FHSU’s Lehman garners MIAA POW honors

FHSU Sports Information

Fort Hays State’s Kate Lehman was named the MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the third time this season, as announced by the conference Monday (Jan. 20).

Lehman, a junior from Newton, Kan., continued her top-level production in two MIAA games last week – averaging 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while helping the Tigers go 1-1. She swatted seven shots on the road, and hit on 54 percent of her field goal attempts (13-of-24). Lehman also became a member of the 1,000 point club at Fort Hays State, dropping 18 against Central Oklahoma to break the point barrier. Her 19 points against Northeastern State were also a team-high.

This is the fourth Athlete of the Week award (and second consecutive) for the Tiger women’s basketball this season, three from Lehman and one from Chelsea Mason – who was given the award last week. FHSU hosts South Dakota School of Mines on Thursday (Jan. 23) at 5:30 p.m., and will travel to Pittsburg State on Saturday (Jan. 25).

KU’s Tharpe, Embiid honored by Big 12

Kansas Athletics

IRVING, Texas – Kansas teammates Naadir Tharpe and Joel Embiid have been named the Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week after Jayhawk victories against two top-10 opponents last week the conference office announced Monday. The duo was selected by a media panel which covers the league.

Tharpe was the catalyst as Kansas recorded victories at No. 8 Iowa State (77-70) and versus No. 9 Oklahoma State (80-78). The Worcester, Mass., junior guard averaged 22.0 points, 5.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds while making 82.4 percent (14-of-17) of his shots from the field. He started the week with a career-high 23 points at ISU on 7-of-9 shooting before adding 21 points against the Cowboys, making 7-of-8 shots from the floor in that game. Tharpe was 6-of-8 (.750) from three-point range during the week and connected on 9-of-10 (.900) from the free throw line.
Embiid made his presence felt in the two Jayhawk wins by averaging a double-double (14.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg) while adding 13 blocked shots. The Yaounde, Cameroon, center had 16 points, nine rebounds and five rejections at Iowa State before adding 13 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocks versus Oklahoma State. Against the Cowboys, he became the first freshman in Big 12 history to have 10 or more points, 10 or more rebounds and eight blocked shots in a game. The eight rejections broke his own KU freshman single-game record, tied the Big 12 freshman record for all contests and broke the mark for a conference game. Embiid has 49 blocks this season, third on the Kansas single-season freshman list.

It is the first weekly accolade for Tharpe, while Embiid is the top rookie for the second time. Six different KU players have captured at least one weekly honor this season and this is the second time in 2013-14 two Jayhawks have been named the same week as Perry Ellis (co-player) and Andrew Wiggins (newcomer) were named Nov. 18.

Phillipsburg and Plainville claim MCL tournament titles

Phillipsburg 49, Ellis 34
The Phillipsburg Lady Panthers entered Saturday’s MCL tournament finale, against Ellis looking for the first ever tournament championship and they used a strong third quarter to bring home the win.

Phillipsburg jumped out to an early lead and led most of the way through the first quarter before Ellis finished the quarter on a 5-0 run, capped off with a Kaleigh Soneson put-back off an offensive rebound to put Ellis up 11-10 after one.

The Lady Railroaders opened the second quarter leading 14-11 but Phillipsburg’s Mattison Dusin scored eight straight points to put the Panthers up five at 19-14 and they would never trail again.

Ellis closed the Panther lead to one early in the third but Phillipsburg answered with 12 unanswered and held Ellis to just two early points in the third quarter and they led 35-22 after three. Ellis was able to close the gap to nine early in the fourth but they got no closer as Phillipsburg pulled away for the 49-34 win.

Mattison Dusin led all scorers with 18 points for Phillipsburg and Kaleigh Soneson and Alexcia Deutscher both finished with 11 for Ellis.

Plainville 49, Smith Center 34

The Plainville boys have been the team to beat in the MCL tournament in recent years and this year was once again no different as they won their third MCL tournament title in four years with a 49-34 win over SmithCenter.

Plainville raced out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and behind seven first quarter points from Brent Gehring led 14-6 after one.

The Cardinals outscored SmithCenter 13-4 in the second quarter and took a 27-12 halftime lead. The Cardinals led by as many as 22 in the season half although Smith Center did cut the lead to 11, part of an 11-0 run at the end of the third and start of the fourth but Plainville was just too much on their way to the 49-34 win.

Hadley Gillum led all scorers with 20 points and Brent Gehering finished with 13 for the Cardinals. Taylor Zabel led the Redmen with 14 points.

