  In the third round of consolation matches, Means defeated Chase White of UNK, 4-0, before falling Bobby Williams (Ouachita Baptist) by pin in 1:37.  With a trip to nationals on the line, Means defeated Bradyn Neises of Augustana by major decision, 10-2.

The NCAA Championships will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, on March 13-14.

Hays High Sub-State Games Set

NCKTech LOCAL SPORTS BANNERBy Dustin Armbruster

Finishing the regular season 20-0 has earned the Hays High Indians the #1 seed in the upcoming week’s sub-state tournament. Hays will host 3-17 Wichita West on Wednesday at 6:00. The winner of that game takes on the winner of fourth seeded Bishop Carroll or the fifth seed Great Bend. Both teams are 7-13 on the season and home court was decided on a coin flip. The higher of the remaining seeds will host the championship game.

Both the Hays high girls and Wichita West finished 0-20 on the year and a coin flip was used to determine the seven and eight seeds. Hays lost the coin flip and will be making a return trip to Great Bend for a 7:00 game on Thursday. The Indians finished the regular season in Great Bend on Friday. The winner will play the winner of fourth seeded Liberal (7-13) and fifth seeded Bishop Carroll (6-14).

Hays Boys Finish Regular Season Perfect; Girls Fall

NCKTech LOCAL SPORTS BANNERBy Dustin Armbruster

Girls: Great Bend 62 – Hays 27

The Hays High girls led the Western Athletic Conference champion Great Bend Lady Panthers 6-4 midway through the first quarter.  Hays though wouldn’t score for the next nine minutes as Great Bend went on a 33-0 run.  Great Bend finished off the night with a 62-27 victory, completing a perfect 8-0 record in the WAC.

Hays was led by Audra Schmeidler with 8 points and 9 rebounds.

Hays finishes the season at 0-20 and 0-8 in the WAC.  Great Bend finishes at 18-2.

Hays will play next Thursday in the first round of sub-state as either the seven or eight seed.  Wichita West also went 0-20 this season and coin flip will determine the seeds.  Depending the outcome of that flip, Hays will play either at Great Bend again, at Bishop-Carroll in Wichita or in Goddard at Eisenhower High School.

Boys: Hays 63 – Great Bend 35

All twenty of Hays High’s regular season games have had the same result…a W for the Indians.  Hays improved their record to 20-0 and 8-0 in the Western Athletic Conference with a 63-35 in on Friday night in Great Bend.  Great Bend took an early 3-0 lead when Hays exploded for an 11-0 run and never looked back.  Jordan Windholz scored 13 first quarter points and Lane Clark hit two three’s including one at the the first quarter buzzer to lead 23-10.  The Indians defense stole the show in the second quarter, allowing the Panthers to score just one point for a 33-11 half time lead.

Both teams scored 17 points in the third and Hays outscored Great Bend 13-7 in the fourth.

At 20-0, this Hays team is just the third Indian squad to earn 20 or more wins in a season.  Hays went 22-1 in the 1943-44 season earning the Indians only state basketball title.  The 1995-96 team went 21-4.

Hays wins the Western Athletic Conference for the first time 2006 and wraps up the one seed in the sub-state with the win.  Great Bend finishes the year at 7-13 and 2-6 in the WAC.

Jordan Windholz followed up his career high 26 points on Tuesday night with a 20 point effort on Friday.  Brady Werth added 14 in the victory.

Hays shot 57% for the game 26 of 46 and committed just five turnovers, none in the first half.

Hays High will host the first round of the sub-state tournament next Wednesday against Wichita Heights.  The KSHSAA changed the hosting rules last year and the higher seeded team hosts the second round as well.

Great Bend will learn their fate on Saturday as they are tied with Bishop Carroll for the fourth and fifth seed.  A coin flip will determine who get the first round home game.

Girls:  Hutch Trinity 49, TMP 46

Megan Koenigsman was the lone Lady Monarch in double figures with 16 points.  TMP begins 3A Sub-State play on Tuesday at Phillipsburg.

Girls Highlights

Boys:  TMP 55, Hutch Trinity 50
The Hutch Trinity Celtics shot out of the gates against TMP by scoring the game’s first six points and didn’t look back for most of the first half.  The Celtics led 14-6 after the first quarter and 31-24 at halftime.  Their lead would grow to as many as 12 points in the third quarter when TMP started to push back.  The Monarchs would cut the lead back to six at 42-36 going to quarter number four.

Hutch Trinity would quickly build the lead back to nine at 45-36 early in the fourth quarter and TMP would answer in a big way outscoring the Celtics 19 to five the rest of the way.  Jordan Gottschalk finished with 16 points to lead the Monarchs.  Sophomore Jared Vitztum would come off of the bench and score 15 points, including a three pointer with 1:22 left in the game to give TMP a 52-50 lead that they would never relinquish.

TMP is now 11-9 on the season and will host Norton in the first round of the Hoisington 3A Sub-State.
