Kanza Bowl Cancels 2013 Game

MIAA-LOGOThe MIAA has been informed that there will be no Kanza Bowl football game in 2013. Since 2009, an MIAA team has played a team from the Lone Star Conference in this Division II post-season game.

“We are disappointed to receive this news,” stated MIAA Commissioner, Dr. Bob Boerigter. “The Kanza Bowl Committee had done a great job of providing an educational, competitive and enjoyable experience for our student-athletes and participating institutions. We are very grateful for the efforts that the Kanza Bowl Committee has put into past events and thank them for helping to create some fine memories for our student-athletes and fans.”

The MIAA remains under contract to provide a team to participate in the historic Mineral Water Bowl where they annually face an opponent from the Northern Sun Conference.  The Mineral Water Bowl game is scheduled for December 8, 2013 in Excelsior Springs, Mo.

Chiefs Wednesday Roster Moves & Comments

he Kansas City Chiefs announced on Wednesday that the club has signed cornerback Kennard Cox. Additionally, the team has waived linebacker Chad Kilgore.Screen Shot 2013-08-14 at 5.00.46 PM

Cox (6-0, 191) has seen action in 29 games in four NFL seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2008-09) and Seattle Seahawks (2010-11). He owns 10 tackles (five solo), 0.5 sacks, two passes defensed and one fumble recovery. Cox originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft selection (251st overall) of the Buffalo Bills in 2008, but was released before the season and added to the Green Bay Packers practice squad roster on Oct. 27, 2008. He was claimed off the Packers practice squad by the Jaguars in December of 2008 where he spent two seasons on and off the club’s active roster. In April of 2010, Cox joined the Seattle Seahawks where he primarily served on the club’s practice squad until March 13, 2012. The Miami, Fla., native played collegiately at Pittsburgh where he appeared in 47 games, totaling 98 tackles and two interceptions. He prepped at Miami Killian High School where he played wide receiver and quarterback.

Kilgore (6-1, 230) originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Oakland Raiders in 2012. He spent the 2012 training camp with the Raiders before being released prior to the regular season. The Orrick, Mo., native played in 57 games at Northwest Missouri State, recording 392 tackles (165 solo), 7.0 sacks (-36.0 yards), five interceptions, 12 passes defensed and three forced fumbles. He prepped at Excelsior Springs High School in Excelsior Springs, Mo.

The Kansas City Chiefs were hard at work again on Wednesday as they look forward to the end of training camp tomorrow. Below you will see quotes from Head Coach Andy Reid. Every Chiefs game will be heard on 96.9 KFIX.

Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid

OPENING STATEMENT: “Alright, really Jamaal Charles is the only one that we’ll probably need to talk about. He’s getting better. He worked out today doing position play work. He’s just not quite there yet. He is making progress and feeling a lot better. If push comes to shove, he probably could have gone today, but we kept him out. We’ll see how he does in the next couple of days. I haven’t determined anything about whether he’ll play or not play. We’ll take it day by day. If he can play, he’ll play, if he can’t play, then he won’t. We finished up today with a 10-10-10 practice. So we got some good situational work. Still one’s versus one’s, two’s versus two’s, three’s versus three’s. We picked out specific things for them to work on. I thought it was a good day.”

Q: Now that you have finished with the St. Joe portion of camp, are you happy with what you were able to get done?

REID: “I appreciate the attitude of the players, how they came to work. They did it every day and they were tested. I thought they stepped up and maintained their focus. We got a lot of plays in and that will be important down the road here. We were able to accomplish quite a bit here. “

Q: Did you have to adjust to some of the things you thought you wanted to do coming into camp based off of what you’ve done in the past?

REID: “As far as the facility?”

Q: No, what you wanted to do with the team.

REID: “No. We were able to load them up and do what we needed to do. We kept the practices in the morning. The on-field practice in the morning and we did the walk through inside. I thought everything was really productive.”

Q: It’s just a preseason game, but it’s going to be pretty interesting for Alex. Is he the kind of guy that can handle that maybe better than most people?

REID: “I think he’ll handle it. He’s going to know a lot of people obviously, so there will be that part of it. Guys that he hasn’t seen in a few months. Once it’s all said and done it’s playing the game. I think he’ll handle that fine.”

Q: What about the starters? How much do you think they’ll play?

REID: “I’ll go one more time with the coaches, but there will be an increase with the ones. How long? I couldn’t tell you that today. I’ll get it to you tomorrow. “

Q: Akeem Jordan was out?

REID: “Right. He had a personal matter he had to take care of.”

Q: Expect him back tomorrow?

REID: “Yeah, he’ll be back tomorrow.”

Q: We’ve seen Dwayne Bowe through camp, three weeks up here.

REID: “He came back in good shape and he hasn’t missed a day. He’s worked his tail off. He’s a good player and I think we all know that. He’s continued to work aggressively every day.”

Q: Are you satisfied with what you’ve seen in Jon Baldwin?

