Larks Postponed in El Dorado

The Hays Larks maintained their one-game lead in the Jayhawk League over El Dorado after the third and final game of their series with the Broncos was postponed Thursday night due to water in the outfield. The game will be rescheduled if it has a bearing on the league title.

The 23-9 Larks are back at Saturday night for the first of a two-game series with Liberal. Saturday’s game is Pack the Park and Pack the Pantry night with fans encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for the Community Assistance Center. Sunday’s game is Poker Hand Night and Harley Night.  Seven o’clock start with free admission both nights.

Larks Fall Short in El Dorado

One night after scoring 18 runs on 19 hits, the Hays Larks are held to just two runs on seven hits as they fall to El Dorado 4-2 Wednesday night at McDonald Park in El Dorado.  The win pulls the Broncos (20-12, 16-11 Jayhawk League) back within a game of the first-place Larks (23-9, 16-9) in the Jayhawk League standings.

The Broncos did most of their damage in the third, scoring three runs on five hits. The Broncos used four straight singles off Larks starter Jason Zgardowski to grab a 2-0 lead. They would get a two-out single to drive in the third run.

The Larks scored in the sixth on a Jake Placzek single but left the bases loaded. Down 4-1, they added another run in the eighth on a Clayton Garland single.

Zgardowski (3-3) takes the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out one over five innings. Dalton Viner made his return to the team and allowed the other run on one hit in 1 2/3 innings.

The teams wrap up the three-game series Thursday night. The Larks then return home to face Liberal on Saturday.

Eagles Drop Opener in Blue Springs Wood Bat Tourney

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion drops their opener at the Blue Springs (M0.) Wood Bat Tournament Wednesday, falling 9-2 to the Central (Mo.) Spartans from St. Charles, Mo. The loss drops the Eagles to 19-13 on the season.

The Spartans jumped on Eagles starter Brady Bieker with four runs in the first inning. Hays got on the board in the third on a Hayden Hutchison single.

The Spartans added two in the fourth to go up 6-1. Clayton Basgall scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to make it 6-2. Central then put the game away scoring three in the bottom of the sixth.

Bieker (2-5) takes the loss, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits while walking three and striking out one.

Dan Bittel had four of the Eagles nine hits.

The Eagles continue pool play Thursday against the Hawthorne Bank Outlaws from Lee’s Summit, Mo. and SMCI from DeSoto, Kan.

Ellis Legion Splits With Lincoln

The Ellis American Legion baseball team splits their doubleheader Wednesday night with Lincoln. Ellis rallied from a seven-run deficit only to drop the opener 9-7. They win game two 10-2 in five innings. Ellis is now 14-6 on the season.

Several costly errors and lack of hitting had Ellis trailing 8-1 going into the sixth inning. They came back to score three in the sixth then added three more in the seventh and had runners at second and third when the game ended.

Ellis scores 10 runs on 10 hits including three doubles and committed no errors in thegame. Craybill was winning pitcher striking out eight, 
walking four and only giving up one hit. 

Larks Hit Five Home Runs in Blowout Win Over El Dorado

The Hays Larks continue their dominance over the El Dorado Broncos. After sweeping their three-game series in Hays a little over a month ago, they take game one of their three-game series in El Dorado 18-3 Tuesday night. The win improves the Larks to 23-8 overall and 16-8 in the Jayhawk League while the Broncos fall to 19-12 and 15-11 in league play. The Larks lead in the Jayhawk League is now two games over the Broncos who have lost two straight.

The Larks score five in the second home runs from Taylor Peterson, Cody Daily and Aaron Cornell. Peterson and Daily hit solo shots while Cornell hit a three-run shot.

The Larks then blow the game open, scoring 11 runs in the third. Zair Koeiman drove in four in the inning with a double and a three-run homer. Blair Beck also homered as the Larks send 14 to the plate in the inning.

Peterson finished the night with four hits and three RBIs. Cornell had three hits and drove in five. Koeiman had four RBIs and Ty Gilmore drove in three.

Nick Goza (4-0) allowed the three runs on six hits over eight innings and picks up the win. Goza struck out five and walked none. David Owen pitched to ninth.

Larks Down Denver

The Hays Larks opened up a big week with a win, defeating the Denver Cougars 7-2 Monday night at Larks Park. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak and improves their record to 22-8.

Hays scored three in the second and never looked back. Aaron Cornell had two hits and drove in two. The Larks also had solo homers from Brent Gillespie and Mackenzie Handel.

Starter Logan DeRosier gets credit for the win, going four innings and allowing one run on three hits. Alex Frey allowed the other run two innings of relief. Former Lark and Fort Hays State Tiger Andy Lewton threw two scoreless innings and former Tiger Kyle Leroy pitched a perfect ninth.

Notes: Catcher Spencer Neve from Santa Rosa [Calif.] CC made his debut vs. Denver and went 2-for-2 with two doubles an RBI and a run scored… The Larks will have a one-game game lead in the Jayhawk League over El Dorado heading into their key three game series with the Broncos beginning Tuesday. The Broncos lost at home to Wellington 10-1 Monday night.

