Wichita State LogoWICHITA, Kan. (AP) – Fred VanVleet had a career-high 18 points, Cleanthony Early added 14 and No. 16 Wichita State pulled away in the second half to beat William & Mary 79-62 on Thursday night.

Ron Baker added 13 points and Kadeem Coleby had 10 for the Shockers (3-0), who are off to another hot start after their dramatic NCAA tournament run last season. They have won 20 straight non-conference games at home by an average of 22 points.

This one wasn’t easy – the Shockers trailed by a point at halftime. But they took advantage of their superior size and depth in the second half to pull away down the stretch.

Marcus Thornton had 18 points to lead the Tribe (1-2), who were just 11 of 22 from the free throw line. Tim Rusthoven added 13 points and freshman Omar Prewitt finished with 11.

FHSU Volleyball Falls Short at Home

https://www.horizonappliance.com/
Fort Hays State fell 3-1 (21-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-22) on Wednesday evening to Emporia State inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Despite taking the first set, FHSU struggled in the second set and let late leads slip away in the third and fourth. FHSU dropped to 13-18 (3-12 MIAA) on the season while ESU improved to 17-10 (8-7 MIAA).

Jenna Ulrich’s first block assist of the match gave her the school’s career total blocks record for the NCAA era. Ulrich recorded four blocks in the match and now sits at 435 for her career, passing the old mark of 431 set by Jennifer Brandes, who just was inducted into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame earlier this month.

FHSU led the entire first set, using consecutive kills by Taylor Mares to jump ahead, stretching the lead to as many as three (9-6) early in the set.  Up 16-12 (which tied the largest lead of the set), the Tigers allowed the Hornets close within one, 18-17, before calling timeout. Late in the set, two straight kills by Mallory Flagor and a Hornet setting error gave the Tigers game one, 25-21.

FHSU’s strong effort continued early in the second set, as the team led by as many as three on three occasions before ESU rallied to tie it, 12-12.  After battling back and forth to 15-all, the Hornets grabbed control with a 10-2 run and took the set, 25-17.

Out of intermission, ESU led 5-1 before a Tiger rally tied it at 9-9 on Flagor’s 10th kill of the evening. The teams traded points until 14-14, when a quick two-point burst, highlighted by a powerful Camille Hubert kill, gave a small advantage to FHSU.  Up 19-16, FHSU controlled the match until 23-21, as two ESU points forced a FHSU timeout.  The Tigers could not stop the run and dropped the set, 26-24.

FHSU stalled to start the fourth set, falling behind 14-8 before roaring back with a 7-0 run. Later in the set, down 21-19, FHSU again fought off elimination with a three-point rally to take a one-point lead, 22-21.  That was short lived as ESU regained control and took the match, 25-22.

Hubert led the Tigers with 13 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double. Sara Hewson also had a double-double of 12 kills and a team-leading 25 digs. Mares reached double figures in kills as well with 12. Libby Ary recorded a double-double of 28 assists and 13 digs.

Carly Spicer was the only Hornet to reach double figures in kills with 12. Sydney Hartman paced ESU in assists with 24 and libero Kelly Holden had a team-high 19 digs.

The Tigers close out the home portion of their 2013 schedule on Friday (Nov. 15) for a senior night matchup against Oklahoma-Panhandle State. FHSU will honor Hubert, Samantha, Madison Schwartz, Ulrich and Makenzie Weinman prior to the game.

(AP) – A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe will play Sunday night against Denver after his arrest for speeding and possession of marijuana over the weekend.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Wednesday because he was not authorized to discuss the situation. Chiefs coach Andy Reid is expected to address Bowe’s status for the key AFC West showdown after the team’s morning walk-through.
Bowe was pulled over for speeding Sunday in the Kansas City suburb of Riverside. Police said an officer smelled “a strong odor of marijuana from inside of the vehicle.” He was cited for speeding and possession of a controlled substance, police said.

Late Rally Lifts No. 5 Kansas Past No. 4 Duke

CHICAGO (AP) – Andrew Wiggins scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half, outplaying Jabari Parker down the stretch and helping No. 5 Kansas knock off fourth-ranked Duke 94-83 on Tuesday night.

Parker, a former prep star at nearby Simeon High School, had 27 points, nine rebounds and two steals in a spectacular homecoming. But it was his fellow freshman star that made the biggest plays in the final minutes of a taut thriller between two storied programs.

Wiggins drained a stepback jumper to give the Jayhawks an 85-81 lead with 1:33 to go, and then had a fast-break dunk after a steal by Perry Ellis. Wiggins held his arms out and yelled after the big jam.

Ellis finished with 24 points, and Wiggins also had eight rebounds for the Jayhawks.

