Second Half Runs Lifts Lady Tigers to Third-Straight Win

FHSU-WBB-EdwardsThe Fort Hays State Tigers used a 21-5 second half run to go up 12 and knock off Northwest Missouri State 65-53 Wednesday night at Gross Coliseum. The win is the Lady Tigers third straight and improves them to 15-5 overall and 7-5 in the MIAA. The Bearcats drop 11-9 and 5-7 in the conference.

Northwest used a 13-4 run to go up seven in the first half. Fort Hays State answered with a 9-2 run to tie and trailed by one at the half, 26-25.
Lady Tiger Highlights 2-6-13

The Lady Tigers, who had been outrebounded in the last four games, outrebounds the Bearcats by 19 and had 16 offensive boards.

Kate Lehman led three led three Lady Tigers in double-figures with 19 points. Kate Lehman added 17 points and 13 rebounds while Tera Inglesbee scored 12.

Notes: Tyler is a standout player on the football field and the basketball court.  In football he recorded 2,072 receiving yards, 21 touchdowns, 220 total tackles, 10 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, and 5 fumble recoveries.  Bacon’s football honors include 2A-8 offensive player of the year, 3 time All-District, and District 2A-8 wide receiver of the year. He has also earned 2 time All-Conference, defensive player of the year, and 2 time Coca-Cola All-Tournament team in basketball.

Abe Clinch

Notes: In Abe’s senior season he passed for 1,677 yards with 16 touchdown and completing 102 out of 171 passes. On the ground, Abe rushed 101 times for 504 yards and 10 touchdowns.  He led KCHS to a 10-1 record as a senior and state runner up in 2011.  His career stats are an impressive 233 completions with 395 attempts, 3,680 passing yards, 32 passing touchdowns, 181 rushes for 844 yards and 17 touchdowns. Abe was camp MVP at UNK last summer.  Clinch’s honors include All-State honorable mention, 2nd team All-Hub region, All-District QB, Academic All-State, Passing leader All-Hub (yards per game, completions, total pass yards), honor roll, honor society, FCA President, and President of S.O.D.A. (Students Opposed to Drugs and Alcohol).

Mason Dickey

Jalen Hill

Notes: Hill had 43 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 1 fumble recovery last season at Victor Valley College in California.  He earned 2nd team all-conference for the Rams.  During Jalen’s senior year at Hillsborough High in Tampa FL. he registered 76 total tackles on defense, caught seven passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, Hill ran the ball eight times for 21 yards.

Rasheed Hobbs

Notes: Hobbs had 94 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 3 forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.  Rasheed’s impressive senior year earned him All-State honors in Missouri. He was defensive player of the week for 4 weeks in the 2012 season.  Hobbs helped his team to a Missouri State Championship while becoming 1st team All-Conference in Suburban Big 6, Kansas City Star All-Metro team, and Examiner All-Area team.

Jacob Holloway

Notes: Jacob recorded nearly 1,000 yards passing, 19 total touchdowns, 1 interception, and 1,030 yards rushing as the Manhattan High quarterbacks.  Along with the game winning statistics, Holloway was recently named All-League, All-State, All-Flint Hills, student of the month, K-Man student of the week, and Junior athlete of the week.  He has also lettered in Track and basketball.

Notes: Javonta is an All-Conference wide receiver who had 41 receptions for 579 yards and 6 touchdowns in his senior season at Liberal High School.  On defense, J.J. had 20 tackles, 2 sacks, and 2 fumble recoveries.  He also plays basketball where he has been named player of the week twice and  competes in track for the redskins.

Daniel Lindsey

Notes: Starting his college career at Eastern Arizona, Daniel had 12 tackles, 10 of them for loss.  At Inkster High School Daniel recorded 6 interception, 69 tackles, and 14 pass break-ups as a senior.  Daniel was all-state honorable mention, 2nd team region, and all-league 1st team.  Among other honors, Daniel was named to the Detroit News All-Metro West second team,  Ranked the 29th player in the state by Rivals.com,  Made the “Hot 11” at the Rivals.com Midwest Elite Camp, and a two-star recruit and the 158th ranked running back in the country byScout.com.

