Kansas State to Unveil New Bill Snyder Statue

KSU-Snyder

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Kansas State is preparing to unveil a new statue of head football coach Bill Snyder at the school’s newly renovated stadium.

Artist Spencer Schubert created the 8-feet-tall bronze sculpture. The sculpture was installed Wednesday on a granite pedestal and will be dedicated Friday.

It’s designed to highlight Synder’s dignified sideline demeanor, along with his leadership and decisiveness.

Schubert also has created busts of Buck O’Neil, Dred Scott and Rush Limbaugh for the Missouri Statehouse.

A whirlwind $75 million upgrade to the Bill Snyder Family Stadium wrapped up last week. Construction had to be squeezed into eight months to be ready for the Wildcats’ opener Friday night against North Dakota State.

All Jayhawk League Selections Announced

Larks LogoAfter winning the Jayhawk League with a 23-10 record and finishing 35-13 overall the Hays Larks had seven First-team All Jayhawk League selections.

Clayton Garland was named the league’s Most Valuable Player and Chandler Hawkins was named the Most Outstanding Pitcher.

Garland, a Senior at Fort Hays State, finished the season hitting .352 with 5 home runs, 38 RBI’s and 29 runs scored.

Hawkins was 7-2 on the summer with a 2.11 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 64 innings. Hawkins allowed just 18 runs, 15 of those were earned and he walked just 19 batters.

Hawkins and Nick Goza were both First-team starting pitcher selections and relief pitcher David Owen was also a First-team pick. Garland and Aaron Cornell were both First-team outfield selections. Tyler Gilmore was a First-team selection at third base and Jake Placzek was a First-team utility player selection.

Catcher Taylor Peterson, second basemen Zair Koeiman and relief pitcher Ian Bentley was all selected to the Second-team.

Waters to Start at QB for K-State in Opener

Screen Shot 2013-08-27 at 6.43.01 AM(AP) – Jake Waters will be under center when defending Big 12 champion Kansas State opens its season Friday night against defending FCS national champion North Dakota State.

Wildcats coach Bill Snyder said on the Big 12’s media teleconference Monday the junior college transfer was more consistent throughout fall camp than Daniel Sams, who backed up departed Heisman Trophy finalist Collin Klein last season.

Snyder did say that both quarterbacks will play against the Bison.

Waters is considered the more polished passer after throwing for more than 3,500 yards, 39 touchdowns and only three interceptions for Iowa Western Community College last season.

Sams is considered the better runner. He had 235 yards and three touchdowns on the ground while playing in parts of eight games last year.

Chiefs Tight End Moeaki Fractures Shoulder

Chiefs-MoeakiKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have lost injury-prone tight end Tony Moeaki, who fractured one of his shoulders in Saturday night’s preseason victory over Pittsburgh.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday that Moeaki was undergoing further exams on the shoulder and did not say when the tight end would return. The Chiefs play their last preseason game Thursday night against Green Bay before making final roster cuts by Saturday.

It was unclear exactly when Moeaki got hurt, but Reid said it occurred late in the Steelers game. Moeaki was hit near the shoulder and then tackled to the ground on it.

The Chiefs were already banged up at tight end with rookie Travis Kelce dealing with a bruised knee. Reid said Kelce could be back in practice this week.

Smith Center’s Wilson Among Chiefs Cuts

Chiefs-FB- HelmetKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs cut quarterback Ricky Stanzi, sixth-round draft pick Braden Wilson and a dozen other players Sunday night as they prepared to reach the 75-man limit by Tuesday.

The Chiefs were left with 76 players on the roster.

Stanzi was beaten out for the No. 3 quarterback job by undrafted free agent Tyler Bray. He was joined by wide receiver Terrance Copper and defensive back Neiko Thorpe in players who were part of last year’s 2-14 team that were involved in the first round of cuts.

Also cut Sunday were cornerbacks Vince Agnew, Otha Foster III, Kamaal McIlwain; offensive linemen Ryan Durand, A.J. Hawkins and Hutch Eckerson; defensive ends Miguel Chavis and Rob Lohr; running back Jordan Roberts and wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker.