FHSU Men’s Soccer Headed to NCAA Tournament

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

Fort Hays State men’s soccer received its second consecutive berth into the NCAA Tournament in just the third year of existence for the program as the No. 2 seed in the Central Regional. The Tigers will play Lindenwood, the No. 1 seed, on either Nov. 21 or 22.

The exact location of FHSU’s matchup will be determined by Sunday, Nov. 17 based on the outcome of the other Super Region 3 matchups.

Both Fort Hays State and Lindenwood are already in the round of 16 teams as the Central Region receives only two selections to the tournament. The teams will meet in what is virtually a regional final, before meeting the team that comes out to the Elite Eight from the Midwest Regional.

Fort Hays State enters the tournament at 12-4-3 overall, and is 1-0-1 against Lindenwood this season.  The Tigers dropped a 4-3 contest to the Lions in St. Charles, Mo., on Oct. 3, and tied LU in the MIAA Tournament final on Saturday (Nov. 9), though finished second by falling on penalty kicks (6-5). Lindenwood is the only team in NCAA Division II without a loss yet.

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

Fort Hays State sophomore guard Craig Nicholson was named the MIAA Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week on Monday (Nov. 11) for his performance in Fort Hays State’s two season opening wins this past weekend (Nov. 9-10) in Minnesota.

Nicholson had a huge opening weekend, averaging a double-double in points (24.5) and assists (10.0). In the season opener at Southwest Minnesota State, Nicholson scored a career-high 29 points and dished out 11 assists (one shy of his career high), helping the Tigers to an 89-72 win. He went 14-of-15 at the free-throw line in that game, making his first 12 attempts. Nine of his 11 assists in the game were on 3-point field goals, helping the Tigers shoot 72.2 percent beyond the arc as a team (13-of-18). He was just two rebounds shy of a triple-double, recording a team-high eight.

Nicholson capped the weekend with 20 points and nine assists in the 97-90 overtime win over Upper Iowa. He did the majority of his damage at the free-throw line, where he went 12-of-14 and was perfect beyond the 3-point line (2-of-2).

Tigers Hold Off Pesky Upper Iowa Team in Overtime

https://www.horizonappliance.com/
(To play audio file, move cursor to left of media player and left click.)

In a back-and-forth game that saw 14 lead changes and 12 ties, Fort Hays State managed to hold off Upper Iowa 97-90 in overtime Sunday in Marshall, Minn. Fort Hays State moved to 2-0 on the season, picking up two key in-region wins away from home, while Upper Iowa dropped to 0-2.
Mark Johnson Postgame Interview
Upper Iowa tied the game with 39 seconds to go in regulation on a 3-point field goal and nearly hit a game-winning shot after a FHSU miss on the other end, but a 6-0 run by the Tigers to start overtime proved to be too much for the Peacocks to recover from.

Neither team could find separation in the first half. Fort Hays State’s largest lead in the opening frame was six points at 13-7 and Upper Iowa’s largest lead before halftime was five at 21-16. FHSU eventually held a 40-39 lead at halftime.

FHSU opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take a 10-point lead and led by that margin two more times before Upper Iowa stormed back to take a 63-62 lead with 10:17 to go. A James Fleming three-point play put the Tigers back in front all the way until the 3-point shot that tied the game under a minute left in regulation. In that span, Upper Iowa pulled within one point four times but could never get a lead.

FHSU held Upper Iowa scoreless in overtime until a three-point field goal with 1:38 to go pulled UIU back within three. But, Carson Konrade responded with a three-point field goal on the next trip down the floor for FHSU, pushing the lead back to six with 1:18 to go. FHSU would hit free-throws the rest of the way to keep UIU at arm’s length.

Fort Hays State was solid at the free-throw line all afternoon where it shot 90 percent (27-of-30). The Tigers missed only one attempt at the line in each half and the overtime period.

After just two points in the season opener on Saturday, Dwayne Brunson returned to his scoring form on Sunday with a team-high 25 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Craig Nicholson hit the 20-point mark for the second straight game, nearly recording another double-double with 20 points and nine assists. He went for 29 and 11 in Saturday’s contest.

Tomislav Gabric recorded his first double-double as a Tiger, going for 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jake Stoppel was just one rebound short of a double-double, recording 11 points and nine rebounds. Fleming also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points.

Josh Weeber led Upper Iowa with 26 points. Jimmy Roth had 17, Bo Pagel had 16, and Joey Woods added 14.

FHSU shot 45.6 percent from the field overall and 36.4 percent beyond the 3-point line. Upper Iowa shot at a 40.9 percent clip for the game and 40 percent beyond the 3-point line. The Peacocks hit 12-of-30 3-point attempts in the game. They were also solid from the charity stripe at 80 percent overall.

Fort Hays State has one more game on the road before its home opener. The Tigers play at Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 8 pm, looking to avenge a two-point loss at home last year. First action at home for FHSU will be Tuesday, Nov. 19 against Newman University.
