Royals Outfielder Alex Gordon Wins Gold Glove

KANSAS CITY, MO  – Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc., and ESPN2 announced Tuesdaynight that Kansas City Royals outfielder Alex Gordon was awarded the American League Gold Glove in left field.  The awards were voted on by American League managers and coaches and honor the best individual fielding performances at each position in the American and National Leagues.

Gordon, a former third baseman, earns his first career Gold Glove in his first full season in the outfield.  He led all of Major League Baseball and set a Royals club record with 20 outfield assists, including throwing out 10 runners at the plate, while committing just three errors.  He became the fifth outfielder in the Majors since 1969 to post at least 20 outfield assists while committing three errors or less.

The Gold Glove is the first for a Royals player since Mark Grudzielanek earned the award at second base in 2006.  Gordon’s Gold Glove is the 19th awarded to Royals players all-time and the seventh to an outfielder.

No. 13 Kansas Rides Second-Half Surge To Defeat Pitt State, 84-55

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Five three-pointers from senior Conner Teahan and a triple-double from junior Jeff Withey ignited No. 13 Kansas to a win against Pittsburgh State in the 2011-2012 season exhibition opener, Tuesday night, 84-55.

A sold-out Allen Fieldhouse crowd played witness to the Jayhawks’ 38th-straight exhibition game victory, dating back to the 1995 season. Head coach Bill Self moved to 24-0 in exhibition games at Kansas as the Jayhawks kept their unblemished 9-0 record versus Pittsburg State.

Kansas, who shot for nearly 50 percent in the opening half while holding the visiting PSU to just 29 percent accuracy, fought off a closely contested first half instead before outscoring the Gorillas 52-28 in the final 20 minutes. As a team, Kansas also outdid its first-half effort, shooting for a 65-percent mark in the second frame. Defensively, Withey helped the Jayhawks to a lopsided blocking margin as KU rejected 15 shots to Pitt State’s single block.

Without the use of starters Tyshawn Taylor, Elijah Johnson and Thomas Robinson, Kansas head coach Bill Self worked all of his available roster into the Tuesday night’s contest. Teahan’s 21 points led all scorers, while Withey’s 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 blocks turned in the only triple-double of the evening – and of his career – had the game been a regular season contest.

Junior guard Travis Releford and freshman guard Naadir Tharpe churned out 14 and 12 points, respectively, to put four Jayhawks in double figures. All of the above would also have registered as career highs if Tuesday night’s matchup not been exhibition.

Teahan nailed a three just seconds after the Jayhawks won the opening tip, setting the tone for what looked to be an offensive outpouring from the Kansas lineup. The redshirt senior knocked down his first three shots from three-point land and finished the evening 5-of-8 from behind the three-point arc and an efficient 8-for-11 from the floor.

Powered by four returning starters from its 2010-11 squad, Pitt State was led by senior guard Drake Green and junior Nolen Marky’s nine points apiece and junior forward JaVon McGee’s 12 rebounds.

Just under the 15-minute mark, sophomore forward Justin Wesley was whistled for his second foul. The call sent Wesley to the bench for the majority of the opening half, but it was Pitt State that suffered from foul trouble. The Gorillas sent KU into the bonus with 12 minutes to play, a benefit the Jayhawks were not able to capitalize on, hitting just 3-of-8 from the line in the first frame and 19-for-37 on the night.

A three from junior Courtney Ingram and put-back layup off the hands of McGee shortened the Kansas lead, 19-15, bringing the Gorillas as close as they had been all evening to the Jayhawks. Another bucket from Ingram would cut the Kansas lead to two, seconds before the final media timeout. Tharpe responded with a pair of threes out of the timeout to help push the Jayhawks out to a 32-27 lead at the break.

Releford converted a three-point play to spark the Jayhawks in the early minutes of the second half. The starting point guard added to his eight first-half points with six more in the second, on a 55-percent shooting night.

A quick strike to the basket resulted in a Tharpe layup, backing up Teahan’s fourth three-pointer of the game. The back-to-back effort handed Kansas the 46-35 advantage at the 13:35 mark – the Jayhawks’ first double-digit lead since jumping out to a 15-5 advantage in the game’s early minutes.

With a sizable lead in tow, Kansas took off. Consecutive dunks from Releford and Wesley brought the full house to its feet and stretched the lead, 62-46.

The Jayhawks would increase its lead to 15, then 20 and finally 25 for the remainder of the game. When Teahan connected for his fifth three ball of the night, Kansas was well-beyond reach nearing the final media timeout on its way to the comfortable 84-55 victory.

Victoria Picks Up Playoff Win Over Cheylin

The Victoria football team avenged a 50-point loss from last year to Cheylin on Tuesday night as they defeated the Cougars 36-18 in the opening round of the 8-Man Division II State Playoffs.

The return trip to Bird City started out slow for the Knights as they turned the ball over three times in the first half. Victoria trailed 12-8 at halftime.

