FHSU Sports Information
After a fifth-place finish at the NWCA National Duals over the weekend, the Tigers jumped from outside the Top 20 to No. 6 in the latest Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll, released Wednesday.

Downing Signs With DCCC
By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post
Hays High Indian senior Layne Downing signed with Dodge City Community College to continue his baseball career. Downing has played second, third and shortstop in his time at Hays High, but has excelled the most at pitching.
At the plate, Downing is a career .347 hitter with 10 extra base hits, three of which were home runs, all in his senior year.
As a pitcher, Downing went 2-1 last season in six appearances, scattering just seven hits over 19.2 innings. Layne’s best performance came against Liberal when he pitched a complete game no hitter allowing just two walks and striking out nine.
Downing also played a key role in helping the Hays Eagles win the American Legion AAA state championship the past two summers. In 2012, Layne pitched the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings in the championship game helping the Eagles hold their lead and win the title. This past summer, Downing was one of the workhorses on the pitching staff, helping the Eagle make the regional tournament in Arkansas.
Downing said the coaches at Dodge City have talked about playing him at pitcher, third and possibly first base.

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post
GIRLS: Great Bend 70, Hays 43
While the score doesn’t look good, the Hays High Lady Indians showed much needed signs of aggression and willingness to shoot the ball Tuesday night in their loss to Great Bend. The Panthers led Hays early 5-0, but Hays scored back to back field goals to get with in one and had possession of the basketball. Hays however turned the ball over, starting a 12-2 Great Bend run creating a deficit the Indians could never over come falling 70-43.
Hays shot well beyond the arc hitting 5 of 10 three point shots, and 10 of 16 from the free throw line. Great Bend however shot 45% for the game and made 8 of 16 beyond the arc. The Indians achilles heal again was turnovers committing 30 in the game.
The Lady Indians were led by Audra Schmeidler with 15 points, including three of the Indians treys.
Hays falls to 0-8 on the year and 0-2 in the WAC. Great Bend ranked 8th in 5A moves to 6-1 and 2-0 in the conference. Great Bend was the fifth state ranked opponent the Indians have played in their first 8 games.

BOYS: Hays 70, Great Bend 25
Hays started the game on a 15-0 run and never looked back beating their rival Great Bend 70-25 on Tuesday night. Great Bend scored only two field goals in the first half at the :40 mark of the first quarter and the :25 mark of the second. Hays went on a 17-0 run in between the shots and pushed their lead to 34-5 at half. Hays opened the second half on another 15-0 run and lead midway through the third quarter 49-5. The Indians biggest lead came in the fourth quarter by fifty points.
Hays shot well all night making 25 of 56 shots and 6 of 12 from beyond the arc. Hays was also a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Great Bend shot just 27%, 9 of 33 and made 5 of 12 threes. Hays out rebounded Great Bend 40-15 in the game.
Seven players scored seven or more points in the game for Hays and only one made it to double figures, led by the 13 of Clayton Riedel.
The Indians move to 8-0 for the first time in 43 years and first time ever under head coach Rick Keltner. Great Bend has lost six in a row and is now 1-6 on the year. The Indians also move to 2-0 in WAC play.

Hays Post
GIRLS: Abilene 53, TMP 36
The TMP Lady Monarchs fell behind 7-0 early and couldn’t recover in Abilene on Tuesday. TMP trailed by eight at the end of the first quarter and 13 points at the half and the end of the third. The Lady Monarchs weren’t able to muster any momentum in the fourth quarter either, losing 53-36.
TMP dropped to 2-6 with the loss. Melissa Pfeifer was the lone Lady Monarch in double figures with 12 points. TMP is at home this Friday to take on Russell.
Samantha Younie Interview
Game Highlights
BOYS: Abilene 66, TMP 64
A 17 point third quarter lead wasn’t enough for the TMP Monarchs as they fall 66-64 in Abilene on Tuesday. TMP finished the first half on a six to nothing run to take a 12 point lead at the break. The Monarchs would score the first five points of the second half as well, leading 40-23 with six and half minutes to play in the third quarter. Abilene would storm back to take a 49-48 lead going into quarter number four.
That’s when the battle really started to sparkle. Both teams would trade blows throughout the fourth quarter. Abilene held a two point lead with just over six seconds to go in the game when Kameron Schmidt’s jumper was nearly all the way in the bucket and then somehow popped out at the buzzer. The Monarchs had five players in double figures but couldn’t pick up the win. TMP is now 3-5 on the year and will host Russell at the Kennedy Middle School Gymnasium on Friday.

