Fort Hays State Football hits the road this weekend for a road contest at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. FHSU enters the game 6-2, while Lincoln is 1-7. The Tigers are looking for their seventh straight win after an 0-2 start to the year, and their seventh straight win in the series history with the Blue Tigers.

The Tigers look to stay alive in the conference championship race and NCAA Playoff picture. FHSU is two games back of MIAA-leading Central Missouri and just one back of second-place Northwest Missouri State. If the Tigers are going to make the NCAA Playoffs for a third straight year, winning their final three regular season games is most likely the only option. FHSU enters this week ranked No. 9 in the Super Region 3 rankings. The top seven in the super region will make the NCAA Playoffs and the Tigers have seven teams with one loss or less in front of them, as well as a two-loss Missouri Western team that they lost to early in the season.

Fort Hays State and Lincoln are meeting for the first time since the 2013 season, the last year Lincoln was a member of the MIAA before coming back into the conference this season with the departure of Lindenwood. The Blue Tigers played as members of the GLVC from 2014-2018 while absent from the MIAA in football. FHSU won that 2013 meeting 45-35. FHSU has traditionally seen close battles with Lincoln. The previous three meetings between FHSU and Lincoln in MIAA play were decided by 10 points or less, all going to FHSU in the win column.

Offensively, the Tigers have scored at least 30 points in six of eight games this season. FHSU is coming off a 37-31 win over Nebraska-Kearney at home last week. The Tigers are averaging 37 points in four road games so far this year, scoring at least 30 in all four.

Lincoln began the season 0-6 before claiming its first win of the year over a winless Northeastern State squad in Week 7 by a score of 27-9. The Blue Tigers have allowed at least 38 points in all seven of their losses this year. Lincoln is coming off a 56-9 loss at Northwest Missouri State last week. Running back Hosea Franklin accounts for over 50 percent of Lincoln’s total offense. He is the only player in the MIAA with over 1,000 rushing yards this season with 1,048 through eight games. He averages 131 yards per game on the ground.

Chance Fuller is the triggerman for the Tiger offense. FHSU ranks 10th in the nation in passing offense, averaging 314.3 yards per game through the air. Individually Fuller averages 306.5 passing yards per game, which ranks ninth in NCAA Division II. He has 2,452 passing yards with 25 touchdowns so far this year. Harley Hazlett, Manny Ramsey, and Layne Bieberle have been a triple threat of targets for Fuller. Hazlett leads the team in receiving yards with 673, followed by Ramsey with 596 and Bieberle with 589. Charles Tigner leads the Tiger ground game with 643 rushing yards, going over 100 yards in a game three times this season.

Defensively, Drew Harvey leads the Tigers in tackles with 69, followed by Tanner Hoekman with 67 and Jordan Starks with 64. The aforementioned trio has six of the team’s 10 interceptions this season. Sheldon Schmidt continues to lead the team in sacks with three.

TMP ends season with rout of Ellinwood

ELLINWOOD – The TMP-Marian Monarchs closed out the 2019 season with a 54-0 win over Ellinwood Friday night in Ellinwood.

Coach Jay Harris

It took the Monarch offense a little bit to get going Friday night, turning it over on downs on their first possession, but on their second possession they needed just two plays to cover 46 yards and they took a 7-0 lead thanks to a two-yard Kade Harris touchdown run.

Harris scored three rushing touchdowns and scored seven in the final two games of the season.

Already leading 7-0 the Monarchs put together an eight-play, 60-yard drive that ended with a two-yard TD run for Colby Dreiling to give TMP the 14-0 lead. Dreiling finished with two scores in the ground in the game.

Harris added his second first-half rushing touchdown with just over a minute left in the second quarter as TMP took a 20-0 lead, after failing to convert a two-point try.

On Ellinwood’s next possession they ran just two plays for Harris intercepted Eagles quarterback Kyle Doll with 1:03 to play in the first half.

