Kansas City Royals Media Relations

KANSAS CITY, MO – The Kansas City Royals announced today that they have acquired outfielder Carlos Peguero from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations.  Peguero (pronounced: peh-GAIR-oh) has been added to the 40-man roster.  In a corresponding roster move, left-handed pitcher Everett Teaford has been designated for assignment.

Peguero, 26, has spent parts of the last three seasons in the Major Leagues with Seattle.  Last season, he played in two games in April, going 2-for-6 with a homer and an RBI.  He ranked seventh in the Pacific Coast League with 19 homers in 2013, to go along with a .260 batting average (118-for-454), 28 doubles and 83 RBI at Triple-A Tacoma.  The left-handed hitting outfielder participated in the 2010 XM All-Star Futures Game at Angel Stadium, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the World team.  He is a career .195 hitter with nine homers and 27 RBI in just 219 plate appearances at the Major League level between 2011-13.

Teaford, 29, made one appearance for the Royals in 2013, pitching 0.2 inning at Cleveland on July 14.

Spradling leads K-State to win over Texas Tech

By DAVE SKRETTA

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Will Spradling scored a season-high 17 points, including four free throws in the closing seconds, to help Kansas State hold off Texas Tech 66-58 on Tuesday night.

Nino Williams added 13 points and Wesley Iwundu had 11 for the Wildcats (15-6, 5-3 Big 12), who ended a two-game skid despite getting very little from their three leading scorers.Marcus Foster had two points on 1-for-8 shooting, Shane Southwell missed his first seven shots and finished with four points, and Thomas Gipson scored seven before fouling out.

The Red Raiders (10-11, 2-6) closed within 48-47 midway through the second half, but the stingiest defense in the Big 12 kept answering the call, and Texas Tech never regained the lead.

Jaye Crockett had 15 points to lead Texas Tech. Dusty Hannahs finished with 14.

No. 4 Wichita State beats Loyola of Chicago

The Shockers outrebounded Loyola 44-28.

The Shockers tied the 1985-86 Bradley team for the third-longest winning streak by a Missouri Valley team.

The top two MVC winning streaks are Cincinnati, 37 from 1961 to 1963, and Indiana State, 33 in 1978-79.

The Shockers led 36-18 at halftime with the Ramblers 7 of 25 (28 percent) from the field and 1 of 9 (11 percent) from beyond the 3-point line.

Consecutive 3-pointers from Ron Baker and Early quickly pushed Wichita State’s lead to 42-20 early in the second half, but the Shockers went ice cold after that, making only two of their next 18 shots.

Doyle, who entered the game averaging 16 points, finally found scoring opportunities after a two-point first half.

His 3-pointer pulled Loyola within 43-29 with 13:31 left, but Early quickly countered with a 3-pointer to stem the tide.

Doyle scored four points in a six-point run that trimmed Wichita State’s lead to 48-35 with 6:03 remaining.

A 3 by Devon Turk off a Wichita State turnover and Doyle’s slashing layup 31 seconds later brought the Ramblers within 50-40.

The crowd was nervous and then restless after Doyle’s three-point play with 2:27 left shaved the lead to single digits, 52-43.

But four free throws by Anthony and a dunk by Darius Carter sealed the victory.

Kansas AthleticsKU-MBB-K-State

ST. LOUIS – Kansas freshman guard Andrew Wiggins claimed the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week award, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) announced Tuesday. Wiggins was selected by CBSSports.com’s Jeff Borzello, in partnership with the USBWA.

Wiggins becomes the third-straight KU freshman to earn the national accolade as guard Wayne Selden, Jr., was named Jan. 14, and center Joel Embiid on Jan. 21.

Wiggins had two double-figure scoring efforts as the Jayhawks extended their win streak to six games with victories over Baylor (78-68) and at TCU (91-69). The Vaughan, Ontario, Canada, guard averaged 22.0 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 55.0 percent. He opened the week with 17 points against the Bears, including 11 points in the second half. Wiggins was then the main catalyst versus the Frogs with a career-best 27 points, including 19 in the first half. He also made 19-of-22 (.864) from the free throw line on the week and leads all Big 12 freshmen in scoring with 15.8 points per game.

In addition to the KU trio earning the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week honor, Kansas junior Naadir Tharpe was named the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week Jan. 20.

No. 6 Kansas (15-4, 6-0) will play host to No. 16 Iowa State (15-3, 3-3) on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m. (Central) on ESPNU.
