Oklahoma runs past Kansas State

By BOBBY ANDERSON
Associated Press

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Buddy Hield scored 18 points and Isaiah Cousins added 17 to help Oklahoma beat Kansas State 86-73 and clear up the Big 12 standings with four games remaining in league play.

The runaway win helped break a three-way tie for third with Oklahoma, Kansas State and Iowa State all entering the day with 8-5 league marks. Iowa State’s 71-60 Saturday win over TCU kept the Cyclones knotted with the Sooners.

Oklahoma (20-7, 9-5) dominated in nearly every category, leading by as many as 27 points in the second half.

The Sooners took their first lead 3 minutes in when Hield drained a 3-pointer following a Kansas State turnover. From there, Oklahoma outscored the Wildcats 34-17 to lead 41-22 at the half.

Cameron Clark scored 11 and Jordan Woodard added 10 for the Sooners, who have won three of their last four games going into Monday night at Kansas.

Marcus Foster led Kansas State with 21 points. Nigel Johnson scored 11 and Thomas Gipson added 10.

The Wildcats (18-9, 8-6) lost their sixth consecutive road game and are 1-6 in away league games.

Kansas State dug a hole early it couldn’t climb out of, committing 10 first-half turnovers and shooting 39 percent with no starter scoring more than five points.

Oklahoma turned those turnovers into 17 points and controlled the tempo, outrebounding Kansas State 21-15 in the half and 32-28 for the game.

The Wildcats outscored Oklahoma 51-45 in the second half but it wasn’t enough in what has been a difficult season away from home.

The Wildcats have done some of their best work this season at home inside Bramlage Coliseum – winning their last 14 games, including beating No. 15 Texas and No. 7 Kansas.

Saturday’s game was a much different story than when the two teams met in Manhattan, Kan., on Jan. 14. Kansas State led 39-38 after the first half and came from behind in the final 5 minutes to win 72-66 with five different players scoring in double figures.

Saturday, the Wildcats didn’t have a player reach double-figure scoring until 7:51 remaining when Foster hit his second 3-pointer of the afternoon.

Both Oklahoma and Kansas State play two of their final three games at home.

Early first half run lifts Lady Tigers to win over Nebraska-Kearney

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

Fort Hays State used an early 12-0 run to build a 12-point the added a 13-2 run later in the first half to go up 20 and defeat Nebraska-Kearney 81-53 Saturday afternoon at Gross Coliseum, ending their three-game win streak. The Lady Tigers improve to 17-7 overall and 10-7 in the MIAA. UNK drops their third straight and is now 8-16 and 4-13 in the conference.

After grabbing the early 12-point, the Lady Tigers never led Nebraska-Kearney any closer than nine the first of the first half and lead 41-26 at halftime.

UNK opened the second half on an 11-4 run to pull within eight, but the Lady Tigers answer with an 11-2 run. They would push the lead as high as 30, closing the game on a 13-2 run.

Kate Lehman led FHSU with 26 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocked shots. Chelsea Mason added 13 points.

UNK was led by Nicole Arp who scored a career-high 19.

FHSU shot just 39-perecent and were just 2-for-14 from 3-point range but hit 21-of-29 free throws and outrebounded UNK by 17 and had 23 offensive rebounds producing 31 second chance points.

Hays Boys Win Share Of WAC Title; Girls Fall

By Dustin Armbruster

Girls: Garden City 67 – Hays 24

Hays High kept things tight midway through the first quarter at 10-6, but following a Garden City timeout the Buffaloes went on a 10-0 run pushing their lead to 14 and never looked back.  For Hays High it was the eighth state ranked opponent they have played this year.  Garden City was ranked 8th this week in class 6A.

Hays trailed Garden City 37-16 at half time and only scored two second half field goals in the 67-24 loss to Garden City.

Hays was led in scoring by Audra Schmeidler’s nine points.  Garden City had four score in double figures led by the 2013 WAC Player of the Year Teryn Temple who scored 19.

Hays falls to 0-17 and 0-6 in WAC play.  Garden City is 11-8 and 4-3 in league play.

Boys: Hays 44 – Garden City 39

It was the third meeting this season between Hays and Garden City and this game was easily the best of the series.  Hays jumped out to a 5-0 lead only to fall behind 7-5 when the Buffaloes answered with seven straight points.  Hays regained the lead on a Jordan Windholz three pointer at 11-9 and Hays would not trail again until the fourth quarter.

The Indians used a 5-0 spurt in the second quarter to grab their biggest first half lead of seven points 22-15.  Hays scored 11 points in the second quarter, all by Brady Werth, taking a 26-21 lead into halftime.

The Indians built their biggest lead of the game on a Kade Parker three pointer early in the third quarter and held a 33-26 lead with 4:40 left to go in the quarter.  Garden City went on a 9-0 run that extended into the fourth quarter and gained the 35-33 with less than a minute gone out of the fourth quarter.

Hays immediately took a 38-35 lead back on a Lane Clark three and Windholz driving layup.

