Cats won’t face Michigan’s starting QB

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Michigan freshman quarterback Shane Morris will start in place of Devin Gardner in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

Gardner sustained a turf toe injury in the Wolverines’ final regular-season game wildcatagainst Ohio State and showed up in Arizona wearing a protective boot.

Coach Brady Hoke announced Thursday that Morris will make his first college start against Kansas State after Gardner was unable to practice Wednesday.

Morris played in three games this season, attempting nine passes. He sat out most of his senior season in high school because of mononucleosis.

As a result of Gardner’s injury, Morris has worked with Michigan’s first-team offense leading up to Saturday night’s bowl game in Tempe.

Lehman Named MIAA Athlete of the Week

https://www.horizonappliance.com/Fort Hays State junior center Kate Lehman was named the MIAA Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the second time this year on Monday (Dec. 23) for her efforts in Fort Hays State’s two wins last week. Lehman was also named the Athlete of the Week on December 9.

Lehman continued a streak of double-doubles, pushing it to six while helping FHSU go 2-0 this past week with wins over University of Saint Mary and Northwest Missouri State. The center also broke the MIAA career blocked shots record last week, and now has 269 for her career. She broke the old mark of 262 held by Esmary Vargas-Sanchez of Emporia State (2002-05). She broke the record on Monday, December 16 in the 100-34 win over Saint Mary.

Lehman put up averages of 18.5 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 5.0 blocked shots, while playing just 58 minutes of 90 possible minutes (one regulation game, one double-overtime game). She hit 63.6 percent of her field goals. Against University of Saint Mary, Lehman pulled down 10 boards and put up 16 points with six blocks in 17 minutes of action. Against MIAA foe Northwest Missouri State, Lehman finished the night with a massive double-double of 21 points and 17 rebounds, also collecting four blocked shots in the 79-69 double-overtime win.

Nine former Chiefs players join brain injury lawsuit

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Two NFL Hall of Famers are among nine former Kansas City Chiefs players who have joined a lawsuit that contends the team hid the risks of permanent brain injuries from repeated concussions.

Cornerback Albert Lewis and defensive end Art Still were added Saturday to the lawsuit initially filed this month on behalf of five former Chiefs players. Also joining the suit are Dino Hackett, Todd McNair, Fred Jones, Tim Barnett, Walker Lee Ashley, Emile Harry and Chris Smith.

All 14 plaintiffs were on the team between 1987 and 1993, a period when there was no collective bargaining agreement in place in the NFL.

The amended lawsuit also adds claims that artificial-surface fields during part of that time contributed to concussions.

The Indians won just two matches against the Greenbacks. Ross Hattan by a 4-2 decision at 126 and Conrad Vijnar by fall at 132. All of their other wins were because of an open weight class. They had only two wins against Plainville, Kaelen Dietze by fall at 160 and Ethan Deterding in a 1-0 decision at 182. The other victories came with open weight classes.

Points-a-plenty for Chiefs defense, special teams

Chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs coach Andy Reid keeps track of what he calls “miscellaneous points.”

Kansas City has a league-leading 11 touchdowns from defense and special teams with two games still to play in the regular season. That’s the third-most in NFL history.

Reid says that you don’t expect to score those touchdowns, “but you strive to get them.” And they’re a big reason why Kansas City is 11-3 and headed to the playoffs. The Chiefs host Indianapolis on Sunday.

Chiefs’ Smith building off perfect performance

Chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Alex Smith was perfect. At least, in terms of quarterback rating.

Smith was 17 of 20 for 287 yards and five touchdowns without an interception last weekend against the Raiders. That gave him a quarterback rating of 158.3, joining Trent Green in 2003 as the only players in Chiefs history to have a perfect mark.

Noteworthy? Sure, especially considering the Chiefs needed all the offense it could muster in a 56-31 shootout with the Raiders that kept them in the AFC West title hunt.

Now, Smith will try to build on his perfect performance when the Chiefs play the Colts on Sunday. Their game at Arrowhead Stadium could be a preview of a first-round playoff game that would be played in Indianapolis.
