Big Third Inning Carries Larks to Ninth Straight Win

Larks LogoThe Hays Larks scored five runs in the third inning then held off a late Wellington rally to defeat the Heat 8-5 and run their winning streak to nine games. The Larks, who now lead the Jayhawk League by three games over both Wellington and El Dorado, improve to 12-1 overall and 8-1 in the Jayhawk League. The Heat drop to 9-4 and 5-4 in league play.

The Larks scored on a Mackenzie Handel single to grab a 1-0 lead in the first. They would go up 2-0 on an Aaron Cornell RBI double in the second.

Hays would push the lead to 7-0 with the five-run third. Josh White knocked in the first two runs with a two-run double. Desmond Roberts followed with another two-run double then Cody Daily singled home the fifth run.

Ty Gilmore led off the sixth with a walk and scored in a wild pitch to put Hays up 8-0.

Wellington rallied with three in the seventh and two in the ninth before Dalton Viner got a strikeout to end the comeback bid.

Starter Nick Goza threw six shutout innings to pick up the win, allowing three hits while walking four and striking out three. Viner pitched the final three innings for the save. He allowed five runs on four hits while walking four and striking out four.

Cody Daily had three of the Larks 11 hits. Aaron Cornell and Desmond Roberts both had two hits.

The Larks go for the series sweep and their 10th straight win in Sunday night.

Hays Eagles Splits in Colorado

American Legion baseball patchAfter having their tournament in Canon City cancelled due to the Colorado wildfires, the Hays Eagles Senior American Legion altered their schedule playing a pair of doubleheaders in Erie, Colorado. The Eagles split their two games with Ralston, Neb. Saturday, losing the opener 7-6 then winning the second game 10-0 in five innings. The Eagles are now 8-7 and play Erie/Longmont, Colorado in doubleheader Sunday.

Game 1: Ralston 7, Hays 6
Ralston jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the first three innings then held the Eagles at bay as they tried to make a late inning rally. Both teams scored three in the fourth then the Eagles rallied for three in the top of the seventh, but John Griffith flied out to end the rally.

Starter Marcus Altman takes the loss, allowing all seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits over the first four innings. Brady Bieker pitched the final two scoreless innings of relief.

Game 2: Hays 10, Ralston 0 (5 innings)
Kade Parker pitched a no-hitter in his first outing on the mound helping the Eagles gain the split. Parker struck out six and walked only two.

The Eagles scored single runs in the first and second, three in the third then blew it open with a five-run fourth.

Hayden Hutchison hit a two-run homer the the five-run fourth. Daniel Bittel, Chandler Rule and John Griffth also added two RBIs apiece.

Larks Pull Away Late for 8th Straight Win

Larks LogoThe Hays Larks scored three in the seventh to take the lead then added seven in the ninth to blow the game open and defeat the Wellington Heat 12-3 Friday night in game one of their key early season Jayhawk League series at Hibbs-Hooten Field in Wellington. It’s the Larks eighth straight win which improves them to 11-1 overall and 6-1 in the Jayhawk League. The Heat fall to 9-3 on the season and 5-3 in league play, two games back of the Larks in the standings.

The Larks grabbed the early lead, scoring two in the third on an Aaron Cornell two-run homer. Wellington tied the game with two in the fourth then grabbed the lead with a run in the fifth. It would stay 2-1 until the seventh when Cornell gave the Larks the lead for good with a two-out, two-run double. Two batters later Clayton Garland was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Larks then blew the game open scoring seven in the top of the ninth. Taylor Peterson and Josh White both hit two-run singles. Zair Koeiman drove in a run with a double. Clayton Garland knocked one in with a single and Ty Gilmore drove in one on a groundout.

Aaron Cornell had a big night at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a homer and a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. His home run was his first as a Lark since 7/14/11 at Haysville. It also extended his hit streak to 11 games dating back to last season. Clayton Garland, Taylor Peterson and Josh White all had two RBIs in the game

Jason Zgardowski moved to 2-0 in his second start, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking three over six innings. DJ Carr pitched three scoreless innings for the save.

FHSU’s Schmidt-Bickel Indoor Training Facility Nearing Completion

There are still a few small items to finish, but for the most part, Fort Hays State’s new Schmidt-Bickel Indoor Training Facility is complete. Crews recently put down the floor for the new weight room and late this week were putting the finishing touches on the 65-yard field inside the 50,000 square feet facility.

Crews have also started to rip out the old turf inside Lewis Field. The new playing surface, which will be similar to the one inside Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, will be ready to go for the start of the FHSU training camp in August.

Larks Rally For Seventh Straight Win

The Hays Larks overcame an early five-run deficit to beat the Dodge City A’s 6-5 Thursday night at Larks Park to run their winning streak to seven. Hays improves toLarks game 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the Jayhawk League where they hold a one-game lead over Wellington who they begin a three-game weekend series with in Wellington Friday night. The A’s drop their seventh straight and fall to 2-8 overall and 0-7 in the Jayhawk League.

The Larks tied the game on a Cody Daily home run in the sixth then took advantage of two errors in the seventh and scored the game winner on a Desmond Roberts single.

Zair Koeiman hit a two-run single in the third and Mackenzie Handel hit a two-run homer in the fifth.

Ian Bentley threw three scoreless innings of relief to get the win after starter Jeff Chesnut allowing all five runs on five hits while walking five over the first three innings. David Owen worked around two ninth inning walks to pick up his first save.

 

 

Larks Win Sixth Straight

Larks LogoThe Hays Larks hit three home runs and got another strong start from Chandler Hawkins and beat the Dodge City A’s 6-1 Wednesday night at Cavalier Field in Dodge City. The Larks have now won six straight and improve to 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the Jayhawk League where they have a half-game lead over Wellington.