TMP wasted little time and got on the board four the fourth time in the first half when Harris found Jace Wentling for a 17-yard score that gave TMP a 26-0 lead at the break.

In the second half Harris found Dreiling for a one-yard touchdown, Dreiling and Harris both added fourth quarter rushing touchdowns and Andrew Schwartz capped off the game with his first career rushing touchdown as TMP rolled to the 54-0 win.

Harris was 11-for-16 passing for 163 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 138 yards and three scores.

TMP finishes the second 3-6 for the third straight year. Ellinwood finishes the season 1-8.

High School Area Game of the Week: Sacred Heart @ Plainville

The second night of the Area Game of the Week double header saw the Sacred Heart Knights visiting the Plainville Cardinals. The Knights entered the game at 0-8 and the Cardinals held a 7-1 mark, ranking 3rd in 1A.

The Cardinals received the ball first and found pay dirt when Jared Casey scampered for a 54-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. The extra point was no good and Plainville led 6-0. Sacred Heart was forced to punt on their first drive, and the Plainville offense went to work quickly finding another rushing touchdown, this one from quarterback Jordan Finnesy.

Finnesy and Casey each added another touchdown in the quarter, pushing the score to 28-0 in favor of the Cardinals. Jordan Finnesy made a big play right before the end of the quarter, intercepting a 3rd down pass form Sacred Heart quarterback Mac Hemmer, and running it in for a touchdown. The score after one was 35-0 in favor of Plainville.

The Cardinals tacked on two more touchdowns to make the score 49-0 at the half. That meant running clock for the duration of the second half. Coach Grant Stephenson elected to rest Casey, Finnesy, and several other starters for the games final two quarters. The two teams exchanged touchdowns in the time-shortened  second half, resulting in a 56-7 victory for Plainville.

Jared Casey finished with 163 yards and 3 touchdowns on 9 carries. Jordan Finnesy had a well-rounded performance, rushing for two touchdwons, passing for one, and retruning an interception for one. Sacred Heart quarterback Mac Hemmer was 11/21 through the air for 63 yards. His second-half touchdown run gave the Knights their only score.

Sacred Heart finishes the season 0-9. However, the Knights return Mac Hemmer and several other key players to next year’s squad.

Plainville moves to 8-1 on the season and will host Ell-Saline next Friday in Plainville. Ell-Saline is 7-2 on the season. Plainville has ousted Ell-Saline from the post-season the last 2 seasons.

FHSU women’s basketball battles K-State in exhibition game

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women’s basketball team kept pace with a talented K-State squad for much of the night before falling 78-60 in exhibition play Friday at Bramlage Coliseum. After trailing by as many as 17 early in the third quarter, the Tigers closed within three early in the fourth before the Wildcats pulled away down the stretch.

The Tigers were well balanced on offense, with 11 of the 12 Tigers that played scoring at least one point. Belle Barbieri and Jaden Hobbs led the team with 10 points each. Allison McFarren (nine points), Taylor Rolfs (seven), Kacey Kennett (six) and Whitney Randall (five) also scored at least five points on the night.

K-State’s size advantage was evident on the stat sheet, with the Wildcats outrebounding FHSU 53-27 and outscoring the Tigers in the paint 36-22.

In addition to leading the team in scoring, Barbieri also paced the team with five rebounds and four assists. McFarren was the only Tiger to knock down multiple shots from behind the arc, drilling 3-of-6 of her 3-point attempts.

Kennett knocked down a pair of jumpers in a span of 22 seconds thanks to a steal from Rolfs to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead less than two minutes into the game, FHSU’s only lead of the night.

After trailing by as many as five, a layup from Rolfs early in the second quarter helped the Tigers close within one, 18-17. K-State started to pull away over the heart of the second quarter, using a 17-5 run to go in front by 13, 37-24. McFarren ended an 8-0 Wildcat run with a 3-pointer before Rolfs made another steal and knocked down a triple of her own, trimming the deficit to seven in just 11 seconds.

