Thursday home game with Auburn highlights 2014 K-State football schedule

K-State Media RelationsKansas_State_Wildcats7-342x250

Kansas State finalized its 2014 football schedule today, announcing a seven-game home slate highlighted by a prime time Thursday night battle with Auburn on September 18 and home conference matchups with Big 12 foes Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and KU.

The Wildcats’ 12-game schedule includes six teams which were bowl-eligible in 2013, with four of those visiting Bill Snyder Family Stadium in 2014.

“We are excited about our seven-game home schedule for 2014,” said Athletics Director John Currie. “Following our record-setting attendance this past season, our fans will have a 2014 slate that ranks among the best in school history including our historic matchup with Auburn as well as conference games against Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and KU.”

The 2014 slate will get underway on August 30 against Stephen F. Austin as the Cats play four of their first five games at home to open the season.

Following the season opener against the Lumberjacks, K-State will open up Big 12 Conference play in week two with a road trip to Iowa State before enjoying its first bye week of the season leading up to the game with Auburn, the 2013 BCS National Championship runner-up.

Manhattan and Bill Snyder Family Stadium will be the focus of the college football world on Thursday, September 18, as the Cats and Tigers meet in an ESPN nationally-televised game. The Thursday night matchup, one of the most-watched games in the country each week, will be the first in Manhattan since the 2010 Nebraska game and the fourth overall at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

“The chance to host a program like Auburn on ESPN’s Thursday night telecast in what will be one of the best non-conference matchups in the country next year is a terrific and unique opportunity for K-State,” Currie added.

The Wildcats then host the Miners of UTEP on September 27 to wrap up non-conference play.

K-State will continue Big 12 Conference action on October 4 at home against Texas Tech before enjoying its second bye week of the season. Following a road trip to Oklahoma (October 18), the Cats will return home for two straight against Texas on October 25 and Oklahoma State on November 1.

Following a trip to TCU on November 8, the Cats will enjoy another bye week on November 15 before heading to West Virginia for a special Thursday night matchup in Morgantown on November 20.

K-State welcomes KU to Manhattan on November 29 before wrapping up the regular season on the road at Baylor on December 6.

All game times, ticket information and promotional schedules will be announced in the coming weeks with season tickets going on sale March 3. With K-State riding a current home sellout streak of 13 straight games and another season ticket sellout anticipated, K-State officials encourage fans to act early when tickets become available.

Fort Hays State sophomore point guard Craig Nicholson was named the MIAA Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the third time this season on Monday (Feb. 3).

He was honored for his efforts in a pair of overtime wins at home over in-state rivals Emporia State and Washburn. Nicholson averaged 29.5 points, 7.0 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game last week.

He scored a career-high 36 points in the double-overtime win against Emporia State. He scored 11 of the last 12 points in regulation for FHSU, the last bucket coming with 11 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime. Nicholson added 14 points over the two overtimes, including 10 in the second overtime. His 3-point play with 50 seconds remaining put FHSU up four (its largest lead margin of the game to that point). ESU would not get closer than three points the rest of the way.

Against Washburn, he scored 22 of his 23 points in regulation, 15 by halftime helping FHSU to a 14-point lead at the break. He had a team-high eight assists, including the pass to Dwayne Brunson for the game-winning shot that went through with 0.3 seconds remaining in overtime.

No. 6 Fort Hays State picked up its first conference dual victory on Sunday (Feb. 2), rolling over Newman, 36-15, at Gross Memorial Coliseum.FHSU-WRE-Means

The Tigers (7-4-1, 1-2 MIAA) had three pins on the afternoon, as C.J. Napier (141), Noah Killip (149) and Mitchell Means (157) stuck their individual opponents. Josh Rodriguez (174) had a technical fall, while Bradley Little (165) picked up a major decision and Symon Seaton (133) had a decision.

FHSU was open in the 125 and 285 pound weight classes, and lost just one head-to-head match:  a 3-1 decision at 197 pounds (Chad Rous).

After the bye at 125 pounds, Seaton paired up with Kris Workman (NU).  Down 4-1 with less than 30 seconds to go, Workman used a takedown and a five-second near fall count to pull ahead and take the decision, 6-5.  Reed had one point of riding time.

Napier started a stretch of three straight pins for the Tigers, working against Wyatt Wade for two periods before sticking him just 21 seconds into the second period (fall time of 3:39).

