K-State to Meet Michigan in the Desert

KState Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl(AP) — Kansas State is headed back to the desert, this time to face Michigan in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.

The Wildcats (7-5) lost to Oregon 35-17 in last year’s Fiesta Bowl, but earned a return trip to Arizona after finishing strong this season.

Kansas State lost four of its first six games, including to FCS school North Dakota State at home, before reeling off four straight wins. The Wildcats finished with a flourish, rolling over rival Kansas 31-10 in their regular-season finale on Saturday.

Michigan (7-5) opened the season 5-0 before fading down the stretch. The Wolverines lost four of their final five games, though came within a failed 2-point conversion of knocking off then-No. 2 Ohio State on Nov. 30 in their final game.

Chiefs Thump Redskins

Chiefs(AP) — The Kansas City scored early and often Sunday, breaking a three-game losing streak with a 45-10 embarrassment of the Washington Redskins.

The Chiefs improved to 10-3 by dominating an opponent that offered little resistance. They scored on their first four possessions, sacked Robert Griffin III five times and Kirk Cousins once, and returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns.

The score was 17-0 after the first quarter and 38-10 at halftime. Quintin Demps immediately answered the lone Redskins touchdown with a 95-yard kickoff return, part of a stunning tally of 321 return yards by Kansas City in the first half alone.

The Redskins fell to 3-10, increasing speculation that coach Mike Shanahan will be gone at the end of the season.

Fort Hays State Drops Second Straight Overtime Game

https://www.horizonappliance.com/
The Fort Hays State Tigers couldn’t hold onto an eight point second half lead on Saturday and drop their second straight game in overtime falling 82-79 to Missouri Western Saturday at the MWU fieldhouse in St. Joseph.

Fort Hays trailed by four at halftime, but put together a 13-0 run to go up eight with 6:31 to play. They had a chance to win in regulation, but a Craig Nicholson three pointer bounced off the back of the rim. Missouri Western took control hitting two  consecutive three-pointers in the overtime period to go up by six. Fort Hays would get as close as one but could never grab the lead.

Coach Mark Johnson

Tigers put five in double figures lead by Craig Nicholson who scored a game high 23 points, but only had three assists with six turnovers of FHSU’s 16 turnovers. Dwayne Brunson added 16 points, Tomislav Gabric chipped in with 12  while Carson Konrade and James Fleming both added 10. The loss drops the Tigers to 7-2 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA.

Sporting KC warms crowd, takes MLS Cup

Sporting KC small logo(AP) — Aurelien Collin scored the equalizer in the second half of the MLS Cup, then drove home the deciding penalty kick to give Sporting Kansas City a dramatic victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday night and its first league title since 2000.

Alvaro Saborio, who missed the Western Conference finals because of injury, scored for Real Salt Lake in the 52nd minute, but Collin answered with a header in the 76th minute.

It remained that way through regulation and 30 minutes of overtime, and then the teams engaged in the longest penalty-kick shootout in championship history — one that both sides had chances to win before Collin’s shot and Jimmy Nielsen’s save gave Sporting KC the 7-6 victory.

Desoto 60  TMP 49

The DeSoto Wildcats stopped TMP’s chances of a 4th Place finish at the Hays City Shootout with a 60-49 win over the Monarchs.  Desoto led by as many as 10 points in the 1st Half but TMP scrapped to within 5 points at intermission.  The Monarchs took their first lead early in the 3rd Quarter at 33-32 and would build that lead to 3 points at 35-32.  DeSoto was able to tie the game at 35 before TMP went back up 37-35.

That is where the fun ended as the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run spanning the end of the 3rd Quarter and into the 4th Quarter and never looked back.  Max Megaffin led TMP with 11 points.  The Monarchs are back in action on December 17th at Phillipsburg.

Buffs edge Jayhawks at buzzer

Kansas Jayhawk Logo(AP)  Askia Booker brought Colorado fans storming onto the court by swishing a 25-footer at the buzzer Saturday to lift Colorado to a 75-72 victory over No. 6 Kansas, marking the program’s first victory over the Jayhawks in 20 tries.

Colorado (9-1) squandered a six-point lead with 1:44 left and Kansas tied the game with a bucket by Perry Ellis with 4 seconds left.

But after a timeout, the Buffs got the ball to Booker, who dribbled a few paces past half court and launched the shot that hit nothing but net.

The fans exploded onto the court to celebrate the program’s ninth straight win — and its first over Kansas (6-2) since 2003.

Booker and Spencer Dinwidde led CU with 15 points each.

Wiggins led the Jayhawks, who have lost two of their last three, with 22.

Indians Boys To Title Game, Girls Play in AM

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

For a second straight game the Hays High Lady Indians played a state ranked team at the Hays City Shootout.  For a second straight time the Indians also came out slowly and put themselves  in a hole to big to dig out of.  Down 16-0 to start the game, Hays could muster just a single point in the first quarter against DeSoto and trailed 19-1.  The Indians trailed by 2o at half time and lost by 27 for a second straight night 56-29.

Sophomore Audra Schmeidler led the team in scoring with eight for the now 0-2 Lady Indians who will face TMP in the 7th place game at Hays Middle school at 10:00 am Saturday morning.

The Hays High boys raced out to a 9-2 lead against Newton after being tied at 2 early on, then used a 16-3 run in the second quarter to build a 21 point lead at 33-12.  Hays pushed the lead to 22 early in the third quarter, but didn’t score over the next 4:50 and a nine point Newton run cut the lead down to 13 (40-27) entering the fourth quarter.

Hays though responded with a 10-2 run, placing the game out of reach for Newton and went on for the 60-35 victory.

Jordan Windholz led the team scoring 13 and Brady Werth added 12.

For a second straight night the Hays defense held their opponent to just 32% shooting.  Hays shot 22 of 48 for 46%.  Hays once again limited their turnovers, committing just eight while forcing Newton into 25.

Hays is now 2-0 and will face Garden City in the title game Saturday evening at 7:00.  Hays will try to win back to back shoot out titles for just the second time.  The Indians last did it in 2003 and 2004.
