Girls: Dodge City 41 – Hays 32
It looked like it could happen on senior night at Hays High School.  That the Hays High girls could pick up their first win of the season.  Down 30-22 to Dodge City fifteen seconds in to the fourth quarter Hays scored seven straight points to get within one at 30-29.  After a field goal from the Lady Demons, freshman Talyn Kleweno knocked in a right wing three to tie the game at 32 with 2:15 remaining.  Unfortunately that would be the last points of the game for Hays as Dodge City ended the game on a 9-0 run to win 41-32.

Hays was led by Mattison Schlaefli who scored a career high 14 in the loss.  Hays High honored their only senior Haley Wells in between the games.

Hays falls to 0-19 on the year and 0-7 in the WAC.  Dodge City is now 10-9 and 4-3 in conference play.

Game Highlights

Boys: Hays 55 – Dodge City 47
Two years ago on senior night….the Hays High Indians basketball team didn’t have anybody to honor in between games starting a freshman, three sophomores, and a junior instead.  Tuesday night, those same sophomores and freshman tried to lay claim to the Western Athletic Conference Crown against Dodge City.

Every time Hays pulled away from Dodge City, the Red Demons had an answer.  After Dodge City scored the games first field goal, Hays went on a 10-2 run going six points.  The Red Demons answered back with seven straight points pulling ahead 11-10.  The Indians regained the lead 14-13 at the end of the first quarter and again started to stretch the lead going up 25-16 capped by one of five three pointers from Jordan Windholz.  Dodge City scored the next five points though to get back within four.  Hays led 32-26 going into half time.

Hays had one more nine point lead at 38-29 with five minutes to go in the third quarter.  Dodge City had another run in them taking a 39-38 after scoring ten straight points.  The Indians cored four quick points to go back up four and led 42-41 after three quarters.

Hays never again trailed in the game scoring the first five points of the fourth quarter to go up 47-41 on a Kyler Niernberger lay up.  Dodge City again was able to cut into the lead and trailed just 49-47 with 1:51 left.  The Hays High defense though was rise to the occasion and didn’t allow a single point the rest of the way while making six straight free throws to close out the 55-47 win.  Hays made 9 of 10 fourth quarter free throws and 12 of 13 in the second half.

Hays was led in scoring by Windholz with a career high 26.  Brady Werth added 13.

Hays improves to 19-0 on the year and with a 7-0 mark in the WAC became the outright champions with one game remaining.  Dodge City drops to 8-11 and 4-3 in conference play.

Hays honored their seniors, Kyler Nierenberger, Clayton Riedel, Jordan Windholz, Lane Clark, Kenny Rounkles and Kade Parker in between games for senior night.

Hays is on the road Friday to wrap up the regular season in Great Bend.

No. 2 Wichita State goes 30-0

By BILL LIESSE
Associated Press

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) – Wichita State is all alone in the record book.

Again using a balanced offense and tenacious defense, the second-ranked Shockers became the first Division I team to reach 30-0 in the regular season with a 69-49 victory over Bradley on Tuesday night.

“To be the first and only team in college basketball to win 30 without a loss in the regular season,” Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall said when asked about his theme for the game. “I realize we’re playing more games … but it has never happened in the regular season.

“So it’s a first. And these guys like to be the first, and the best.”

Ron Baker had 15 points to lead four Wichita State players in double figures as the Shockers became the 11th team to reach 30-0, the previous 10 all hitting the 30-win mark during postseason play. The last team to reach 30-0 was UNLV in 1990-91. The Runnin’ Rebels went 34-0 that season before losing to Duke in the national semifinals.

The Shockers (30-0, 17-0 Missouri Valley Conference) have one more regular-season game, at home Saturday against Missouri State. The last team to finish a regular season unbeaten was Saint Joseph’s in 2003-04 at 27-0. The next season, Illinois got to 29-0 before losing its regular-season finale at Ohio State.

A barrage of 3-pointers early in the second half broke it open for Wichita State, which beat Bradley (12-18, 7-10) for the 10th straight time and second this season.

After Bradley trimmed a 10-point halftime deficit to eight, Shockers point guard Fred VanVleet made consecutive 3s for a 14-point lead, the visitors’ largest to that point. By the 12:50 mark, Cleanthony Early had added a 3-pointer and Baker made two 3s off screens for a 50-32 lead.

Wichita State finished the game 11 of 21 from beyond the arc, with four players making two or more. Bradley was 4 of 14.

“End-of-shot-clock 3s. That was it,” Bradley coach Geno Ford said. “I’m not saying we were going to win, but you hold them to seven offensive rebounds and have just six turnovers? I’ll take it.

“The difference was late-shot-clock 3s and their length at the basket.”

Ford went on to laud the Shockers’ defense.

“At the rim, they have unbelievable length,” Ford said. “It’s length and it comes from anywhere. Even (6-foot-3) Baker.

“They’re absolutely terrific at help and recover, and they deny (wing passes). You can’t find five teams in the country with that (combination).”

Tyshon Pickett finished with 13 points and 15 rebounds for Bradley after nearly reaching a double-double in the first half with 10 points and nine rebounds. Pickett was just 5-of-20 from the field and leading scorer Walt Lemon Jr. was 6 for 20 and had 18 points.

“I hate to get beat on the glass,” Marshall said of his team’s 37-36 rebound disadvantage. “But (Pickett) was a monster. He beasted us a little.”