Hays Eagles Senior American Legion Finishes 4-1 at WWF Tourney

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion finished defeats the SC Prospects 5-0 Sunday morning to finish 4-1 in the Wild WestFest Tournanent. The Eagles are now 19-12 on the season and will play at a tournament in Kansas City this weekend.

The Eagles did all of their scoring Sunday in the first inning. Hayden Hutchison’s two-run single proved to be all the Eagles would need. Layne Downing, John Griffith and Marcus Altman also drove in runs.

Cade Parker went the distance for the win, allowing just hits runs, walking two and striking out two.

Hays Monarchs Win Final Three at WWF Tourney

The Hays Monarchs win their final three games at the Wild WestFest Tournament to 3-2. The Monarchs closed out play with a pair of wins Sunday at Hays High, defeating the Colorado Bandits 8-7 then knocking off Canon City 7-3. The Monarchs are now 11-9 on the season and are back at home Wednesday for a doubleheader with Larned.

The Monarchs scored three in the third to take the lead in the first game. Pierce Schippers had three hits and two RBIs. Kameron Schmidt pitched a complete game and gets the win.

Game 2: Monarchs 7, Canon City 3
The Monarchs raced out to a 4-0 lead after three innings against Canon City. Braiden Werth went 3-for-3 and Cameron Brin pitched six innings for the victory.

Larks End Losing Streak With Win over A’s

Larks LogoNick Goza turned in a complete game three hitter Tuesday night the Hays Larks to a 5-2 win over the Dodge City A’s at Larks Park.

Goza allow just two unearned runs on three hits and struck out five as he improved to 3-0 with the win.

Clayton Garland homered with one out in the first inning giving Hays a 1-0 lead but the Larks left the bases loaded.

The Larks scored an unearned run in the second on two more in their half of the third on a Ty Gilmore two-run single.

Hays scored their final run of the game in the fourth inning on a MacKenzie Handel RBI single giving the Larks a 5-0 lead.

Dodge City scored two runs unearned runs in the sixth inning cutting the Larks’ lead to 5-2 and Hays would go on to win by that score.

Ty Gilmore finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and MacKenzie Handel was 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Larks put an end to their three-game losing streak.

The Larks are now 20-6 and 15-6 in the Jayhawk League.

Hays is on the road Wednesday to take on Dodge City at 7 o’clock.

Hays Eagle Sweep Great Bend

American Legion baseball patchThe Hays Eagles American Legion baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Great Bend Tuesday night.

Game 1: Hays 11, Great Bend 0

The Eagles opened the game with a five run first on their way to an 11-0 win in four innings.

In the first inning Hayden Hutchison got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly that scored Clayton Basgall. Then with the bases loaded Kade Parker singled in two runs. Jake Sedbrook and Clayton Basgall both added RBI’s in the five run first.

Parker was 1-for-2 in the game with 3 RBI and Jake Sedbrook and Clayton Basgall each drove in two. Cameron Klaus picked up the win for Hays. He allowed just three hits in four innings.

Game 2: Hays 6, Great Bend 1 in 11 innings

Chandler Rule tripled in the first run of the game in the first inning, giving Hays the 1-0 lead.

Great Bend tied the game at one in the fourth inning and then neither team was able to get anything going until the top of the 10th when the Eagle scored five runs giving Hays the 6-1 win.

In the 10th Hays was able to load the bases for Chandler Rule who doubled in three runs and John Griffith and Jake Sedbrook added an RBI in the inning as well.

Rule was 3-for-5 with 4 RBI. Kade Parker picked up the win in relief for Hays.

The Eagles are 15-11 on the season.

Larks Fall in Extra Innings

Larks LogoFor the first time all season the Hays Larks were swept in a three-game series after the Wellington Heat came from behind Monday night to pick up an 8-7 win in 11 innings.

Taylor Peterson hit two home runs, a solo homerun in the first that gave Hays a 2-1 lead and a grand slam in the fifth giving the Larks a 6-3 lead but it wouldn’t be enough. Wellington would answer back with two runs and the eighth and two more in the ninth tying the game at 7.

In the top of the 11th Wellington’s Trevor Long hit a homer giving the Heat the 8-7 lead and they would hold on for the win.

Taylor Peterson finished 3-for-5 with two homeruns and five RBI for the Larks.

The Larks are now 13-6 in the Jayhawk League and 19-6 overall. The Larks host Dodge City Tuesday night at 7 o’clock at Larks Park.

Hays Monarchs Split With Ellis

American Legion baseball patchThe Hays American Legion Monarchs split a doubleheader Monday evening against Ellis at TMP field.

Ellis opened the first game with three runs in the first inning and scored at least one run in each of the first five innings on their way to a 9-8 win.

The Monarchs closed the gap with four runs in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh but Ellis was able to hold on for the win.

Jordan Gottschalk drove in two runs and Braiden Werth suffered the loss for Hays.

The Monarchs opened the second game with five runs in the first and two more in second inning on their way to an 8-0 win.

Jordan Gottschalk and Jordan Schippers both drove in two runs for Hays and Ryan Schippers picked up the win.

The Monarchs are now 8-7 on the season and they are scheduled to play in the Wild West Fest Tournament later in the week.
