FHSU Women’s Soccer Wins on Senior Night

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

The Fort Hays State University women’s soccer team knocked off Lindenwood, 3-1, in its home finale of the 2013 season.

FHSU (7-7-3, 3-4-3 MIAA) took the first and last shots of the first half, part of its six first half attempts, while LU (8-6-1, 5-2-1 MIAA) tallied seven shots

Haley Davey took aim just 13 seconds into the game, and had two shots in the opening five minutes.

Jamie Babyak’s shot with just 23 seconds to go in the half sailed wide, sending the squads to halftime in a 0-0 tie.

The Tigers would explode in the second half, scoring three goals in the span of ten minutes and out-shooting the Lions, 11-5 in the final frame.

At 61:58, Davey’s cross from the right side missed FHSU’s attackers in the middle, but Talbott found the ball on the left side of the box, gathered herself and fired.  Her shot deflected off the right post into the net.  It was Talbott’s fourth goal of the season.

Soon after, in the 67th minute, Babyak would line up for a free kick from 50 yards out along the right sideline.  Babyak’s pass into the box found Margaret Meier waiting for the header.   It was Meier’s first goal of the season, and Babyak’s second assist of the year.

Just under four minutes later, Babyak would tally a goal of her own.  The junior took another free kick from approximately 45 yards out, in the center of the pitch, and snuck the shot just over goalie Bailey Tracy’s outstretched arms.

Lindenwood’s Danielle Torry would score in the 89th minute, but it was too little, too late for the Lions.

Talbott, the Tigers’ lone senior, was honored at halftime for Senior Night.

With the win, FHSU moved into the No. 6 spot in the MIAA standings with 12 points – one point ahead of Emporia State and Nebraska Kearney.  The Tigers close out the regular season on Sunday with a 7 p.m. match against UNK, in Kearney, Neb.

Five Royals named Gold Glove Finalists

riggertRoyalsRawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc., a subsidiary of Jarden Corportation, announced today that five Kansas City Royals – center fielder Lorenzo Cain, shortstop Alcides Escobar, left fielder Alex Gordon, first baseman Eric Hosmer and catcher  Salvador Perez – have been named 2013 American League Gold Glove Award finalists.  The Royals’ five finalists are second-most in the A.L., behind Baltimore’s six and tied for second-most in the Major Leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Rawlings also announced that award winners will be revealed on Tuesday, October 29 at 7 p.m. CT, during a special edition of “Baseball Tonight/The 2013 Rawlings Gold Glove Award ® Announcement Show”, which will air on ESPN2.  The Rawlings Gold Glove Awards honor the best individual fielding performances at each position in the American League ™ and National League ™, as voted by Major League managers and coaches.

Gordon is attempting to win the award for the third-consecutive year and join Amos Otis (1971, 1973-74) as the only Royals outfielders to win three Rawlings Gold Glove Awards.  The other left field finalists are Yoenis Cespedes (Oakland) and Andy Dirks (Detroit).  Cain, Escobar, Hosmer and Perez are all looking for their first career Gold Gloves.  This marks Hosmer’s second-straight mention as a finalist among American League first basemen.  He is joined by Chris Davis (Baltimore) and James Loney (Tampa Bay).

Cain, in his third season with the Royals, is a finalist for the first time.  He is up for the award with center fielders Jacoby Ellsbury (Boston) and Adam Jones (Baltimore).  Escobar, who also came to Kansas City via trade in 2010, is a finalist for a Rawlings Gold Glove for the first time.  He is joined by shortstops Yunel Escobar (Tampa Bay) and J.J. Hardy (Baltimore).  Perez, who was named an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2013, is a finalist for the first time joining fellow catchers Joe Mauer (Minnesota) and Matt Wieters (Baltimore).

For the first time in its 57-year history, Rawlings added a sabermetric component to the Rawlings Gold Glove Award selection process, as part of its new collaboration with the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).  The SABR Defensive Index comprised of approximately 25 percent of the overall selection total, with the managers and coaches’ vote continuing to carry the majority.

Following the ESPN2 announcement telecast, voting for the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award™ presented by SABR will begin at www.rawlings.com, allowing the general public to weigh in as to who is “The Finest in the Field®” in both the American League and National League.  Fans can only select one player among the 2013 Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners from each League.  A combination of the international fan vote and the SABR Defensive Index will determine who takes home the honor of each League’s top defensive player.  The Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winners will be unveiled during the 2013 Rawlings Gold Glove Award Ceremony presented by Gold Sport Collectibles on Friday, November 8, 2013, at The Plaza Hotel in New York City.

KU Punter nominated for national award

PardulaKansas punter and kickoff specialist Trevor Pardula was named a nominee for the 2013 Ray Guy Award, which recognizes the nation’s top punter. Pardula, a junior from San Jose, Calif., is one of 85 candidates for the award, which is presented by the Augusta (Ga.) Sports Council.

