Three Denver Broncos Headed To Pro Bowl

Three Broncos will be adding a little pineapple to their diet next month, one for the first time.

Champ Bailey, Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller were voted to the 2012 Pro Bowl, it was announced Tuesday. Bailey and Miller are starters. Dumervil, currently a reserve, might end up a starter as New England’s Andre Carter — who is on injured reserve — is slated to be a Pro Bowl starter ahead of him.

“It’s always exciting when you have guys going to the Pro Bowl,” Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said. “They’re three guys that are very deserving.”

Tim Tebow, Willis McGahee, Ryan Clady, Brian Dawkins Matt Prater and Britton Colquitt are alternates for the all-star game.

The selection is Bailey’s 11th, extending the record he set last season for trips by a cornerback. It makes him one of just six players in NFL history with that many selections.

It’s also Bailey’s seventh Pro Bowl as a Bronco, which ties him for third in franchise history with Shannon Sharpe and Randy Gradishar. Only Elway and Steve Atwater went to more withDenver.

“Champ is obviously a guy that has tremendous respect around the league,” Elway said. “Again, it just shows with this 11th Pro Bowl what people think of him around the league, but also he continues to play at a Pro Bowl level. It’s great for him as well as the Broncos.”

Dumervil, who suffered an injury before the team’s season-opener against the Oakland Raiders and was hampered early in the year, will make his second trip.

The defensive end recovered from the injury quickly and is currently on an eight-game streak of notching at least a half sack. For the season, he has 9.5 quarterback takedowns.

“This year is one of those examples — you never stop, you never quit,” Dumervil said. “It’s all about how you finish.”

Two years ago, Dumervil made the Pro Bowl — which was held in his hometown of Miami— before missing all of last season with a pectoral injury.

That’s why he said this selection means even more to him.

“The first one is your first, so it’s special in that way,” he said. “But this year is different with the adversity and playing through pain, and to be able to give the team a chance to go to the playoffs. This one means a lot, to overcome that adversity.”

Dumervil’s partner in crime, Miller, will be making his first trip to the Pro Bowl.

Miller currently leads all AFC rookies with 11.5 sacks.

“I’m so happy for him,” Dumervil said. “He worked for it and he definitely earned it. Coming in as the No. 2 pick is a lot of pressure and a lot of hype and he delivered. A lot of guys can’t handle the pressure, but he’s had a great year. He’s been banged up with his thumb but he’s definitely been a Pro Bowler and he deserves it.”

K-State’s McGruder Big 12 Player Of The Week

(AP Photo/Eugene Tanner)

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Junior Rodney McGruder followed up his most valuable player performance at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic with his first Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week award on Monday.

McGruder helped the Wildcats (10-1) capture their first regular-season tournament since 2006 with wins over Southern Illinois (83-58), Texas-El Paso (78-70) and Long Beach State (77-60) and their first ranking of the season.  He averaged 15.0 points on 64 percent shooting (16-of-25), including 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from 3-point range, in the tournament with 6.0 rebounds in 24.3 minutes per game.  He scored in double figures in two of the three contests, including a career-best 28 points in the championship game with the 49ers on Sunday.

McGruder opened the tournament with 13 points in a victory over the Salukis on Dec. 22, as he connected on 4-of-7 field goals to go with six rebounds, one block and one steal in 28 minutes of action.  He also went 3-of-4 from the free throw line.  He struggled from the field against the Miners in game two on Dec. 23 with just four points on 2-of-7 shooting, but did grab six rebounds in the eight-point victory.

With the tournament title on the line, McGruder came through with his best effort as a Wildcat, as he paced all players with a career-high 28 points against Long Beach State on Christmas Day.  He went a near perfect 10-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, to go with a 6-of-7 effort from the free throw line.  He also added six rebounds and a steal in 25 minutes.  The 28 points surpassed his previous high of 24 against UMKC on Dec. 23, 2010, while it was his 20th career 20-point game and his third this season.

Remarkably, by making 10-of-11 field goals, he posted one of the best shooting nights by an individual in school history.  Only Joe Wright (11-of-11 vs. Oklahoma State on Jan. 23, 1985) and Eddie Elder (11-of-11 vs. Colorado on Feb. 23, 1985) had a better field goal percentage in a game in school history when attempting more than 10 shots.  A perfect shooting effort (with a minimum of five attempts) has been done eight other times at K-State.

McGruder paces four Wildcats in double figures with a team-high 12.4 points per game on 44.1 percent shooting to go with 5.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 30.1 minutes per game.  He is the third Wildcat to receive a weekly award this season.  Senior Jamar Samuels was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Dec. 5, while freshman Thomas Gipson was the league’s Rookie of the Week on Dec. 12.

