(FHSU Athletics Photo)

The Fort Hays State softball team took a pair from Missouri Southern on Senior Day at Tiger Stadium in Hays. Maddie Holub allowed just one hit in a 1-0 game one win, and the Tigers used a strong fourth inning for an 8-3 game two victory. The Tigers won all four games this weekend, finishing the regular season 29-17 (13-7 MIAA).

Game 1: Fort Hays State 1, Missouri Southern 0
Maddie Holub tossed a one-hit complete game in game one of the doubleheader. Holub, who just tied her own single game strikeout record yesterday with 16 against Pittsburg State, held the Lions hitless in the first 5.2 innings before MSSU hit a single right back at Holub in the sixth inning. It was one of just two base runners for MSSU all game (one walk). The junior from Hays fanned 15 Lion batters, including seven consecutive.

The Tigers tallied their one run in the second inning as senior Adriana Wortley scored from third base on a MSSU wild pitch.

Wortley was a perfect 3-for-3 in game one with two singles and the double.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 8, Missouri Southern 3
After going up 3-2, FHSU put up four runs in the fourth to pull away from MSSU. With runners on second and third, senior Taylor Nelson’s RBI single scored two Tiger runs. The Tigers totaled two more runs in the inning on a fielding error by the Lions’ rightfielder, doubling the FHSU advantage to 7-3.

Nelson added her third RBI of game two on a single in the fifth, scoring Kellsi Olsen from second.

The Tigers started game two strong with two runs in the first inning. Holub singled to center field, bringing home Nelson, and Amanda Vaupel brought home Holub with a RBI double to right.

In the third inning, Holub hit a solo home run, her team-leading seventh of the season to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead after three innings.

FHSU takes on Pittsburg State on Thursday (April 26) in the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City, Kan. First pitch is scheduled for 6pm

Royals Losing Streak Reaches Nine in Loss To Toronto

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Colby Rasmus went deep twice and drove in four runs and Edwin Encarnacion added a home run and three RBI, powering the Blue Jays past the struggling Royals, 9-5, in the second meeting of a four- game series.

Kansas City remains winless at home (0-8) — the longest drought to start a season in franchise history — and has lost nine straight overall.

Rasmus and Encarnacion each had three of Toronto’s 14 hits to back Drew Hutchinson in his major league debut. The 21-year-old Hutchinson (1-0) recorded his first win despite allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks over 5 1/3 frames.

The Royals did not have enough firepower to survive Luis Mendoza’s poor start and subpar relief efforts by Everett Teaford and Kelvin Herrera. Mendoza was charged with four runs on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings, Teaford (0-1) gave up three runs in his three-inning stint and Herrera served up a pair of home runs.

Eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon each homered and Alcides Escobar went 4-for-4 in defeat.

Kansas City went ahead 5-4 following a four-run fifth inning, but the lead was short-lived after Brett Lawrie began the sixth with a single and trotted home when Rasmus blasted a screaming line drive into the right-field seats.

Darren Oliver stranded runners on the corners in the bottom half by striking out Mitch Maier and getting Yuniesky Betancourt to hit a sinking liner that was caught by Jose Bautista in right.

Herrera wasn’t as effective in relief in the away seventh, entering with one on and one out and promptly serving up Encarnacion’s fourth home run of the season. Rasmus came up two batters later and slugged another homer to right.

Oliver and Carlos Villanueva combined to keep the Royals in check the rest of the way.

In the first inning, Gordon welcomed Hutchinson to the big leagues by finding the first row of seats in center field for his second home run of the season.

Mendoza was roughed up for four runs in the fourth, which began with Adam Lind doubling to right and scoring on Encarnacion’s one-out base hit. The next four hitters all singled to chase Mendoza, with Rasmus, J.P. Arencibia and Yunel Escobar all driving in runs.

Bautista lined into a double play with the bases loaded to end the inning, and the Royals responded with four runs of their own in the fifth.

Maier hit a stand-up triple into the right-field gap to plate Alcides Escobar and scored on Betancourt’s single up the middle. Hosmer’s two-run blast later in the inning landed in the seats in right-center, just short of the waterfalls.