Hays would not trail again, but left the door open late.  Hays built their lead to 41-37 on two Kyler Niernberger free throws with 43 seconds left.  After missing the front end of a one and one at the free throw line, Clark secured the rebound only to be picked by Caleb Tramp and his dunk for Garden City made it 41-39 with :18 left.

Werth for Hays again missed the front end of a one and one, but Garden City threw the ball away and an intentional foul put Werth the line for two where he did not miss and Clark hit one of two after the ensuing inbound giving Hays the 44-39 victory.

Werth scored 18 for the Indians and was the only Hays player in double figures.

Garden City shot 15 for 25 through the first three quarters but made just 3 of their 14 fourth quarter shots.

Hays shot just 35% in the game making 15 of 43.

Hays improves to 17-0 on the year and 6-0 in the WAC and with the win secure at least a share of the WAC title.

Garden City falls to 10-9 and 3-4 in the conference.

FHSU softball sweeps Rockhurst in home opener

FHSU Sports Information

No. 14 Fort Hays State swept its first doubleheader of the season on Friday, taking down Rockhurst 9-0 (six innings) in Game 1, and 6-4 in Game 2.

FHSU, which hit .370 as a team, is now 7-1 overall this season and has won six straight.  Rockhurst dropped to 2-6 with the losses.

FHSU hits the road this weekend for a five-game tournament in St. Paul, Minn., on Feb. 23-24.  FHSU will face Minnesota Duluth and Minot State twice and University of Mary once.

Game 1: FHSU 9, Rockhurst 0 (6 innings)
Fort Hays State’s Paxton Duran (4-0) threw a complete game, striking out seven and allowing just four hits to win her fourth game of the season.  Duran didn’t walk a batter and dropped her season ERA to 2.05.

At the plate, FHSU’s Danie Brinkmann was 2-for-2 with an RBI while Tori Beltz (1-for-2) and Duran (2-for-3) each had multi-RBI home runs.

With both teams scoreless through the first three innings, FHSU got things started in the fourth with a lead-off single from Brinkmann.  After Kelli Koehler entered to pinch run for Brinkmann, Beltz took the first pitch she saw over the fence in left center, sending FHSU ahead, 2-0.

The Tigers’ largest run sequence came in the fifth, starting with Duran’s lead-off single up the middle.  During Kellsi Olsen’s at-bat, Duran reached second, and a walk for Olsen put runners on first and second with no outs. Biance Adame’s single up the middle sent Duran home and moved Olsen to second.  Next, Rilee Krier laid down a bunt single to load the bases, but a throwing error on RU’s Bridgette Sappington allowed all three runners to move up, scoring Olsen.  Brinkmann’s second hit of the day – a single – scored Adame to put FHSU ahead, 5-0.  During Beltz’s at-bat, Brinkmann was caught stealing, but the play allowed Krier to come home for the sixth run of the day.

In the final inning, two straight singles from Amanda Vaupel and Kylie Strand set up runners on first and second with no outs for Duran.  On the first pitch of her at-bat, Duran blasted a three-run shot to left field, ending the game early with a run-rule.

Game 2: FHSU 6, Rockhurst 2
Kelsey Kimmiau (2-1) threw into the sixth inning with four strikeouts for the win, while Latlyn Kern’s two scoreless innings earned her the save.  Kimminau allowed six hits on the day and Kern walked just one batter.

Courtney Dobson went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI, and Vaupel (1-for-2) had a home run with two runs scored. Samantha Villareal picked up two RBI in a pinch hitting role, going 1-for-1 with a single.

The Tigers jumped out to a two-run lead in the first, using back-to-back two-out walks from Brinkmann and Beltz to start the offense.  Dobson’s first double of the day followed, bouncing off the wall in center to score both runners.

Rockhurst tied the game, 2-2 in the fourth, as Demi Plathe led off with a double and later came around to score.  All told, RU had three hits in the inning with two runs scored.

In the bottom of the fourth, though, FHSU took control back for good.   Dobson led off the inning with a double, and moved to third on Vaupel’s sacrifice bunt – which Vaupel reached safely on due to a fielder’s choice.  Strand’s ground ball moved Vaupel to second, and with one out, a walk from Amy Dunn loaded the bases. Kellsi Olsen’s sacrifice fly pushed all Tigers up a base and scored Dobson.  With one out, Villarreal pinch hit for Adame, and sliced a ball into center to score Vaupel and Dunn.

The Hawks answered again in the fifth, but scored just one run on an RBI-double from Plathe, putting the game at 5-3.  In the sixth, RU’s Rachel Evans hit a sacrifice fly into left that scored Alex Hill and shrunk FHSU’s lead to just one (5-4).

That, however, was as close as RU could climb, as Fort Hays State tacked on one more run in the sixth – a solo shot from Vaupel to lead off the inning.

Tiger baseball takes series opener with Pitt State

FHSU Sports Information

Fort Hays State baseball opened its MIAA slate with a win on Friday (Feb. 21) at Larks Park in Hays, defeating Pittsburg State 6-3. The Tigers moved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA.

The Tigers took the early lead 1-0 on a Clayton Garland solo home run in the third inning, but Pittsburg State responded for all three of its runs on a Tory Stoffregen 3-run home run in the fifth to go up 3-1.

