Tiger softball drops pair of one-run games at Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. – Fort Hays State fell by one run twice to Emporia State on Friday. The Tigers held leads in both games, but fell by scores of 2-1 and 3-2. FHSU is now 16-17 overall and 9-9 in the MIAA, while Emporia State improved to 18-21 overall and 8-8 in the MIAA. The Tigers fell back into a five-way tie for sixth place in the MIAA standings, with four conference doubleheaders to go.

Game 1: Emporia State 2, Fort Hays State 1
Fort Hays State briefly enjoyed a 1-0 lead following the top of the first inning, but Emporia State tied the game in the bottom half and eventually scored the game-winning run in the fourth inning.

The Tigers struggled to find gaps in the ESU defense as Katie Adler’s single in the first inning was the only hit the Tigers scratched out in the first contest. However, the Tigers did find ways on base, just no runs to show for a couple run-scoring opportunities later in the game. FHSU did draw two walks, got hit by pitches twice, and also had one reach by error.

Down 2-1 in the fifth, the Tigers loaded the bases with a walk, an error by the Hornets, and a hit batter. However, Emporia State pitcher Montana Mesler got a strikeout on a 3-2 count to end the Tiger threat. Mesler hit Allie Jurgensen to lead off the seventh and FHSU used Megan Feiner as a pinch runner, but Feiner moved no further than second base as Emporia State reliever Kelsey Phillips picked up her second save of the season getting a ground out to end the game. Mesler walked two, hit two, and struck out five in her one-hit performance over 6.0 innings to earn the win.

Hailey Chapman allowed only one earned run to the Hornets in a complete-game effort. An error by the Tigers in the first inning allowed Emporia State to get the game tied on a two-out RBI single by Destiny Ojigoh. Rachel Kauss produced the game’s only earned run in the fourth on a sacrifice bunt RBI to score a runner from third and give the Hornets the one-run edge. Chapman gave up eight hits and two walks, but struck out 10.

Game 2: Emporia State 3, Fort Hays State 2
Runs were hard to come by once again in the second game, though both teams had excellent opportunities early. FHSU and ESU played to a scoreless tie until FHSU broke through in the top of the fifth with two runs. However, the Tigers saw the Hornets come back to steal the second game with a run in the bottom of the fifth and then two in the bottom of the seventh to win in walk-off fashion.

Fort Hays State placed eight runners in scoring position over the first four innings, but had nothing in the run column to show for it. The second inning was particularly a tough pill to swallow for the Tigers, coming up empty handed with runners at second and third with no outs. A strikeout, flyout to center field, and another strikeout ended the threat. Later in the fourth, the Tigers led off with a double but struck out, lined out, and grounded out to end another great opportunity with a runner in scoring position and no outs. Not putting the ball in play right after the runners moved into scoring position came back to bite the Tigers in the end.

Emporia State went through the same troubles in the third inning with runners at second and third with one out. A lineout double play ended that threat.

Katie Adler busted through the scoreless stalemate in the fifth when she laced a triple to right field to score Terran Caldwell from first. Caldwell led off the inning with a single. A fielding error on a ball off the bat of Sara Breckbill brought Adler home from third, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead. However, the Tigers did not make the Hornets pay any further for the error with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

Errors would wind up haunting the Tigers late in the game. A throwing error in the bottom of the fifth on Kailee Odegard’s stolen base attempt at second base allowed Odegard to move to third. A sacrifice fly brought home Emporia State’s first run, cutting the FHSU lead in half.

Michaelanne Nelson worked out of danger in the sixth by getting a pair of strikeouts to strand the bases loaded and end a major scoring opportunity for the Hornets. However, her good fortune ended immediately in the seventh on a solo home run surrendered to Brittanie Shepherd, tying the game 2-2. Nelson allowed a walk immediately following the home run, and then the situation became more dire when the Tigers added a throwing error on a the back end of an infield single to put runners at first and third with no outs. Nelson got a pop up for the first out of the inning, but the game-winning run came in from third on a fielder’s choice RBI off the bat of Rachel Kauss, who wound up having the game-winning RBIs in each contest.

Due to unfortunate Tiger errors at critical junctures in the game, only one of Nelson’s runs allowed was earned. She allowed eight hits, walked two, and struck out six. It was the fourth complete-game effort for Nelson this season.

Sydney Righi picked up a complete-game win for the Hornets. She allowed nine hits and struck out six, moving to 5-5 on the season.

Mariners homer in 15th straight game, down Royals 7-6

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Seattle Mariners became the first major league team to homer in each of its first 15 games when Dee Gordon connected in the sixth inning, then beat the Kansas City Royals 7-6 Thursday behind Daniel Vogelbach’s home run leading off the 10th.

Seattle improved the best record in the major leagues to 13-2, completing a four-game sweep and extending its winning streak to six. The Mariners became just the third team since 1987 to open with at least 13 wins in the first 15 games after Milwaukee (14-1 in 1987) and Boston (13-2 last year).

Kansas City has lost 10 straight games, has the poorest record in the big leagues at 2-10 and is off to its worst 12-game start since 2006. The Royals failed to preserve leads of 4-0 in the sixth and 6-4 with two outs in the ninth.

