K-State dominates glass in rout of Troy

Kansas_State_Wildcats7-342x250MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Will Spradling had a season-high 14 points and Marcus Foster also scored 14 points as Kansas State defeated Troy 72-43 on Sunday evening.

It is the ninth time in 10 games that Foster has reached double figures for the Wildcats.

Despite its undersized roster Kansas State dominated the Trojans on the boards grabbing 17 rebounds on the offensive end and 44 total.

Antoine Myers had 12 points and Wes Hinton added 10 points to pace the Trojans.

Kansas State entered the game with the Big 12’s best scoring defense at 61.2 points while also holding opponents to 26 percent shooting from 3-point range.

The Trojans finished at 36.2 shooting while converting on just 3-19 from 3-point range.

The Wildcats left little doubt from the start. Seven points from Foster backed an opening 14-2 run by the Wildcats over the first four minutes of the first half.

The scoring run was aided by a clean and crisp Kansas State offense that didn’t see its first turnover until the 9:58 mark of the first half. The Wildcats finished the game with only eight turnovers.

The Wildcats used a dozen assists to break apart the Trojans’ 3-2 zone and score 18 first-half points in the paint.

Kevin Thomas was the lone Trojan to score until a Kelton Ford basket made it 24-9 with 6:10 left in the half.

Kansas State shot 40.5 percent from the field in the first half and pulled down an impressive 28 rebounds. The number was evenly split on both ends of the floor.

Troy’s 15 first-half points were its lowest output since facing Arkansas State last season.

Kansas State used another strong scoring run to open the second half, pushing its lead to 50-17. The 33-point margin was the largest of the contest.

The Trojans added back-to-back 3-point baskets from Wes Hinton to cut the Wildcat lead to 23 points, but an 11-3 run quickly pushed the margin back to 31 points.

Spradling added eight of his season-high points in the second half.

Jamaal Charles has five TDs as Chiefs clinch playoffs

ChiefsOAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Jamaal Charles carried the Kansas City Chiefs straight into the playoffs with a record performance.

Charles tied a franchise record with five touchdowns in a game and gained 215 yards from scrimmage as the Chiefs beat the Raiders 56-31 on Sunday to clinch at least a wild-card spot.

Alex Smith threw five TD passes, going 17-for-20 for 287 yards to make the Chiefs the fourth team ever to make the playoffs a year after losing at least 14 games. Kansas City (11-3) is tied for first place in the AFC West with Denver, but needs help to win the division because the Broncos swept the season series.

Matt McGloin threw four interceptions and lost a fumble while sharing time with Terrelle Pryor as Oakland (4-10) allowed the most points in franchise history and lost its fourth straight game. The Raiders had seven turnovers overall.

The performance drew constant boos from a crowd frustrated over 11 straight seasons without a winning record and raised questions about whether the Raiders are showing enough progress in year two under coach Dennis Allen to convince owner Mark Davis to keep him around for a third season.

There is no questioning the progress the Chiefs have made in their first year under coach Andy Reid. He took over a 2-14 team and authored an impressive turnaround.

The addition of Smith to a talented roster that featured six Pro Bowl players also helped. Charles was one of those Pro Bowlers a year ago. but he never had a game quite like this even though he only rushed for 20 yards in eight carries.

He did most of his work in the passing game, beating blitzes with screen passes and also having success running patterns downfield. He caught eight passes for 195 yards and four touchdowns in the third-most productive receiving day by a running back since the 1970 merger.

Charles also joined Shaun Alexander, Jerry Rice and Clinton Portis as the only players since the merger to score five touchdowns and gain at least 200 yards from scrimmage in a single game.

Ellis, Embiid lead No. 13 Kansas past New Mexico

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Joel Embiid had just picked up his second foul, and like so many other games this season, he knew he was going to be spending the rest of the first half sitting on the Kansas bench.

The 7-foot freshman vowed to make up for it in the second half.

Embiid scored 16 of his career-high 18 points over the final 20 minutes, leading the No. 13 Jayhawks to an 80-63 victory over New Mexico on Saturday night that ended a two-game skid.

”I was frustrated, even though I didn’t think the second one was a foul,” said Embiid, a native of Cameroon who’s only been playing basketball for a few years. ”Yeah, I wanted it bad, and they wanted to throw me the ball and let me score, and that’s what I needed to do.”

Perry Ellis scored 21 points and Andrew Wiggins, despite dealing with foul trouble all night, added 11 for the Jayhawks (7-3), who led 39-38 at halftime before using two big runs to put it away.

It was the Jayhawks’ ninth straight win at the Sprint Center, including their run to last year’s Big 12 tournament title. After dropping games at Colorado and Florida, the win also kept Kansas from losing three straight non-conference games for the first time since the 1982-83 season.

”We knew we had to hit them first,” said the Jayhawks’ Wayne Selden, who finished with 10 points. ”That was our main goal, be the first one on the floor and be the most aggressive.”

Cameron Bairstow and Kendall Williams had 24 points apiece for New Mexico (7-2), but that was about it for the Lobos. Alex Kirk, who came into the game averaging 18.6 points, was held to just five on 2-for-8 shooting before fouling out with 2:53 remaining in the game.

