FHSU’s Hileman Leads List Of Five All-MIAA Selections

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) released its 2011 All-MIAA Volleyball selections on Thursday (Nov. 17). Fort Hays State senior libero Tracie Hileman was named to the third team while freshmen Sara Hewson and Kylee Hoagland along with sophomores Madison Schwartz and Jenna Ulrich were honorable mention selections.

Hileman earns the first All-MIAA honor of her career after leading the Tigers in digs with 653 for an average of 5.18 per set, which ranked third in the MIAA. The senior from Tonganoxie, Kan., finished her career third all-time in Fort Hays State’s Division II history in digs with 1,657.

Hewson, a native of Loveland, Colo., missed part of the season with a leg injury but still managed a solid freshman year, finishing with 227 kills and 28 service aces. Despite missing time, she still ranked third on the team in digs with 281, an average of 2.87 per set.

Hoagland teamed with Hewson to lead a strong freshman class for the Tigers. Hoagland, who hails from Mead, Colo., was third on the team in kills with 302 and second in blocks with 85. FHSU has now had three freshmen earn All-MIAA honors in the past two seasons.

Schwartz, a sophomore from Lincoln, Neb., earns All-MIAA honorable mention honors for the second straight season after leading the team in kills in 2011 with 308. Schwartz also added 126 digs and 34 blocks for the Tigers.

Ulrich earned her first all-conference nod following a breakout sophomore campaign. Ulrich, a Luray, Kan. native, was the only Tiger to start all 33 matches in 2011 and she finished the year ranking second on the team with 303 kills while leading the Tigers in hitting percentage (.259) and blocks (137). Her 137 blocks ranked her fourth in the MIAA and was the sixth-best mark in a single season in school history.

LaCrosse VS Plainville (LISTEN or WATCH at 7PM)

Tonight’s Sub-State Championship game matches a pair of familiar foes; the Plainville Cardinals and the LaCrosse Leopards. LaCrosse defeated Plainville in the final week of the regular season 14-8, giving LaCrosse the district crown.

The Leopards went on to defeat Moundridge in the first round at home and then went on the road last week and used a strong second half to down the defending state champions the Meade Buffaloes, 21-12 and they are a perfect 11-0 heading into this week.

The Plainville Cardinals bounced back after the loss to LaCrosse and won on the road at Salina Sacred Heart and then last week their defense put the clamps on the Stanton Country Trojan offense and downed them 6-0 in Johnson City. So they return home, this week, for their first playoff game with a 10-1 record.

The winner of tonight’s game will play the winner of the Pitt-Colgan vs. Centralia game next Saturday in Hays at Lewis Field Stadium.

Kickoff from Plainville is set for 7pm with out pre-game show beginning at 6:30 on The Country Bull Y102.

FHSU’s Whitehill Honored By MIAA Following Record-Setting Day

(Photo/FHSU Athletics)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – John Brown (Pittsburg State), Alex Whitehill (Fort Hays State), and Greg Zuerlein (Missouri Western) have been named MIAA Football Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Nov. 12 as selected by a conference SID panel.

MIAA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
John Brown, WR, Pittsburg State
Brown matched a school record with five touchdowns in No. 9 Pitt State’s 51-28 victory over Missouri Southern Saturday (Nov. 12) in the Sonic Miner’s Bowl.  Brown caught five passes for a career-high 146 yards, including touchdown grabs of 76 and 13 yards. The Homestead, Fla., native also carried the ball four times for 34 yards and three TDs, scoring on runs of 1, 3 and 25 yards.  Brown compiled 224 all-purpose yards in the contest, helping the Gorillas claim the 2011 MIAA Championship with the victory over the visiting Lions.

Others Nominated: Tommy Corwin, UCM; Michael Hill, MWSU; James Franklin, NWMSU.

MIAA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alex Whitehill, LB, Fort Hays State
Whitehill had a huge afternoon on defense for the Tigers. With 21 tackles against the Griffons, he set a new all-time FHSU single-season record for tackles with 164 in a season. It broke the mark of 150 set by Junior Hartig in 1979. The 164 tackles were just five shy of the NCAA Division II single-season record. Late in the game, Whitehill set a new NCAA Division II record for assisted tackles in a game with his 106th of the season. It passed the old mark of 105 set by Brian Holliday of Fayetteville State in 2002. The senior from McPherson, Kan., also set a career-high for tackles in a game with 21. He recorded the second interception of his career and returned it 37 yards to the MWSU 9-yardline, which set up a field goal to pull the Tigers within four points at 21-17 in the second quarter. Whitehill recorded double digit tackles in 9 of 11 games this year and reached at least 20 three times. He continues to lead NCAA Division II in tackles.

Others Nominated: Alexis Reedus, UCM; Ben Jackson, MWSU; Gus Toca, PSU; Nic Abbate, TSU.

MIAA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Greg Zuerlein, K, Missouri Western
Zuerlein nailed two more field goals against the Tigers. The senior from Lincoln, Neb., also had 10 kickoffs with three being for touchbacks. Zuerlein has made 18 consecutive field goals, which is an MIAA record, and he has made 20 total field goals, a new single season record by a Griffon kicker. During his current 18 straight field goals, 14 of them have been from 30+ yards. He is a perfect 5-for-5 from 30-39 yards, 3-for-3 between 40-49 yards and 6-of-6 from 50+ yards. He connected on all seven of his extra point attempts as well. Zuerlein scored 13 of the Griffons’ 55 points in the game.

K-State’s Klein, Cantele Honored As Big 12 Players Of The Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following Kansas State’s thrilling four-overtime victory over Texas A&M on Saturday, quarterback Collin Klein and place kicker Anthony Cantele were named the Big 12 Players of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Klein earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career, while Cantele was named the Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time in his career and the second time this season. Additionally, Klein was named to the Paul Hornung Award Weekly Honor Roll, which recognizes versatility in single-game performances, and a Manning Award Star of the Week.

The Big 12 honors by Klein and Cantele pushed K-State’s season total to eight, which is second in school history after the 1999 team picked up nine weekly honors.

Against the Aggies, Klein accounted for six total scores – the most in the Big 12 this season – including a school-record-tying five on the ground. He also finished with a career-high 281 yards passing and another score. He eclipsed 100 yards rushing for the fifth time this season after running for 103 yards, which also put him over the 1,000-yard mark for the year.

Klein finished the contest with 384 yards of total offense. He now has a nation-leading 24 rushing scores in 2011, which is a K-State record and is three shy of Ricky Williams’ (Texas) Big 12 record and Ricky Dobbs’ (Navy) NCAA record by a quarterback.

Klein was named to the Hornung Award Weekly Honor Roll for the first time this season, while he was named a Manning Award Star of the Week for the second time.

Cantele connected on two key fields, one at the end of regulation and another in double-overtime, to extend the game. His 44-yarder sent the game into overtime, while he then connected on a 38-yarder to tie the game and send it into a third overtime. The junior is 13-of-18 this season, including 3-of-5 from over 40 yards.