The 50,400-square-foot facility on the site of the former football practice field between Lewis Field and Big Creek will serve as an indoor practice venue for multiple Tiger sports teams.

The facility has a 65-yard, artificial-turf practice field; batting cages; a 70-yard, three-lane synthetic track with jump pits; a 5,000 square-foot state of the art weight room; and a team meeting room.

The total cost of the project was about $4.2 million and was made possible by major gifts from the families of Bob and Pat Schmidt and Don and Chris Bickle and by the generosity of many other donors. The Schmidts and Bickles both donated $1 million each to launch the project.

Hays Indians Scrimmage on Saturday

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

The Hays High Indians closed down the first week of preseason work outs with a short scrimmage on Saturday morning at Lewis Field Stadium.  The controlled scrimmage featured each the first, second and third teams taking 20-25 plays each before the first team finished the morning with an additional turn.

It was only the third day of pads for the Indians who still are looking to solidify some starting positions.  The scrimmage on Saturday focused mostly on the offensive side of the ball before Lane Clark drilled a 51 yard field goal to end the short session.

KSU Stadium Renovation Completed

west-stadium-center-300x200MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Whirlwind work on a $75 million renovation to Bill Snyder Family Stadium that began following last season has been completed ahead of Kansas State’s season opener August 30.

Project supervisor AECOM announced Thursday that the project to renovate the west side of the 45 year old stadium finished on schedule. The construction had to be finished in just eight months in order to be ready for the Wildcats’ opener against North Dakota State.

The renovation resulted in new premium seating, improved media and broadcast facilities, the addition of the K-State Athletics Hall of Honor and other amenities. It also doubled the amount of field lighting to meet NCAA national standards for high definition TV broadcasts.

The project was funded entirely through private donations.

Big 12 and Liberty Bowl announce plans

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – The Liberty Bowl has reached a six-year deal with the Big 12 that will take effect in the 2014 season.Screen Shot 2013-08-23 at 3.38.18 PM

Under the agreement announced Friday, the Liberty Bowl will match a Big 12 team against a representative from the Southeastern Conference. In a release announcing the deal, Liberty Bowl officials say they will have the fourth selection of Big 12 teams after that league’s college football playoff representatives have been chosen.

The Liberty Bowl currently matches the Conference USA champion against an SEC representative, assuming the SEC has enough bowl-eligible teams to fill its Liberty partnership. The bowl’s contract with Conference USA expires after this season.

Tiger Offense Struggles in Second Scrimmage

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

The Fort Hays State football team held their second scrimmage of their preseason Thursday afternoon and the offense struggled, scoring on only two possessions.

Quarterback Treveon Albert broke a couple of long runs but struggled to connect down field.

Chris Brown Press Conference

Head coach Chris Brown mixed and matches personal, giving some younger players a look with the No. 1 offense and didn’t have some of their projected starters on the field after their first series against the No. 1 defense.

The Tigers continue to look for a replacement for starting right guard Matt Erbert who was lost for the season with an knee injury suffered in their first scrimmage this past Sunday. True freshman Trevor Shankle has been taking the snaps since Erbert went down.

Defensive end Basil Bandy continues to have a good camp, tipping a pass that was intercepted by Jalen Hill. The defensive line batted down three passes on the day.

The Tigers get Friday off before returning to the practice field Saturday morning. They are two weeks away from their season opener against Emporia State September 5th.

New-Look Chiefs Still Learning to Communicate

Chiefs-PracticeKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Alex Smith might as well have been playing Paul Newman’s part from the seminal 1967 film “Cool Hand Luke” after the Kansas City Chiefs struggled in a preseason loss to San Francisco.

You know the line where Newman says, “What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate.”

Smith and his wide receivers weren’t on the same page. The offensive line might just as well have been speaking another language given the seven sacks they allowed. The entire unit never put together a sustained drive, the Chiefs’ lone touchdown coming on special teams.

Coach Andy Reid says that the communication issues remain a work in progress. The next benchmark to judge that progress comes in preseason game No. 3 on Saturday night in Pittsburgh.