New Mexico was just 2 of 14 from beyond the arc.

”We played really well in the first half, but I thought Kansas played really good. I thought that was the best offensive game Kansas has played all year,” New Mexico coach Craig Neal said. ”We got into some foul trouble and did some things we weren’t used to doing, and we have to improve on that.”

The Jayhawks likewise struggled with foul trouble in the first half, depriving coach Bill Self of Ellis, Embiid and Jamari Traylor for long periods of time. That allowed the 6-foot-9 Bairstow to go to work inside, scoring on an array of putbacks and spin moves.

The senior from Brisbane, Australia, had 16 points at the break.

”We wanted to put them in a position to really feel pressure,” Bairstow said.

The Lobos got within one at halftime on a buzzer-beating basket by Arthur Edwards, but Kansas quickly seized control with a 16-4 run to start the second half.

Embiid had nine points and Ellis the other seven during the spurt, but it was really fueled by the Jayhawks’ defense, which finally slowed down Bairstow and Williams on the other end.

The Lobos chipped away at their 55-42 deficit, most of the surge coming from the foul line. By the time Williams converted a four-point play, New Mexico had managed to scrap and claw to 63-58 with 8:03 left, and briefly silence a crowd heavily in favor of Kansas.

That’s when the Jayhawks turned to Ellis and Embiid again.

Embiid answered Williams with a pair of foul shots, Ellis added a free throw moments later, and Embiid threw down a dunk as the crowd roared. Ellis added a dunk of his own moments later, forcing New Mexico to burn a timeout that didn’t do a whole lot of good.

”Our bigs were really good,” Self said. ”Perry was the most consistent one and he scored the most points, but there was a stretch in the second half where Joel looked pretty good.”

Williams missed after the timeout and Embiid scored again at the other end, pushing the Jayhawks’ lead to 74-59 with 4 1/2 minutes remaining in the game.

”We felt really good after halftime, really fought them off. It really boiled down to their second-half run,” Williams said. ”That was really the story.”

Kansas merely coasted from there, wrapping up the victory in the first meeting between the schools since the 1964-65 season and ending nearly a month spent playing games away from Allen Fieldhouse.

”We came out a lackadaisical to start the second half and they took advantage of it,” Neal said. ”Kansas came out really aggressive in the second half and that cost us.”

Quick Start Carries Tigers to Big Home Win

https://www.horizonappliance.com/
Carson Konrade hit five three-pointers and led the Fort Hays State Tigers (8-2) with 19 points as the Tigers snapped their two-game skid with a 95-50 rout of Central Christian Saturday afternoon at Gross Coliseum.

Mark Johnson Postgame Interview

Marty Wendel Postgame Interview

The Tigers raced out to an early 14-2 lead, holding Central Christian without a field goal for over six minutes to start the game. The Tigers had runs of 22-0, 13-0, 10-0 and 8-0 in building a 28-point lead at halftime and were up as many as 52 in the second half.

Game Highlights

Fort Hays State shot a season-high 60-percent for the game including 9-for-23 from beyond the arc while holding Central Christian to 26-percent from the field.

Dwayne Brunson scored 14, James Fleming 12 and Marty Wendel 10.

No. 12 Wichita State beats Tennessee

Wichita State Logo 2WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Tekele Cotton scored all 19 of his points in the second half and No. 12 Wichita State beat Tennessee 70-61 on Saturday as the Shockers got off to the best start in school history.

Darius Carter had 11 points and 14 rebounds and Cleanthony Early added 13 points for the Shockers (10-0).

Jordan McRae scored 26 points for Tennessee (6-3), which shot 16 of 47 (34 percent) over the final 35 minutes.

Trailing at halftime for the fifth time this season, WichitaState methodically worked its way to a 39-34 lead – the largest of the game for either team to that point – on Cotton’s tip-in with 15:06 remaining.

But WichitaState would not make another field goal for 5:57.

A 10-2 run by the Volunteers contained three dunks and Jarnell Stokes’ slam with 10:22 to play tied it 41-41.

Just 37 seconds later, Stokes dunked again while being fouled. He made the free throw for a 44-41 lead.

That is when Cotton took over.

He made two free throws. Then blocked two Tennessee shots, leading to a transition opportunity he finished with a runner while being fouled.

The crowd – attendance was 14,356 in the downtown Intrust Bank Arena – went crazy, and WichitaState would not trail again.

Cotton’s three-point play made it 46-44 with 9:09 remaining.

Four minutes later, a 3-pointer by Cotton started a 7-0 run that gave Wichita State a 58-49 lead with 4:47 remaining.

A 3 by Early beat the shot-clock buzzer and made it 63-51 with 2:43 to play, allowing WichitaState to milk the shot clock the rest of the way.

The anticipated grinding pace of the game was nowhere to be found at the beginning. WichitaState and Tennessee combined to make 13 of their first 20 field goal attempts, including all five 3-pointers. WichitaState led 17-16 at that point behind eight points from Fred VanVleet.

