Monarchs Fall Twice to Ellinwood

GIRLS:  Ellinwood 74       TMP  64

Heather Ruder poured in a career high 30 points but it wasn’t enough as the TMP Lady Monarchs fell to 0-5 on the season.  A Ruder 3 to start the 4th Quarter put TMP up 59-58 but it would be the last time the Lady Monarchs would be in front.  They will travel to Victoria on Tuesday.

BOYS:   Ellinwood 61   TMP  54

TMP fell down by 12 midway through the 2nd Quarter Friday night and it looked like a blowout was on hand.  The Monarchs scratched back to within 6 at halftime and led 43-41 going into the 4th Quarter.  That would be the end of the celebration for TMP as the Eagles had to much down the stretch to get the win.  TMP is now 1-4 and will play at Victoria on Tuesday.

Lady Tigers Vault to No. 11 in National Rankings

The Fort Hays State women’s basketball team vaulted to No. 11 in the latest WBCA NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday (Dec. 11). The Lady Tigers, which now sit at 8-0 overall, jumped six spots for the second straight week after holding the No. 17 spot last week and the No. 23 spot in the previous week.

The No. 11 ranking is the highest national ranking ever for the FHSU women setting a new high for the third straight week. The only other year the Lady Tigers were ever ranked in the program’s NCAA history was in 1996-97 for two weeks at No. 25.

Fort Hays State is one of three teams from the MIAA in the national rankings this week. Washburn is the highest ranked team from the MIAA at No. 7 this week, up one spot from No. 8 last week. The Lady Blues, like the Lady Tigers, are still unbeaten overall. Pittsburg State, which was No. 3 a couple weeks ago, continued its slide down the poll to No. 18 this week after suffering its second loss of the season this past week.

Fort Hays State dispatched Central Missouri back out of the rankings with its 45-point win over the Jennies in Hays this past week. The Jennies were No. 23 in the nation last week. Following their loss to the Lady Tigers, the Jennies helped oust Emporia State from the rankings by defeating the Hornets in Warrensburg. However, Emporia State, which was No. 21 last week, lost earlier in the week to an unranked Northeastern State team before falling to Central Missouri.

Fort Hays State is one of 13 teams in the Top 25 this week that remains unbeaten overall for the season. The Lady Tigers currently have three one-loss teams sitting in front of them in the poll. The top seven teams in the country are all unbeaten.

Below is the Top 25 Poll for Tuesday, December 11, 2012.

FHSU’s Koehn MIAA Wrestler of the Week

Fort Hays State Derek Koehn has been named the MIAA’s Wrestler of the Week after going 3-1 for the week and was the champion of the Newman Invitational at 157 pounds on Sunday.

After a first round bye, Koehn won three straight matches to take his respective weight class. He opened with a 7-2 victory over Trent Robb of Neosho County Community College. Next he defeated Cory Dauphin of Central Oklahoma, the #7 ranked wrestler nationally at 157 pounds by a tight 3-2 margin. This avenged a 2-0 loss to Dauphin just two nights earlier in dual action with UCO. Koehn then knocked off the #3 ranked wrestler at 157 pounds in Ouachita Baptist’s Bobby Williams by a 2-1 margin to win his class. He is now 17-3 overall on the season.

The 157 pound junior is a native of Pittsburg, Kan. where he competed at Pittsburg High School.