The Wildcats went on a 29-13 run for a 38-22 lead with 2:27 left in the first half. McGruder had eight points, including two 3-pointers, during the surge.

In the first half, the Wildcats shot 17 of 33, forced 10 turnovers and outscored the 49ers 22-10 in the paint. McGruder finished the half with 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting. He missed nearly 5 minutes after being injured while taking a charge.

Defense Comes Up Huge As Bills Rip Broncos

Orchard Park, NY – The Bills picked off Tim Tebow four times, two of which were returned for touchdowns in the fourth quarter, as Buffalo rolled over the playoff-hopeful Broncos, 40-14.

Denver (8-7), which has lost two straight following a 7-1 stretch, entered week 16 with a one-game lead over the Chargers and Raiders atop the AFC West. Oakland defeated the Chiefs in overtime Saturday to join Denver atop the division, while the Chargers are currently playing the Lions.

Jairus Byrd and Spencer Johnson each took back interceptions for touchdowns, and Leodis McKelvin returned a punt 80 yards for a score to help the Bills (6-9) end a seven-game losing streak in emphatic fashion.

C.J. Spiller ran for a career-high 111 yards and a TD, while Ryan Fitzpatrick tossed for 196 yards on 15-of-27 attempts in the victory.

The Bills played mistake-free and forced Tebow into throwing twice as many interceptions (four) as he had since taking over under center in Week 7 (two).

Tebow completed 13-of-30 passes for 185 yards, ran for a touchdown and threw for another, but his woes started in the final minute of the third when he overthrew Demaryius Thomas.

Justin Rogers’s interception led to Dave Rayner’s 29-yard field goal for a 26-14 lead, and after trading punts, Byrd stepped in front of Tebow’s pass over the middle and took it back 37 yards for a touchdown with 8:03 remaining.

On the next play from scrimmage, Chris Kelsay hit Tebow’s arm as the quarterback was rolling left, causing the ball to pop up into the air and into the arms of Johnson, who rumbled 16 yards for the back-breaking score.

The game started out much differently for Denver, which went 73 yards in 11 plays on its first drive, with Tebow plowing over the goal line from a yard out to finish things off.

But the Broncos failed to record a first down the rest of the half, allowing the Bills to shake off two missed field goals by Rayner in the first quarter.

Rayner was wide left on tries of 45 and 31 yards before splitting the uprights on a 28-yard attempt with 6:06 remaining in the second quarter.

Shortly thereafter, Britton Colquitt outkicked his coverage with a 50-yard punt. McKelvin fielded the booming kick at his own 20-yard line and took it up the left sideline, where he avoided Colquitt’s blatant trip on his way to the end zone.

Eddie Royal returned the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown, but a block in the back penalty on Dante Rosario nullified the score.

The Bills got the ball back at their own 42 with 1:52 left in the half, and David Nelson’s 30-yard catch helped set up Spiller’s four-yard touchdown run with 19 seconds remaining.

The Broncos broke out of their offensive funk on their first play of the second half, as Tebow hit Rosario for a 32-yard gain. After running for two yards on 4th-and-1, Tebow found Daniel Fells on a seam route up the middle for a 17-yard touchdown.

Buffalo had first-and-goal situations the next two times it had the ball, but settled for a pair of 25-yard Rayner field goals.

Honolulu, HI – Angel Rodriguez posted a game-high 16 points, leading the Kansas State Wildcats to a 78-70 victory over the Texas-El Paso Miners in the Diamond Head Classic semifinals at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Will Spradling and Jamar Samuels joined Rodriguez in double figures for Kansas State (9-1) with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Samuels completed a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds for the Wildcats, who have won four straight games since their lone loss to West Virginia on December 8th.

UTEP (5-6) got a balanced scoring effort, with five players notching double digits, led by Jacques Streeter’s 15 points. Julian Washburn finished with 13 points, Cedrick Land added 12 and Michael Perez and John Bohannon chipped in with 10 points apiece.

The Miners shot 57.1 percent from the floor in the first half but took just 14 shots from the field and trailed 45-32 at the break. Kansas State converted 15-of-32 field-goal attempts in the first half. Both teams were active from the free-throw line over the first 20 minutes, as UTEP went 14-of-20 from the charity stripe, while KSU was 12-of-14. The Wildcats were able to hold the Miners at bay by shooting 44.4 percent in the second half, compared to UTEP’s 41.4 percent.

KSU dominated play on the boards, outrebounding UTEP, 39-21, including grabbing 18 offensive rebounds. The KSU bench was also instrumental in the win, outscoring UTEP’s reserves 42-13.

The Wildcats will take on either Long Beach State or Auburn for the tournament title on Sunday.
