Three Royals make history

RoyalsThe Kansas City Royals made history on Tuesday night. For the first time, three Royals players took home American League Rawlings Gold Glove awards.

Left fielder Alex Gordon, first baseman Eric Hosmer and catcher Salvador Perez were honored as the best defenseman at their respective positions.

It is the first time since 1989 that Kansas City has had multiple players win a Gold Glove in the same season.

Gordon became the first Royal to win three-straight Gold Glove awards since second baseman Frank White won six straight from 1977-82.

Gordon joins Amos Otis (1971, 1973-74) as the only Royals outfielder to win three awards.

“I’ve got a trophy case back in Lincoln, so this one won’t be the chip-and-dip tray,” Gordon said. “This one will actually go up in the trophy case. It means a lot. The first one was pretty special, just because it’s the first one, but to be able to share it with two teammates makes this one the best one of all.”

Gordon tied for the Major-League lead with 17 outfield assists, after finishing second in 2012 and first in 2011.

His 54 assists since the start of 2011 are the most in baseball — 16 more than Detroit’s Torii Hunter. Gordon led AL left fielders in games played (160), innings (1,3641/3), total chances (341) and putouts (323), while committing just one error for a .997 fielding percentage.

Hosmer became the first Royals first baseman to be honored with a Gold Glove, and was the first Royals infielder to be honored since Mark Grudzielanek (2B) in 2006.

A finalist for a Gold Glove in 2012, Hosmer earned the award after leading AL first baseman in games played (158) and assists (122). He also finished second in innings (1,3721/3), total chances (1,335) and putouts (1,205). His .994 fielding percentage ranked fourth among the league’s first basemen with at least 1,200 chances.

Perez is just the second Royals’ catcher to be honored with a Gold Glove, joining Bob Boone in 1989.

Named an All-Star for the first time in his career, Perez led AL catchers in assists with 71, which was a team record. He also threw out 23 runners. His 35.2 caught stealing percentage ranked second among qualifying catchers. Perez also ranked second among AL backstops in games (137), innings (11151/3), total chances (1,008), putouts (930).

He was also charged with just three passed balls, the fewest among AL catchers with at least 100 games behind the plate.

The Royals now have 23 Gold Gloves honorees in franchise history.

FHSU Volleyball Falls To No. 7 Nebraska-Kearney

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

The Fort Hays State volleyball hadn’t won a set over rival Nebraska-Kearney since 2005. They ended that streak on Tuesday night but the Lopers continued their dominance over the Tigers defeating them for the 16th straight match 3-1 at Gross Coliseum, snapping the Tigers six-match win streak. FHSU fals to 12-13 overall and 3-8 in the MIAA while the seventh-ranked Lopers improve to 22-3 and 8-2 in the conference.

Kurt Kohler Postgame Interview

Taylor Mares hit .296 in the match and led the Tigers with 13 kills. Libby Ary recorded a team-high 14 assists while Makenzie Weinman had 18 digs and Jenna Ulrich six block assists.

UNK scored the first three points of the opening set and won it 25-13. The Tigers rallied from a 16-11 deficit in the second with a 7-1 run and win the set 25-22. They raced out to a 5-1 lead in the third but the Lopers used a 12-3 run late to take control and win 25-18. UNK dominated the fourth 25-11.

The Tiger hit .057 for the match compared to UNK’s .264.

Fort Hays State hits the road this weekend for MIAA matches at Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State.  The Tigers take on UCO at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, and PSU on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Kansas Rolls in Exhibition Opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Top prospect Andrew Wiggins scored 16 points in his Allen Fieldhouse debut, leading Kansas to a 97-57 rout of Pittsburg State in its exhibition opener Tuesday night.

Wiggins, who many believe will be the No. 1 pick in next year’s NBA draft, got off to an inauspicious start for the Jayhawks when he traveled the first time he touched the ball. Wiggins appeared jittery playing in front of a raucous crowd and struggled to get into rhythm.

Then again, new rules against hand-checking led to a plethora of fouls, and nobody got into much of a rhythm. The teams combined for 50 fouls and 61 free throws.

Wiggins wasn’t without highlights. He made a strong move along the baseline to score his first basket of the game, and then caught an alley-oop pass from Jamari Traylor and slammed it down over the Gorillas’ Trevor Gregory as the crowd roared.

Wiggins returned the favor later in the game, throwing up a pass that 7-footer Joel Embiid – another of the Jayhawks’ talented freshmen – threw down over a defender.

Perry Ellis had 16 points and eight rebounds, Andrew White III added 12 points and freshman Brannen Greene finished with 10 for the Jayhawks, who were chosen as co-favorites with Oklahoma State to win the Big 12 for an unprecedented 10th straight season.

Devon Branch had 25 points for Pittsburg State and Alex Williams added 15.

The Gorillas, a strong Division II program, hung around most of the first half. Josiah Gustafson’s 3-pointer just past the midway point got them within 21-20, and at one point Kansas coach Bill Self irritatingly called a timeout to lay into his defense.

Whatever he said in the huddle must have worked.

The Jayhawks went on a 12-2 run over the next few minutes, seizing control of the game. The production came from just about everyone in their young but talented lineup, including Wiggins, who started it with a basket and ended it with his rim-rattling dunk.

Kansas led 50-32 at halftime, and stretched the lead to 60-36 in the opening minutes of the second half, allowing Self to start tinkering with lineups the rest of the way.

He won’t have much time to play around with them.

The Jayhawks play Fort Hays State in their final exhibition game next Tuesday, and then open the season against Louisiana Monroe on Nov. 8. But the patsies end in a hurry – after that, the Jayhawks face Duke as part of the Champions Classic in Chicago, and then embark on the rest of a loaded non-conference slate that includes games at Florida and against Georgetown.

All before the start of a rugged Big 12 slate.

FHSU Men’s Soccer Falters at Home

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

No. 18 Fort Hays State University fell, 2-1, to West Texas A&M on Tuesday afternoon in Hays, Kan.

The Tigers drop to 10-3-2 on the year while the Buffs improve to 11-3-1.

FHSU managed just six shots in the game, four of which came in the first half, including Ricardo Yeverino’s 10th goal of the season.  Yeverino had three of the Tigers’ shots, while David Lucio, Diego Cabral and Perry Dicker accounted for the other half.

Fort Hays State took a 1-0 lead just 10:01 into the contest when Daniel Peralta fired a pass from midfield that found Yeverino, who gathered himself on the left half of the box after deking a defender and drilled a shot into the right side of the net.

At half, Fort Hays State led, 1-0.

In the 63rd minute, Eric Gonzalez of West Texas A&M tied the match when his shot from the upper left corner of the box went over goalie Kent Freund’s outstretched hands.  Freund managed to get a fingertip on it, but the ball was already too deep in the net for a save.

The Buffs would take the lead inside the final 10 minutes of regulation.  At 83:26, a cross deflected off an FHSU defender into the lap of Christopher Hutton, who was alone in front of the net.  His shot went past a diving Freund for the lead.

FHSU closes out the regular season this weekend on the road.  The Tigers travel to Southern Nazarene for a 7 p.m. conference matchup on Friday, Nov. 1, before a rematch with West Texas A&M on Sunday, Nov. 3.  Sunday’s match is scheduled for 3 p.m.