Through six games, Pardula ranks second in the Big 12 and 10th nationally in punting with an average of 44.8 yards per punt. Pardula has placed nine punts inside the 20 and recorded 14 punts of 50 yards or more, including a career-best 78-yard punt against Louisiana Tech. That punt tied for eighth-longest in school history and helped catapult Pardula to a KU single game record 57.6 yards on five punts in the win.

A 6-foot-5, junior college transfer from De Anza College, Pardula has consistently helped Kansas in the field position battle and punted 10 times in the Jayhawks’ game against TCU. Against the Horned Frogs Pardula averaged 46.2 yards per punt, including five punts of 50 yards or longer.

Pardula also serves as the Jayhawks’ kickoff specialist and has 16 touchbacks, more than the entire total from last season, in 25 attempts.

The Ray Guy Award list will be narrowed to ten semi-finalists to be announced on November 8. Following the semi-finalists announcement, a national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, coaches, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will vote for the top three finalists, who will be identified on November 25. The voting body will then cast ballots to select the winner.

The presentation of the Ray Guy Award will be featured on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on Thursday, December 12 at 7:30 pm ET on ESPN. The show, hosted by ESPN’s Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard will feature live presentation of nine player awards, along with the recipients of Disney’s Spirit Award, The Home Depot Coach of the Year Award, the NCFAA (National College Football Awards Association) Contributions to College Football Award, and student-athletes selected to the Walter Camp All-America Team.

No. 17 FHSU Men’s Soccer Plays No. 25 NSU to Draw

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

No. 17 Fort Hays State University drew, 0-0, with No. 25 Northeastern State in Hays, Kan.  Thursday’s contest was a rematch of a tie earlier this season.

Ranked No. 2 in the Central Region, the Tigers (9-2-2, 4-1-2 MIAA) struggled to find rhythm on offense for much of the game, but strong defensive play fought off 12 shots by NSU (7-2-4, 4-1-2 MIAA).  The RiverHawks are No. 3 in the Central Region.

After firing just one shot in the first half, FHSU nearly broke the stalemate in the 58th minute. Michael Cole passed the ball into a cluttered box, finding Daniel Peralta, who nearly put it past a diving Eric Shephard.

In the first overtime, both squads took two shots, though none were on goal.  Fort Hays State would take the only shot in the second overtime period – an attempt by Tanner Brock that went wide right.

Kent Freund played the entire 110 minutes, saving three shots.

FHSU hosts Harding on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day, where Ricardo Yeverino and Peralta will be honored prior the game.

Lady Tigers Fourth in MIAA Preseason Polls

https://www.horizonappliance.com/
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The two teams who battled it out in the conference tournament championship last season each earned a first place spot in this year’s polls. Emporia State, who won the tournament championship last season, earned eight first place votes and sits atop the coaches poll. Central Missouri, who played ESU in the championship game, earned 13 first place votes from the media to sit atop that poll.

Washburn, who won the regular season conference championship, got one first place vote from the coaches and six from the media as they are picked to finish third in both polls. Fort Hays State is picked to finish fourth in both polls with one first place vote from the media as Pittsburg State is prognosticated to come in fifth. Northeastern State earned the sixth place spot in both polls after making it to Kansas City last season.

Both polls continued to remain the same as Northwest Missouri is picked seventh in the each poll and Missouri Western is picked to finish eighth. Missouri Southern holds onto the ninth spot in both polls as Southwest Baptist was picked 10th in each poll. Central Oklahoma earned the #11 spot in both polls.

Lincoln holds the 12th spot for both the coaches and the media entering the 2013-14 campaign. The final twist comes in the 13th and 14th spots as the coaches picked Lindenwood 13th and Nebraska-Kearney 14th and the media flip flopped those two slots.

The MIAA slate of game is scheduled to get underway for many teams around the league on December 5, 2013.

The Fort Hays State University men’s soccer team debuted at No. 2 in the Central Region Rankings, released Wednesday (Oct. 23) by the NCAA.

Conference foes Lindenwood and Northeastern State sandwich FHSU at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively, while Upper Iowa ranked fourth.

The Tigers (9-2-1, 4-1-1 MIAA) dropped a 4-3 contest to Lindenwood on the road in the teams’ only meeting this season, but defeated Upper Iowa, 2-1, last weekend at home.

FHSU and NSU drew 2-2 in Tahlequah, Okla., earlier this season and will play again Thursday (Oct. 24) at 7 p.m. in Hays, Kan.

Three of the top four teams in the Central Region are nationally ranked.  Lindenwood is fifth, while the Tigers and NSU are 17th and 25th, respectively.