After leading by 10 at halftime, 41-31, K-State scored the first seven points of the second half to pad the lead to 17. The Black and Gold responded with a 16-4 run over the final 7:32 of the third quarter, closing within five with 10 minutes to play. While the rest of the team took advantage of trips to the charity stripe, hitting 6-of-8 free throws, both Hobbs and Madison Mittie knocked down 3-pointers to give the Tigers some life.

Hobbs scored on a layup after a dish from Barbieri on the first possession of the final quarter to close within one possession, 52-49, before the home team finished things off thanks to a 26-11 run. K-State hit 10-of-18 from the floor during the final stretch to secure the victory.

After knocking down 40 percent (12-of-30) from the floor in the opening half, the Tigers finished the game with a shooting percentage of 33.9 percent (21-of-62). FHSU hit 6-of-17 from deep, good for 35.3 percent. The Tigers created 21 Wildcat turnovers while turning the ball over just 15 times. Both teams were credited with nine steals.

The Tigers open the season next weekend in St. Joseph, Mo. against two of the top teams from the NSIC, both of whom won 20 or more games last year. The regular season opens against Minnesota Duluth, who reached the NCAA DII Tournament last year, on Friday (Nov. 8) at 1:30 p.m. FHSU wraps up the opening weekend against Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. Both games will be played inside the St. Joseph Civic Arena.

Hays Indians pick up win at Eisenhower

Hays High traveled to Goddard on Friday night to take on the Eisenhower Tigers for week nine bracket play and the opportunity for their season to continue.

The Indians avoided disaster in the first quarter.  Eisenhower was forced to punt after just three plays to start the game but the ball hit an Indian past the line of scrimmage and recovered by the Tigers hear midfield.  Hays quickly turned the tables.  Trey Adams intercepted a pass on third down to set up the Indians at the 47 yard line.  The first offensive play of the game for Hays was a hand off to Jaren Kanak who went around the left end for 53 yards.  The extra point from Matt Goodale gave Hays a 7-0 lead.

Eisenhower threatened to score several times in the first half.  During the second quarter the Tigers started with the ball inside Hays territory on three straight possessions.  The first resulted in a Eisenhower punt.  Hays muffed the punt inside the ten yard line but recovered the ball.  The Tigers then took over at the Hays 29 yard line and would punch the ball into the end zone on a third down pass from the ten yard line.  Trey Adams blocked the extra point preserving a 7-6 lead.

Hays fielded a pooch kick at the 39 yard line but lost 18 yards on the drive and following a short punt Eisenhower took over at the 26.  The Tigers scored a touchdown on the first play of the drive but was called back for holding.  Three plays later Dawson VonFeldt intercepted pass at the five to keep the score 7-6 in favor of the Indians at the half.

Highlights

The entire second half belonged to the Indians.  Hays took the opening possession of the second half 11 plays that resulted in a career long 42 yard field goal from Matt Goodale and a 10-6 lead.  Eisenhower punted away the ball on the next possession and the Indians took advantage.  Hays drove into the red zone for the first time on the night and eventually scored on a six yard run by Hayden Brown following a pass interference call on an attempted catch by Jaren Kanak.

Leading 17-6 Gaven Haselhorst jumped on top of a fumble on the ensuing kick off return by Eisenhower.  Hays again controlled the clock and worked the ball to the 23 yard line. On fourth and one and moving into the wind the Indians went for the conversion.  The play ended in the end zone with a Hayden Brown touchdown and a 24-6 lead.  Dalton Dale intercepted a pass on the next drive inside Eishenhower territory.  The Indians responded with a fake field goal ten yard touchdown pass from Tucker Veatch to Trey Adams the final 31-6 score.

Coach Tony Crough

Hays High will play Maize South next week following the Mavericks 31-0 win over Salina South.  Hays is 4-5 while the second seeded Maverick are 9-0.