Victoria would score on their opening possession of the second half on a drive that went 41 yards and took up over four minutes. The drive was capped off by an eight-yard run by senior Corey Dinkel. Dinkel had a career night as he rushed for 248 yards and completed 10 passes for 87 yards and another score.

With the Knights leading by two, Cheylin would respond early in the fourth quarter with a 47-yard touchdown pass from senior Kenan Reeh to junior Ethan Young. After the failed two-point conversion, the Cougars (8-2) would hold an 18-14 lead with just over 10 minutes to play in the game.

Victoria would answer 86 seconds later when junior Dalton Dreiling recorded a two-yard touchdown to eventually regain the lead by four.

The Knights (6-4) came up with a stop on defense and then on their very next possession they converted on 4th-and-9 with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Dinkel to sophomore Tanner Hobbs. Dreiling would seal things by coming up with an interception on the following Cheylin drive.

The Knights move on to the next round where they will host Otis-Bison. Otis-Bison destroyed Moscow Tuesday night 68-20. The game can be heard on 101.9 FM, The Country Bull, Y102 on Saturday with a 6pm kickoff.

Royals Exercise Option On Closer Joakim Soria

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Royals have picked up their club option on Joakim Soria, keeping the two-time All-Star closing games for them next season.

The option for 2012 is valued at $6 million. The Royals announced the move Monday. They also hold options for 2013 of $8 million and 2014 for $8.75 million, with $750,000 buyouts each year.

Soria struggled at times last season, going 5-5 with 28 saves and a career-worst 4.04 ERA. He was coming off a season in 2010 in which the hard-throwing right-hander had 43 saves and a 1.78 ERA.

Still, there was little doubt the Royals would exercise their option on Soria after they held onto him at the July 31 trading deadline. He’s established himself as one of the game’s premier closers at just 27 years old, with 160 saves over the past five seasons.

MIAA Announces Football Players Of The Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Michael Hill (Missouri Western), David Bass (Missouri Western), and Jordan Simmons (Northwest Missouri) have been named MIAA Football Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 29 as selected by a conference SID panel.

The last to do it was Derrick Pitts vs. Central Missouri in 2003.  Hill was just 37 yards shy of tying the career-high for yards in a game, which is 283 by Tony Williams vs. Missouri-Rolla in 1996. The Griffons improved to 5-0 when rushing for over 200 yards in a game finishing with 356 against the Bearcats. Western also finished with over 500 yards of total offense for the second consecutive week. The junior from St. Joseph, Mo., gave the Griffons a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter catching a 13-yard pass from Travis Partridge. He led the Griffons with four catches for 51 yards and a touchdown. Hill is just 23 yards shy of 1,000 yards on the season. He is averaging 5.2 yards per carry.

Bass continues to dominate opposing offensive lines as he tied the single game Missouri Western record for sacks in a game for the second time this season with four against the Bearcats. Broncos Blown Out By Detroit

(Photo/denverbroncos.com)

DENVER (AP) – The Detroit Lions sacked Tim Tebow seven times and turned his two turnovers into touchdowns as they snapped a two-game skid with a 45-10 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Tebow followed his Miami miracle with a dud in Denver as the Broncos were blown out Sunday.

Cornerback Chris Houston had the fourth 100-yard interception return in team history and defensive end Cliff Avril got a sack, strip and scoop, rumbling 24 yards into the end zone with the fumbled football as part of Detroit’s 45-point run after the Broncos had taken a 3-0 lead on their first drive.

Kansas Guards Taylor, Johnson Suspended 2 Games

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kansas guards Tyshawn Taylor and Elijah Johnson have been suspended for violating team rules and will miss both of the No. 13 Jayhawks’ exhibition games.

Coach Bill Self declined to discuss the specific violations Sunday, but he did say they occurred during the offseason and that both players “have been terrific since school began.”

They’ll miss exhibition games Tuesday night against Pittsburg State and Nov. 8 against Fort Hays State.

Taylor is the Jayhawks’ leading returning scorer after averaging 9.4 points and 4.6 assists last season. Johnson started six games a year ago and is their best returning outside shooter.

Kansas opens its regular season Nov. 11 against Towson.

(Photo/FHSU Athletics)

Fort Hays State scored two first half goals en route to a 2-0 win over visiting Washburn in non-conference action on Saturday night (Oct. 29) at the FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays. The win was the home finale for the Tigers in their inaugural season. With the victory, the Tigers upped their record to 6-11-1 on the season.

Fort Hays took the lead less than two minutes into the contest, scoring at 1:56 when Rachel Wiesen received a beautiful pass from Joanne Glynn and sent the shot to the left side of the Washburn goalkeeper.

The Tigers doubled their lead to 2-0 when Joanne Glynn scored her team-high ninth goal of the season. Jamie Babyak sent in a free kick from about midfield that Margaret Meier knocked over to Glynn who scored on the right side of the box.

The second half went scoreless for both teams. In the full 90 minutes, the Tigers outshot the Lady Blues 15-7. FHSU totaled 10 first half shots and five more in the second half. Washburn finished with six in the first and just one in the second 45 minutes.
