Hays High Boys Basketball Defeats Newton In Dramatic Fashion At HSC

The Hays Highboys basketall team claimed fourth place at the Hays City Shootout, defeating newton 40-37 Saturday afternoon at Felten Middle School.

Lane Clark hit a last-second 3-pointer to break the 37-all tie.

The Indians move to 2-1 on the season.

Kansas State Defeats Iowa State For 10th Win

Manhattan, KS – Jon Hubert’s 26-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter lifted the 16th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats over Iowa State 30-23 at a rainy Bill Snyder Family Stadium Saturday afternoon. The opening kickoff was delayed for almost an hour and a half due to lightning.

Hubert carried the ball 15 times for 120 yards for the Wildcats (10-2, 7-2 Big 12), who can still clinch a three-way share of the Big 12 championship. Kansas State needs an Oklahoma upset of Oklahoma State later Saturday in order for that to happen.

Collin Klein completed 7-of-15 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown. He also carried the ball 26 times for 86 yards and a score.

Jared Barnett connected on 15-of-27 passes for 153 yards, one touchdown and an interception for the Cyclones (6-6, 3-6 Big 12), who have lost two in a row.

Jeff Woody carried the ball 23 times for 85 yards and a two touchdowns, the second tying the game in the fourth quarter.

TMP Boys Basketball Posts Win Over Colby

After dropping their first two games of the season, the Thomas More Prep – Marian boys’ basketball team got a victory Saturday afternoon in the 7th-place contest against Colby in the Hays City Shootout.

TMP scored the first five points of the game and never trailed against the Eagles going on for a 63-38 win.

Nine players scored for the Monarchs including three in double digits. Senior Nick Hammeke led all scorers with 14 points. Seniors Jacob Fouts and Taylor Pfeifer scored 11 and 10 points respectively.

Colby’s Luke Cox scored 24 points against Hays High in the consolation semifinals the day before. Cox was held to just three points at Felten Middle School on Saturday.

TMP (1-2) will turn around and play the same Eagles team on Thursday in Colby.

FHSU Wrestling Upsets No. 7 Central Oklahoma

After falling behind 18-6, the Tiger grapplers won the last four matches to upset No. 7 Central Oklahoma, 21-18, on Thursday night (Dec. 1) at Gross Memorial Coliseum in FHSU’s first dual of the season. Tied at 18-18, senior  Justin Glenn won an overtime decision, 5-3, on a late takedown to give the Tigers the 21-18 win.
 
The Tiger rally started with an Aaron Berscheidt win by forfeit at 174 that cut the Bronchos lead in half to 18-12 with the six points. Junior Walker Clarke scored three points for the Tigers with a close 3-2 decision win at 184 pounds to pull FHSU to within three at 18-15. Another one-point decision tied the score at 18-18 when sophomore Tanner Kriss won a 5-4 decision.
 
The dual came down to the final match at heavyweight between senior Justin Glenn and UCO’s Cody Daughlin. After being tied through the regulation seven minutes, Glenn won in overtime, giving the Tigers the 21-18 victory.
 
Redshirt freshman Joey Dozier pinned UCO’s Kaleb Cradduck at 149 points to give the Tigers their first points of the match.
 
FHSU dropped the first three matches of the night. Adam Ludwin lost a 7-4 decision to Ryan Brooks at 125 poinds, Robbie Hines fell on a pin at 2:41 to Trison Graham and Dustin Dooley dropped a 4-2 decision to Casy Rowell at 141 pounds. The Tigers fell behind 12-0 before the Dozier win via pin.
 
After the Dozier win, the Bronchos won twice more at 157 and 165 pounds. Cory Dauphin defeated Derek Koehn in a close 3-2 decision, while Chris Watson won a 5-1 decision over Benny Armstrong to give UCO an 18-6 lead before the Tiger rally.
 
FHSU (1-0) hosts the Bob Smith Open this weekend, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 3) at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

TMP Monarchs Drop Hays City Shootout Opener

The TMP-Marian boys basketball team fell behind 20-8 after the first quarter and 34-10 at halftime and fall to DeSoto 57-34 in the opening round of the Hays City Shootout. 

The Monarchs outscore the Wildcats 24-23 in the second half.

Jacob Fouts was the only Monarch to reach double-figures scoring 16.

The Monarchs will play Newton Friday at 5:45pm at the Felten Middle School Gym.

Hays High Boys Drop Hays City Shoot-Out Opener

The Hays High boys fell behind early 12-2 and trailed by as many as 17 in the early part of the second quarter to the Kearney Bearcats and lose 73-51 in their Hays City Shootout Opener. 

The Indians would respond with a 12-2 run to pull within seven three different times, but could get no closer. They trailed by 11 at the half and were behind by double-figures the entire second half. 

The Indians were outrebounded by 18 and had no body score more than seven points. 

Hays will now play Colby in the second round Friday at 9:15pm at Felten Middle School.

Strong First Half Lifts HHS Girls To Shootout Win

The Hays High Lady Indians held Kearney to seven first half points, using an 18-5 second quarter run to go up 14 then held off a Bearcat four quarter rally for a 38-30 win in the opening round of the 29th annual Hays City Shoot Out Thruday night. 

Kearney pulled within eight and had the ball the the Indians never let them get any closer. 

Hays wins despite 29 turnovers.  

Paige Lunsford and Katelyn Shumacher each scored 10.

Hays High will now face Riley County in the winners bracket semifinals Friday at 7:30pm at the Hays High Gym.

Free Throw Shooting Lifts TMP-Marian Girls To Shootout Win

The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs us good free throw shooting down the stretch to holf off DeSoto 47-37 in their opener at the Hays City Shootout Thursday night.

The Monarchs led by three at the half and outscored the Wildcats 24-17 in the second and hit and hit 10 of 12 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

Rachel Jacobs led the Monarchs with a game-high 23 and was 11-for-11 at the line. Jenna Lang added 15.

The Lady Monarchs will now play Newton in the semifinals Friday at 4pm at the Hays High Gym. The Railers rolled past Great Bend 72-26 in their opener.

Gipson Leads Kansas State Past George Washington

MANHATTAN,Kan.(AP) – Thomas Gipson had 17 points and 13 rebounds for his first career double-double, Will Spradling added 14 points and Kansas State used a big second-half run to beat George Washington 69-56 on Thursday night.

Jamar Samuels added 10 points and 10 rebounds in his second game since serving a suspension for violating team rules, teaming with Gipson and Jordan Henriquez to give the Wildcats (4-0) an imposing front line. That contributed to 25 second-chance points against their smaller Atlantic 10 opponent.

George Washington (4-2), picked to finish fourth in the A-10, hung around until midway through the second half, when Spradling and company put together a 15-1 run that covered about six minutes. 

After beating up on four weak opponents at home, Kansas State now hits the road to face Virginia Tech on Sunday, then plays West Virginia and former coach Bob Huggins on a neutral floor in Wichita next week.