REID: “Jon’s worked his tail off. I’ve been pleased with him. He comes in every day and he wants to get better. So from a coaching stand point, you can’t ask for more than that.”

Q: Are you going to continue training camp back in Kansas City?

REID: “We will get into our in-season schedule. We will feel out how that goes. It’s still training camp, with training camp rules. The actual schedule will change up just a little bit.”

Q: Will practices be similar to what you were doing out here before today?

REID: “They will be in pads and be hitting. There won’t be the same live periods that we had here. Those are done. “

Q: Will you work off cards next week?

REID: “There were no cards.”

Q: Overall are you pretty happy with an uneventful camp aside from the Jamaal Charles injury? You’ve really avoided a lot of distractions up here. Is that nice?

REID: “It helps with the university and the setup here. They have been phenomenal. The people here, I can’t say anything but good things. From the guys that take care of the field, these fields are incredible, to the food. The food is unbelievable. The people who take care of the rooms for the players, they’re clean, they make your bed, they do everything for you. It’s quite a setup. They bend over backwards for us. Whatever we needed we were able to get. With that, I think the players can focus in on their job and it eliminates some of the things you get into with other distractions. I think it starts with the university here. What a great setup here. I’m happy with the setup here. I look at this school and it’s an incredible situation for us.”

FH-MSC-BrockThe Fort Hays State men’s soccer team enters the 2013 season ranked 23rd in NCAA Division II. The NSCAA released its preseason national rankings on Tuesday (Aug. 13) and the Tigers are one of three MIAA schools referenced.

Fort Hays State is coming off an 11-6-2 record in 2012. Fort Hays State grabbed an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament, its first-ever national tournament appearance in just the program’s second year of existence. The Tigers fell in the Super Region semifinals to conference foe Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla. Northeastern State begins the year No. 14 in the nation and Lindenwood, also a member of the MIAA, opens at No. 18.

Throw in one of the region’s elite goal scorers from 2011, Ricardo Yeverino, who sat out the 2012 season, and the Tigers look poised for another solid season in 2013.

The Tigers jumped in the national rankings for the first time in school history last year in early September, then climbed as high as No. 9 in the regular season. Fort Hays State begins the 2013 season where it was ranked in the final poll of 2012, at No. 23.

Chiefs Training Camp Quotes: 8/13

he Kansas City Chiefs continued work today with training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri without running back Jamaal Charles. Quarterback Alex Smith had a Chiefschance to comment, after practice Tuesday, about the absence of Charles and more

QB ALEX SMITH

Q: It looks like you’re going to be without Jamaal (Charles) for a short time. What’s this offense going to look like without him?

SMITH: “He’s a special player. That’s kind of stating the obvious. The next guy has to step up. We have to step up as an offense, and I will kind of pick it up. That’s the nature of this game and that’s why there’s 53 men on the roster. That’s what the good teams do. But no question that he will be missed.”

Q: Can you be as efficient with Knile Davis in there as you were with Jamaal?

SMITH: “We better. Jamaal is a special player but we’ll have to find a way.”

Q: What happened in that play earlier in practice today where you turned to hand off and no one was there?

SMITH: “Just a little miscommunication. We’re mixing up the tempo and doing some things and it was just a miscommunication with the back.”

Q: Did he not hear the play call?

SMITH: “Yeah, he thought he heard something different.”

Q: What kind of event will this be for you going against the 49ers?

SMITH: “A little different. I’m playing my old team and against guys that I’ve played with for a while now but it’s a preseason game. It’s just another step. The focus is on Jacksonville for us. That’s what it’s always been and this is just another step as we work towards that. We’re still in camp mode and still working. It’s another preseason game and then again it’s not.”

Q: You were quoted in the New York Times that you wanted to stick it to those who doubted you. I assume that you feel like the 49ers were among the people who doubted you?

SMITH: “No, it was not directed at them at all. I think just in general. Over the years some of the things you go through, doubters and things like that, it builds up. Those guys gave me an opportunity. They have given me a couple of opportunities over the years there, Coach (Jim) Harbaugh and that crew, especially over the last couple of years. Obviously, we disagreed with what happened last year, but you move on from it. So, no, that was not solely directed to them at all.”

Q: Andy Reid and Coach Doug Pederson both described you as an even tempered kind of guy and that you don’t get too riled up about stuff like this. Have you felt like you had to dial yourself back a little bit this week just to keep those emotions in check?

SMITH: “I think the biggest thing is that we’re still in camp mode and still installing. The other thing is that regardless that I used to play there, they are a good defensive unit. It will be a good test for us. They are a really good defensive unit. Not many weaknesses on that side of the ball, so it will be a good test for us.”

Q: So when you’re looking across the line of scrimmage, who are you looking for?

SMITH: “At that point you’re playing the game. You’re trying to execute plays and make good decisions out there and execute the offense.”

Q: But you won’t be wearing the yellow jersey this time. That has to be a little strange going against those guys, right?

