Hays High’s Lunsford and Hearld Named All-State

After finishing the season 20-3 and making back-to-back trips to the 5A state softball tournament the Hays High Softball team had two players named to the Softball Coaches Association 5A All-State Team.

Senior Paige Lunsford was named a first team infielder and Freshman Hannah Hearld was named a first team Utility player. Lunsford finished with a team high 11 homeruns and 42 RBI and was second to Hearld with a .543 batting average.

Hearld finished with a .586 batting average and drove in 36 RBI. Hearld also led the Indians with a 12-2 record, a 1.43 ERA and struck out 74 in 83 and 1/3 innings. Both Lunsford and Hearld were also selected to the First Team all Western Athletic Conference.

Big Inning Costs Larks in First Loss of the Season

For the first time all season, the wheels fell off for the Hays Larks. Up 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 8th, they give up 11 runs, 10 of them with two outs, and lose in El Dorado 11-5 for their first loss of the summer.

Justin Ziegler allowed just a 2nd inning single through the first seven innings, but gives up six runs on four hits in the 8th and takes the loss. He’s now 1-1.

Nebraska’s Austin Darby drove in three of the four runs for the Larks with a homer and an RBI single. He also doubled.

Claudio Valencia gave the Larks an early 2-0 lead with a two-run double in the 2nd.

The Larks (7-1, 4-1 Jayhawk League) are back at home Tuesday for a two-game series with Liberal in the first game of a 10-day, nine-game homestand.

Hays Eagles Win Finale At North Platte Tournament

The Hays Eagles American Legion baseball team wins the final three games at their tournament in North Platte, Nebraska and go 3-1 on the weekend.

They wrapped up play Sunday with a 17-1 rout over host North Platte.

The Eagles pound out 16 hits in the game, scoring every inning but the 2nd.

Hayden Hutchison led the offense with five RBI’s including a grand slam. Clayton Basgall also homered.

Austin Unrein had four hits and was also the winner on the mound, allowing just the one run on three hits while striking out five and walking one in the five inning game.

The Eagles are now 12-3 on the year. They play two at McPherson Tuesday.

Royals Swept by Pirates, 4th Loss In A Row

PITTSBURGH — Through the first five innings on Sunday, the Kansas City Royals couldn’t get a hit.

During the final four innings, they just couldn’t get a hit when it mattered.

The Royals’ struggles with runners in scoring position continued, and it led to another loss. The Pittsburgh Pirates finished off a sweep with a 3-2 win on Sunday.

Kansas City went 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position Sunday to cap a series in which they had four hits in 29 such situations.

“We’re not getting it done,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “Make up all the excuses you want. We’ve just got to get hits with runners in scoring position. I’m done with making excuses. It’s a hard game — there’s nothing easy about it. They will drive in runs. They’re just not doing it right now.”

Andrew McCutchen homered and drove in three runs and A.J. Burnett won his fifth consecutive start for Pittsburgh, which finished their first sweep of an AL team in more than a decade.

Alex Gordon and Alicedes Escobar each had two hits for the Royals, who have lost four in a row and six of eight.

Burnett (6-2) had a no-hitter through 5 1-3 innings until Gordon singled with one out in the sixth. He did not allow a baserunner until Eric Hosmer drew a two-out walk in the fourth or a run until Escobar’s two-out RBI double in the seventh.

But despite 10 baserunners over the final five innings, the Royals managed only two runs. Gordon scored when Hosmer hit into a fielder’s choice in the eighth.

Kansas City left two men on at the end of each of the final three innings.

“Those are opportunities when we crawl back in, we need to get big hits,” outfielder Mitch Maier said. “We had chances there. … That’s a time that we needed to capitalize and get those big knocks. Obviously, that’s the key to this game. That’s how you win and lose games. And we weren’t able to do it this weekend.”

McCutchen hit an RBI double in the first inning and hit a two-run homer in the third, giving the Pirates enough offense to win their fourth in a row despite having only three hits from all their other players.

“The fact that McCutchen was the one who hurt us, that’s the fact I’m very concerned about,” Kansas City catcher Brayan Pena said.