Taylor Peterson’s two-run homer highlighted the Larks three-run fifth which gave them the lead for good. Desmond Roberts hit a solo shot in the sixth and Josh White added a two-run blast in the seventh.

Hawkins, a sophomore from Arkansas State, allowed one run on three hits while striking out 10 and walking two to move to 3-0. Hawkins walked the first two batters to lead off the second and allowed the A’s only run to score on a groundout. He would allow two hits in the fourth and one in the fifth then retired the final eight that he faced.

Dalton Viner and David Owen both worked a scoreless inning of relief to close out the game.

The Larks and A’s play again tonight at Larks Park beginning at seven o’clock. Free admission thanks to the Glassman Corporation.

Elsewhere last night in the Jayhawk League… Wellington edged El Doardo 3-2 in 14 innings and Derby beat Owasso (Okla.) in a non-league game 10-3.

Hays Monarchs Split with Dodge City

The Hays Monarchs American Legion team split their home doubleheader with Dodge City Wednesday night. The Monarchs win game one 11-1 in five innings. Dodge came back to take game two 10-7.

Pierce Schippers gets the win in game one and Kameron Schmidt takes the loss in game two.

The Monarchs are now 2-3 on the season. They play Hoisington Friday.

Briggs Named to All-State Team

Shea BriggsThe 2013 Kansas Softball Coaches Association released their All-State selections this week and Hays High’s Shea Briggs was a 2nd team selection in the infield.

The senior first-baseman led the team in hitting with a .541 average, had a team-high 46 hits and second in runs scored with 27 and doubles with six.

Briggs also led the Indians on the base paths going 24-for-24 in stolen base attempts.

She also started all 24 games at 1st base and committed just three errors all season.

Briggs was also a 1st team all WAC selection this season.

Hays Eagles Sweep Great Bend

American Legion BaseballThe Hays Eagles Senior American Legion Eagles combined for 28 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Great Bend Yesterday in Hays.

 

Game 1 – Hays 20, Great Bend 0 (3 innings)

Hays opened the game with an eight run inning and added 12 in the second inning on their way to the 20-0 win.

Hays starter Brady Bieker allowed just three hits in the three innings for his second win of the season.

Every hitter in the Hays lineup drove in at least one run and eight of the nine Eagles had at least one hit as well.

Jake Sedbrook was 2-for-2 with 3RBI and Dan Bittel was 1-for-2 with 3RBI as well.

 

Game 2 – Hays 8, Great Bend 0 (5 innings)

The Eagles opened game two with five run inning that was highlighted by a John Griffith two-run double. Hays added three more in the second on their way to the 8-0 win in five innings.

Eagles’ starter Chandler Rule allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out three in five innings for his first win of the season.

John Griffith was 2-for-3 with 3RBI.

The Eagles are now 7-6 on the season and they are scheduled to play in a tournament in Canon City Colorado that begins on Thursday.

Larks Blowout El Dorado for Series Sweep

Larks LogoThe Hays Larks used a good start from Nick Goza and three big innings to break open a tight game and defeat the El Dorado Broncos 12-2 for the three-game Jayhawk League series sweep last night at Larks Park. Goza picks up his first win of the season, allowing one run on four hits over seven innings, striking out five and walking two.

The Larks had a 1-0 lead before scoring five in the fifth. They then added three in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Taylor Peterson’s two-out single to right pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning. Zair Koieman drove in two with a double to the wall in right. Cody Daily followed with a double to left.

Game Highlights

Mackenzie Handel, Zair Koeiman, Elvin Rodriguez and Ty Gilmore all had two hits. Koeiman and Peterson both drove in three.

It’s the Larks fifth straight win which improves them to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Jayhawk League. The Broncos drop their third straight and fall to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in league play. Hays is off until Wednesday when they travel to Dodge City. The A’s make the return trip to Larks Park on Thursday for a 7pm contest.

Hays Eagles Senior American Legion Goes 1-2 in Nebraska

American Legion BaseballThe Hays Eagles Senior American Legion goes 1-2 at a tournament in North Platte, Nebraska over the weekend.

Saturday the Eagles lost 4-3 to North Platte then Sunday, blanked Gering, Nebraska 5-0 behind a four-hit shutout from Marcus Altman who also broke the scoreless tie with a two-run single in the fourth.

The Eagles then lost their finale to JC Brager out of Nebraska 10-9. The Eagles blowing an 8-2 lead, giving up eight in the bottom of the sixth. Hays had scored five in the fourth and two in the sixth and lead 8-2. Clayton Basgall had four RBIs with a solo homer to open the game and a three-run triple in the fourth. Layne Downing hit a solo homer in the seventh. Cameron Klaus takes the loss in relief, allowing eight runs, two earned, on four hits in one inning.

The Eagles are now 5-6. They host Great Bend on Tuesday.

Zgardowski Leads Larks Past El Dorado

Larks BSB-RodriguezJason Zgardowski allowed just three singles over seven innings and wins his Hays Larks debut Saturday night in a 7-0 victory over the El Dorado Broncos. The win is the fourth straight for the Larks and improves them to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the Jayhawk League. The Broncos drop their second straight and fall to 5-2 and 3-2 in the Jayhawk League.

Zgardowski, a sophomore from Midland (Tex.) CC, walked four over the first 2 1/3 innings then settled down striking out five of the next seven he faced. He finished with eight strikeouts. Ian Bentley and DJ Carr both pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the shutout.

The Larks scored single runs in the second and third to grab a 2-0 lead. They added two in the fifth on Zair Koeimann’s two-out two-run double to right field. Ty Gilmore’s double in the sixth scored Elvin Rodriguez to push the lead to 5-0. Gilmore drove in two more runs with a two-out single in the seventh.