Maddie Holub,, who pitched the fifth no-hitter in program history in her last start against NWMSU on Tuesday, was impressive again in the circle for FHSU. Holub tied her own school record, recording 16 strikeouts, which matches the 16 strikeouts she had against UNK in the first game of the season. Holub, a junior from Hays, started strong, fanning the first five batters she faced. Fourteen of the first 15 outs were via the strikeout, and Holub struck out the side in four of the first five innings.

The Tiger offense got on the board in the second inning as Madison Putman’s infield single allowed Amanda Vaupel to score for a 1-0 lead.

After allowing one run in the top of the fifth, FHSU scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 4-1. After a PSU error allowed Taylor Nelson to score, Holub homered to right field to give the Tigers a 3-1 advantage. FHSU scored their third run of the inning on another Gorilla error.

Nelson hit a solo home run in the sixth for the 5-1 final score.

Holub went the complete seven innings in game one, allowing the one run on five hits while striking out 16.

Kelssi Olsen’s walk-off two-run home run gave the Tigers the victory in the nightcap of the doubleheader. The Tigers went into the seventh down 5-4 and recorded outs in their first two at bats. The two out rally started with an Amanda Vaupel home run to left field to tie the score at 5-5. After a Chelsey Rottinghaus single up the middle, Olsen knocked the first pitch she saw over the left field fence, lifting FHSU to the 7-5 win.

The Tigers pulled out to a 3-0 advantage after two innings. Adrian Wortley’s sac fly scored Taylor Nelson in the first and Nelson brought home two in the second on a triple down the right field line.

Pitt State took the lead with back-to-back two run innings in the fourth and fifth, however, the Tigers tied the score at 4-4 in the fifth on a Vaupel sac fly, scoring Holub from third. The Gorillas scored one in the sixth to take the lead, 5-4, before the Tiger seventh inning rally.

Blue Jays Rally Late To Hand Royals 8th Straight Loss

Kansas City Royals left fielder Alex Gordon (4) connects for a double in the third inning of the game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Kauffman Stadium. Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jose Bautista knocked in the go-ahead run in Toronto’s three-run eighth inning, as the Blue Jays kept the Royals winless at Kauffman Stadium with a 4-3 victory in the opener of a four-game series.

Toronto rallied against reliever Greg Holland (0-2) to extend Kansas City’s franchise-worst start at home to 0-7. The Royals have dropped eight in a row overall.

J.P. Arencibia went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs for the Blue Jays, who were coming off a 4-5 homestand.

Luis Perez (2-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win behind Kyle Drabek, who allowed four hits and six walks over 5 1/3 innings, but limited the Royals to two runs — one coming on Mike Moustakas’ home run.

Kansas City’s Luke Hochevar, whose start was pushed back so he could rest a sore ankle, pitched an effective five innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while fanning five.

He exited with a 2-1 lead that held up before Holland’s forgettable appearance in the eighth. Colby Rasums greeted the reliever with a double and scored on Arencibia’s base hit up the middle.

After Yunel Escobar walked, Holland was called for a balk to open up first base, and the Blue Jays opted to intentionally walk Kelly Johnson to face the dangerous Bautista.

The two-time reigning home run champion responded by going the other way with an outside pitch for a single, plating the go-ahead run.

Jose Mijares mercifully relieved Holland and limited the Blue Jays to one more run on Edwin Encarnacion’s sacrifice fly.

Francisco Cordero worked around a leadoff walk in the home eighth, but closer Sergio Santos gave up a run in the ninth before closing the door for his second save.

Alcides Escobar doubled with one away and scored on Yuniesky Betancourt’s two- out base hit. Chris Getz pinch-ran for Betancourt and stole second to get in scoring position, but Eric Hosmer, who lined into a triple play earlier in the game, grounded out weakly to second to end the game.

In the top of the second, Moustakas robbed Encarnacion of a base hit, and in the bottom half drove a Drabek offering into the bullpen beyond the right- field wall for the game’s first run.

A rarity for both teams occurred in the third when Hosmer lined into a triple play. Blue Jays first baseman Adam Lind caught the ball on the fly near his cleats, tagged first base to force out Betancourt, then threw to second to nab Alex Gordon sliding back to the bag.

“It was so fast it was over,” Lind said.

It was the first time the Blue Jays turned a triple play since 1979, the same year the Royals last hit into a triple play.