Whit Merrifield went 0 for 5, ending his hitting streak at 31 games. He had not gone hitless since Sept. 9. Royals center fielder Billy Hamilton was carted off with a knee injury after failing to grab Mitch Haniger’s tying, two-run triple in the ninth.

The 2002 Cleveland Indians had homered in each of their first 14 games. Seattle’s 36 home runs are tied with the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals for the most in a club’s first 15 games. The Mariners have scored five or more runs in all but one game.

Vogelbach hit a 427-foot drive off Glenn Sparkman (0-1) for his sixth home run this season.

Brandon Brennan (1-0) struck out three in the ninth, working around his own throwing error on a grounder to get his first big league win. Brennan has not allowed a run in his first 9 2/3 innings in the major leagues, holding batters to a .156 average (5 for 32).

Connor Sadzeck pitched a perfect 10th for his first professional save.

Seattle trailed 6-3 before Edwin Encarnacion hit an RBI single off Wily Peralta in the eighth.

Pinch-hitter Omar Narvaez and Gordon singled off Brad Boxberger with one out in the ninth and Mallex Smith took a called third strike. Haniger hit a long drive on a full count and Hamilton, who entered at the start of the half-inning for defense, allowed the ball to glance off his glove on the warning track.

Haniger, who hit a tiebreaking homer with two outs in the ninth inning on Wednesday, slid into third as two runs scored. Hamilton’s left knee hit the wall, and he crumpled to the warning track, then was unable to put weight on the knee when he got up.

Haniger HR lifts M’s, Merrifield sets KC hit-streak mark

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Mitch Haniger hit a tiebreaking homer with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting the Seattle Mariners over the Royals 6-5 Wednesday night after Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to a Kansas City-record 31 games.

Merrifield’s RBI bunt single in the seventh tied it at 5 and moved him past Hall of Famer George Brett for the Royals mark.

Haniger took Brad Boxberger (0-2) deep, lifting Seattle to 12-2 following an offseason roster overhaul. The Mariners and the 2002 Cleveland Indians are the only teams since 1908 to homer in each of their first 14 games. The Mariners have 34 homers, tied with the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals for most ever through 14 games. Seattle has scored at least five runs 13 times.

Anthony Swarzak (1-0) got two outs in the eighth, and Roenis Elias worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for his second save.

Seattle’s Jay Bruce, tied for the AL homer lead with seven, left the game in the fourth inning with tightness in his left Achilles tendon.

Kansas City dropped to 2-9 with its ninth straight loss.

Merrifield bunted with Terrance Gore on third in the seventh. He placed the ball perfectly up the third-base line and tipped his cap to a cheering crowd after reaching first without a throw.

Gore made his first major league start and had three hits in the game after entering with two hits over six major league seasons. His two-out double helped Kansas City threaten in the ninth, but after Merrifield was walked intentionally and Billy Hamilton drew a free pass, Adalberto Mondesi popped up to end it.

Yusei Kikuchi gave up three runs and five hits through six innings for Seattle. He retired the last 10 batters he faced after allowing the second of two home runs.

Jorge Soler hit a 454-foot home run in the third. Hunter Dozier also took Kikuchi deep.

LONG TIME COMING

Gore was part of the Royals’ back-to-back AL championships in 2014 and 2015 but usually as a pinch-runner. He has appeared in 67 games but had only 20 plate appearances. He got his first major league hit last season with the Chicago Cubs. He got his first hit with the Royals earlier this season.

“I don’t want to pigeon-hole him as a baserunner,” manager Ned Yost said. “I’ve watched him work his tail off – Alex Gordon-type work. I watch him take batting practice every day. He’s gotten stronger. His swing’s gotten better. As long as he’s working hard, I want to provide opportunity for him.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Mariners: SS Tim Beckham returned to the lineup after missing two games with a tight right hamstring.

UP NEXT

Mariners RHP Mike Leake (2-0, 2.92 ERA) will get the start for the Mariners in the final game of the four-game series. He’ll face Royals RHP Jorge Lopez (0-1, 4.09 ERA).

Mariners hand KC 8th straight L; Merrifield hit streak at 30

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Dee Gordon got three hits and drove in two runs as the high-scoring Seattle Mariners extended baseball’s best record with a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

The Mariners improved to 11-2 and have scored at least five runs in 12 of those games. The Royals lost their eighth in a row.

Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 30 games, tying a Royals record set by George Brett in 1980. He led off the bottom of the first with an opposite-field triple to stretch a streak that began last Sept. 10 and included the final 20 games of the season.

But the Mariners have some impressive streaks of their own.

When Jay Bruce hit his AL-leading seventh home run in the first inning, the Mariners extended their string to 13 games at the start of a season with at least one home run, matching the Detroit Tigers in 2017. The 2002 Cleveland Indians (14 games) are the only team since 1908 to open the season with more games with home runs.

Seattle also matched the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals with the most home runs (33) through their first 13 games.

Merrifield scored the tying run in the first on an RBI single by Adalberto Mondesi.

