Whitehill, Kosjer Named All-Region
Fort Hays State senior football players Alex Whitehill and Ethen Kosjer were named to the Daktronics All-Super Region 4 First Team on defense for the 2011 season following their record-setting year. The two earn this distinction after both earning All-MIAA First Team honors earlier in the fall. The Daktronics All-Region Team is voted on by sports information directors within Super Region 4.
Whitehill, a native of McPherson, Kan., is a first-team selection at linebacker. Whitehill finished the season leading NCAA Division II in tackles with 164, just five short of the Division II single-season record. However, he did set a new school record for tackles in a season, breaking the old mark of 150 set by Junior Hartig in 1979. He also set a new NCAA Division II record for assisted tackles in a season with 106, breaking the old mark of 105 set by Brian Holliday of Fayetteville State in 2002. Whitehill recorded at least 10 tackles in nine of 11 games this year and never had less than seven in a game. He had at least 20 tackles in a game three times this year. Whitehill was a Preseason All-American selection by Consensus Draft Services. He earned All-MIAA honors and CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honors for the second year in a row.
Kosjer is a first team selection at punter. The Douglass, Kan., native led the MIAA in punting average for the second straight season, this year at 44.4 yards per boot. He also led all of Super Region 4 in punting average. Kosjer ended the season ranked third in NCAA Division II in punting average. He set new single-season and career records at FHSU for punting average. His 44.4 yards per kick this year eclipsed the old mark of 43.2 set by Adam Ryan in 2000 and his career average of 42.7 passed the mark of 41.4, also set by Ryan. He earned All-MIAA honors for the second time in his career this year and this is the second Daktronics All-Super Region 4 honor of his career, after earning second team honors in 2009.
Both players will now be placed on the Daktronics All-American ballot after earning first team selections.

Kansas Outlasts Owls
Playing their first home game in nearly three weeks, the Jayhawks (4-2) committed 17 turnovers that turned into several easy baskets for the Owls (4-4). But the play underneath by Robinson, the reigning Big 12 player of the week, was enough to carry them to victory.
Tyshawn Taylor added 18 points, Travis Releford had 11 and Jeff Withey 10 for Kansas, which hadn’t played at Allen Fieldhouse since a season-opening win over Towson on Nov. 11.
Since then, the Jayhawks lost to top-ranked Kentucky at Madison Square Garden, beat Georgetown and UCLA in the Maui Invitational, and then lost to No. 3 Duke in the championship game.
Much of the Jayhawks’ success against Florida Atlantic came from the free throw line, where they were 24 of 31 — it certainly didn’t come from the 3-point arc, where they were just 4 of 13.
Elijah Johnson, the team’s top outside shooter, missed all three of his attempts. He also committed seven turnovers and at times looked completely lost on offense, just over a week after he scored a career-high 23 points against UCLA.
Dennis Mavin and Pablo Bertone scored points 17 each for the Owls, who have lost nine straight against ranked teams. Their last win against a ranked team came against No. 11 Oklahoma State on Dec. 1, 1998.
The defending Sun Belt regular-season champions started well, building a 9-3 lead and forcing Kansas coach Bill Self to call a timeout less than 4 minutes into the game.
It served as a wake-up call for the Jayhawks.
Withey scored their first field goal of the game out of the timeout, starting an 11-2 run that Taylor capped with his first basket with 11:29 remaining in the half.
Raymond Taylor hit a deep 3 for the Owls, but it hardly slowed the Jayhawks’ momentum. Connor Teahan hit the first of his three first-half 3-pointers, Justin Wesley scored his first basket and Teahan knocked down another 3 as the Jayhawks extended the lead to 29-16 with 6:08 left.
Tyshawn Taylor added a circus-like scoop layup after Florida Atlantic snapped a 4-minute drought, and his deep 3-pointer from the top of the key pushed the lead to 16, the Jayhawks’ biggest of the first half. Taylor hit two foul shots with 1.2 seconds left for a 42-26 lead.
The Jayhawks briefly extended the lead to 19 when Robinson converted a three-point play early in the second half, but their sloppiness nearly allowed Florida Atlantic back in the game.
On consecutive trips, Johnson threw the ball away, Kevin Young was stripped under the basket and Tyshawn Taylor was stripped by Mavin, who had 12 points in the second half.
The Owls got the lead down to 13 on a 3-pointer by Raymond Taylor with 7:14 left, but Withey scored at the other end and added another basket moments later to extend the lead, and Kansas cruised over the final 5 minutes to its 53rd nonconference home win in its last 54 games.
FHSU Women’s Basketball Holds Off Lincoln
The Fort Hays State Tigers match the best start in school history, holding off the Lincoln Blue Tigers 71-65 Wednesday night in Jefferson City, Mo. to move to 7-0.
Fort Hays State never trailed, scoring the games first eight points and led by as many as 11 in both the first and second half. Lincoln tied the game twice in the second half, the latest with 4:15 to play, the Tigers answered with nine straight.
FHSU shot just 58-percent from the free throw line but Traci Keyser and Kate Edwards both hit a pair in the final minute to seal the win.
Edwards led the Tigers with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Kimber Weiser added 12 and Keyser 11.