SMITH: “Yeah, it’s another preseason game. I didn’t have one on last Friday, so it won’t be any different.”

Q: Talk about your anticipation of wearing a Chiefs uniform for the first time inside Arrowhead Stadium.

SMITH: “I’m looking forward to it. I haven’t had the opportunity to get out there. I mean we practice right by it with the facility, but it will be a first time for me getting in it as a member of this organization. I’m really excited. I’m excited about the whole atmosphere.”

Q: Brandon Flowers is a pretty decent player. Can you talk about how he got you today?

SMITH: “Yeah he’s a good player.”

Q: When you see him across here, what do you rate him? What makes him so effective?

SMITH: “He and Sean (Smith) are both really good players. It’s tough when you’re quarterback. You’re looking at matchups and then you look over and you have two really good guys on the upside of the ball. It makes it tough. They’re a great test every day. It makes us better. He (Flowers) definitely got the best of me today on that one. He’s played a long time and played a lot of football, so not only does he have the ability but he understands concepts and route recognizing and then he can take some chances. It’s tough.”

Q: A lot of times when people look at quarterbacks, they don’t take into account the ball handling aspect of what you do. When did it become known to you this is an important thing that you can gain time or gain seconds or gain an advantage?

SMITH: “Are you talking about the ball handling with the backs?”

Q: Yeah, the play action handoffs, the tucking the ball back.

SMITH: “The ball handling and the run game, it is our job. It’s not necessarily what we get known for or get recognized for, but obviously, it is a part of our job. No question, I think that the better you are, especially in the play action pass, the naked game, the better you are in that the more it looks your run game. You’re only helping yourself, and it’s kind of a no brainer. I think it’s one of those things that you learn as you go along. As you get older, you can start working on the little things that you craft. As a young player you don’t pay as much attention, but as you get older really try to make them look alike.”

Q: When you started to pay attention to it, were there any quarterbacks that you watched to try and gain a little knowledge?

SMITH: “Well yeah, you see the good ones, and they’re all pretty good in the play action pass. The guy in Denver is pretty good. Peyton (Manning) is pretty good. He’s been good at it a long time. The guy up in New England is in it as well. He’s probably one of the best. You look at those guys. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that they pay attention to the little things. They’ve been playing at a high level for a long time.”

FHSU Volleyball Picked 7th by Coaches

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

FH-VB-Team CelebrationFort Hays State volleyball was picked seventh in the MIAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Tuesday (Aug. 13). The Tigers are slotted right where they finished in conference play in 2012, coming off a 23-14 overall season in 2012. Last year marked the first 20-win season for FHSU since the 2004 season.

Fort Hays State looks to continue its rise in the conference standings seeing steady improvement in head coach Kurt Kohler‘s first four seasons. Seven conference wins in 2012 marked a new high for the program since joining the extremely difficult MIAA in 2006. The Tigers look to chase down the three top dogs in the conference, Nebraska-Kearney, Washburn, and Central Missouri, which entered the NCAA Tournament last year all in the top five of the national rankings. The MIAA lost one strong program in Truman, a nationally ranked program that moved to the Great Lakes Valley Conference starting this year.

The 2012 MIAA Champion and Central Regional finalist Nebraska-Kearney is picked No. 1 in the poll with 118 points and eight first-place votes. Central Missouri edged out Washburn for the second spot, 108 points to 107.

Next in line is a pair of Kansas schools in Emporia State and Pittsburg State. Fort Hays State went 3-1 against those teams in 2012, splitting with ESU and sweeping PSU. Northwest Missouri State at No. 6 is all that separates the four Kansas schools from stacking in a row in the polls. The Tigers dropped their only match with NWMSU on the road in 2012.

The Tigers dominated opponents in neutral site matches in 2012, going 13-2. They also had a decent 5-6 road record, but taking advantage of the home atmosphere was a struggle in 2012. FHSU finished just 5-6 at home last year and looks to improve on that mark to take the next step up the ladder of the mighty MIAA.

The Tigers are loaded with several solid returners, including five players with All-MIAA accolades in their careers. Senior middle hitter Jenna Ulrich and senior outside hitter Madison Schwartz are each two-time All-MIAA selections, while senior libero Makenzie Weinman grabbed her first all-conference nod in 2012. Junior outside hitter Sara Hewson and junior rightside hitter Taylor Mares each have an all-conference selection to their credit as well. Returning to give FHSU added punch are juniors Camille Hubert and Samantha Ledy. Hubert redshirted 2012 with an injury and bolsters the outside hitter position, while Ledy gives the Tigers another solid option in the middle. Sophomores Tara Hoekman and Mallory Flagor are also in the mix after seeing significant action last year. A new pair of setters, junior transfer Libby Ary and freshman Rachel Parsons, look to gel with the talented veterans. Several newcomers to the squad look to make the Tigers even stronger in 2013.
2013 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll
