Fort Hays State senior softball player Maddie Holub swept the MIAA Softball Athlete of the Week awards for Tuesday (Mar. 12) as she was named Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week. She helped FHSU to a 6-2 record on the team’s trip to Florida this past week, which included two wins over nationally ranked opponents.

Holub had a huge week at the plate in Fort Hays State’s eight games in Florida. She batted .464 with five home runs, three doubles, a triple, and 10 RBI with with eight runs scored, slugging 1.179 for the week. All five of her home runs came in a six-game stretch at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. After posting a shutout win as a pitcher against No. 11 Tampa by a score of 1-0 to start the week, she had a double and scored Fort Hays State’s only run in the second game of the doubleheader with Tampa. Her bat really came to life in the six-game stretch at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. Against Post University, her two-run home run in the fourth broke a scoreless tie as FHSU went on to win 3-0. She helped her own cause as a pitcher in a 1-0 in-region win against University of Mary, delivering the only run of the game with a RBI single in the fifth. With FHSU trailing 3-0 early to St. Anselm, she triggered a three-run fourth with a solo home run and FHSU went on to win 5-4 in eight innings. Against Wayne State, she put FHSU on the board in the first with a solo home run as FHSU picked up a big in-region win against Wayne State (Neb.), 2-1 in eight innings. She had her biggest game against #24 Winona State, going 4-for-4 with a pair of two-run home runs in a 12-2 in-region win. She was just a double short of the cycle in that game. In the week’s finale against Grand Valley State, she drove home the only run of the game for FHSU with a RBI single.

Meanwhile in the pitching circle, Holub improved to 7-0 overall on the season by going 4-0 for FHSU in Florida this past week. She had four complete games and averaged 11.5 strikeouts per seven innings and 1.6 per inning. She was the winner for FHSU over two nationally ranked opponents, No. 11 Tampa on its home field and No. 24 Winona State. She did not allow an earned run in her first 40 innings of the season until allowing just one against Wayne State in a 2-1 win in eight innings. Against Tampa, she won a match-up between two of the premier strikeout pitchers in Division II with 11 strikeouts and just three hits allowed, while her counterpart Kayla Cox had 19 strikeouts in the game, but FHSU won 1-0. She also won 1-0 against University of Mary with 12 strikeouts and just two hits allowed. Against Wayne State, she struck out 10 in an eight-inning game. Against No. 24 Winona State, she struck out 13, allowing four hits and just two runs in a 12-2 win. Holub has reached double figures in strikeouts in all seven of her starts this year and averages 12.2 per seven innings. Her season ERA currently sits at 0.41.

Tiger Baseball vs. NWMSU Moved to Wednesday

FHSU-BSB-Larks ParkThe Fort Hays State baseball doubleheader against Northwest Missouri State has been moved from Tuesday to Wednesday at 2 pm at Larks Park in Hays.

Fort Hays State will play at home for the first time since February 19, due to the winter weather throughout the Midwest over the past few weeks.

The Tigers enter the doubleheader at 8-7 overall, 5-6 in the MIAA.

FHSU Left Out of NCAA Tournament Field

FHSU-MBB-TeamEven though they were co-champions of the regular season in the MIAA, the Fort Hays State men’s basketball team was left out of the eight-team Central Regional field of the 64-team NCAA Tournament. The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference received four bids, while the MIAA and Great American Conference received two each.

Fort Hays State finished 20-8 overall, but mysteriously fell from eighth in the region rankings on February 20 to ninth the next week, to out of the top 10 entering the MIAA Tournament. Advancing to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament was not enough to get the Tigers in this year, even though they reached 20 wins in a season for the seventh time under head coach Mark Johnson, which ties for most in school history with Bill Morse.

Central Missouri, co-champion of the regular season with FHSU, earned the automatic bid from the conference by winning the MIAA Tournament. Northeastern State received the other bid, even though it finished 19-8 overall and tied for third in the MIAA regular season. The Riverhawks lost in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament.

Most baffling is the fact that two at-large bids were handed to a pair of 11-loss teams, Upper Iowa from the NSIC and Arkansas Tech from the Great American Conference. Arkansas Tech finished in a three-way tie for the GAC conference regular season title, but the champions of that conference were 13-7. FHSU and Central Missouri were 13-5 in conference play. Arkansas Tech had three non-conference losses outside its conference tournament, while FHSU had just two. All of Fort Hays State’s losses were to teams over .500, most being well over .500.

FHSU Women’s Run at NCAA Tournament Comes Up Just Short

FHSU-WBB-HuddleFort Hays State’s run at obtaining a NCAA Tournament bid came up just short as the Lady Tigers were left out of the eight-team Central Regional field for the 64-team NCAA Tournament. Even with a 22-7 record overall, 20-7 in Division II play, it was not enough to get the Lady Tigers into a very tough regional field.

Washburn, Central Missouri and Emporia State will represent the MIAA in the tournament field. Three teams from the NSIC and two from the GAC also will compete at the regional. The Lady Tigers made a run to the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament, losing to Central Missouri in overtime, but it was not enough to obtain an at-large bid. Emporia State is the only team in the Central Regional field with more than six losses, but got in with the automatic bid by winning the MIAA Tournament.

The 22 wins this season for FHSU were most for the program since 2004-05. It also marked the most wins for FHSU in a season under fifth-year head coach Tony Hobson. That passes the mark of 20 wins set last season. The Lady Tigers had two All-MIAA selections in first-teamer Kate Lehman and third-teamer Kate Edward. Lehman was also named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year and landed on the MIAA All-Defensive Team.

Postgame News Conference Segment 2

After a slow start, the Lady Tigers went on a 16-2 run to take a 12-point lead with 13:37 to play in the first half. The Jennies answer with a 33-11 run over the next 10 minutes to go up 12 with 3:26 to play. FHSU finished the half on an 11-2 run to pull within three at the half.

Game Highlights

Fort Hays State would get as close as one early in the second, only to fall behind by 10. They would rally to take the lead back on a Kate Edwards three-point play. Back-to-back Traci Keyser three-pointers put them up three at 72-69. Missed free throws prevented them from building the lead any bigger.

The Jennies had a chance to win it in the final 10 seconds. BreAnna Lewis hit the front end but missed the second of two free throws to force overtime. UCM outscored the Lady Tigers 12-3 in the extra period.

Kaiameka Brown and Kate Edwards both scored 18 points to lead the Tigers. It’s a career-high for Brown. Edwards added 10 rebounds and dished out eight assists. Kate Lehman scored 17 points and had nine rebounds and eight blocks before fouling out.

Keuna Flax scored 23 and had 15 rebounds and Nicole Caddell added 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Jennies who avenge a 45-point regular season loss to the Lady Tigers in Hays back in early December.

Northwest Missouri State Rallies to Defeat FHSU in MIAA Tournament Semifinals

The loss snaps a three-game win streak and drops them to 20-8 on the season. The Bearcats avenge two regular season losses to the Tigers and improve to 21-9.

The Tigers moved to 22-6 overall with the win, while Northeastern State dropped to 19-8 overall.
