Senior Eagles Sweep Pratt

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion picked up two more wins Wednesday, sweeping the Pratt 89ers 10-1 and 7-6 at Smokey Ford Field in Pratt. The Eagles improve to 22-16 on the season They are scheduled to play again Friday and Saturday against the Colorado Baseball Academy 17s.

Game 1: Hays 10, Pratt 1 (6 innings)
The Eagles scored three in the third on a John Griffith bases loaded walk and Kade Parker two-run double to go up 4-0. Layne Downing’s RBI double and Marcus Altman’s run-scoring single in the fifth pushed the lead to 6-0.

After Pratt scored in the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles broke it all the way open by scoring four in the sixth. John Griffith’s single drove in two.

Chandler Rule had three hits helping Brady Bieker (3-6) to the win. He allowed one run on four hits over five innings.

Game 2: Hays 7, Pratt 6
Casey Sedbrook’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning scored Layne Downing to break a 6-6 tie.

Hays scored four in the third to take a 6-2 lead. Pratt battled back with two in the bottom of the third and two in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.

Dan Bittel and Kade Parker each had three of the Eagles 13 hits.

Chandler Rule allowed two runs on three hits over two innings for the win. Layne Downing pitched the final two innings of scoreless relief for the save.

Larks Lose Non-League Road Game in Junction City

Junction City scored on a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and end a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Hays Larks Wednesday night at Rathert Stadium in Junction City. The loss snaps the Larks three-game win streak and is their first non-league loss of the season. Hays is now 26-10. They host the Brigade Thursday night at Larks Park at 7pm. Admission is free and you can hear the game on KAYS (1400-AM).

Brent Gillespie hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 3-3. Mackenzie Handel homered in the fifth which tied the game 1-1.

Larks outfielder Clayton Garland takes the loss in his first pitching appearance of the season. He was the last of six Larks pitchers used in the game.

Hays Monarchs Split With Great Bend

The Hays Monarchs split their doubleheader with the Great Bend Chiefs Wednesday night at Larks Park. Jordan Gottschalk’s base hit in the 12th lifted the Monarchs to an 8-7 win in the first game. Great Bend raced out to an early lead and wins the second game 10-3 in five innings. The Monarchs are now 14-12 on the season. They begin zone play Sunday in Lincoln.

Game 1: Monarchs 8, Great Bend 7 (12 innings)
Jordan Gottschalk’s single score Ryan Schippers with the game winner in the 12th inning. Gottschalk and Schippers both had three hits in the game.

The Chiefs scored three in the first but the Monarchs answered with two in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to take a 7-5 lead. Great Bend came back with two more in the fifth to tie the game 7-7 and it would stay that way until the 12th.

Cameron Brin gets the win, not allowing a run on four hits over the final five innings.

Game 2: Great Bend 10, Monarchs 3 (5 innings)
The Chiefs score six in the first and led 9-0 after three innings.

Shane Zimmerman had one of the Monarchs three hits and had their lone RBI.

Kameron Schmidt takes the loss, allowing nine runs on eight hits while walking five and striking out two over three innings.

Junior Legion Headed To State

The Hays Junior Legion is headed to the class A state tournament in Burlington after a 15-3 win over Dodge City in their zone tournament title game Tuesday at Larks Park. Trenton Henningson threw a no-hitter in a game that saw 10 errors.

Monday the Junior Eagles beat  Garden City 6-1 then knocked off Dodge City 16-6 in four innings.

Zgardowski Leads Larks Past Dodge City

Larks starter Jason Zgardowski held Dodge City scoreless through seven innings, allowing just one run on a passed ball in the eighth, helping the Hays Larks to a 7-2 win over the A’s Monday night in Dodge City. Larks improve to 26-9 and 19-9 in the Jayhawk League where they increase their lead over El Dorado to 2 1/2 games.

Hays jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three, scoring on two groundouts in the second and a Clayton Garland single in the third.

Zair Koeiman’s RBI double in the fifth put Hays up 4-0 and it would stay that way until the eighth when the A’s scored on a passed ball. Zgardowski would leave with two outs and the bases loaded. DJ Carr came in and got a strikeout to get out of the jam.

The Larks then scored three in the top of the ninth. The A’s got a solo homer in the bottom of the inning for the final margin.

Zgardowski struck out six and walked three to move to 4-3. Carr picks up his second save.

Zair Koieman went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a two-run homer and two walks and drove in three. Clayton Garland had two hits and an RBI to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

The Larks are back on the road Wednesday for a non-league game at Junction City. The Brigade make the return trip to Hays Thursday then the Larks host Derby for a weekend series beginning Friday.

El Dorado and Wellington were rained out Monday night.

Two Heartbreaking Losses for Hays Monarchs

The Hays Monarchs American Legion dropped a couple of heartbreakers to Dodge City Monday night. Dodge City scored on a two-out base hit in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener 2-1. They then rally for two with one out in the bottom of the seventh to take the second game 7-6. The Monarchs are now 13-11 on the year. They host Great Bend tomorrow.

Game 1: Dodge City 2, Hays 1
Both teams scored a run in the third. The Monarchs getting their’s on a Jordan Gottschalk single.

Dodge City scored the go-head run on a two-out single off off Pierce Schippers who takes the loss, allowing two runs on eight hits, walking one and striking none.

