MINNEAPOLIS — Josh Willingham had three hits and came a homer away from hitting for the cycle to help the Minnesota Twins snap their six-game losing streak by beating the Kansas City Royals 7-4 Sunday.

Jason Marquis (2-0) threw six strong innings for Minnesota, who also got three hits and a pair of RBIs from Danny Valencia.

Bruce Chen (0-3) had his worst outing of the season, giving up six runs on six hits in only 2 2-3 innings for the Royals, whose three-game winning streak ended. It was Chen’s shortest outing since lasting 3 1-3 innings on July 9, 2010.

Willingham drove in two runs in his first game back from the paternity list following the birth of his son last week. He helped the Twins get to Chen early with a two-run triple in the first.

Chen had pitched well in his previous four starts but was out of sorts from the get-go Sunday, allowing Minnesota’s first four batters to reach base. Valencia’s first-inning single scored Willingham to make it 4-0.

After a 1-2-3 second, the Twins got to Chen again in the third with Willingham’s leadoff double, and Valencia followed two batters later with an RBI triple. A sacrifice fly by Ryan Doumit put the Twins up 6-1, and Royals manager Ned Yost yanked Chen after he walked Trevor Plouffe.

Mike Moustakas homered in the second and added an RBI single in the fourth for the Royals. Eric Hosmer also drove in a run on a fielder’s choice in the fourth.

Doumit had an RBI double in the seventh for the Twins. Jared Burton and Glen Perkins each provided an inning of scoreless relief. Matt Capps allowed an RBI-single by Alcides Escobar in the ninth.

Five-Run 7th Lifts FHSU Baseball to Weekend Sweep of Wayne State

FHSU's Jesse Hart allowed just two hits in five scoreless innings in relief to move to 4-1 in the TIgers 7-2 win over Wayne State Sunday at Larks Park.

A five-run seventh inning lifted Fort Hays State to a 7-2 win over Wayne State College on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 29) at Larks Park in Hays. The Tigers swept the two-game weekend series after a 5-3 win on Saturday night. FHSU is now 25-19 overall.

FHSU jumped on top early with two runs in the first inning. The Tigers stole four bases in the inning to help manufacture the runs. Mace Krol had an RBI groundout and JC Ochoa had an RBI single.
The Tigers had a rash of errors in the second inning, committing all three they had in the game, which led to one run. The Wildcats eventually tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth on a solo home run by C.J. Nolen. That would be the final inning for FHSU starter Andy Lewton, who got out of a bases loaded jam to keep the game tied.

Jesse Hart entered in relief to start the fifth inning and cruised the rest of the way, keeping the Wildcat bats quiet. He allowed just two hits and three walks over 5.0 innings with two strikeouts, moving to 4-1 on the season.

The Tigers finally broke through in the seventh as Nash Smith led off the inning with a single. A Ryan Busboom double with one out put runners at second and third. The Wildcats opted to intentionally walk Mace Krol, but JC Ochoa worked a full-count walk to push across the go ahead run. Brandon Hoefler followed with an RBI single, then Jay Sanders made it 5-2 with a sacrifice fly RBI. Anthony Salinas and Chris Santoscoy capped the rally with a pair of RBI singles to push the lead to five.

The Tigers wrap up the regular season next weekend in Hays with a four-game series against Missouri Western, the second-place team in the MIAA. Fort Hays State is currently fourth, but just a half game back of Emporia State.

FHSU jumped on top 2-0 in the second inning with a sacrifice fly RBI by Luke Kordsmeier and an RBI single by Jay Sanders with two outs.

The lead grew to 4-0 in the third with RBI singles from Ryan Busbbom and Brandon Hoefler, but couldn’t push any more across with the bases loaded as the inning ended with a double play.

Starter Shawn Lewick struggled with his control early, but managed to allow just two runs in the fourth after having the bases loaded with no outs. He went 5.0 innings in the start, allowing four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Lewick moved to 6-3 on the season with the win.

Alex Ellison relieved Lewick and went 3.0 innings, allowing just one run on three hits with one strikeout. The run he allowed came in the seventh on a double that narrowed the FHSU lead to 4-3.

Black Edges Gold 21-20 in Spring Game

The annual Fort Hays State football spring game took place on Saturday morning (Apr. 28) at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays, Kan. The team was split into two squads, Black and Gold, with Black winning on a touchdown at the end of the scrimmage 21-20. The teams played three 15-minute periods.

The Gold team took the early advantage on a 42-yard field goal by Tyler Kimbrough, capping a nine-play, 50-yard drive. It was the only points put on the board by either team in the first period.

The Black took its first advantage of the game on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Sheppard to tight end Eli Cordon, which capped a seven-play, 64-yard drive.