Broncos Defeat San Diego In Overtime
Tim Tebow engineered yet another comeback for the Broncos, and Matt Prater’s 37-yard field goal with 29 seconds remaining in overtime lifted Denver over the reeling San Diego Chargers 16-13 Sunday afternoon.
Tebow led Denver to a game-tying field goal with 1:34 left in regulation, them moved the ball into Chargers territory late in OT after San Diego’s Nick Novak pushed his 53-yard field goal attempt wide right.
After a first-down run by Tebow, Willis McGahee ran up the middle for a 24-yard gain to reach the Chargers’ 17-yard line. A kneel down by Tebow preceded Prater splitting the uprights to keep the Broncos (6-5) in the AFC West title hunt.
San Diego’s Ryan Mathews ran for a career-high 137 yards, 14 coming on a sprint off tackle to move the ball to the Denver 35-yard line with under five minutes in overtime.
Broncos rookie Von Miller tackled Mike Tolbert for a four-yard loss on 3rd-and-6 from the 31 to bring out the kicking unit. Even though an ill-timed timeout nullified a blocked kick, Denver stayed alive thanks to Novak’s unsuccessful kick.
Tebow completed at least 50-percent of his passes for the first time this year, connecting on 9-of-18 throws for 143 yards and a touchdown.

Gill Out As KU Football Coach
Turner Gill has been relieved of his duties as head football coach at the University of Kansas, KU Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger announced Sunday. Gill has coached the Jayhawks for two seasons after signing a five-year, $10 million contract in December 2009.
“After a thorough evaluation of our football program,” Zenger said, “I have concluded that new leadership is necessary to place us on the path toward competing for championships in the Big 12 Conference. I come to this conclusion reluctantly, because I have the utmost respect for Turner Gill as a quality individual who wants only the best for the young men he coaches.”
Zenger, who informed Gill of his decision late Sunday afternoon, said a national search for Gill’s successor will begin immediately. “I have no specific timetable,” he said. “Naturally I would like to have a new coach on board as soon as possible.” Zenger has named recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell as interim head coach.
Kansas Athletics owes Gill some $6 million for the remaining three years of his contract; Zenger said Kansas will fulfill the terms of that contract.
“We are striving for excellence across KU’s academic and research missions, and that drive extends to all of our athletic programs,” said KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little. “In consulting with Athletics Director Zenger, I agree that in order to achieve the excellence we seek in Kansas Football it is time to make a leadership change. Turner Gill is a man of integrity and we appreciate his service to our community.”
The current staff will continue to recruit under the direction of Mitchell.
FHSU Men’s Basketball Defeats Baker

FHSU finished its non-conference regular season slate perfect for the second straight season.
Baker finished with a higher shooting percentage overall and beyond the 3-point line than FHSU. The Wildcats shot 55.3 percent from the field (26-of-47) and 60 percent (6-of-10) beyond the arc. FHSU shot the ball very well also at 52.3 percent (34-of-65) from the field and 45.8 percent (11-of-24) beyond the 3-point line. FHSU Men’s Basketball Holds Off Sterling

Sterling came out of the gates red hot, but the FHSU weathered the storm to eventually defeat the Warriors 81-66 on Saturday (Nov. 26) at Gross Coliseium. Sterling led by six midway through the first half, but FHSU stormed back with a 19-4 run to take control and eventually lead by seven at halftime. They kept the Warriors at arm’s length in the second half to secure the win to move to 5-0 on the year.
