Chiefs Beat Raiders To Remain Unbeaten

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs finally got the best of the Oakland Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium.

Jamaal Charles ran for two touchdowns, the Kansas City defense harassed Terrelle Pryor into throwing three second-half interceptions and the Chiefs remained unbeaten with a 24-7 victory Sunday.

After winning just twice last year, Kansas City (6-0) pressed on with the second-best start in franchise history. The Chiefs won their first nine games during the 2003 season.

The Chiefs piled up 10 sacks while ending a three-game skid to the Raiders (2-4), and a six-game losing streak to them at Arrowhead Stadium. They also held Darren McFadden to 52 yards rushing.

Pryor threw for 216 yards and a touchdown, but his interceptions proved costly.

The first led to Charles’ go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter, and the second led to Ryan Succop’s 33-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter. Husain Abdullah returned the final interception 44 yards for a touchdown with 1:35 left in the game.

Chiefs fans were hoping to break the record for loudest outdoor sports stadium, set earlier this year by the Seahawks.

And while it wasn’t clear whether they hit 136.7 decibels — roughly the sound of a jet engine — they certainly made their presence known.

Pryor and his patchwork offensive line struggled to deal with the crowd noise, especially in the second half.

On one possession, Pryor was twice whistled for delay of game partly because third-string center Mike Brisiel couldn’t hear him. Oakland also had a false start on the same drive.

The Raiders finished with 11 penalties for 68 yards.

Oakland actually struck first in the second quarter when Denarius Moore beat Chiefs defensive back Marcus Cooper, starting in place of the injured Brandon Flowers, on a quick slant over the middle. Moore caught the pass from Pryor in stride and went 39 yards for the touchdown.

It remained 7-0 until the waning minutes of the first half, when the Chiefs took over at the Oakland 45. Pass interference on the Raiders’ D.J. Hayden on third-and-10 kept the drive alive, and Charles squirmed the 7 yards for the tying score with 1:06 left.

The Chiefs were poised to take the lead early in the third quarter, but Hayden stripped Charles of the ball inside the Oakland 10 and Charles Woodson recovered it.

But the Raiders gave it right back when Kansas City brought a blitz and Pryor lobbed a pass off his back foot that Quintin Demps picked off.

Five plays later, Charles plunged into the end zone to give the Chiefs a 14-7 lead. The way their defense was playing, that proved to be enough. Kansas City kept up the heat on Pryor the rest of the way — on one drive, two penalties and two sacks left the Raiders facing fourth-and-48 at their 12. Not even their punt made it to the first down marker.

Cooper’s interception set up Succop’s field goal with 2 minutes left to put the game out of reach, and Abdullah’s pick-6 left the crowd packed inside Arrowhead Stadium rocking at the end.

FHSU Women’s Soccer Comes Up Short at Home

https://www.horizonappliance.com/
The Fort Hays State University women’s soccer team fell short in a 1-0 loss to Northeastern State on Sunday in Hays, Kan.

The Tigers (5-7-2, 1-4-2 MIAA) mustered just two shots in the opening period, and though they finished with eight attempts, couldn’t slow down an NSU (10-2, 4-2 MIAA) offense that launched 14 total shots.

Amanda Talbott and and Ceynada Guzman each had two shots for FHSU.  Both of Talbott’s attempts were on goal, while Guzman had one shot on goal. Hannah Jurgens and Sabrina Van Horn also had shots on goal for the Tigers.

Nicole Barnaba played the entire game in the net, allowing one goal while saving six attempts.

The RiverHawks broke a 0-0 stalemate near the midway point of the first half, as Jennifer Clark retrieved a long pass from Lindsey Latta and chipped a shot over Barnaba’s head.

FHSU will hit the road next weekend for matches at Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

FHSU Men’s Cross County Third at Own Meet

horizonappliancegenSPORTS

The Fort Hays State men’s cross country team placed third at its home meet on Saturday (Oct. 12) at Sand Plum Nature Trail, just outside Victoria, Kan. The Tigers finished behind perennial Division II powerhouse Adams State, which won the team competition with 33 points, and Nebraska-Kearney, which had 76 points. The Tigers had 106 points.

Cory Keehn was the top individual finisher for FHSU in 11th overall among the 226-runner field. He finished the 8K course in 24:47. He was 28 seconds off the winning pace of 24:19 by Naseem Haje of Adams State. With three unattached runners in the top 10, Keehn’s finish was worth eight team points.

Isaac MIlls and Jonny Bernasky kept the Tigers in the hunt among the top three teams, finishing in 16th and 17th respectively. Mills crossed the line in 24:52 and Bernasky in 24:57. Their finishes were worth 12 and 13 team points. Nathan Purdue finished 26th overall and added 22 team points to the FHSU total by finishing in 25:13.

What kept the Tigers from battling for second was not having a fifth runner packed with their top four. There was a gap of 29 team points between the Tigers’ fourth and fifth runners, while Nebraska-Kearney had just a four-point gap between those runners and their highest team-point scorer posted 24 points compared to 51 for FHSU, which was nearly right on the margin of points between the teams for second and third. Ryan Hopkins rounded out the scorers for FHSU in 59th overall, running 25:51.

Nolan Zimmer was the top MIAA finisher in the race from Northwest Missouri State in third overall. He finished in 24:22. Kevin Carder of Nebraska-Kearney was right behind in 24:26, fourth overall. The MIAA Championships are in two weeks in Pittsburg, Kan. as the Tigers look to defend their conference title from 2012.

The Frogs stretched their lead to 24-10 with 53-yard drive to B.J. Catalon’s 2-yard touchdown run.