Gold took the lead back though, going up 10-7 on a 17-yard touchdown run by Ed Smith, which capped a four-play 30 yard drive after a blocked punt by Treyvius Alexander. Smith went on to rush for 82 yards on 16 carries, averaging 5.1 yards per carry.

The Black took the lead back late in the second period as Treveon Albert hauled in a 33-yard pass from Sheppard up the sideline, pinning the ball against the defender to make the grab. That put Black back in front 14-10. However, the Gold put together a quick drive to get Kimbrough set up for a 29-yard field goal to make the score 14-13 at the end of the second.

The teams were scoreless for nearly the entire third period until the Gold took the lead back as time expired on the clock on a Sheppard 34-yard touchdown pass to Cornelius Gallon up the right sideline. Gallon finished the game with 59 yards on three catches. It looked as though Gold had won the scrimmage 20-14, but Coach Brown wanted to see Treveon Albert run 10 plays at quarterback after playing wide receiver all game.

So, in an untimed drive, Albert would show his ability by taking the Black team down the field and on the 10th-play found Treyvius Alexander for a 22-yard touchdown pass. A Kimbrough extra-point put the Black back on top 21-20 to conclude the action. Alexander caught four passes for 52 yards for the Black.

Sheppard had a solid afternoon throwing the ball, going 12-of-21 passing for 166 yards and three touchdowns. Shaun Ohlde was a workhorse running the ball, carrying 15 times for the Black and seven times for the Gold, accumulating 86 yards on the ground

Caleb Crocker posted a solid outing on defense, recording nine tackles for the Gold squad. Basil Bandy recorded two sacks, Layton Hickel had a forced fumble, and Austin Hubert recorded the only interception of the day.

Fort Hays State will return to action in August in preparation for the 2012 season, which starts on August 30 at Emporia State University. Gordon, Butler Lead Royals To 3rd Straight Win

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Mike Moustakas drove-in the go-ahead run as part of a two-run eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals edged the Minnesota Twins, 7-6, in the first of a three-game series at Target Field on Friday.

Moustakas also scored a run and Billy Butler cracked a two-run homer among his two hits and three RBI, while Alex Gordon added a two-run long ball and scored three times for the Royals, who have won three straight since dropping 12 in a row. Alcides Escobar added two hits and an RBI in the victory.

Jose Mijares (1-1) picked up the win with a scoreless seventh inning, and Jonathan Broxton shut down the Twins in the ninth to earn his third save of the year.

“We’ve swung the bats very well tonight,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “We got some clutch hitting, power hitting, and some pretty darn good clutch pitching and really good defense.”

Trevor Plouffe cracked a solo homer, Joe Mauer ended 2-for-4 with a double, triple and an RBI and Justin Morneau added an RBI single. Alexi Casilla knocked in two runs and Denard Span and Ben Revere collected an RBI apiece for the Twins, who have lost six straight.

Brian Duensing (0-2) gave up two runs on two hits and one walk in an inning of relief to suffer the loss.

With the contest tied at five, the Royals took the lead for good in the eighth. Jeff Francoeur started the rally with a one-out double into the left- center field gap and came around to score on Moustakas’ single up the middle to make it 6-5. The Royals added an insurance run later in the inning on an RBI single to left by Escobar.

The Twins got one back in the home eighth when Danny Valencia doubled to left, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Revere and scored on a groundout by Casilla.

Broxton retired the side in order in the ninth to seal the win for Kansas City.

Kansas City jumped out front in its first at-bat when Jarrod Dyson reached on an error by Morneau to start the inning and Gordon followed by blasting one over the right-field wall to give the Royals a 2-0 advantage.

But the Twins got both runs back in the bottom of the frame. Span worked a walk to begin the inning and after Jamey Carroll popped out, Mauer cracked an RBI triple into the right-field corner and Morneau brought home Mauer with a single up the middle.

The Twins took the lead in the second when Plouffe deposited a fastball from Royals starter Everett Teaford into the seats in left field to make it 3-2, but Kansas City quickly retook the lead in the third when Butler crushed a sinker from Carl Pavano over the left-field wall for a two-run shot to make it 4-3.

Minnesota tied the game at four in the fourth when Plouffe drew a leadoff walk and scored three batters later on a single into left field by Span.

But the Royals came right back and reclaimed the lead in the fifth on an RBI single up the middle by Butler.

Minnesota again answered to tie the game in the sixth when Ryan Doumit led off the inning with a double. After a fly out from Valencia and a pop out by Plouffe, Casilla came up with a big two-out double down the left-field line to bring in Doumit.

“It was a tough loss, but as a starting pitcher, I have to set the tone and I didn’t do that,” Pavano said. “They gave me a lead and I let them back into it. You have to put your team in a position to win.”