“It was a fastball in right there. I saw it good and put a good swing on it. The result wasn’t was I was hoping,” Hosmer mused.

Undaunted, Kansas City added a run in the fourth when Jeff Francoeur raced home from third after Arencibia couldn’t handle Drabek’s 60-foot slider in the dirt.

Arencibia got the run back in the fifth with a base hit in front of center fielder Mitch Maier to bring in Eric Thames from second base.

Solid Pitching Lifts FHSU Baseball To Sweep Of Southwest Baptist

Alex Ellison allows three runs over eight innings in FHSU's 5-3 win in game two at Southwest Baptist Friday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo.

The Fort Hays State baseball team claimed a pair of crucial victories at Southwest Baptist on Friday afternoon by scores of 4-1 and 5-3. Solid starts by Shawn Lewick and Alex Ellison coupled with Brett Macari to close out both games proved to be the winning combination for the Tigers in the first two games of the weekend series. FHSU improved to 21-18 overall and 18-15 in the MIAA with the wins.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 4, Southwest Baptist 1
FHSU starting pitcher Shawn Lewick and SBU starter Tyler Burnett were locked in a pitcher’s dual through the first three innings, with Lewick surrendering the only hit of the game to that point.

However, Burnett finally ran into trouble in the fourth as a Ryan Busboom double, the first hit of the game for FHSU, would lead to an RBI single by Mace Krol to put FHSU up 1-0. FHSU eventually loaded the bases with two outs in the inning, but could not push any more runs across.

FHSU went back to work at the plate in the fifth, scoring three runs. A pair of singles by Sheldon Howell and JC Ochoa and a Busboom walk set up a two-RBI single by Brandon Hoefler. The Tigers would load the bases again and Jay Sanders drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0.

That would be plenty for Lewick, as he surrendered just one run in 6.1 innings. He allowed six hits and walked just one with six strikeouts.

After Lewick retired the first batter of the seventh inning, he allowed back-to-back singles. Brett Macari came in and immediately slammed the door on the rally by inducing a ground ball double play to end the game. Macari recorded his fifth save of the season.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 5, Southwest Baptist 3
The Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back RBI singles by Ryan Busboom and Mace Krol in the first inning. The lead grew to 3-0 in the top of the third on an RBI double by Mace Krol, knocking in Sheldon Howell who doubled to start the inning.

FHSU starter Alex Ellison held the Bearcats scoreless in the first two innings, but finally surrendered a run in the third and a pair in the fourth, which tied the game up at 3-3.

Ellison and SBU starter Mike Nielebeck settled in after allowing the early runs to each give their teams 8.0 innings. However, the Tigers finally got to Nielebeck again in the eighth rallying with two outs in the inning. A Ryan Busboom double led to an RBI single by Krol and then an RBI double by Brandon Hoefler. Ellison worked around a leadoff double by the Bearcats in the eighth to keep the score at 5-3 heading to the ninth.

Brett Macari entered to slam the door on the Bearcats once again for his sixth save of the season. He allowed just one hit in the ninth with two outs before getting a pop out to end the game.

The Tigers jumped back over Missouri Southern in the MIAA standings on Friday with the pair of wins and now sits just a half-game back of Emporia State and Washburn for third place.