Nathan Lindsey

Notes: Nathan comes to Fort Hays State from Eastern Arizona where he recorded 12 tackles and 1 interception.  Prior to his stint at Arizona, he was a Viking at Inkster High School in Michigan.  As a senior Nathan had 2 interceptions, 79 tackles where 13 of them were for loss, 2 forced fumbles, 5 touchdowns, and 342 all-purpose yards.  Nathan’s honors include being Ranked the 33rd player in the state by Rivals.com, and 28th in the state by scout.com,  Two-star recruit and 163rd ranked running back in the country by Scout.com,  Made the “Hot 11” at theRivals.com Midwest Elite Camp,  All-state honorable mention, all region, and all-league 1st team.

Notes: Played two seasons at Arizona Western.  During the 2011 season, Tomasi made 54 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, eight sacks, recovered two fumbles and returned an interception for touchdown… earned second team All-ACCAC and All-Western States honors… had 43 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and a sack as a freshman. At Oceanside High School he was named first team All State, San Diego Section Defensive Player of the Year, first team All-CIF, first team All-North County, and Defensive MVP for the Valley League… a Rivals.com 4-star recruit, he originally signed with Oregon State out of high school… also recruited by San Diego State, Texas A&M and BYU.

Notes: 4A 4 All-District Offensive Lineman with 37 pancakes in his senior season as Pirate at Poteau High School. He was a 3 year starter for Poteau and a 14 Foundation camp MVP in Wister, OK. Shankle is a regional champion and state qualifier in the shot put, and a regional runner up and state qualifier in the discus. Trevor has been on the Principal’s Honor Roll for 3 years, and Superintendents his senior year.

Nate Simpson

Notes: Nate had 27 tackles, 9 pass break ups, and 1 fumble recovery as a corner back at Centennial High School.  He was named 2nd team All-Region in football, and region champion in the 110 and 300 hurdles, State Runner-Up and Region Champ in the 4x400m, and placed at state in both the 110 and 300 hurdles.

In 2011 James was 1st team All-league, 1st team All-Conference, and All-State honorable mention.  His senior year, Sullivan was awarded 1st team All-league RB, 1st team All-Conference RB, All-State honorable mention, 1st team All League WR, and 1st team All-Conference WR.

Notes: After becoming an all-state defensive lineman at Rose Hill High School in 2010, Walther went on to assist Butler CC win back to back conference championships.  With 23 tackles as a sophomore, Brandon helped the Butler to become the conference leader in scoring defense.

Luke Wright

Notes: A 4 year letter winner at North Platte, Luke finished up his high school career as a 2 time All-Conference, 2 time All-Area, All-State honorable mention, 3 time Academic All-State, and 2 time Academic All-Conference football player.  Luke also plays basketball where he has been named Academic All-State 2 times as well as Academic All-Conference.  Off the field, he is a member of the National Honor Society and has been a Student Council officer for 4 years. Luke will participate in Nebraska Shrine Bowl this summer.

TMP’s Heather Ruder Signs with Kansas State

TMP’s Heather Ruder signed a letter of intent with Kansas State University this afternoon to run track and cross country.

Ruder helped the lady Monarchs track and field team finish runners-up in class 3A the past two seasons and she is also the three-time defending champion in the 800 and 1600 meters runs. She was also the champion in the 3200 meters her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Ruder was also a standout cross county runner for the Monarchs, winning the 3A individual championship as a sophomore. She finished 2nd as a freshman and finished third her junior and senior season.

Two Indians Sign For College Football

David Cardinal and Emilio Mitchell each signed their letter of intent today to play college football.

Cardinal, an 5A all-state selection, inked with Pittsburg State University.  Cardinal, the two-time WAC player of the year, rushed for over 2800 yards in his career scoring 38 rushing touchdowns.  He finished with back to back 1,000 plus yard seasons for Hays High as a starter the past two seasons.  Cardinal is slotted as a running back for the Gorillas.

Mitchell, an 5A all-state selection, signed with Hutchinson Community College.  Mitchell hopes to move on to division one football after his time with the Dragons.  KU has already shown interest in Mitchell at either linebacker or safety.  Mitchell ended his two year career at Hays High with more than 115 career tackles.

TMP Sweeps Larned

TMP picked up consecutive wins for the first time on the season winning 52-37 in Larned.  The Lady Monarchs led by one point at halftime and maintained that lead going into the 4th quarter leading 34-33.  TMP poured it on in the 4th outscoring Larned 18-4.

