FHSU Men’s Soccer Climbs to No. 9 in NSCAA Poll

After a perfect 2-0 week, including a win over a top 25 team, the Fort Hays State men’s soccer team jumped to No. 9 in NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Men’s Poll released today (Sept. 25). The No. 9 ranking is the highest in the program’s short two-year history. FHSU was No. 15 in last week’s poll.

The Tigers, who are ranked for the fourth-straight week, went 2-0 last week to improve to 7-1 on the season and 3-0 in the MIAA. FHSU won in two overtimes, 3-2, against then-No. 20 Northeastern State.  Tomas Mares, who was named MIAA Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week, scored the game-winner in the second overtime. The Tigers then defeated Harding, 2-1, on Saturday.

In the Central Regional rankings, the Tigers continue to hold the top spot. No. 21 Lindenwood (5-1-2) moved to No. 2 and Northeastern (5-2) dropped to No. 3.

FHSU is one of two MIAA teams ranked this week. Lindenwood jumped into the rankings at No. 21, while Northeastern State, which was ranked No. 20 last week, fell out of the polls.

The Tigers welcome Lindenwood to Hays on Thursday for a 7pm match.

Mares Named MIAA Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

Tomas Mares garnered MIAA Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week honors, announced today (Sept. 25) by the MIAA office. Mares is the first Tiger to earn the honor in the programs short history in the MIAA.

Mares delivered the game winning goal in the second overtime against Northeastern State in a match-up of top 25 teams and the two top teams in the region. Just over a minute into the second overtime Mares controlled a free kick from Carlos Linares from midfield and fired near the top of the box to give the Tigers the win. It was Mares second goal of the game as the Tigers remain unbeaten in MIAA play. The 5-10 senior forward is a native of Tulsa, Okla. and transferred to FHSU after playing at NOC-Tonkawa and Tulsa Memorial High School.

Mares has started all eight games so far in 2012 and ties for the team lead in goals with five and points with 10. Daniel Peralta also has five goals on the season. Of his five goals, two have been game-winners, including the goal against NSU.

The No. 15 Tigers are 7-1 and lead the MIAA standings with a 3-0 record. FHSU continues MIAA play this week, hosting Lindenwood on Thursday (Sept. 27) and Southwest Baptist on Saturday (Sept. 29).

Game Highlights

Fort Hays State did a much better job of keeping its defense off the field by putting together time-consuming drives in the first quarter. They had the ball for 9:22 in the opening frame of the game to keep the high-powered Griffon offense off the field. Missouri Western scored a touchdown on its first drive of the game on a 19-yard pass from Travis Partridge to Kyle Knox and led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Fort Hays State freshman kicker Drew O’Brein pulled the Tigers within four at the 11:51 mark of the second quarter with a 48-yard field goal, the longest of his young college career. It also tied the eighth-longest field goal in FHSU history.

After the field goal, the Griffons put together a methodical 11-play drive that took 5:29 to push its lead to 14-3. Partridge found Tarrell Downing for a 17-yard touchdown pass with 6:18 remaining in the opening half.

The Tigers moved inside the Griffon 40-yardline three times in the second half, but every time fumbled the ball ending in turnovers. Missouri Western sealed the game with a 1-yard run for a touchdown by Partridge at the 11:32 mark of the fourth quarter, ending a 12-play, 81-yard drive.

Addie Brown led the Tiger rushing attack with 87 yards on 11 carries. Tarean Austin completed 17-of-30 passes for 112 yards and ran for 45 yards on 11 attempts. Grant Brown and Addie Brown each had three receptions.

Layton Hickel led the Tiger defense with 10 tackles. Aaron Burton, Basil Bandy, Austin Hubert and Tyler Richards and all had sacks in the game and Keke Paul had the lone Tiger interception. The Tigers held Missouri Western to 427 yards of total offense, the first opponent the Tigers have held under 500 yards this year.

Michael Hill, one of the top rushers in Division II, had 198 yards on the ground for the Griffons on 26 carries. Travis Partridge was 13-of-24 passing in the game with two touchdowns and a rushing touchdown to his credit. Mike Jordan and Marc Harrison led the Griffon defense with six tackles.

Fort Hays State goes on the road next week to Truman (3-1, 2-1 MIAA). The game is set for 1 pm on Saturday (Sept. 29) in Kirksville, Mo.

TMP Loses 3rd Straight

A sweet start for the TMP Monarch turned sour quickly as TMP fell to Ellsworth Friday Night, 50-35.  TMP led 7-0 late in the first quarter before the Bearcats answered with 22 straight points.  The Monarchs pulled back to within 7 late in the first half but Ellsworth tacked on 14 late points and led 36-15 at halftime.

The second half didn’t start much better as Ellsworth marched down the field and scored making it a 43-15 game.  TMP fought back and pulled to within eight points late in the 3rd Quarter but would not find the endzone again.  Trevor Miley capped off a career night with his 4th touchdown run of the game with under a minute to play to seal the game.

TMP drops to 1-3 on the season and hits the road next Friday to take on LaCrosse.  Ellsworth improves to 3-1 with their 3rd straight win and will face Beloit next Friday.

Hays High Edges Out Garden City 29-21

Hays High and Garden City essentially played two separate games on Friday night at Buffalo Stadium in Garden City.  In the first half defense prevailed as Hays scored the only seven points of the half.  Those seven points came after Garden City has second and goal from the one yard line but fumbled, which was recovered by Adam Deterding.  Hays used the turnover to start a 99 play drive that was finished off by a Emilio Mitchell six yard touchdown run.  Garden City also had a touchdown called back after a holding penalty in the first half.

While defense dominated the first half, the second half was all offense.  The teams combined to score on their first five drives to start the second half.  Garden City tied the game on a seven play seventy-five yard drive with 9:26 remaining the third.  Hays answered right back with a eight play sixty-four yard drive that ended with a Preston Wiegel one yard touchdown run.  Hays though missed the extra point to lead 13-7.  Garden City scored eleven plays later on a fourth down two yard touchdown pass from Greyson Tempel to Tanner Foley with just 1:47 remaining in the third to take a 14-13 lead.  It take just three plays to regain the lead on a sixty-six yard touchdown pass from Alex Delton to Adam Deterding who ran through a pass interference call that was declined.  Hays led 21-14 into the fourth when Garden City tied it up on a Tempel seven yard run…Garden City converted on four third down conversions and a fourth down on the that drive.

Tied at 21, it looked like Hays was about to again take the lead when Alex Delton fumbled at the three yard line with 4:54 remaining in the game.  Garden City though went just five plays when quarterback Greyson Temple was hit as he threw and the ball fluttered right into the hands of Emilio Mitchell for his first career interception.

Five plays later Alex Delton atoned for his fumble inside the three with a touchdown run from five yards out.  Hays converted on a two point conversion for the 29-21 score with thirty-0ne seconds remaining.  Garden City advanced the ball to mid-field but never got a shot at the endzone.

Hays moves to 3-1 and 2-0 in conference play.  Garden City falls to 2-2 and 1-1 in the WAC.

Hays returns home for homecoming against Wichita South.  Garden City looks for their first win at new Buffalo Field in their third try, this time against the Liberal Redskins.