Killip, in his first match since Dec. 15, took control early and picked up a first period pin over Zach Duwe in 1:58.

Means followed suit, winning by fall over Colton Duhr in just 2:34, and stretching the Tigers’ team score advantage to 21-6.

At 165 pounds, Little used a takedown late in the third period (under 20 seconds remaining) and riding time to stretch a decision into a major, defeating Noel Torres, 10-2.

Rodriguez won FHSU’s final head-to-head matchup of the night in impressive fashion, scoring early and often en route to a 17-2 technical fall as time expired.  Rodriguez racked up over two minutes of riding time to push the victory from major to a tech fall.

After Jon Inman’s forfeit victory at 184 pounds, Chad Rous dropped a 3-1 decision to Steven Cooksley and FHSU went open at heavyweight, sending the dual to a final score of 36-15.

Fort Hays State closes out the home portion of its 2014 dual schedule on Thursday (Feb. 6) against Central Missouri at 7 p.m.

Dwayne Brunson hit an 17-foot jump shot inside the free throw circle with less than one-second to play to lift the Fort Hays State Tigers to an 87-85 overtime win over Washburn Saturday afternoon in front of 4,877 at Gross Coliseum. The 24th-ranked Tigers have now won 10-straight and improve to 18-3 overall and 9-3 in the MIAA. Washburn drops to 14-5 and 7-5 in the conference.

The game was Fort Hays State’s sixth overtime contest this season which is a school and new MIAA record.

Washburn’s Alex North, who finished with 23 points, banked in a 3-pointer with under three seconds to play to force the overtime.

The Ichabods built their biggest lead of the game with 1:28 to play in overtime but Carson Konrade answered with a three from the right wing with 1:02 to play to tie the game 85-85. Craig Nicholson missed a shot with under 10 seconds to play but the Tigers forced a jump ball and had the final possession with two-seconds to play setting up Brunson’s game-winning heroics.

Hays 55 – Dodge City 36

The Hays High Indians put their new No. 1 ranking in class 5A on the line for the first time with a trip to Dodge City on Friday night.

Hays High Indians

For just the second time all year, the Indians trailed at the end of the first quarter 13-12.  The early deficit by Hays and early success by Dodge City was due to turnovers. Hays turned the ball over five times in the first quarter, which is half the Indians per game average on the season. Dodge City turned it over just twice in the first eight minutes.

Hays still trailed 17-16 midway through the second quarter before exploding on a 12-0 run to lead at half time 28-17.

Hays never could pull away in the third quarter, but never let Dodge City get any closer than nine points and still led by 11 after three.

The Indians opened the fourth quarter on a 11-0 run to push their lead to 22 and cruised to a 55-36 victory.

Jordan Windholz and Brady Werth each led the team with 14.  Hays didn’t shoot much due to Dodge City’s slow-down style and the Indians 19 turnovers. But when Hays shot they were hot, making 18 of 28 for 64 percent and 16 of 19 free throws for 84 percent.  After just two turnovers in the first quarter, Dodge City ended the night with 23.

Hays is now 13-0 on the year and 4-0 in the WAC.  Dodge City drops to 4-7 and 2-1 in conference play.

Hays is at home for the first time since January 14th when they take on Salina South Tuesday.

The Trailblazers came in shooting just 31 percent on the year but went 23-48 in the game and shot 48%.

Hays drops to 0-13 on the season.  The Lady Indians were led in scoring by Brooke Russell who scored nine, all in the fourth quarter on three, three point field goals.

Hays High is at home for the first time since January 14 when they play Salina South on Tuesday.

NBC World Series seeking nonprofit status

NBC world seriesWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Officials with the National Baseball Congress World Series say they hope to hear by the fall whether the organization will receive nonprofit status from the Internal Revenue Service.

City Manager Robert Layton says attorneys are confident the amateur baseball tournament will be declared nonprofit, which supporters believe will help secure the financial future of the 80-year-old tournament.

The Wichita Eagle reports nonprofit status would enhance the tournament’s efforts to attract sponsors, which would get tax benefits for supporting the World Series.

Layton says the city will appoint a volunteer board to direct the tournament once the IRS acts.

The city of Wichita also is pursuing a national television deal for next summer’s tournament.