Melissa Pfeifer led the Lady Monarchs with 16 points who improve to 4-11 on the season and 3-2 in the Mid Central Activities Association.  TMP has won 3 out of their last 4 games and will play at Scott City on Friday Night.

Shane Zimmerman led four Monarchs in double figures with 16 points to help TMP finish the season sweep of Larned on Tuesday night.  TMP looked to be on cruise control heading into the 3rd Quarter with a 15 point lead but the 2nd Half would be anything but a cruise as Larned pulled to within one point heading into the 4th Quarter.  The Indians were able to tie the game a couple of times in the 4th but TMP was able to hit key free throws down the stretch to pull away.

Along with Zimmerman Kameron Schmidt added 14 points, Cameron Fouts 13 points and Kade Megaffin chipped in 12.  TMP will be at Scott City on Friday night.

Hays High Suffers Sweep to Salina Central

IndianHays High 36 – Salina Central 69 (Ladies)

Salina Central started the game on a 17-2 run and never looked back as High High fell 69-36 on Tuesday night.  Hays cut the lead down to 11 at the end of the first quarter, but an 10-0 run to start the second quarter put Hays away for good.  Taylor Herman led the Indians with 8 points.

Hays shot 15/45 from the field while Central was 27/60 and made 9/21 three point shots.  Salina Central also turned the ball over just five times.

Hays falls to 6-9 on the season with their first three game losing streak of the year.  Salina Central is 10-5.

Hays High 40 – Salina Central 45 (Boys)

Hays High led by as many as five and Salina Central never by more than six as the Mustangs beat Hays High 45-40 on Tuesday night.

The Indians led 13-8 early in the second quarter which Central answered with a 9-0 run to grab a 17-13 lead.  During that run the Indians Jordan Windholz suffered a knee injury.  Windholz had made his first start of the season for Kyler Niernberger is was out due to illness.  Hays rallied back to get within one at 19-18 at half time.

Central jumped out first in the second half with a 7-2 run grabbing the biggest lead of the night at six, 26-20.  Hays responded back to get with in one and then trailed 32-30 after three quarters thanks to a Derrick Bixenman three at the buzzer.  That three spurred on a 8-1 run to give the Indians their final lead at 35-33.  Central outscored Hays 12-5 rest of the way.

Two big stats stood out on the night.  Hays’ 19 turnovers and the Indians being out shot 19-3 at the free throw line.  Hays was 1 of 3 while Central hit 12 of 19.  Both teams made seven treys on the night.  Hays shot 41% (16-39), Central shot 35% (13-37).

Hays was led by Lane Clark who scored 12.

Both Hays and Salina Central are now 10-5 on the season.  Central now owns the head-to-head tiebreaker if Hays and Central should tie for the top seed at sub-state.

The Indians are back at home this Friday to take on Liberal.

Eagle’s Dustin Armbruster Named Oscar Stauffer Award Winner

DSC00125Eagle Radio’s Dustin Armbruster has been named this year’s Oscar Stauffer Award winner. The Kansas State High School Activities Association presents the award each year to the radio Sportscaster of the Year.

Armbruster has been the voice of the Hays High Indians since 2008 and also provides color commentary for Fort Hays State football and basketball broadcasts.

The WaKeeney native and graduate of Trego Community High School is the fifth winner of the award from Eagle Radio Hays, joining Bob Davis (1975, 1978) Wyatt Thompson (1989) Gerard Wellbrock (1996, 1997, 2000) and Mike Hammett (2011).

Nicholson Named MIAA Athlete of the Week for Second Time This Season

FHSU-MBB-NicholsonFort Hays State freshman Craig Nicholson was named the MIAA Men’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the second time this season on Monday, February 4 for his efforts last week in wins over Central Oklahoma and Missouri Southern. He was also named the Athlete of the Week on December 10.

Nicholson averaged 15 points, 11 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game last week for the Tigers. He had a pair of double-doubles in points and assists in Fort Hays State’s two wins at home. In the win over Central Oklahoma he had 15 points and a season-high 12 assists. The 12 assists tied for seventh most in a single game in FHSU history. Nicholson went 6-of-6 at the free throw line inside the final minute, the first four extending the FHSU lead from two to six points. In a win over Missouri Southern, Nicholson had four of his ten assists in the 17-2 run for FHSU that extended their two point lead to 17 points. He matched his point total from the game before with 15 points. He now has three double-doubles on the season.