Nicholson scores 27 in FHSU win at Northeastern State

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

The Fort Hays State Tigers used a 34-12 run spanning the first and second halves to erase an early eight-point deficit and defeat Northeastern State 79-65 Saturday afternoon at the NSU Event Center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The win extends the Tigers win streak six as they improve 14-3 and 6-3 in the MIAA. Northeastern State falls to 11-5 and also 6-3 in the conference.

NSU raced out to an early 10-2 lead but FHSU switched to a 2-3 zone defense which helped them close the first half on an 18-5 run and a 34-28 halftime lead. The Tigers pushed the lead to 15 with 14:01 to play. The RiverHawks scored the next eight to pull within seven but would get no closer.

Craig Nicholson hit 15-of-16 free throws (12-for-12 in the second half) and led three Tigers in double-figures with 27 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out seven assists and had four steals. Karson Konrade added 16 and Dwayne Brunson scored 13, all in the second half and also grabbed 12 rebounds.

Late rally falls short for the Lady Tigers

By GERARD WELLBROCK

Kate Bellamy hit two free throws with 3.5 seconds to give Northeastern State a 49-48 lead, then Beth Bohuslavsky’s long 3-point shot at the horn bounced off the rim giving the RiverHawks the one-point win at the NSU Event Center Saturday afternoon in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

The Lady Tigers trailed by 10 with 8:17 to play but put together a 15-4 run put them up 48-47 with :21 play following a Taylor Chandler steal and layup. Kate Lehman was called for a foul on a block of Bellamy’s shot giving NSU a chance to retake the lead at the line.

The Tigers shot only 31.5-percent from the floor and hit just 5-of-23 from 3-point range and only 9-of-18 from the free throw line and were outrebounded by six.

Fort Hays State struggled offensively in the first half, going over eight minutes without a field goal. The RiverHawks took advantage, going on a 13-2 run to build an eight point lead. The Lady Tigers responded by scoring the next nine points to grab the lead back, but NSU would take back a five point lead and held a 25-22 lead at the half.

Kate Lehman led two Lady Tigers in double-figures with 19 points but shot just 6-for-12 from the field. Chelsea Mason was just 3-for-12 from beyond the arc and added 11 points.

Hays Boys Move to 9-0, Girls Drop To 0-9

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER

Girls: Garden City 69, Hays 27

The game Friday night between Hays and Garden City started the same for Hays the previous four did…a big hole to dig out of.  Down 8-0 Hays twice rallied to get within four points, but could not get any closer.  Early in the second quarter Hays was down 16-10 and had the ball twice trying to get closer.  Hays though turned it over and Garden City out scored Hays 53-17 rest of the way.

Mattison Schlaefli scored a career high ten points in the loss as Hays falls to 0-9 on the year and 0-3 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Garden City improves to 7-3 and 3-1 in the WAC.

The Lady Indians will travel to Dodge City on Tuesday for a girls only game that will tip around 7:00 before having time off until the McPherson tournament on January 30th, 31st and February 1st.

Boys: Hays 47, Garden City 33

Hays had proven through their first eight games they could win an up-tempo style of game.  Friday night Garden City slowed the ball down and Hays had to fight for their ninth straight victory to open the season.  Hays led 2-0 over the first two minutes when Garden City took a 5-2 lead and pushed the lead up to five at 11-6.  Hays trailed 12-8 after the first quarter, the first time this season Hays had trailed at the end of the first.

The Indians though found the shooting touch in the second quarter taking the halftime lead on a 14-2 run and led 22-14 at half time capped off by back to back Jordan Windholz threes.

Hays took a brief ten point lead, but Garden City pushed back getting within two points at 30-28 early in the fourth quarter.  On the next possession Kyler Nierenberger lobbed an inbound pass from the baseline for an alley-oop to Brady Werth igniting the deciding 17-3 run and a 47-33 victory.

Hays was led in scoring by Lane Clark with 13, Jordan Windholz had 12 on four three pointers, and Brady Werth added 11.

The Indians move to 9-0 on the year and 3-0 in the WAC.  Garden city drops to 6-4 and 2-2.

Hays will be at the Dodge City Tournament of Champions next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Hays will face Hutchinson at 2:00 in the tournaments first game.  The games live from the TOC will be radio only, as streaming is prohibited due to contractual agreements.

TMP Takes Two from Russell

By JEREMY McGUIRE
HaysPost

Girls: TMP 53, Russell 44

Freshman Megan Koenigsman scored 23 points to pace the TMP Lady Monarchs to a 53-44 win over the Russell Lady Broncos on Friday. It was a tight game throughout with TMP leading 10 to eight after the first quarter and 23-20 at halftime. Russell took their only lead of the game early in the third quarter, 27-25. TMP would close the quarter on a 12 to four run and take control of the game.