Game 2: Dodge City 7, Hays 6
The Monarchs rallied from a 5-1 deficit, scoring two in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead. Dodge City would answer with two in the bottom of the seventh for the win.

Shane Zimmerman went the distance allowing seven runs, three earned, on six hits, striking out three and walking five.

Cameron Brin, Jordan Gottschalk and Ryan Schippers all had two hits. Kameron Schmidt drove in two.

Goza Leads Larks to Win Over Liberal

Nick Goza allowed two runs on six hits over six innings leading the Hays Larks to a 6-3 win over Liberal Sunday night and a sweep of the two-game series at Larks Park. The Larks improve to 25-9 overall and 18-9 in the Jayhawk League where they lead El Dorado by two games. The Bee Jays drop their third straight and are now 18-16 overall and 12-16 in league play.

Goza moved to 5-0, walking one over his six innigns of work. DJ Carr, Ian Bentley and David Owen combine to allow one run over the final three innings of relief. Owen pitched a perfect ningth for his fourth save.

Game Highlights

|The Larks struck in the first, scoring on a Cody Daily single. A bases-loaded walk to Mackenzie Handel in the third made it 2-0. The Larks tacked on three in the fourth, two of them on Aaron Cornell’s two-run single to right.

The Larks are on the road Monday for a league game at Dodge City. They return home Thursday to play Junction City then play their final home weekend series against Derby.

Larks Beat Liberal in Extra Innings

Cody Daily’s single to right field scored Jake Plazcek from second base and lift the Hays Larks to a 2-1, 10 inning victory over the Liberal Bee Jays Saturday night at Larks Park. Placzek walked with one out then stole second to set up Daily’s heroics. The win improves the Larks to 24-9 overall and 17-9 in the Jayhawk League where they increase their lead over El Dorado to 1 1/2 games.

Larks starter Chandler Hawkins allowed one run on four hits over 8 2/3 innings. David Owen recorded the final out in the ninth then worked the 10th and picks up the win.

The Larks scored in the first and led 1-0 until the eighth. Hays outhit the Bee Jays 14-4.

Late Rally Costs Hays Eagles Senior American Legion

The Lee’s Summit Pirates scored nine runs with two outs in the sixth inning to rally past the Hays Eagles Senior American Legion 13-12 Saturday at the Lee’s Summit (Mo.) Wood Bat Tournament. The Eagles (20-16) had scored 10 runs in the top of the fifth to grab an 11-5 lead.

The Eagles finish 1-4 in the 40-team tournament.

Brady Bieker, the fourth Eagles pitcher of the game, takes the loss allowing two unearned runs without recording an out in the sixth.

Kade Parker had three hits and Hayden Hutchison drove in three runs for Hays.

Great Bend’s Gotsche shoots 77 at U.S. Senior Open

Steve Gotsche tried and tried but could just never get that birdie that would turn his round, and his U.S. Open around.  The Great Bend native shot 7-over 77 Friday atScreen Shot 2013-07-13 at 7.07.48 AM the U.S. Senior Open at the Omaha Country Club.  He was +12 for the tournament missing the cut by 6-strokes.

Gotsche, who shot a 5 over par 75 in Thursday’s round, needed to shoot par or better on Friday to have a chance at making the cut and getting back in the tournament.  But he bogied the first hole Friday morning and made the turn 3-over for the round and 8-over for the tournament.  His round fell apart on the final four holes as he was a combined 4-over on 15,16,17, and 18.

Michael Allen shot a course record 63 to go to 10-under for the tournament and leads the event with two days left by 5 shots over Rocco Mediate.

Hays Eagles Split at Wood Bat Tournament

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion split their two games Thursday at the Blue Springs, Missouri Wood Bat Tournament. The Eagles beat the Hawthorn Bank Outlaws from Lee’s Summit, Missouri 3-0 then lose a controversial 4-3 contest to SMCI out of DeSoto. They drop to 1-2 in pool play and are 19-14 overall. The Eagles close out pool play Friday against the Post 642 Travelers from Sedalia, Mo.

Game 1: Hays 3, Hawthorn Bank Outlaws 0
Layne Downing (4-2) pitched a complete game three-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking just one.

Hays scored a run in the third on a error then added two in the fourth on a Kyler Niernberger groundout and a wild pitch.

Both teams had three hits.

Game 2: HMCI 4, Hays 3
The Eagles had a 3-0 lead after three innings and thought they had a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth after turning what appeared to be a triple play to end the fifth, but as the Eagles were running off the field, the umpire ruled that third baseman Layne Downing didn’t catch a line drive on the fly which resulted in only two outs and allowed runners to score from first and third to tie the game.

SMCI then scored the game-winner bottom of the seventh after a one-out double and single.

Cade Parker takes the loss despite striking out seven and walking just one in 6 1/3 innings.

Hays scored a run in the first on a Chandler Rule single then plated two in the third on a John Griffith grounder.

Great Bend’s Gotsche +5 at U.S. Senior Open

US Senior Open LogoThere’s a seven-way tie atop the leaderboard at the U.S. Senior Open in Omaha. Tom Lehman, Mark O’Meara, Fred Funk and Kenny Perry among those at three-under following Thursday’s first round. Tom Watson is three shots back at even-par.

Great Bend’s Steve Gotsche shot a five-over-par 75 and is tied for 97th. Topeka’s Mark Elliott shot a nine-over-par 79 and is tied for 131st.

Second round action begins Friday morning at the Omaha Country Club.