FHSU Softball Season Ends With Two Losses Friday at MIAA Tournament

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

The Fort Hays State softball team battled on Friday (April 27) at the MIAA Centennial Softball Championship in Overland Park, Kan., but they fell to the top two teams in the conference and were eliminated from the tournament. FHSU was downed 2-0 by top seed and No. 16 Emporia State before dropping a run-rule 14-5 game in five innings to the second seed, No. 21 Missouri Western. Fort Hays State goes 2-2 in the tournament and ends their season with a 31-19 mark.

(1) #16 Emporia State 2, (3) Fort Hays State 0
Fort Hays State struggled to get going offensively in the first game of the day, notching just two hits and being shutout for the first time in 13 games. The Tigers sent Maddie Holub to the circle against the MIAA’s regular season champion and she responded with another strong outing, allowing two runs on six hits in a complete game.

Emporia State took the lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI single and they tacked on their second run in the fourth on a leadoff solo home run. Fort Hays State had their best chance to strike in the top of the fourth inning after Callie Wright singled and Holub walked to give FHSU two runners with just one out. Adriana Wortley laid down a sacrifice bunt to get both runners in scoring position, but that’s where they would be stranded after Amanda Vaupel grounded out to second base.

Holub pitched six innings and allowed only six hits, but she took the loss to drop her record to 19-9. She also added three strikeouts to give her 306 for the year, far and away a new Fort Hays State single-season record.

(2) #21 Missouri Western 14, (3) Fort Hays State 5 (5 innings)
Missouri Western jumped on top of the Tigers early, leading off the game with a home run and adding two more long balls in the first inning for a 6-0 lead that they would not look back from. The Griffons lead reached 8-0 after three innings, but Fort Hays State would pull it to 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth after back-to-back solo home runs from Holub and Wortley.

Wortley added her second homer of the game, and eighth of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Griffons had done enough damage with a six-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Fort Hays State fell by a final of 14-5 and saw their season end with a 31-19 record.

Kaitlyn Shattleroe started for the Tigers, but did not record an out and gave up three earned runs. Freshman Abby Morrison pitched five innings in relief, but was shelled for 13 hits and 11 runs. Shattleroe took the loss and ends the year with an 8-5 record.

Fort Hays State ended the season one game shy of reaching the conference’s championship series for the second consecutive year. The Tigers end the year 31-19, for a winning percentage of .620, which is the second best in school history

Tigers FHSU Softball Downs Pitt State and No. 21 Missouri Western at MIAA Tournament

Maddie Holub pitched two complete games to lead the FHSU softball team to two wins at the MIAA tournament. Holub also homered in each game and finished with four RBI's

The Fort Hays State softball team picked up a 7-2 victory over No. 6 seed Pittsburg State to open the MIAA Centennial Postseason Tournament on Thursday evening (April 26) in Overland Park, Kan. The Tigers, seeded third, followed that with a 2-1 win over No. 2 seed and nationally ranked Missouri Western in the night cap. That victory, which improves the Tigers to 31-17 on the year, sets up a showdown with top-seeded Emporia State on Friday afternoon at 3pm with a spot in the championship on the line.

(3) Fort Hays State 7, (6) Pittsburg State 2
Taylor Nelson put Fort Hays State on top 1-0 with a solo home run to open the game and the Tigers would not look back as they defeated the Gorillas for the third time in the past week. FHSU added three runs in the bottom of the third with Maddie Holub scoring on a wild pitch before Kellsi Olsen hit a two-run single to push the lead to 4-0.

Pitt State scored their own run on a wild pitch in the fourth, but Holub came back with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning which extended the lead to 6-1. She also accounted for the Tigers final run of the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to give the Tigers a 7-1 lead that Pitt State would only slightly cut into with a solo homer in the top of the seventh to make the final margin 7-2.

Holub, making her third start against the Gorillas since last Saturday, pitched a complete game and again struck out 16 batters, tying her own single-game school record. In the process, she picked up her 18th win of the year and passed Kayla Rupa for the FHSU record for career strikeouts. The 18 wins is also a Fort Hays State single-season record.

Holub, Nelson and Olsen each had a multi-hit game for the Tigers, who outhit the Gorillas 10-4 in the game. Holub was 3-for-4 with three RBI while Olsen had two hits and drove in two.

(3) Fort Hays State 2, (2) No. 21 Missouri Western 1
The Tigers again struck with a home run in the bottom of the first inning, this time with Holub doing the honors and giving FHSU the early 1-0 lead. There was little offense the rest of the way, with Holub and MIAA Pitcher of the Year Jackie Bishop engaging in a pitcher’s duel.

