Ellis, Ness City, Trego and LaCrosse Golf Qualifies for State

The Ellis boys golf team finished second and Ness City third at Monday’s Ellis 2A regional at the Ellis Golf Club. Both qualify for the 2A state tournament along with tournament winner Oberlin which will be held at the Morah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City on Monday, May 20.

The Railers Skylar Tebo wins the individual title, shooting a 72, one stroke ahead of Oberlin’s Kelly Brown. Tyler Walters of Ellis finished fourth with an 82 and Josh Tway was 12th with an 89.

Trego won their own 1A regional at the Big Creek Golf Course. The Golden Eagles shot a 332, 45 shots ahead of Rawlins County. Cameron Staples shot a 79 to finish second.

LaCrosse finishes third at their own Sand Greens Regional to qualify, winning a tiebreaker over Sylvan-Lucas. Derrick Depperschmidt shot a 78 to finish third. The Sand Greens state tournament is at the Tipton Oaks Golf Course in Tipton.

Holub and Vaupel Earn All-Region Honors

Fort Hays State’s Maddie Holub was named to the Daktronics All-Region team on Monday.

Holub, who was the MIAA Pitcher and Player of the Year was named Region Pitcher of the Year and a First Team selection at Pitcher. Holub finished the season 29-4 with a 1.03 ERA.

FHSU’s Amanda Vaupel was a Second Team All-Region selection in the outfield. Vaupel finished the year hitting .339 with 47 runs batted in and six homeruns.

The Tigers finished the season 47-12 with a loss to Central Oklahoma in the Central Regional-1 title game.

Tigers Season Ends in Regional Final Loss to Central Oklahoma

For a second straight day, Central Oklahoma drove Maddie Holub out of the game in the first inning. Sunday, they hit Holub for four runs, one earned, on three hits, knocking the Tiger ace out with one out in the first and beat the 10th-ranked Tigers 7-1 to win the Central Regional-1 championship at Tiger Stadium. The 19th-ranked Bronchos improve to 45-11 and advance to next weekend’s Super Regional where they will host Winona State who on the Central Regional-2 Tournament in Mankato, Minn. The Tigers end their season 47-12.

Central Oklahoma’s Kalynn Schrock (28-6) moved to 3-0 in the tournament, holding the Tigers to one run on three hits, striking out six and walking one.

Fort Hays State scored their lone run in the sixth when Maddie Holub reached on a throwing error, allowing Bianca Adame to score. Kellsi Olsen was thrown out at the plate on an Adame single for the first out of the inning.

Holub ends her outstanding career at FHSU with a 77-31 record in the circle with a career ERA under 2.00.

Tigers Advance To Regional Final on Holub’s Game-Winning Home Run

Maddie Holub hit a first-pitch fastball over the left field wall. The three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Fort Hays State softball team to a 5-2 come-from-behind win over Minot State and a spot in Sunday’s title game against Central Oklahoma at 1pm. FHSU (47-11) will need to beat the Bronchos twice to advance to next weekend’s Super Regional.

The Tigers grabbed the early lead with a run in the first on Courtney Dobson’s single to right field. Dobson doubled to open the seventh inning and scored the tying run on a Danie Brinkmann single to center.

Game Highlights

The Beavers (41-11) grabbed a 2-1 lead on Tiffany Freisen’s two-run homer in the fourth. It was the last hit Holub would allow the rest of the game, retiring 11 of the final 14 batters with three walks.

Holub picks up her 29th win of the season allowing two runs on two hits, striking out 12 and walking four. Courtney Dobson had three hits and Jenna Lang added two.

FHSU Softball Loses to Central Oklahoma; Falls to Elimination Round

No. 19 Central Oklahoma erupted for nine runs in the first inning and defeat the Fort Hays State Tigers 11-3 in five innings in the semifinals of the Central Regional-1 Tournament at Tiger Stadium in Hays Saturday afternoon. The loss drops FHSU (46-11) to the losers bracket where they will play either Emporia State or Minot State at 6pm Saturday. The Bronchos (44-11) move on to to the championship game Sunday at 1pm.

UCO’s Ally Dziadula tripled off Maddie Holub to open the bottom of the first. It was the Bronchos first hit off of Hulub, who no-hit them in the MIAA Tournament one week ago. Holub would not survive the first inning, allowing a season-high eight runs (four earned ) on four hits with one walk and no strikeouts.

All told, the Bronchos score nine runs on five hits and were aided by two Tiger errors in the first frame. They would add another run in the second then one in the fourth on a Tori Collet home run.

Game Highlights

The Tigers got on the board in the third when Jenna Lang scored from third on a double steal. They would get two in the fifth when Maddie Holub was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The second run came across on a passed ball. Fort Hays State left a runner at third when Danie Brinkmann struck out the end the game.

UCO’s Kalynn Schrock allowed one earned run on three hits and picks up the win.