McCutchen has feasted on left-handers, improving his average to .463 against them after two hits in his first two at bats against Bruce Chen.

This was the 50th interleague series the Pirates had played since taking three in a row from the Cleveland Indians on June 15-17, 2001.

Since May 25, the Pirates have the best record in the majors at 12-3.

“This weekend was outstanding,” Burnett said. “We are playing good ball now and we are hitting on a couple of cylinders and it’s fun to watch.”

Burnett was charged with two runs on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings. Pittsburgh has won his past seven starts.

Burnett had a streak of 20 consecutive innings without an earned run at PNC Park snapped in the seventh. He is 4-0 with a 1.27 ERA at home this season.

“He had good tempo and good rhythm today on a hot day, and he was really efficient with things,” Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. “It was a very, very solid performance all across the board for A.J. today.”

Tony Watson came on with runners at first and third and one out in the eighth, allowing Gordon to score on a Hosmer fielder’s choice.

Juan Cruz walked the bases loaded but struck out Maier for the final out of the eighth.

With closer Joel Hanrahan unavailable because he had appeared in the past three games, Jason Grilli worked around trouble the ninth for his fourth career save and first of the season. With two on and no outs, Grilli stuck out Gordon and Johnny Giavotella to end the game.

McCutchen entered the game with 15 hits in his past 27 at-bats against left-handers. Despite going hitless over the first two games of the series, he made it 17 for 29 over the course of the first three innings.

“I hadn’t been feeling that great the past few days, but after a few times out in the cage, I was able to put a show forth today,” McCutchen said.

His first-inning double to right drove in Alex Presley, who led off the inning with a single. With Neil Walker on and two outs in the third, McCutchen lifted a 1-2 pitch from Bruce Chen into the left-field bleachers for his 11th of the season.

“He’s leading everybody hitting left-handers,” Yost said. “We really tried, even in the first inning, we didn’t want to throw him a strike.”

Chen (5-6) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts in five innings. He came into the game with five wins in his past six starts but fell to 0-4 in his career at PNC Park.

The Royals have lost 24 of their past 33 games against NL teams.

NOTES: Four of the first six Royals to reach base in the game stole a base. Opponents have been successful in 23 consecutive stolen base attempts against the Pirates. … The Royals’ next three games are the only ones at home over a 12-game interleague stretch that began in Pittsburgh. The Brewers play at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday-Thursday.

Larks Remain Unbeaten With Win in El Dorado

Zair Koeiman, Ryan Busboom and Jay Sanders all homered lifting the Hays Larks to an 11-5 win in El Dorado as they remain unnbeaten to open the 2012 summer season.

Koeiman hit a solo shot in the 2nd for the Larks first run. Trailing 3-1 in the 4th, Ryan Busboom connected on a 3-run shot to give the Larks the lead.

Jay Sanders highlighted a 4-run 9th with a 3-run homer to put the game away.

Ryan Mas pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits for his first win.  Starter Patrick Flanagan allowed four runs on seven hits over 4 1/3.

The Larks are now 7-0 and lead the Jayhawk League at 4-0. They close out the 3-game series and the 5-game road trip Sunday night.

Royals Blow 3-run Lead in Loss to Pirates

PITTSBURGH — Vin Mazzaro picked up his first major league hit in the fourth and fell apart in the bottom half of the inning.

Kansas City manager Ned Yost thought the two results were connected.

Mazzaro failed to record an out in the fourth as the Pittsburgh Pirates scored five times and went on to a 5-3 victory over the Royals on Saturday night.

The right-hander helped himself with a two-out RBI single that gave Kansas City a 3-0 lead, then promptly gave away the lead during a wacky rally by surging Pittsburgh.

“It’s been my experience that pitchers who aren’t in the National League have a hard time whenever they get a hit and run the bases,” Yost said. “I tried to get Vinnie to settle his heart rate down. When I saw a big inning might develop, especially knowing how good Pittsburgh’s pitching staff is and how we’ve struggled to score run, I took him out because I wanted it to stop right there.”

Clint Barmes drove in Pedro Alvarez with an infield hit as the Pirates scored five times on three singles, only one of which made it to the outfield. Barmes eventually came around to score on Neil Walker’s bouncer, lifting Pittsburgh to a 4-3 lead.

“It wasn’t loud but balls were finding grass and spots in the infield,” Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said. “It’s a tough inning if you’re playing defense because no balls are being barreled up.”

It was indeed a frustrating inning for Yost as he watched from the dugout.

“They didn’t hit any balls hard and they scored five runs,” he said, shaking his head.

Mazzaro (2-1) didn’t feel he was affected by his hit. He was bothered by his leadoff walk to Pedro Alvarez and his plunking of Jose Tabata.

“It was frustrating,” Mazzaro said. “I set up the whole inning with the walk and hitting a batter.”

Jared Hughes (2-0) pitched 2 1-3 scoreless innings to get the win and Joel Hanrahan got three outs for his 17th save in 19 opportunities.

Four Pirates relievers combined to work five scoreless frames after James McDonald gave up three runs in four innings.

The Royals went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position.

“We’re in a little bit of a lull right now and we’ve got to find a way to get that big hit with runners on second and third,” Kansas City outfielder Jeff Francoeur said. “And you’ve got to give credit to Pittsburgh’s pitching staff. They have the second-best ERA in the National League and there are a lot of good pitching staffs in the National League.”

Yuniesky Betancourt hit a two-run homer and Eric Hosmer had two doubles for Kansas City, which has dropped three straight. Mazzaro was charged with four runs, three earned, and three hits.

The Pirates have won three straight and are 11-3 since May 25, the best record in the major leagues in that span. Pittsburgh, which hasn’t had a winning season since 1992, also moved four games over .500 at 31-27.

Betancourt hit his third homer in the third inning.

After Alvarez and Tabata reached in the fourth, Rob Barajas singled to right to load the bases. Barmes brought home the first run with his grounder off the glove of diving shortstop Alcides Escobar.

Kelvin Herrera then came on to face pinch-hitter Matt Hague, who lifted a popup to right. Hosmer, normally Kansas City’s first baseman, let the ball drop in front of him but grabbed it with his bare hand and threw a strike to catcher Brayan Pena, who juggled the ball and Tabata was ruled safe.

Hosmer was playing right field to make room for Billy Butler at first. Butler is the Royals’ usual designated hitter, but Saturday night’s game was in an NL park.

Alex Presley then hit a slow roller down the line that third baseman Mike Moustakas couldn’t make a play on, driving in Barajas and tying it at 3. Walker gave the Pirates the lead and Garrett Jones drove in the final run of the inning with a fielder’s choice.

NOTES: Kansas City placed RHP Felipe Paulino (right groin strain) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Thursday, and recalled RHP Nate Adcock from Triple-A Omaha. RHP Luis Mendoza is expected to take Paulino’s spot in the rotation and start Tuesday against Milwaukee. … Pittsburgh RHP Jeff Karstens (right groin) will be limited to playing catch for five to seven days before being re-evaluated. Karstens, who has been on the DL since April 18 with right shoulder inflammation, was injured Thursday while making a rehab start for Triple-A Indianapolis. … As part of a Negro Leagues tribute, the Royals wore replica Kansas City Monarchs uniforms and the Pirates wore Homestead Grays throwbacks. … The three-game series ends Sunday afternoon with LHP Bruce Chen (5-5, 4.37 ERA) starting for Kansas City against RHP A.J. Burnett (5-2, 3.76 ERA).

Larks Win Series Opener in El Dorado, Remain Undefeated

Shawn Lewick and Jason Heflin combined to allow no earned runs on four hits as the Hays Larks moved to 6-0 with a 5-1 win at El Dorado Friday night at McDonald Stadium.

Lewick allowed one unearned run on three hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking four for his second win of the summer. Heflin allowed just one hit, striking out two and walking one for his second save.

Trailing 1-0, the Larks took the lead for good scoring three in the third on RBI singles from Austin Darby and MacKenzie Handel. Joe Betcher drove in the final run of the inning on a fielders choice.

The Larks added two more runs in the sixth on Austin Jarvis’ one-out double and a Darby sacrifice fly.