Speedy Billy Hamilton scored from second base on a sacrifice fly when Mallex Smith fell down in deep center catching Mondesi’s drive, making it 2-all in the third.

Gordon had a two-run single in the fourth for a 4-2 lead.

Marco Gonzales (4-0) gave up two earned runs in six-plus innings. Anthony Swarzak pitched the ninth for his second save in two opportunities.

Jakob Junis (1-1) allowed four runs in four innings. Richard Lovelady, the Royals’ fourth pitcher of the night, pitched a perfect eighth inning in his major league debut.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Mariners: INF Tim Beckham remained out of the starting lineup with tightness in his right hamstring. He tweaked it in the Mariners’ 12-5 victory over the White Sox on Sunday. Manager Scott Servais said the decision to hold out Beckham was by the training staff. “Beckham feels better today,” he said. “He could probably go out there and start the ballgame tonight.”

Royals: LHPs Danny Duffy and Brian Flynn remain on the 10-day IL with differing arm issues. Kansas City manager Ned Yost said they’re “doing fine” in their rehabs but wouldn’t elaborate further.

ROSTER NEWS

Mariners RHP Chasen Bradford was placed on the 10-day IL with shoulder inflammation. “We’ve used him a lot early,” Servais said. “He’s kind of our go-to guy. You know what you’re going to get when Chasen goes out there. He’s been very effective. We got a couple of innings out of him last night. He came in after the game and said he felt a little sore, tight. He came in today and he has a little bit of restricted range of motion. He’s probably going to be down three, four, maybe five days. With the 10-day DL, let’s give him time to get right. It’s April 9, so we’ve got time.” He was replaced on the roster by RHP Erik Swanson, who will make his debut in the major leagues with his first appearance.

Royals recalled RHP Heath Fillmyer and purchased the contract of Lovelady from Triple-A Omaha. RHP Kevin McCarthy and LHP Tim Hill were optioned to Omaha. Lovelady is on the major league roster for the first time in his career. “This is everything I ever dreamed of,” Lovelady said prior to Tuesday’s game. He found out after getting off the plane in Omaha following a road trip when Stormchasers manager Brian Poldberg called him and asked him to come back to baggage claim. When he went back, Poldberg told him, “They need you.” Lovelady asked, “What are you talking about?” When Poldberg told him he was heading to Kansas City he said he “lost words and started crying.”

UP NEXT

Mariners: LHP Yusei Kikuchi (0-0, 4.02 ERA) will get the start for the Mariners in the second game of the four-game series. It will be the first time Kikuchi has pitched with four days’ rest, as opposed to the five days’ rest he is used to in Japanese baseball.

Royals: Had not named a starter for Wednesday’s game, though that spot could fall to Fillmyer, who pitched in 17 games (13 starts) with the Royals in 2018, compiling a 4-2 mark with a 4.26 ERA.

FHSU baseball bested by Bethany

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped a mid-week non-conference contest against Bethany College on Tuesday 17-6 at Larks Park. The Tigers moved to 3-28 on the season. The Swedes stayed at 12-26 overall as this was an exhibition game for Bethany.

The Tigers produced six runs on 12 hits in the contests. Landon Erway had a successful day at the plate after finishing 3-for-4 from the dish. Erway scored a run and also earned a walk as the No. 3 hitter in the Tiger lineup.

Garrett Francis and Tyler Olsen were the only other Tigers to produce a multi-hit attack at the plate. Francis produced two RBI singles on the evening when he plated Marcus Altman in the fourth frame, cutting the Swede lead to 7-3 at the time.

Tyler Olson put the Tigers on the board in the first after attempting a double steal but getting caught in a rundown. However, Erway cross home plate before the out occurred. The black and gold struck for another run in the second, this time on a successful double steal attempt when Dawson Sramek took second base and Altman stole home.

FHSU tallied three runs in the sixth when Bryce Baumwart started things with a two-out double to center field and advanced to third on a balk call on the Swede pitcher. Francis pushed Baumwart past home plate when he legged out an infield single. Bethany switched pitchers and Grasser took advantage with a single to center field, allowing Francis to challenge the throw home. The throw did beat Francis, but the Swede catcher couldn’t hold on. The Tigers kept the line moving when Taylan Mullins-Ohm plated Grasser with an RBI single up the gut of the defense, again cutting the deficit to 9-6 after six inning of play.

The Tigers were held scoreless the remaining three innings, as the Swedes tacked on two in the seventh, four in the eighth and two in the ninth.

Tiger starter Tanner Smith (1-3) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits across 2.2 innings of work, striking out three and walking one batter. The bullpen came on in relief with five pitchers getting work on the mound; Ryan Brown (3.1 IP), Cody Rottinghaus (1.0 IP), Chase Werth (1.0 IP) and Jake Vieira (1.0 IP).

FHSU will resume conference play this weekend when they host Washburn for a three-game set, beginning on Friday (April 12). The series-opening contest is scheduled as Pack the Park for fans of all ages to enjoy some Tiger baseball! First pitch on Friday is slated for 6 p.m.