HHS Baseball Splits at Junction City

The Hays High baseball team split their regular season finale in Junction City Friday. The Indians fall 1-0 in the opener but come back to take the second game 12-1. They end the regular season 15-5.

Game 1: Junction City 1, Hays 0
The Blue Jays scored an unearned run in the second inning for the only score of the game. The Indians were held to three singles in the game. Hayden Hutchison allowed just two hits over six innings and takes the loss.

Game 2: Hays 12, Junction City 1
After being held scoreless for the first nine innings 0f the doubleheader, the Indians scored a run in the third to tie the game 1-1. They blew it open with six in the fourth highlighted by Layne Downing’s three-run triple. Downing also had a double in the game. Cade Parker picks up the complete game victory, allowing an unearned run on two hits, walking five and striking out nine.

HHS Softball Sweeps Central

The Hays High softball team ends their regular season with a doubleheader sweep at Salina Central Friday. The Indians score five in the top of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and win game one 7-4. They win game two by run-rule 12-1 in five innings. Shea Briggs went 8-for-8 in the two games, driving in three and scoring four runs to lead the offense. The Indians improve to 12-8 on the season.

Hays High scored five in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie. Shea Briggs two-run single gave the Indians the lead. Briggs went 5-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Madison Prough picks up the win in the circle, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits, walking four and striking out one.

Game 2: Hays 12, Salina Central 1, 5 innings
The Indians struck for three in the first then scored five in the third. They added two in fourth and fifth for the run-rule victory. Katelyn Schumacher went 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Shea Briggs went 3-for-3 and RBI and two runs scored. Kaylie Schoendaller had two hits including a two-run homer and drove in four. Jenna Luebbers allowed one unearned run on four hits for the win.

Tigers Defeat Emporia State for First NCAA Tourney Win

Danie Brinkmann’s two-out single drove in two runs to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth and lift the No. 10 Fort Hays State softball team to a 5-3 victory over Emporia State in the opening round of the NCAA II Central Regional-1 at Tigers Stadium Friday evening. Brinkmann’s heriocs came after the Hornets intentionally walked Maddie Holub to load the bases.

The Tigers, who pick up their first ever NCAA Tournament win, improve to 46-10 and advance to the semifinals where they will play MIAA regular season champ Central Oklahoma (43-11) at 1pm Saturday. The Bronchos defeated Minot State 2-0 in their first-round game. The Hornets and Beavers meet in an elimination game Saturday at 3:30pm.

The Tigers rallied three different times to tie the game. Paxton Duran’s two-out bases loaded walk tie the game 1-1 in the first. Tori Beltz singled with two outs in the third, scoring Brinkmann to tie the game 2-2. After the Hornets scored a run in the fifth, Paxton Duran’s two-out single to center field scored Holub knot the score at 3-3.

Hays High Boys Win WAC Track and Field Championship, HHS Girls 3rd

Hays High boys win their fourth straight Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship under coach Ryan Cornelsen Thursday in Dodge City. The Indians win four individual events and one relay led by Emilio Mitchell who took first in the 100 and 200 meters. Adam Deterding finished first in the high jump and Cade Sharp won the shot put. They also win the 4×800 relay.

The Hays High girls finished third, winning three events. Wendy Zimmerman the triple jump, Audra Schmeidler the shot put and Mattison Schaefli the javelin.

HHS Girls’ Soccer Ends Regular Season with a Tie

The Hays High girls’ soccer team closed out their regular season with a 2-2 tie at Salina Central Thursday. The Mustangs scored two goals in the first two minutes of the second half to take the lead but the Indians tie it on a Taylor Herman goal in the 60th minute.

The two would be scoreless the rest of regulation and through the two overtime periods.

April Johnson scored the Indians first goals two minutes into the match.

Hays ends the regular season 13-2-1. The Indians will host a first-round regional match Tuesday at 4:30pm.

TMP Baseball Splits in Colby

The TMP-Marian baseball team split their regular season finale in Colby Thursday. The Monarchs lose game one 10-9 then came back to take game two 13-10.

TMP-Marian ends the regular season 14-6 and will be the No. 3 seed for their regional and play Lakin Tuesday at 4:30 in Lyons. You can hear the game on KAYS (1400-AM) and online at Hays Post.

FHSU’s Johnson Named All-MIAA; Five Receive Honorable Mention Honors

Fort Hays State had one First-Team selection and five honorable mention picks on the All-MIAA baseball team released Thursday. Designated hitter Horace Johnson was named to the First-Team after hitting .336 with nine double, nine home runs and 36 runs batted in.

Outfielder Jordan Miller and Clayton Garland were honorable mention picks along with second baseman Chris Santoscoy and starting pitcher Tayler Davis. Ryan Busboom, an All-American a year ago, is an honorable mention pick as a Utility Player.