The Broncos threatened in the eighth getting two on with back-to-back walks to open the inning, but Heflin retired the next three batters. They would get two on in the ninth but a double play and strikeout ended the game.

Aaron Cornell had three hits, Ryan Busboom two and Darby drove in two.

Royals Shuffle Lineup, Lose to Pirates on Road

PITTSBURGH — With so many of their players out of position, the Kansas City Royals looked out of place playing in a National League ballpark.

Kansas City managed just five hits and had a couple of fielding miscues during a 4-2 loss to the surging Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.

Playing without the designated hitter for the first time this season, the Royals had three players out of position and all that shuffling played a role in their 13th loss in their past 16 interleague road games.

Regular designated hitter Billy Butler, who leads the team with 11 homers, made his third start at first base. First baseman Eric Hosmer was in right field and Jeff Francoeur moved from right to center. Francoeur had three prior innings of experience in center, and Hosmer had never played right in the majors.

Hosmer misplayed Rod Barajas’ leadoff single in the second, allowing him to move up a base. Butler was prominent in a botched rundown that led to another Pittsburgh run in the third.

“It’s going to take them a game or two to get acclimated because they’re playing out of position,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “Those plays hurt us early and we couldn’t get much offense going after that.”

Yost said the Royals have to stick with the alignment over much of the next two weeks. Kansas City began a stretch of nine interleague road games in 13 days on Friday.

Yuniesky Betancourt drove in a run and scored for the Royals, who have lost four of six.

“We’ve got to find a way to get Billy’s bat in the lineup because that’s the best possible situation for us,” Hosmer said. “I’ve just got to try to get more live reps out there in game situations and try to get better.”

Pittsburgh (30-27) has won 10 of 13 to move three games over .500 for the first time this season.

Lumbering catcher Rod Barajas scored the Pirates’ second run when he used a nifty slide to avoid the tag from Humberto Quintero following Clint Barmes’ single in the second. Alvarez made it 4-2 an inning later when he took off from third after Jose Tabata was picked off first but got into a rundown.

“Dance moves, I think,” is how the 36-year-old Barajas described his dive to the inside of home, roll over and lunge to extend his finger tips to the plate.

Erik Bedard (4-6) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings as Pittsburgh captured the opening game of a series for the sixth consecutive time. Jason Grilli worked a perfect eighth and Joel Hanrahan retired the side in order in the ninth for his 16th save in 18 opportunities.

Garrett Jones doubled in Neil Walker in the first, and Walker’s infield hit drove in Barmes to make it 3-0 in the second.

Betancourt hit an RBI double in the third and scored on Mike Moustakas’ base hit to get the Royals within one.

Luke Hochevar (3-7) remained winless in his past six outings, allowing four runs and nine hits in six innings.

“Even though I gave up some runs early, I was able to keep my pitch count down and keep us in the game,” Hochevar said.

NOTES: The Royals recalled 1B Clint Robinson to add an extra bench bat for the nine games in NL parks they have over the next 13 days. Robinson made his major league debut, striking out as a pinch hitter to end the game. LHP Ryan Verdugo was optioned to Triple-A Omaha. … Pirates RHP Jeff Karstens underwent an MRI a day after leaving a rehabilitation start for Triple-A Indianapolis. Karstens, who is on the disabled list because of inflammation in his right shoulder, injured his hip and is day to day. … Pirates RHP James McDonald (5-2, 2.14) has won five of his past six decisions and ranks second in the NL in ERA heading into Saturday’s start. RHP Vin Mazzaro (2-0, 2.25) will start for Kansas City five days after pitching six shutout innings in his most recent outing.

Hays Eagle Sweep Doubleheader with Dodge City

The Hays Sr. Legion Eagles improved their record to 9-2 with a doubleheader sweep of Dodge City yesterday. Wooldridge pitched two innings in relief for the win.

In game two Hays wasted no time getting on the board, the Eagles plated five runs and scored at least one run in six-of-seven innings for the 10-1 win. Hays starter Hayden Hutchinson allowed just one run on four hits through six innings for his second win. The Eagles are now 9-2 and they will play a weekend tournament in North Platte Nebraska over the weekend.
