Hays Soccer To State For First Time

The Hays High Indian soccer team advanced to the quarterfinal tournament for the first time in program history with a 1-0 penalty kick win over Andover Central.  The Indians hosted the regional championship game on a windy Thursday evening that saw no regulation goals nor in any of the four overtimes.

Hays High came close to tallying a goal late in the second half when April Johnson hit the bottom half of the cross bar, the ball caromed straight and then back up when the goalie found the ball.

Andover Central thought they had won game in the first overtime with the wind at the backs playing havoc on the ball.  Taylor Herman saved the game on a header along the goal off a Jaguar corner kick.  The header went out of bounds setting up Andover Central for another corner kick that found the net, however the official immediately discounted the goal because of a player moving Indian goalie Laura Truman.

Hays had four shots on goal in the second overtime with the wind at their backs with non really threatening the Andover Central Goal keeper.

Neither team got a very good look at the goal in the five minute third and fourth over time periods.

The game finally came down to penalty kicks, and that too had its own drama.  Shelby Dinkel shot and scored first for the Indians and then was matched by Andover Central.  Rachel Luedders had her shot blocked but the Jaguar goalie was declared to not have started on the goal line resulting in a rekick that Luedder converted.  Andover Central again matched the penalty kick goal and then tied the PKs at three after Shannon Shubert nailed her shot.  Megan Bird made the fourth  kick for Hays High then goalie Laura Truman made a stop to set up sophomore Lacey Pfannenstiel with the game winner.

Hays is now 15-3, further extending their school record.

Post season will continue for Hays High on Tuesday, May 22nd.

Orioles Top Royals in 15

US PRESSWIRE
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Adam Jones homered with one out in the 15th inning, lifting the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. Jones was hitless in six at-bats before connecting for his team-leading 12th home run – nine of them tying the game or giving the Orioles a lead. Jones sent a 2-2 pitch from Nate Adcock (0-1), the fifth Kansas City pitcher, far over the left field wall. The Orioles improved to 5-0 in extra-inning road games. Kevin Gregg (1-1) pitched two hitless innings, walking one, to pick up the victory. Jim Johnson earned his 13th save.

Royals Win Second Straight Over Rangers

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Vin Mazzaro (32) fields the ball against Texas Rangers' Alberto Gonzalez, not shown, before throwing to first for the out during the second inning of a baseball game in Arlington, Texas. LM Otero/Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Texas  On the road against the American League’s best offense isn’t the most ideal way to make your season debut. Vin Mazzaro made the most of it.

Mazzaro kept Texas’ potent lineup in check for five innings, and Billy Butler and Brayan Pena each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Kansas City Royals to their second straight win over the Rangers, 7-4 on Tuesday night.

The Royals, losers of 12 straight last month, have now won five of six games and pulled off a rare two-game sweep of the Rangers — Kansas City’s first since 1977.

“To come in here and win two games is big for us,” said Royals manager Ned Yost. “Our pitching has been pretty good. That shows you how good.”

Mazzaro, making the start in place of left-hander Danny Duffy, who is out for the season with a torn elbow ligament, gave up three runs on seven hits. He had two strikeouts.

“It’s a tough situation,” Mazzaro said of the injury to Duffy. “But any situation you get thrown in you have to give it your best. You never know when you’ll get another one. I just went out there and stayed focused on every pitch.”

Mazzaro and the Royals got a little help from two throwing errors by Rangers starter Colby Lewis (3-3), which led to five unearned runs in the first two innings.

Mike Moustakas, who reached base for a 22nd consecutive game, homed in the third for Kansas City.

Major league home run leader Josh Hamilton, who is only the fourth player in 40 years to lead the majors’ triple crown categories 35 games into a season, according to information provided by the Rangers from the Elias Sports Bureau, extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single and added a sacrifice fly.

Reliever Tim Collins struck out five of the six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings for the Royals, who handed Lewis his third loss in May.

“Collins was dynamite tonight,” said manager Ned Yost. “The bullpen has been doing it all year long.”

