Tiger Volleyball Team Sweeps Friends University

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

Fort Hays State pushed its win streak to four games with a sweep of Friends University in Monday’s doubleheader.  The Tigers took Game 1, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) and Game 2, 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23).

FHSU (10-12, 1-7 MIAA) inched closer to the .500 mark with the victories, while Friends dropped to 19-8 (10-1 KCAC).

In the first match, The Tigers were led by Haley Corkill (12 kills, 13 digs) and Camille Hubert (12 kills, 12 digs).  Tara Hoekman was close behind with nine kills.

Kelsey Broadwell (21 assists) and Raegan Vanderplas (17 assists) split time in the setter role while Rebekah Spainhour, Hoekman, Rachel Szczepanski and Lacie Shoemaker all had block assists in the match.

Tied at 15-all in the first set, FHSU would jump ahead 19-16, but Friends would not falter, tying the match at 19 and 21 before the Tigers took control, winning the set point on a Szczepanski kill.

In the second set, the Tigers would lead by as many as five before Friends tied the match, 15-15.  After a timeout, however, FHSU would regain composure and cruise, closing the game on a 10-3 run to take the set, 25-18.

FHSU would again fall behind to start the third frame before rattling off four unanswered to lead, 5-3.  Later in the decisive set, tied 15-15, the Tigers burst out on a 5-0 run, pulling ahead for good.  FHSU won the set, and match, 25-21.

In the second contest of the night, FHSU’s Madison Schwartz and Taylor Mares led the way with 15 kills.  Mares’ .421 hitting percentage was a team high.

Vanderplas (26 assists) and Broadwell (20 assists) once again sparked the Tigers. Jenna Ulrich continued her torrid pace as a blocker, knocking down six attacks (one solo block) on the night.

Makenzie Weinman’s defense played a crucial role in the four-set win as she dug out 34 attacks, 22 more than the nearest Tiger (Schwartz).

Despite leading by as many as six (12-6) in the first set, FHSU would falter, 25-21 to fall behind in the match, 0-1.

The second set started slow for the Tigers as Friends jumped out to a 7-1 lead before FHSU slowly crawled back into contention.  Down 7-11, FHSU sprung off four straight points to tie.  Those four unanswered points were part of a larger 6-1 run that gave the Fort Hays State a 13-12 lead.  Tied at 15-all, FHSU broke out on a 5-1 run to grab the lead for good.  The Tigers would take advantage of three straight errors by the Falcons to take the set, 25-22.

Out of intermission, FHSU led until 11-11, when the two squads would start back-and-forth play that brought them to a 23-23.  At that point, Mares and Schwartz capitalized with kills to put the set away, 25-23.

The final set of the night proved to be another battle for the Tigers, as both teams played back-and-forth throughout.  FHSU would lead by as many as three and trail by as many as two, until 23-22.  Mares’ 14th and 15th kills of the night sandwiched a Falcon kill to give FHSU the match, 25-23.

Fort Hays State continues its home stand this weekend with conference matches against Missouri Southern on Friday, Oct. 25 and Southwest Baptist on Saturday, Oct. 26.  Friday’s action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

FHSU’s Terry Named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week

https://www.horizonappliance.com/
Fort Hays State junior linebacker Michael Terry was named the MIAA Football Defensive Athlete of the Week on Mondayfor his efforts in the 56-14 win over Southwest Baptist this past Saturday. Terry helped the Tigers move to 3-4 overall on the season and extend their win streak to three games.

Terry had a career-high 16 tackles for the Tigers and a 94-yard fumble return that set up a touchdown for the Tigers. With the score 21-7 in favor of FHSU early in the third quarter, Terry scooped a fumble by SBU in the endzone and nearly returned it the length of the field for a touchdown, but was tripped up just six yards short. It came at the end of a goal-line stand by FHSU, which held SBU out of the endzone for three straight plays with the ball on the 1-yardline. His return set up a touchdown that pushed the FHSU lead to 28-7. Terry had nine of his 16 tackles by halftime, helping hold SBU to just 124 yards of total offense in the opening half.

Chiefs Hold Off Texans, Move to 7-0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Jamaal Charles carried the Kansas City Chiefs to another victory.Chiefs

His defense helped shoulder the load once again.

Charles ran for 86 yards and a touchdown, Alex Smith also ran for a score and the scrappy Chiefs held off the banged-up Houston Texans 17-16 on Sunday to remain unbeaten.