Royals Drop 7th Straight

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez (57)-US PRESSWIRE
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Manager Ned Yost was second guessing
himself after the Kansas City Royals’ 4-3 loss Wednesday night to
the Detroit Tigers.
The Royals have lost seven straight, including their first six
games at Kauffman Stadium, the most consecutive home losses in
franchise history to start a season. The Royals lost their first
five at home in 1993.
Prince Fielder drove in the go-ahead run with two out in the
seventh with a single off left-handed reliever Jose Mijares. After
Gerald Laird scored and Miguel Cabrera advanced to second on a wild
pitch, Yost opted to pitch to Fielder instead of walking him
intentionally.
“The first time it was just a good case of hitting,” Yost said
of Cabrera’s single to beat a shift. “The second time was pure
stupidity on my part, plain and simple that’s what it was. After
the wild pitch, they had a runner on second. I started to overthink
the situation. I know how aggressive Prince can be with runners in
scoring position. If we can expand a little bit, we might get him
to chase, hit into the shift.
“That was just a dumb decision. I should have just walked him
with the situation after the wild pitch. It might have been a
situation we got out of there 3-3. I take the blame on that, full
responsibility for just not being very smart.”
He had Louis Coleman warmed up in the bullpen to face Delmon
Young, who flied out to end the inning. But by the time Coleman
entered, it was too late as Fielder’s single proved to be the game
winner.
Royals left-hander Jonathan Sanchez, who was starting on three
days rest for only the fourth time in his career, pitched out of a
bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth. Fielder reached on
Sanchez’s error to start the inning. Delmon Young singled and Ryan
Raburn walked to load the bases. Sanchez retired Jhonny Peralta and
Brandon Inge on infield flies and Gerald Laird flied out to center.
Sanchez left after five innings and 97 pitches, giving up two
runs on four hits, while striking out three and walking three.
Peralta singled in the second for the first Detroit run, and
Fielder’s two-out fifth inning double to right-center scored the
other run off Sanchez.
Jose Valverde worked the ninth for his third save in four
chances. Valverde got Alcides Escobar, who hit a two-run homer in
the third, to ground into a game-ending double play.
“Sanchez did a nice job of getting us through five with the
lead,” Yost said. “We just kind of lost it in the seventh inning.
We just can’t catch a break. Escobar hits the ball hard down the
line, but they’re playing no doubles in that situation to end the
game. We’ll keep plugging away until we get it turned around.
“We tried to play the percentages on the shift, but when
they’ve got hitters of that caliber they work against the shift
sometimes. The percentages just didn’t come out in our favor.”
Max Scherzer (1-1), who had given up 10 runs on 13 hits and
three walks in 8 2-3 innings in his first two starts, held the
Royals to three runs on seven hits and one walk in six-plus
innings. Scherzer, an All-Big 12 selection while at Missouri,
lowered his earned run average from 10.38 to 7.98.
The dugouts and bullpens emptied briefly in the bottom of the
seventh when Quintero was hit by Scherzer’s pitch to lead off the
inning. Laird had words with Quintero after he threw his bat at the
catcher’s feet before going to first base, which led to the players
streaming onto the field. Words were exchanged, but no punches.

Tigers Late Rally Sends Royals To 6th Straight Loss

Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Bruce Chen (52) delivers a pitch in the first inning against the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium. Denny Medley-US PRESSWIRE

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder each hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to lift the Detroit Tigers over the Kansas City Royals, 3-1, in the middle portion of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium.

Ramon Santiago knocked in the other run for Detroit, while Octavio Dotel (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Jose Valverde shut the door in the ninth for his second save of the season.

Drew Smyly made his second career start and allowed an unearned run on seven hits and a walk for the Tigers, who earned their third straight win.

Bruce Chen (0-1) gave up two runs on six hits through seven-plus innings to take the loss. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk in the Royals’ sixth consecutive loss.

“It’s no fun going through it when you lose six in a row, your first five games at home when you had so much enthusiasm coming home,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “It’s not fun to do that, but you can’t panic.”

Chen had retired the previous 13 batters he faced before Andy Dirks led off the eighth inning with a base hit.

Greg Holland then entered in relief and fanned Austin Jackson before allowing three straight singles to Brennan Boesch, Cabrera and Fielder, scoring Dirks and Boesch for a 3-1 Tigers lead.

“We know we have a shot no matter what the score is,” said Dirks. “We’ve got good enough hitters where we can put runs up quick and we did what we had to do today.”

Jeff Francoeur hit a two-out triple off Joaquin Benoit in the bottom of the eighth when Boesch made a diving miss of a sinking liner to right field, but Mike Moustakas went down swinging to end the inning.

Valverde then brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after allowing a one-out walk to Brayan Pena. But he struck out Alcides Escobar before inducing an Alex Gordon grounder to first to end the game.

Detroit struck first in the second inning after Delmon Young led off the frame with a base hit and Ryan Raburn followed two batters later with a double down the third-base line to place runners on second and third.

Santiago stepped up next and lifted a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Young, but that would be all the Tigers would get as Dirks hit a pop up behind home plate to strand Raburn.