But the rest of the half was quite the opposite as the teams combined to go 7 of 29 over the final 12 minutes, 1 of 13 from behind the 3-point line.

Neither team led by more than three points in the half’s final 12 minutes and the Volunteers led 26-25 at halftime.

Hutch High’s Dreiling Moving on

Hutchinson High School head football coach Randy Dreiling announced to his team Friday that he has taken a job with St. Thomas Aquinas in Kansas City. Dreiling will resign both as head football coach and physical education instructor.

Dreiling, who just completed his 17th season as Salthawk head coach, was 160-38 and won seven state titles. Overall, Dreiling has coached 24 years and has a record of 185-77.

Under Dreiling, HHS won football championships in either Class 6A or Class 5A in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011. HHS was in playoffs from 2000 through 2012.

HHS Athletic Director Eric Armstrong will begin the search for Dreiling’s successor immediately.

Chiefs’ Special Teams Becoming Difference Maker

Chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The most accurate description of Dave Toub may be that he’s a special teams savant.

He’s able to make the rudimentary plays in a football game, kickoffs and punts, seem downright exhilarating. He’s able to get guys who’d rather be playing offense or defense to volunteer for kick coverage or a field-goal unit. He’s able to coax points out of places they shouldn’t be scored.

In fact, what he’s helped Kansas City accomplish through its first 13 games has only been matched or exceeded seven times since 1941, and two of those were by units that Toub coached in Chicago: The Chiefs already have two punt return touchdowns and two kickoff return touchdowns.

“He loves special teams,” explained wide receiver Dexter McCluster, who has both of the Chiefs’ punt return touchdowns. “He probably wakes up and watches film in his bathroom.”

It’s hard to find guys with that kind of zeal for special teams.

The job usually comes under the microscope only when an important field goal is missed, or when an opponent springs a big return of its own. It’s a thankless task. And not surprisingly, coaches tend to gravitate toward sexier positions on offense or defense as soon as they can.

But for Toub, who tried and failed to make it in the NFL as an offensive lineman out of UTEP, the position is also a passion. He spent time as a defensive line coach in the college ranks, but has been coaching special teams since joining Andy Reid’s staff in Philadelphia in 2001.

Game Highights

Hays High Boys 86, Colby 50

The fourth ranked Hays High Indians came out early and mashed the gas pedal early against Colby and never let up.  Hays scored the first 11 points of the game before a 3 pointer from Colby came almost halfway through the first quarter.  Hays built their lead as high as 16 in the first quarter before taking a 24-13 lead after the first eight minutes.

The Indians lead was cut to nine a little over 2:00 minutes in the second, when Hays went on a 15-2, seizing control of the game and the outcome was never in doubt.  Hays led 47-23 at half time and moved to 4-0 with an 86-50 lead.

Hays shot 56% in their high scoring game of the young season.  The Indians were 7 of 12 beyond the arc while turning the ball over just seven times.  Colby did shoot 46% but turned the ball over 27 times and made just 3 of 14 three’s.  Colby drops to 0-4 on the year with all their games so far coming in Hays.

Brady Werth led Hays with 25 points and 6 blocks.  It is Werth’s sixth game with 20 plus points and now has over 500 in his career.  Jordan Windholz scored a career high 21 and Isaiah Nunnery scored in double figures for the first time, the sophomore posted 10 in the win.  Clayton Riedel led the team with seven rebounds.

Both Hays teams go on the road for the first time this season when they head to Junction City on Tuesday.  The Blue Jays face two more WAC teams Friday and Saturday playing Great Bend and Dodge City.

Zimmerman Named All-American

Zimmerman Kansas State senior defensive back Ty Zimmerman was named to the USA Today All-America team, the publication has announced.

Zimmerman, who earned second team honors, picked up All-America honors for the second-straight season. Last year, the Junction City, Kan., product was a Second Team All-American by CBSSports.com, recorded third team honors from the Associated Press and was an honorable mention selection by Sports Illustrated.

A two-time team captain, Zimmerman logged 69 tackles in 10 games in 2013 to go along with three tackles for loss and three interceptions. He returned two of his interceptions for touchdowns to lead the Big 12 and tie for second nationally in that department. He has 13 career interceptions to tie for third in school history, while his 221 career interception-return yards rank second.

Earlier this week, Zimmerman was named an All-Big 12 First Team performer by both the league’s coaches and the Associated Press. His designations made him the first player in school history to garner four-straight all-conference accolades, while he is one of just four Big 12 defensive backs to earn four All-Big 12 honors with at least one of those being a first-team designation.

Kansas State travels to Tempe, Ariz., to take on Michigan in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, December 28, at Sun Devil Stadium. The game kicks off at 9:15 p.m. (CT) and will be televised to a national audience on ESPN. Fans can order tickets through the K-State Athletics Ticket office online at www.k-statesports.com/tickets or by phone at 1-800-221-CATS. Fans are strongly encouraged to order through K-State’s official allotment to ensure that all Wildcat fans are seated in the official K-State sections of the stadium.
