The Hays High Boys And Girls Both Win On Saturday
HAYS HIGH 59 KEARNEY 42 (boys)
After a thrilling overtime win to get into the Hays City Shootout championship game, the final game had much less drama as Hays High beat Kearney 59-42. There were four ties in the first quarter and tied at 11 after the first eight minutes. The Indians opened the second quarter on a 15-3 run to go up 26-14 and the Indians were never threatened rest of the way. Hays allowed just four first half field goals, but Kearney made 11 of 13 free throws to stay within eight points at the break.
The Indians allowed only two third quarter free throws and outscored Kearney 12-2. Hays shot 46% from the field and out rebounded the Bearcats by seven. Kearney made just nine field goals with five of them coming in the final five minutes of the game. Kearney went 5-25 behind the arc.
Brady Werth broke his career high for a second consecutive game dropping in 15 points. Jordan Windholz scored 10, all in the fourth quarter.
Nick Petz, Lane Clark, and Brady Werth were all named to the all-tournament team. Lane Clark was also named the Mikey Steinert Most Inspirational Player.
This was Kearney’s last appearance in the Hays City Shootout as the state of Nebraska will be doing all of the basketball scheduling.
HAYS HIGH 37 DESOTO 33 (girls)
The Hays High Lady Indians overcame a sluggish game to beat DeSoto in the third place game on Saturday afternoon during the Hays City Shootout. The Indians made just eight field goals and shot just 25 times in the game. But Hays was 21-27 from the free throw line and made 10 of 12 over the final three minutes of the game to seal the victory. The Indians never trailed in the game, but Kearney did tie the game with 3:2o remaining. No Lady Indian scored in double figures, however seven different players scored in the victory.
Hays moves to 2-1 to start the season. Their lone loss in the tournament was to Newton, who went on to beat Kearney in the title game.
Hays High will make their only road trip of the pre-Christmas schedule on Thursday as they travel to Colby in a rematch of the first round games. Tipoff is set for 6:00.
TMP/Colby Boys and Girls Split
The TMP boys picked up their first win of the season with a 43-33 victory over Colby in the seventh place game of the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout. The Monarchs trailed 11-8 after the 1st Quarter but led 22-20 at the half. It was nip and tuck the rest of the way for the Monarchs, leading by 3 after 3 Quarters and then finishing off Colby in the 4th Quarter.
Cameron Fouts led TMP in scoring with 11 points. Shane Zimmerman added 9 points to the Monarch cause. TMP will host Phillipsburg December 11th.
COLBY 33 TMP 24 (Girls)
The TMP Lady Monarchs dropped their 3rd straight game to open the season, losing to Colby 33-24. Heather Ruder paced TMP with 14 points, ending the 3 games at the shootout with 40 points. The TMP Girls will also host Phillipsburg on December 11th at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.
Hays Boys To Play For Championship, Girls For Third
The Hays High Indians split their championship semi-final games on Friday night at Hays High School.
The Lady Indians had problems shooting through out the night but trailed by just two points to Newton at half time after the score had been tied five different times in the second half. Hays trailed by as many at seven early in the third fourth quarter, but a Kaitlyn Schumacher three point play brought Hays within four points. It was the closest Hays would get all night as Nnewton went on a 7-0 run to grab their first double digit lead of the night and win 43-31. Schumacher led the Indians in scoring with nine, Janae Gagnon added eight.
Hays shot just 29% from the floor and made just 2 of 13 three point field goal attempts. Newton shot 43% in the victory.
The Hays Lady Indians will play DeSoto for third place at 2:00. Both teams are 1-1.
Last year Lane Clark hit a three pointer at the buzzer to beat Newton 42-39 in the fourth place game of the Hays City shoot out. Early on it looked like there would be no heroics needed as the Indians led 14-5 early in the second quarter. But 17 first half turnovers combined with Newton making 8 of the final 12 shots of the first half including a three at the buzzer put Newton up 23-21 at half time. The Indians missed several point blank shots in the third quarter to keep the game close. Hays trailed by ten with 7:30 left to go in the game and after getting the game with in seven Hays couldn’t score on three consecutive possessions.
Still down 44-35 with less than 3:00 minutes to go, the Indians poured in eight consecutive points on a Brady Werth put back, while Layne Downing and Lane Clark each hit a three making the score 44-43 with one minute remaining. Hays again trailed 47-43 after three consecutive Newton free throws. Nick Petz knocked down his third three of the game to get with in one at 47-46. Again Austin Krogmeier answered at the free throw line with two more making the score 49-46 with 13 seconds remaining. Newton used the foul they had to give with 1.9 seconds remaining…just enough time for more Lane Clark heroics. The ball was in-bounded to Kyler Niernberger who immediately found Clark for a floating three point shot that went in as the horn sounded.
Tied 49 in over time, the Indian’s Brady Werth scored four of the teams five points while Krogmeier missed a running three pointer that went half way around the rim before hopping out giving the Indians a 54-53 victory.
Brady Werth tallied his first career double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Nick Petz and Lane Clark each had three, three point field goals scoring 13 and 12 respectively. Each total was a career high in scoring.
Hays turned the ball over 27 times ans shot just 35% from the field in the overtime win.
Hays will play Kearney, NE in the championship at 7:30 on Saturday.

Hays City Shootout Gets A New Name

The 30th edition of the Hays City Shootout received a touching moment between the Hays High girls’ and boys first round games on Thursday night. The tournament was renamed The Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout in memory of Gerald Mitchell who was one of the driving forces behind the start of the tournament.
Mitchell passed away in June of 2012 and his wife Kathryn was on hand to receive a plaque in his honor.
Mitchell, a Osborne native, taught in Gorham and Plainville before landing in Hays. He taught in Hays from 1978 through 2005. Mitchell served as head coach for the girl’s basketball team and was also an excellent track coach. Overall Mitchell compiled over 300 wins in his basketball coaching career and athletes to the KSHSAA State Track meet 17 consecutive years.