Tekele Cotton scored 13 points, Early 12 and VanVleet had 11 for Wichita State, a Final Four participant a year ago. Reserve Darius Carter added nine points and seven rebounds and had one of the Shockers’ six blocked shots.

Miserable shooting prevented Bradley from mounting much of a threat. The Braves were at 25 percent (11 for 44) through 30 minutes and finished 16 for 59 (27.1 percent).

Bradley was playing host to its highest-ranked opponent since 1982, when then-No. 2 Wichita State lost 55-47 to the Braves who went on to win the NIT.

The Shockers led 35-25 at halftime after holding the Braves to 8-of-34 shooting (23.5 percent).

The game was a matchup of the top two defensive teams in the conference, though Wichita State (60.8 points per game) leads Bradley (65.5) comfortably. Offensively, Wichita State is also the MVC’s best (75.8) while Bradley (63.8) is last.

The No. 2 ranking equals the highest ranking in Wichita State history, matching the 1981-82 team.

Boys: TMP 60, Colby 55
It was a struggle most of the night but the TMP boys pulled out their 10th win on the season and the 400th in the career for head coach Joe Hertel, 60-55 over Colby.  TMP trailed 17-15 after the first quarter, 32-28 at halftime and 46-43 heading into the fourth quarter.  The Monarchs scored the first four points of the fourth and Colby answered with four of their own to push the lead back to three points at 50-47.  After the two teams traded a couple of buckets and with the Monarchs trailing 52-51, Jared Vitztum knocked in a huge three point shot to give the Monarchs the lead to stay at 54-52.

TMP outscored Colby 6-3 the rest of the way to pick up the win.  Three Monarchs were in double figures led by Ryan Mayorga and Jordan Gottschalk who both scored 12 points. Vitztum added 11.

TMP will wrap up the regular season with Hutchinson-Trinity on Thursday.

Girls: Colby 47, TMP 39
Colby started out the game on a 12-3 run on Tuesday night and had the TMP Lady Monarchs on their heels the rest of the night, winning 47-39.  TMP would tie the game at 15 late in the second quarter, but a Colby three-pointer would give them the lead at the half, 18-15.

The Lady Eagles expanded that lead to 29-23 after the third quarter.  TMP would again battle back to even at 32 a piece early in the fourth quarter but could never take the lead.  Colby finished the game on a 15-7 run to pick up their ninth win on the season.  TMP drops to 7-12 and will finish the regular season at Hutchinson-Trinity on Thursday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Naadir Tharpe had 19 points to lead five Kansas players in double figures, and the fifth-ranked Jayhawks held off Oklahoma 83-75 on Monday night to wrap up a share of their 10th consecutive Big 12 championship.

Wayne Selden and Andrew Wiggins added 15 points each, and Joel Embiid had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Jayhawks (22-6, 13-2), who poured off the bench at the buzzer to celebrate the latest addition to their nation-leading 57 conference titles.

It might be the only one for Wiggins and Embiid, the dynamic freshman duo projected to be lottery picks if they come out this season. Wiggins has already stated his intention to do so.

Cameron Clark had 18 points and Buddy Hield finished with 16 for the Sooners (20-8, 9-6), who have lost 12 of their last 13 games against the Jayhawks, including both this season.

They had Kansas on the ropes for most of this one.

After taking the lead midway through the second half, Kansas started to put the hammer down, frustrating Oklahoma into poor outside shots and slicing through the lane for easy layups.

Tharpe made it all happen, either scoring himself or helping one of his teammates. The much-maligned point guard finished with five assists and only one turnover.

Only two schools in men’s Division I basketball have won more consecutive conference titles than Kansas: UCLA captured 13 straight from 1967-79 in the Pac-10, and Gonzaga won 11 straight in the West Coast Conference from 2001-11.

The first half Monday night boiled down to an old-fashioned Big Eight tussle.

The Jayhawks threw the first body punch, picking up right where they left off in a rout of Texas by taking a 15-4 lead. Oklahoma answered with a few haymakers of its own, going on a 13-2 charge and eventually pulling ahead 27-25 with 5:26 left in the half.

Selden took over down the stretch, though, scoring seven straight points to give Kansas the lead back. Frank Mason’s 3-pointer capped a 10-0 surge and made it 42-33 at halftime.

The Jayhawks, arguably the deepest team in the Big 12, forged their lead despite playing without a handful of players due to foul trouble. Wiggins, Tharpe, Perry Ellis and Jamari Traylor all had two fouls, and Connor Frankamp was on the bench with three.

Wiggins picked up his third on the first play of the second half, when Ryan Spangler drove to the basket for an and one. It was the start of a 10-2 run that got the Sooners back in the game.

Clark’s hot shooting and a couple of timely 3-pointers by Hield gave Oklahoma the lead, only for Kansas to come back once more. Wiggins scored on a putback of his own miss with 8:01 left to give the Jayhawks a 60-59 lead, and their advantage grew to 69-63 a few minutes later.

The Sooners kept finding answers. When Wiggins hit a 3-pointer to make it 74-66, Isaiah Cousins promptly scored in the paint. When Tharpe got a home-rim bounce on a pull-up jumper, Hield was there to hit a fall-away 3-pointer to close within 76-71 with 1:30 left.

Oklahoma simply ran out of time, and as the final seconds ticked off the clock, another sellout crowd at the Phog began to chant, “Ten straight! Ten straight!”