TMP is now three and six on the season. The Lady Monarchs will be on the road at the Hillsboro Trojan Classic on Monday afternoon to take on Hillsboro.

Boys: TMP 79, Russell 23

TMP started Friday Night’s game against Russell on a 21 to nothing run in the first quarter and never looked back. TMP’s pressure defense and fast breaking offense was to much for the Broncos to handle. The Monarchs held a 50-12 lead at the half, 72-21 after three quarters and scored seven more points in the fourth quarter on their way to a 79-23 win.

Kameron Schmidt led TMP with 26 points. The Monarchs are now four and five on the year and will play Holcomb in the first round of the Hillsboro Trojan Classic on Monday afternoon.

FHSU Wrestling falls to Central Oklahoma

FHSU Sports Information

Sixth-ranked Fort Hays State won five of the nine matchups with No. 5 Central Oklahoma, but dropped the dual, 22-16, on Thursday evening in Hays, Kan.

Due to an open weight class at 285 pounds, Fort Hays State would spot UCO six points at the conclusion of the dual, but at 125 pounds, Adam Ludwin started things off right for the Tigers.  The sophomore gave FHSU a 3-0 team lead with an 8-2 win over UCO’s Josh Breece – just missing the major decision.

At 133 pounds, Symon Seaton hung tough with UCO’s Casy Rowell (ranked fifth nationally) through the first period, but Rowell won by fall at the 4:39 mark of the match.

C.J. Napier gave FHSU another lead (7-6) at 141 pounds when he picked up an 11-3 major decision over Dustin Reed, but three straight wins for UCO’s top-ranked wrestlers at 149, 157 and 165 pounds put the Bronchos in the lead for good.

At 149 pounds, No. 1 Jordan Basks (UCO) won by major decision, 15-1, over Joey Dozier, and in the 157 pound weight class, No. 1 Cory Dauphin topped Mitchell Means, 6-3.

Bradley Little nearly pulled off the upset at 165 pounds, leading No. 1 ranked Chris Watson after the first period, 2-1.  Watson, however, tied the match, 2-2, in the second period and won by decision, 5-2.

With the Tigers down 16-7 in team scoring, Josh Rodriguez’s 6-2 decision over UCO’s Zach Aylor at 174 pounds started a string of three straight decisions for the Tigers, tying the match at 16-all.

Jon Inman led Znick Ferrell throughout his 184 pound match, winning 6-4, and Zack Grimes closed out the night for the Tigers with a 4-2 decision over Garrett Henshaw (197 pounds).  Grimes and Henshaw were tied, 1-1, heading into the third period, but after a UCO stalling point, Grimes scored a late takedown to gain the upper hand.

No. 8 Cody Dauphin earned the forfeit for UCO at 285 pounds, giving the Bronchos a victory in team scoring.

The Tigers will travel to Kearney, Neb., this Saturday (Jan. 18) for the Midwest Duals.  FHSU will face off with Northern State, Minot State, Southwest Minnesota State and California-Baptist at the one-day tournament.

Dwayne Brunson led five Tigers in double-figures with 31 points and nine rebounds. James Flemming scored a season-high 20, Tomislav Gabric 11 and Carson Konrade 10.

Holub continuing playing career overseas

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

Fort Hays State’s most decorated softball player is not done with her playing career. Maddie Holub, who became the first Tiger to be named First Team All-American by both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and Daktronics in the same season, has signed to play this spring in Italy.

Holub will play for Collechio baseball softball club, an international club. Holub says the invitaion to play abroad came as a surprise. “The manager for the team I am going to play for contacted coach (Erin) Kinberger. I guess they found my stats somewhere” Holub said.

FHSU Athletics Photo

The European league Holub will be playing in allows two foreign players on each team. As of now Holub says she will be the only American on her team. “I’m replacing an American that was playing their last year. At the end of January I’ll know if they’ll be another American. The season begins March 29th and runs through July 5th. If her squad finishes in the top-four of the league, they qualify for the championship series which is played in Holland in September. Because of the timing, Holub will be leaving the Tigers in mid-season.

Holub finished 2013 at 29-4 overall with a 1.03 ERA, 26 complete games, 13 shutouts, three saves, and 345 strikeouts in 224 innings pitched. Holub was also one of the nation’s top hitters with a .426 batting average, 19 home runs, 10 doubles, three triples, 56 RBI, 62 runs scored, an .841 slugging percentage and .516 on-base percentage.