Hays improves to 4-1 on the road.

FHSU women’s basketball opens preseason at K-State

Coming off the best season in the program’s NCAA Division II history, the Fort Hays State women’s basketball team opens exhibition play for the 2019-20 season Friday when the Tigers travel to Manhattan, Kan. to play Kansas State. First tip is set for 6:30 p.m. inside Bramlage Coliseum, with tickets available for as low as $5.

This is the sixth meeting between the Tigers and Wildcats in exhibition play, with K-State coming away victorious in all five previous contests. This is the third year in a row that FHSU has made the trip to Manhattan for a preseason matchup. The Tigers kept things close in a defensive battle one year ago to the day, leading by as many as nine late in the third quarter before coming up two points short, 48-46 (11/1/18). Kacey Kennett averages 9.5 points per game in two trips to Manhattan.

FHSU and K-State played annually during the infancy of both programs, with the Wildcats leading the regular season series 11-2. The last regular season matchup was played in 1976.

Fort Hays State returns 10 letterwinners from last year’s squad that finished 32-2, the most wins in a season during the DII era. The Tigers won both regular season and MIAA tournament titles and reached the regional championship game. Among the returners are three All-MIAA performers in Kacey Kennett (second team), Lanie Page (third team) and Belle Barbieri. Four newcomers, including two transfers and two true freshmen, round out this year’s roster.

Two Tigers have strong K-State ties in Madison Mittie and Lanie Page. Mittie’s father, Jeff Mittie, is in his sixth season as head coach at Kansas State. He has led the Wildcats to the postseason each of the last five seasons, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament and a pair of WNIT appearances. Page played for Mittie two years in Manhattan, redshirting her first year before appearing in 25 games in 2016-17.

K-State returns nine letterwinners from last year’s squad that finished 21-12 and qualified for the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Peyton Williams and Rachel Ranke were selected as preseason All-Big 12 honorees this season, while Williams and Christianna Carr return after earning All-Big 12 accolades last year. The Wildcats opened exhibition play with a 75-59 win over Washburn on Tuesday (Oct. 29).

Area Game of the Week: Quinter @ Thunder Ridge

BY JACOB BRUBAKER
Hays Post

KENSINGTON — Week 9 brought bracket game action to the Area Game of the Week as the Quinter Bulldogs, who placed 3rd in District 6, payed a visit to District 5 runner-up Thunder Ridge Longhorns. Thunder Ridge entered the game at 7-1, while Quinter’s record stood at 3-5.

The Longhorns where the first to receive the ball and they wasted little time in putting up points as senior Reece Struckhoff scampered for a 55 yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage. The ensuing conversion was good, making the score 8-0 in favor of the home team.

The first possession for Quinter resulted in a fumble, recovered by the Longhorns. Several plays later, Struckhoff found Dylan Bice open in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. The conversion failed, but Quinter gave up a safety on the next possession, resulting in a 16-0 Longhorn lead less than 3 minutes into the game.

The Bulldogs continued to fight, but struggled to get any offense going throughout the remainder of the first half. Quinter was forced to punt 5 times in the first half, allowing Thunder Ridge to build a 44-0 lead with a minute and a half remaining in the first half. The Longhorns forced another punt to get the ball back with just under a minute. Thunder Ridge turned to a passing attack to try to find another score. They found it with just around 30 seconds left when Dylan Bice found Reece Struckhoff on a 12-yard touchdown pass to put the Longhorns ahead 50-0. That’s how the score would stay, ending the game at the half by the 45-point rule.

Quinter’s offense struggled to get going as star running back Tucker Gillespie finished with 9 carries for 11 yards, he contributed a fumble recovery on defense.