Holub allowed seven hits, but walked just one and worked out of several tough situations, causing the Griffons to leave seven runners on base. Missouri Western tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run. Later in the fourth, the Griffons had runners on second and third with one out, but the ever-resilient Holub got a strike out and infield pop-up to get out of the inning without further damage done.

Fort Hays State would not let the game stay tied long. Callie Wright walked to leadoff the fourth and she advanced to second following a sacrifice bunt from Adriana Wortley. Amanda Vaupel came up with a clutch two-out single to right field which allowed Wright to score and put the Tigers back on top 2-1.

A fatigued Holub limited the Griffons to just one hit, and two total baserunners, over the final three innings. The Griffons did get a leadoff walk in the sixth inning, but first team All-MIAA second baseman Taylor Nelson gunned out a Missouri Western runner at the plate and Holub picked up one of her eight strikeouts in the game to end the Griffons rally. It proved to be the final rally by Missouri Western after the Tigers retired the side in order in the top of the seventh inning to preserve a 2-1 win.

Holub, pitching her second complete game of the evening, struck out eight more batters in the game to push her season total to 303 and her career mark to 626, a new Fort Hays State career record. She also has upped her record to 19-8 on the year and lowered her ERA to 1.59.

Holub and Nelson Named First Team All-MIAA; Wortley Tabbed as Defensive POY

Fort Hays State had six players named to the All-MIAA softball team, announced on Thursday evening prior to the beginning of the conference’s softball tournament. Pitcher Maddie Holub and second baseman Taylor Nelson were named to the first team while catcher Callie Wright and first baseman Adriana Wortley were second team selections. Wortley was also chosen as the MIAA’s Defensive Player of the Year. Third baseman Chelsey Rottinghaus and outfielder Amanda Vaupel were honorable mention selections.

Holub just completed one of the most decorated regular seasons in Fort Hays State history. She led the MIAA and ranked in the top five in NCAA Division II in strikeouts (279) and saves (4) and set an FHSU single-season record in both categories. Holub is currently 17-8 on the year with a 1.64 ERA in 175.0 innings pitched. She was a three-time MIAA Player of the Week, twice as a pitcher and once as a hitter, and was just named the Louisville Slugger Division II Pitcher of the Week by the NFCA on Wednesday. Holub, a junior from Hays, is also one of the Tigers top offensive threats, leading the team in batting average (.347), hits (51) and home runs (7) and ranking in the top three in almost every other offensive category. This is the third All-MIAA selection for Holub, who was a second team choice in 2010 and an honorable mention selection last season, both as a utility player.

Nelson earns the first All-MIAA nod of her career with FHSU after starting all 46 regular season games at second base and being one of the Tigers most consistent hitters. She leads the team in runs scored (35), doubles (10), triples (3) and RBI (31) and ranks third in batting average (.320). Nelson, a senior from Kansas City, Mo., had one of her best weekends to close out the regular season, hitting .538 in four games last weekend, which included hitting for the cycle in the series against Pittsburg State. She has also been solid in the field for the Tigers, recording 78 putouts and 45 assists and ending the regular season with a .953 fielding percentage.

Wortley becomes the first FHSU player to win the MIAA’s Defensive Player of the Year award and she earns her third consecutive second team selection at first base. She has a .319 batting average for the year and ranks second on the team with seven doubles, six home runs and 22 RBI. Wortley, a senior from Tacoma, Wash., earns the defensive award after recording 273 putouts and 12 assists while committing only four errors for a .986 fielding percentage. She is the first Fort Hays State player to win the award since the Tigers joined the conference for the 2007 season.

Wright earns her first All-MIAA honor after having a strong year behind the dish for the Tigers. Wright, who played in the outfield as a freshman, moved to catcher this year and responded by hitting .252 with six doubles, one triple, three home runs and 21 RBI. She has also been strong defensively, throwing out seven runners stealing and picking off four more. Wright, a sophomore from Topeka, Kan., finished the regular season with a .984 fielding percentage and she had a team-high seven sacrifice hits.

Rottinghaus also picked up her first All-MIAA nod in her first year with the Tigers after transferring from Labette (Kan.) Community College. She is hitting .275 for the year and has hit six doubles, one triple and three home runs while ending the regular season with 15 RBI. She has also become one of the Tigers best threats on the base path, stealing eight bases in nine attempts. Rottinghaus, a junior from Seneca, Kan., recorded 36 putouts and 84 assists to finish the year with a .938 fielding percentage.

Vaupel becomes the first FHSU freshman to earn All-MIAA accolades since Holub in 2010. She emerged as one of the top hitting threats for the Tigers while playing every game this year in center field. Vaupel ranks second on the team in hitting with an average of .333 and she has 47 hits, including five doubles and two home runs. Vaupel, a freshman from Olathe, Kan., also ranks third on the team with 25 RBI and she has been hit by a pitch a team-high five times.
