Chiefs Remain Unbeaten

Chiefs logoLinebacker Tamba Hali and cornerback Sean Smith returned turnovers for touchdowns in extending the Kansas City Chiefs’ perfect start to nine straight games with a 23-13 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Hali put the Chiefs ahead for good by scoring on an 11-yard fumble return with 12:47 remaining. Smith changed the momentum of the game by intercepting Jeff Tuel’s pass at the goal line and returning it 100 yards to tie it at 10 in the opening minutes of the second half.

Kansas City’s opportunistic defense made up for its own deficiencies as well as an Alex Smith-led offense that managed just 210 yards. Buffalo (3-6) had a season-best 470 yards of offense.

Tuel, an undrafted rookie, struggled in his first NFL start. He went 18 of 39 for 229 yards passing with a touchdown and two interceptions while filling in for interim starter Thad Lewis, sidelined by bruised ribs.

Brown’s touchdown runs covered 2, 3, 1 and 30 yards for Texas (6-2, 5-0), which remains in a tie for first place in the Big 12. Case McCoy passed for 196 yards with two interceptions in Texas’ first home game since Sept. 21. The Longhorns held Kansas to 306 total yards.

KANSAS CITY, MO (October 31, 2013) – The Kansas City Royals announced today that the club has exercised its 2014 club option on starting pitcher James Shields. Consistent with club policy, terms of the option were not disclosed.

Shields, 31, was traded to the Royals on December 9, 2012 and immediately became the ace of the pitching staff. He posted a 13-9 record with a 3.15 ERA in an American League-best 228.2 innings in his first season in Kansas City. The veteran righty also led the league in quality starts (27), tied for the American League lead in games started (34) and ranked seventh in strikeouts (196). His 27 quality starts were tied for the third-most by a Royals pitcher and were the top total since Kevin Appier posted 29 in 1993.

Shields was honored earlier today with the 2013 Joe Burke Special Achievement Award by the Kansas City Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA). The award honors an unsung hero or a player that the writers feel deserved recognition for an outstanding season.