Reece Struckhoff finished with an impressive 218 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns on 10 carries. He also was 2/4 passing for 78 yards and a score. Struckhoff totaled 7 touchdowns, with his final score being a receiving touchdown. Dylan Bice added 65 yards receiving with a touchdown catch, he also threw for 101 yards and a touchdown. The Longhorn defense grabbed 3 interceptions, including one by Dalton Bice, who also had 2 tackles for loss.

The Quinter Bulldogs end their season at 3-6. The Bulldogs have reason for optimism heading into next season as they only have 2 seniors on the roster and should return a good core of position players.

The Thunder Ridge Longhorns hit the road next week to take on the champion of District 6, Grinnell-Wheatland. The Thunderhawks defeated Northern Valley 44-30 to set up a battle of 8-1 teams with the Longhorns.

FHSU women’s basketball team opens season ranked in Top 10 nationally

FHSU Athletics

The Fort Hays State women’s basketball team is ranked in the top 10 in both preseason national polls, opening the year third in the D2SIDA Media Poll and seventh in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll. This is the highest the Tigers have been listed in either preseason poll.

Fort Hays State is one of two MIAA programs listed in both polls, with Central Missouri opening the year 11th in the coaches poll and 15th according to the media. Emporia State is just outside the coaches top 25 and is the lone MIAA school in the receiving votes category.

The D2SIDA weekly poll also includes a regional ranking, with the Tigers opening the year ranked No. 1. FHSU received five of the six possible first-place votes in the regional standings.

This is the eighth straight season the Tigers have been recognized in the national polls, and the ninth year overall. The Tigers are 83-24 all-time when ranked in the WBCA Top 25, including a 79-23 mark under Tony Hobson. FHSU is 5-0 all-time when ranked seventh in the WBCA poll.

The Tigers have now been ranked in a preseason poll three times since joining Division II. The Tigers opened last year 12th in the coaches poll and 22nd in the media poll, while FHSU entered the 2015-16 season ranked 10th in both polls after the last run to the regional title game in 2014-15.

Fort Hays State opens exhibition play Friday (Nov. 1) against Kansas State before traveling to St. Joseph, Mo. to open the regular season on Friday, November 8 against Minnesota Duluth.

Royals name Matheny manager

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have hired Mike Matheny as manager.

The 49-year-old Matheny was manager of the cross-state St. Louis Cardinals from 2012-18, going 591-474 and becoming the first manager to reach the postseason his first four seasons. The Cardinals reached the World Series in 2013, losing to the Boston Red Sox.

Matheny was fired in July 2018 with the Cardinals 7½ games out of the NL Central race at the time. He was hired last November by the Royals as a special adviser for player development, putting him in place to succeed Royals manager Ned Yost.

Yost announced his retirement last month.

No. 20 FHSU men’s soccer ranked seventh in NCAA Super Region

INDIANAPOLIS – No. 20 Fort Hays State men’s soccer is placed seventh out of 10 teams in the first installment of the NCAA 2019 super region rankings. FHSU is represented in super region three.

In prior years, the soccer rankings have been separated into eight smaller regions (Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast, and West). For the 2019 campaign, the NCAA has transitioned to a postseason format of Super Regions – an expanded version of the previous regional format. The men’s soccer committee will select 10 teams to represent each super region.

The NCAA men’s soccer committee will continue to release two more editions of the super region rankings. The next edit will be made on Wednesday, Nov. 6 and the final selections on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

Two Tiger opponents have entered into the super region ranks. Maryville University (Mo.) clocks in at No. 5 in super region three, posting a record of 12-2-2. While Eastern New Mexico has been slated in the 10th spot in super region four.

Fort Hays State began the season with a 3-0 victory at home over Rockhurst, followed by a tough stretch of matches consisting of three losses to Eastern New Mexico, Maryville (who was ranked No. 19), and Regis University. Since those games, the Tigers have headed out on a dominant streak of nine wins, one loss, and one tie.

With just three games left to play in the regular season, the Black and Gold are set to travel to Wichita, Kan. to face off against Newman before ending their season in Hays, Kan. against Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene.