Kansas City answered with a run in the third inning when Escobar hit a hard liner back at Smyly that bounced off the pitcher’s back. Smyly managed to recover and field the ball, but his throw to first bounced well short of the bag and went wide to the right, allowing Escobar to moved to second on the error.

Gordon followed with a base hit into center field to score Escobar.

Kansas City then stranded a man in scoring position in the fourth and sixth and a man at third in the seventh.

FHSU Baseball Picks Up Non-conference Win Over Nebraska-Kearney

Sheldon Howell had three hits and drove in four in Fort Hays State's 12-8 win over Nebraska-Kearney Tuesday at Larks Park.

For the first time since winning their season opener at West Texas A&M back on February 24th, the Fort Hays State baseball team is above .500. The Tigers moved to 19-18 with a 12-8 win over Nebraska-Kearney in non-conference play on Tuesday evening at Larks Park in Hays, Kan. THe Tigers head to Bolivar, Mo. for a four-game MIAA series with Southwest Baptist starting with a doubleheader Friday.

Steve Johnson Post Game Interview:
post4-17-12

Game Highlights:
highlights4-17-12

FHSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. JC Ochoa had an RBI single, then later scored from second on a failed pick off attempt by UNK starter Ross Mortensen that went into center field. Sheldon Howell had an RBI double in the second inning.

Starter Tyler Treinen did not allow a hit to his first seven batters faced. He ran into some trouble in the third though. After retiring the first batter of the inning, Treinen hit two and allowed a single over the next three batters to load the bases. He picked up the second out before allowing a wild pitch, then a pair of singles that tied the game. Tayler Davis entered in relief to get the final out of the inning and keep the game tied.

FHSU took the lead back briefly in the bottom of the third on a Luke Kordsmeier RBI single, his first RBI this year that was not on a home run. However, Kearney struck again for two runs against Davis in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. That would be the only lead of the night held by UNK.

Mace Krol delivered a big blow for the Tigers in the bottom of the fourth with a grand slam, his ninth home run of the season and second consecutive that was a grand slam. He had a grand slam against Truman this past weekend on Saturday. The Tigers went up 8-5 on his shot to right field over the scoreboard. It was the fourth grand slam hit by the Tigers this season.

The Lopers cut back into the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth to make it 8-7. Tayler Davis was responsible for the first run, but FHSU held on to the lead from that point on, so he picked up his first win of the season. Sam Thornton and Casey Pierce picked up the three outs in the fifth to preserve the win opportunity for Davis.

FHSU added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly RBI by Brett Macari. He and Kyle Leroy would be instrumental in holding the Lopers at bay the rest of the way.

Leroy pitched the sixth and seventh innings, allowing one run in the Lopers in the seventh. He got a ground ball double play in the seventh to limit the Lopers to just one run with a bases-loaded, no-out situation.

FHSU picked up a pair of runs in the seventh on a Howell 2-RBI double down the left field line before turning to closer Brett Macari in the eighth and ninth. Macari did not allow a hit and struck out two over the final two innings to record his fourth save of the season. FHSU scored once more in the eighth when Howell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Tigers are currently in sixth place in the MIAA standings at 16-15 entering the four-game series at Southwest Baptist this weekend, but just a half game back of Missouri Southern for fifth and one and a half games back of Washburn and Emporia State for third.

Hays High Softball Sweep Colby

The Hays High Indians swept Colby in a softball double header in Hays on Tuesday night.  The Indians moved to 10-0 on the season, while Colby dropped to 5-3.  The Eagles have had to endure three rain-outs already this season.  Though the teams used the same lineups in each game, the games themselves were wildly different.

Coach Maska Post-game interview:
Coach postgame interview
Game 1: Hays 2, Colby 0
Hays High’s Katelyn Schumacher got the nod in game one allowing only one hit in seven innings of shut out ball.  Colby though had their chances stranding nine runners and had the bases loaded with one out in each the fourth and fifth innings.  The Eagles had the chances to score despite Schumacher striking out 14 in the game including seven of the first nine batters.  However Katelyn walked four and hit two batters.

The offense was provided by a towering solo home run in the third inning, that she hit into the teeth of the wind, and a RBI single of the nine hitter Haley Wells.

Schumacher moved to 4-0 on the season and 19-3 in her career at Hays High.