Lewis’ throwing error on a comebacker to the mound by Eric Hosmer put runners on second and third with no outs in the first. Jarrod Dyson scored on Butler’s fielder’s choice and Lewis retired Alex Gordon on a flyout to left field before Jeff Francoeur doubled and Moustakas was hit by a pitch. Pena followed with a two-run single to put the Royals up 3-0.

Moustakas came around to score on Chris Getz’s run-scoring base hit.

Kansas City sent nine hitters to the plate in the inning.

“The only thing we can look back at is that Colby should have made that play,” said Texas manager Ron Washington. “If he makes that play, it’s a zero on the scoreboard.

“They swung the bat, but those at-bats wouldn’t have happened if we execute some plays.”

Dyson led off the second with a single and advanced to second when Lewis bounced a pickoff attempt short and wide of the bag. Butler hit a double to score Dyson and put Kansas City ahead 5-0.

The run support was plenty for Mazzaro and the bullpen, which held the majors’ top-scoring team to one run in four innings. Mazzaro had made six starts with Triple-A Omaha this season, going 1-0 with a 4.37 ERA. Before his promotion May 8, Mazzaro had allowed just two runs on eight hits in 13 innings in his last two starts.

David Murphy and Mitch Moreland had RBIs for the Rangers, and Brandon Snyder homered in the ninth.

Dyson reached base three times for Kansas City, including a double to lead off the game.

TMP-Marian Baseball Returning to State Tournament

2012 Lakin Regional Champions

The baseball team from Thomas More Prep – Marian will be heading back to the Class 3A State Tournament for the third straight year after claiming the Regional Championship Tuesday evening at Louck’s Park in Lakin. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals for being the #1 seed, the Monarchs defeated Goodland 14-4 in the semifinals and then held on to win 4-3 over Lakin in the title game.

TMP’s Brian Schumacher Post-Game Interview:
TMPpost5-15

TMP has now won 22 straight games to get their record to 22-1 heading into the state tournament in Manhattan next Friday. The Herd has finished as the state runner-up the past two years and will be considered one of the favorites to win it all this year as the #1 team in the state.

Highlights:
tmphilites5-15
Regional Semifinals:  TMP-Marian 14, Goodland 4 (5 Innings)
A productive third and fifth inning put TMP past Goodland in the semifinals. TMP swept Goodland in a doubleheader earlier this year and earned their third win over the Cowboys (6-16) in 2012.

The Monarchs led 1-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Goodland’s starting pitcher Taylen Smith started the third frame by giving up five straight walks. The Monarchs would send 11 batters to plate that inning while posting six runs.

TMP would score five more runs in the fifth inning to close out the game early due to the 10-run mercy rule after five innings.

TMP managed to get seven hits in the game led by Jacob Fouts who went 2-for-3 from the plate.

Pierce Schippers pitched all five innings for the win. Schippers (3-0) gave up six hits while striking out eight batters and issuing no walks.

Regional Championship Game:  TMP-Marian 4, Lakin 3
In a rematch of last year’s Regional Championship game, the Monarchs held on for the win despite not hitting well. Only two batters from TMP came up with hits in the contest. Taylor Pfeifer and Colby Schippers both went 2-for-3 from the plate to account for the four Monarch hits.

TMP went scoreless the first three innings thanks in part to the excellent pitching from Lakin’s Ryan Swank. Along with only giving up four hits, Swank struck out 12 batters. He struck out two Monarchs in each of his six innings on the mound.

After tying the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning off a Colby Schippers’ single, TMP built their lead in the fifth inning. With two outs in the frame, Pfeifer came up with a 2-RBI double to help the Monarchs build a 4-1 lead.

After a couple of errors committed by the Monarchs, Lakin (19-3) would come right back and score two runs in the top of the sixth inning to make it a one-run ballgame.

The Broncs would have one more chance in the seventh inning with runners at second and third and with two outs, but TMP’s starting pitcher Nick Hammeke forced a pop-up to end the game. Hammeke (8-0) pitched a complete game giving up three runs on six hits while striking out five batters.
