The dates and times of the best-of-three opening round series of the MIAA Baseball Championship Tournament between Fort Hays State and Missouri Western has been altered due to weather forecasted for St. Joseph, Mo. on Thursday. The teams will now meet in game one on Friday at 3 pm. Game two is now slated for 1 pm on Saturday and the third game, if necessary, will be at 1 pm on Sunday.

MIAA Softball Tourney Openers Moved, Tiger Softball Drops in Rankings
Due to the weather forecasted for Overland Park, Kan. on Thursday, the MIAA Softball Championship Tournament will now begin on Friday at 2 pm. All teams are still slated to play two games on Friday, with the second starting at 4 pm. Games on Saturday are now slated to begin at 11 am and the championship is slated to begin at 9 am on Sunday. The format remains double elimination.
Fort Hays State plays Pittsburg State to open the tournament on Friday at 2 pm and then will play either Missouri Western or Truman at 4 pm. Catch the games with Jonathan Zweygardt on KAYS.
The Fort Hays State softball team is ranked No. 15 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, released on Wednesday (May 1). Fort Hays State moves down four spots from No. 11 last week after going 3-1 this past week in conference play. The Tigers enter the MIAA Tournament at 41-9 overall, the first 40-win season in FHSU softball history.
Fort Hays State is one of two schools from the MIAA referenced in the poll. Central Oklahoma, the MIAA regular season champion, moved up to No. 12 in the rankings this week after going 4-0 last week. The Bronchos were No. 21 in the poll last week. Missouri Western received votes for the poll once again.
Within the Central Region, Southeastern Oklahoma State remains the highest ranked team in the nation, up to No. 2 this week from No. 3 last week. Minnesota State-Mankato is also in this week’s poll at No. 23. Minnesota-Duluth and Winona State received votes. Click on the photo to the left for a closer look at the rankings.
HHS Girls’ Soccer Wins Again
The Hays High girls’ soccer team picked up their second win in as many days, blanking McPherson 2-0 Tuesday at the Hays High field.
The Indians got a goal from Lacey Pfannenstiel on an assist from April Johnson and McPherson added an own goal off a hard shot from Megan Bird.
The Indians improve to 12-2. They are back home tomorrow against Dodge City at 4pm.
Monarch Baseball Splits at Larned
The TMP-Marian baseball team split their doubleheader in Larned Tuesday. The Monarchs dropped the opener 7-6 but came back to win game two 6-2.
The Monarchs have won 11 of their last 13 and are 11-5 on the year. They are off until Monday when they host Ellis in a makeup doubleheader.
HHS Golfers 2nd at Mariah Hills, TMP-Marian 4th
The Hays High Boys golf team earned a 2nd place finish on a hot windy Mariah Hills golf course on Tuesday.
Host Dodge City shot a 290 to take first place.
Hays High shot a 323 and Maize High School with 327 was 3rd. TMP-Marian was 4th with 342 followed by Garden City, Wichita Northwest, Great Bend, Wichita East, Liberal, and Wichita North.
Hays had two earn individual medals.
Peyton Ruder’s 79 was good for 7th and Senior Ryan Unruh was 8th with an 80. TMP-Marian’s Kade Megaffin also shot 80 and finished 10th

HHS Girls Soccer Defeats Garden City
The Hays High girls soccer team improved their record to 11-2 and 7-0 in the Western Athletic Conference with a 2-0 win at Garden City.
Alexa Brull and April Johnson both scored a goal for the Indians and Johnson also added an assist.
The Indians host McPherson on Thursday.
TMP Baseball Sweeps Russell
The TMP-Marian baseball improved their record to 10-4 this season with a doubleheader sweep of Russell yesterday winning the first game 12-2 in five innings and the second game 11-6.
Cameron Brin earned the win in the first game and Ryan Shippers picked up the win in game number two.
The Monarchs have now won 10 of their last 11 games.
The Monarchs are back in action this afternoon at Larned.

FHSU’s McPhail MIAA Field Athlete of the Week
Fort Hays State’s Makayla McPhail has been named the MIAA Field Athlete of the Week. McPhail improved upon her automatic national qualifying mark in the javelin at the Ollie Isom Invitational in El Dorado, Kan. She won the event with a throw of 154′ 7″. She threw 10 feet longer than the closest competitor and topped a field of 10 athletes.
She currently ranks third on the national performance list and has the top mark of any MIAA athlete in this event.The junior javelin thrower is a native of Liberal, Kan. where she competed at Liberal High School.

Hole in One Nets Gift to FHSU Athletics
Clayton Cox hit a hole in one on #18 at Smoky Hill Country Club on Friday during the annual Jim and Blake McGuire Scholarship Scramble.
Instead of buying the customary drinks for everyone, Cox gave the FHSU Athletic Department a check for $500. Cox lives in Norton and played on the team with Chris Brown, Chris Hipp and John Ruder.
Tigers Hold Final Spring Scrimmage
The Fort Hays State defense picked off two passes to highlight the Spring Scrimmage at Lewis Field Saturday morning. It marked the end of spring practice for the Tigers. There was no scoring of game clock in the scrimmage format.
Stephen Marcotte and Nate Lindsey both intercepted quarterback Traveon Albert. Daniel Lindsey also returned a punt for a touchdown.
The Tigers open their season at home September 5th against Emporia State.