Fort Hays State immediately responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead back at 5-3. Kodie Fewin triggered the rally with a solo home run, cutting the lead to one. After a single and a hit batter, Garland knocked in the tying run with a double to the left center gap. Alex King followed Garland with a RBI single to put the Tigers in front 4-3 and then Horace Johnson had a RBI groundout with the bases loaded.

Fewin hit his second solo homer of the game in the sixth to extend the FHSU lead to 6-3, the eventual final. All six runs were charged to PSU starter Tyler Thompson, who lasted 5.2 innings.

Steven Federau tossed five scoreless frames of his 6.0 innings pitched, allowing all three PSU runs in the fifth. Federau faced one batter in the seventh before yielding to Drew Martineau for the final 3.0 innings. Martineau picked up his first save of the season, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Federau struck out four and allowed six hits in his outing.

The Tigers and Gorillas meet in the doubleheader of the four-game weekend series on Saturday, starting at 1 pm at Larks Park.

Royals sign 7 players to 1-year deals for 2014

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – The Royals have agreed to terms with seven players not yet eligible for arbitration on major league contracts, including third basemen Mike Moustakas and Danny Valencia.

Kansas City also agreed Friday to deals with left-hander Justin Marks, right-handers Louis Coleman and Kelvin Herrera, infielder Cheslor Cuthbert and outfielder Lane Adams.

The flurry of agreements leaves 13 players unsigned for the 2014 seasons: right-handers Francisley Bueno, Michael Mariot and Yordano Ventura; left-handers Danny Duffy, Chris Dwyer, Donnie Joseph and John Lamb; infielders Pedro Ciriaco, Christian Colon and Johnny Giavotella; and outfielders Lorenzo Cain, Jarrod Dyson and Carlos Peguero.

If deals can’t be reached with pre-arbitration players, contracts can be renewed at the club’s discretion provided they meet a series of salary criteria.

TMP girls win, boys lose

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Girls:  TMP 55, Larned 42
Freshman Madyson Koerner had a career high 15 points to help lead the TMP Lady Monarchs to their sixth win of the season.  TMP trailed twice early in the game but pulled ahead 12 to nine after the first quarter and never trailed again.  The Lady Monarchs used a 17-0 run from the first quarter into the second quarter to lead 27-9.  Larned cut the lead to 12 at halftime, 32-20.

The third quarter belonged to TMP, outscoring Larned 18-8 to take their largest lead of 22 points heading into the fourth quarter.

Larned was able to cut the lead to as little as 12 but never made a serious push.

TMP is now 6-11 on the season and will be on the road at Plainville on Friday night.

Girls Highlights

Boys:  Larned 73, TMP 71  OT
It took Larned four extra minutes in overtime to knock of TMP on Thursday, 73-71.  It was a knock down, drag out affair most of the night with the Indians leading most of the game.  TMP trailed 22-13 after the first quarter and then clamped down defensively in the second quarter and also started heating up their basket, outscoring Larned 16 to 10 to trail only 32-29 at halftime.

The Monarchs were able to tie the game at 34 early in the third quarter.  Larned would then rattle off the next 10 points and led 44-34 late in the third.  TMP closed the third quarter on a quick five to two run to pull within seven heading to the fourth.

This is when the true fireworks began as both teams laid everything out on the floor.  Larned kept the Monarchs at arms length through most of the quarter and led 64-57 at the two minute mark.  TMP outscored the Indians eight to one down the stretch and a Ryan Mayorga jumper from the baseline at the buzzer tied the game at 65 and to overtime these two teams went.

TMP would take the lead for the only time in the extra period on a Jordan Gottschalk layup, taking a 67-65 lead.  Larned’s Easton Palmer would nail a three on their next possession to give the lead back to the Indians for good.  TMP had a chance to win in the end but a Jordan Gottschalk three point attempt missed to the left.

TMP is now 9-8 on the year and will play their fourth game in five days on Friday night in Plainville.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Thomas Gipson had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Marcus Foster added 13 points and Kansas State used a big second-half run to put away TCU 65-53 on Wednesday night.

Nino Williams added 11 points and Will Spradling had 10 for the Wildcats (18-8, 8-5 Big 12), who bounced back from a double-overtime loss at Baylor over the weekend to match a school record with their 14th consecutive win at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Horned Frogs (9-16, 0-13) actually pulled even with Kansas State midway through the second half, but the Wildcats answered with a 15-2 run to seize control. Most of the damage came in the paint, where Gipson and D.J. Johnson were able to use their size to their advantage.

Kyan Anderson led TCU with 23 points, his fourth straight game of at least 20. Karviar Shepherd added 12 points, but otherwise the junior guard got precious little help.

Tigers come up short at Washburn

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

Washburn shot 64-percent in the second half and hit all 11 of their free throws as they knock off the Fort Hays State Tigers 79-70 Wednesday night at Lee Arena. The Tigers grabbed a 50-48 lead on a Craig Nicholson basket with 12:39 to play but the Ichabods score the next eight and would never relinquish the lead.