Game Highlights
No. 5 Wichita State stays unbeaten
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Fred VanVleet had 22 points and seven rebounds and No. 5 Wichita State remained undefeated with a 72-50 victory over Bradley on Tuesday night.
Darius Carter added 11 points for the Shockers (18-0, 5-0 Missouri Valley Conference), who extended school records for winning streak and best start to a season in the first game as a top 5 team since 1981.
After overcoming a 19-point, second-half deficit in its last game, Wichita State took any mystery out of this game pretty quickly.
Walt Lemon scored 12 points, Tyshon Pickett added 11 and Omari Grier had 10 for Bradley (6-12, 1-4). Those three were a combined 12 of 37 from the field.
The Shockers’ two leading scorers, Cleanthony Early and Ron Baker, combined for just 13 points in 40 minutes, and it didn’t really matter.
Kansas State upends No. 25 Oklahoma
MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Marcus Foster scored 18 points, Nino Williams made four clinching free throws in the closing seconds and Kansas State held on to beat No. 25 Oklahoma 72-66 on Tuesday night.
Shane Southwell added 16 points for the Wildcats (13-4, 3-1 Big 12), who rallied from a 62-56 deficit with just over 5 minutes to play to turn back the streaking Sooners.

Ryan Spangler had a career-high 21 points and 14 rebounds, and Buddy Hield scored 12 points for Oklahoma (13-4, 2-2), but it wasn’t enough to offset a lousy night by Cameron Clark.
The Big 12’s leading scorer, Clark was held to two points on 1-for-9 shooting. He was stripped of the ball with 24.5 seconds left and the Sooners trailing 67-64.
The turnover forced Oklahoma to foul, and Williams made both free throws. Je’lon Hornbeak missed a 3-pointer at the other end and the Sooners fouled Williams, and again he knocked down both foul shots to help seal the game.

FHSU’s Watkins heading back to Washburn
By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

Former Washburn All-American linebacker Zach Watkins is returning to his alma mater to be the co-defensive coordinator after spending the last three seasons as an assistant at Fort Hays State where he coached the defensive line for two seasons and the inside linebackers for one.
Washburn made the announcement Monday on their website.
Watkins was a four-year starter at linebacker for Washburn from 2006-09 under current Fort Hays State head coach Chris Brown and defensive coordinator Cooper Harris. He put together a historic career for the Ichabods, registering 100 or more tackles in each season, compiling a school record 473 for his career. That mark also places him third all-time in NCAA Division II history.
Watkins, a native of Independence, Mo., graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Washburnin December of 2009 and completed his master’s degree in Sports Administration at Fort Hays State University in 2013.
No. 15 Kansas holds off No. 8 Iowa State
AMES, Iowa (AP) – Naadir Tharpe scored a career-high 23 points, freshman Andrew Wiggins had 17 points and 19 rebounds and No. 15 Kansas beat No. 8 Iowa State 77-70 on Monday night for its third straight win to open Big 12 play.

The Jayhawks (12-4, 3-0) handed the Cyclones their second consecutive loss after a 14-0 start.
Kansas opened the second half with a 16-5 run and led the rest of the way.
Joel Embiid finished with 16 points and five blocks for the Jayhawks, who outrebounded Iowa State 53-36 in perhaps their most impressive win of the season.
DeAndre Kane, who sprained an ankle in the loss to Oklahoma on Saturday, had 21 points for Iowa State (14-2, 2-2), which lost for the 17th time in 18 games against Kansas.
The Cyclones, the Big 12’s top 3-point shooting team, were a dreadful 4 of 25 from beyond the arc.
Kane, who led the Big 12 with 22.7 points, 6.3 assists and 3.3 steals through three league games, responded well enough to around the clock treatment on his left ankle that he has able to start.
It didn’t provide the early boost the Cyclones were looking for.
Kansas jumped all over Iowa State, rolling to a quick 15-4 lead less than 5 minutes in. But the Cyclones fought their way back to tie the game at 36-all on Kane’s 3 at the halftime buzzer.
The Jayhawks started the second half the way they did the first. Perry Ellis extended their lead to 52-41 with a slam with 13:32 left, and Embiid wrapped two baskets around a blocked shot as Kansas went ahead 64-53.
Kane could have made it a one-possession game with under a minute left, but he missed a layup and Tharpe answered with two free throws.
Kansas committed 24 turnovers, but it survived by shooting 49 percent from the field and dominating the glass.
Iowa State had longed for another crack at Kansas at home after the Jayhawks rallied for a contentious overtime win here last season.
Elijah Johnson tied the game with free throws with 4.9 seconds left after a foul call that had the Cyclones howling. Johnson then capped a brilliant late-game performance with a dunk with 2 seconds left and Kansas up 10, and some Iowa State fans tossed their giveaway plastic megaphones at the victorious Jayhawks in disgust.
But Kansas simply confounded this season’s Cyclones with their size and length, and Iowa State’s inability to knock down 3s was too much to overcome.
Melvin Ejim had 15 points for Iowa State, but forward Georges Niang had 11 points on 4-of-20 shooting from the field.