The Chiefs were forced to punt the ball to Houston with 1:46 left in the game.

But after Case Keenum threw an incompletion on first down, the young quarterback was stripped by linebacker Tamba Hali at his 2. Derrick Johnson recovered the fumble for the Chiefs.

Smith simply kneeled on it from there as time ran out, allowing Kansas City (7-0) to extend the second-best start in franchise history. The 2003 team began the season 9-0.

Meanwhile, the Texans are riding their first five-game skid since Nov. 6-Dec. 11, 2005.

Keenum, making his first NFL start in place of the injured Matt Schaub, threw for 271 yards and a touchdown for the Texans (2-5).

But he didn’t get much help from his run game after Arian Foster left in the first quarter with a hamstring injury and did not return.

Ben Tate, who also briefly left with an injury, had just 50 yards rushing for Houston.

The Chiefs’ defense, which led the NFL in scoring coming into the game, continually made big plays.

They held the Texans to a field goal after facing first-and-goal at the 1-yard line in the third quarter, and then kept turning Houston back on every series in the fourth quarter.

Charles finished with 123 yards from scrimmage, joining O.J. Simpson as the only players in NFL history with at least 100 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown in the first seven games of a season. Simpson did it in the first nine games of the 1975 season.

The Texans opened the scoring on Randy Bullock’s 48-yard field goal, but the drive proved costly when Foster left for the locker room. When he emerged a short while later, he was wearing a gray sweatsuit and his afternoon was done.

The Chiefs answered with an 82-yard drive that was helped along by a roughing-the-passer penalty on Texans defensive end Jared Crick. Charles did most of the work on the drive, so it was only fitting that he plunged in from a yard to give Kansas City a 7-3 lead.

Keenum, clearly unperturbed by the crowd inside Arrowhead Stadium, calmly guided Houston back into the lead. He hit DeVier Posey for a 42-yard reception, and then found DeAndre Hopkins — who had run right past cornerback Sean Smith — for a 29-yard touchdown reception.

The Texans still led 10-7 when they pinned Kansas City at its 3-yard line midway through the second quarter. Smith proceeded to guide the Chiefs 97 yards in 15 plays — he was 8 of 8 for 75 yards on the drive — and used all but 56 seconds on the clock to regain the lead.

Smith scored on a 5-yard draw when he froze the defense on a fake handoff to nobody.

Bullock tacked on two more field goals for Houston, and Ryan Succop hit one for the Chiefs, who came within inches of extending their 17-16 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Tight end Anthony Fasano caught a pass at the goal line and was ruled down, and Chiefs coach Andy Reid challenged the spot to no avail — he thought it was a touchdown.

Charles was stuffed on the next play, and Smith’s pass to wide open Sean McGrath on fourth down was out of bounds.

It turned out that it didn’t matter. The Chiefs’ defense made sure of that.

FHSU Women’s Soccer Rolls in 4-0 Victory Over Northwest Missouri State

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

Fort Hays State University’s offense exploded for four goals in the shutout conference victory over Northwest Missouri State on Sunday.

The Tigers (6-7-3, 2-4-3 MIAA) fired 16 shots in the contest, putting half of them on goal to overpower the Bearcat (4-8-2, 2-5-1 MIAA) defense and clinch their second conference win of the season.

Hannah Smith got things going early in the contest, as Amanda Talbott took a corner kick and crossed the ball into the box for Smith, whose header at 1:43 was her first goal of the season.

Just after halftime (50:31), Hannay Jurgens would get on the board for the Tigers.  Jurgens took a pass from Hailey Davey into a one-on-one situation, where she put it past goalie Kelsey Adams for the Tigers’ second goal of the day.

Soon after, in the 54th minute, Kylee Loneker scored her first of two goals on the day.  Smith’s pass to Loneker put her in the Tigers’ second one-on-one situation of the day, and Loneker executed perfectly.  Smith pushed her point total to three for the day with the assist, her first of the season.

Nearing the end of regulation, at 81:48, Loneker’s second goal of the day gave a potent offense attack another reason to smile, scoring off of Cenadya Guzman’s first assist of the year.

Goalie Kelsey Grey, starting her second consecutive game, posted a shutout with seven saves in 90 minutes of action.

Fort Hays State closes out the home portion of its 2013 schedule on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m., in a conference matchup against first-place Lindenwood.
