FHSU Volleyball Suffers Five-Set Loss At Truman State

(Photo/FHSU Athletics)

The Fort Hays State volleyball team travelled to Kirksville, Mo. on Saturday evening (Oct. 29) to face Truman. After dropping the first set, the Tigers took the second and third sets and came close to getting the victory in the fifth set before a Bulldog rally put the match away.

Truman won the first set 25-21 after hitting an impressive .367 for the set and just committing four hitting errors. Fort Hays State won the second set 27-25 and the third 29-27 to take the lead of the match. Truman quickly answered by downing the Tigers 25-11 in the fourth to set up the decisive set.

In the fifth set, Fort Hays State jumped out to a 7-3 advantage after a kill by Megan Glandon, who had a season-high 14 kills in the match. Also putting up a season high in kills was Yadira Jacquez, who led the team with 18 on 67 attempts. Truman quickly rallied from the deficit by scoring four straight points to tie the score at 7-7 and force FHSU to call a timeout. The teams then traded points until the match was tied at 13-13. A hitting error by Glandon, which was disputed by head coach Kurt Kohler, gave the Bulldogs a 14-13 lead and led Kohler to call another timeout, but it was not enough to stop the momentum as Truman got an assist block from Emily Briseno and Heather Hargadine to take the set 15-13.

Jacquez and Glandon led the Tigers in kills, and were joined in double figures by Madison Schwartz, who chipped in 10. Fort Hays State stayed in the match despite being outhit by the Bulldogs as well as having fewer kills, blocks and digs. Truman hit significantly better than the Tigers, hitting at .268 compared to .170 for FHSU. Five Tigers reached double figures in digs, led by Tracie Hileman with 22. Jenna Ulrich had another big night at the net, recording six blocks (four solo, two assist) while Kylee Hoagland had five (two solo, three assist).

Truman got a big night from Megan Sharpe and Molly Sinclair, who each had 19 kills. Sharpe hit .516 for the match and had seven blocks, while Sinclair added 14 digs for a double-double. Abby Moser had 27 digs to lead the Bulldogs, who improved to 17-11 on the season and 6-6 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State drops to 15-13 with the loss and 3-10 in MIAA play coming into the final two weeks of the season. The Tigers host their final two home matches of the season next Friday and Saturday (Nov. 4-5) against Missouri Southern and Southwest Baptist.

Hays High defeat Salina Central 35-21

The Hays High Indians knew they were already headed to the state playoffs, but a win would help the Indians in the playoff seedings on senior night.  Hays struck first with a Mark Mathis touchdown rush and then after a successful onside kick the Indians Austin Unrein ran a touchdown in from 20 yards out putting the Indians up 14-0.

Salina Central did bring the game back with in on posession scoring a touchdown with just :35 seconds left in the first half, but that left enough time for David Cardinal so strike on a 72 yard touchdown run pushing the half time lead to 21-7.

Central again would fight back and make the score 21-14 after a Hays High fumble, but the Indians answered with back to back David Cardinal touchdowns, the second after a Adam Deterding interception.  Salina Central tacked on a touchdown late to make the final score 35-21.

TMP-Marian Finishes Season with Loss to Goodland

TMP's season comes to an end as big plays hurt them against Goodland.

The Thomas More Prep–Marian football team needed a win Thursday night in Goodland to make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2002, but it just wasn’t in the cards for the Monarchs losing 35-19.

Both Goodland and TMP were 1-1 in district play going into the game setting up a do or die game to be the runner up out of District 15 in Class 3A. The Cowboys (5-4) will travel to undefeated Scott City Tuesday night for the opening round of the playoffs.

The Monarchs fumbled the football twice on their first three possessions, and the Cowboys scored on their first three possessions. Just like that, the Herd was down 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

TMP (5-4) figured things out in the second quarter, scoring two times with touchdown passes from senior Nick Hammeke. The first score went to senior Jacob Fouts, and the second thrown to junior Shane Zimmerman.

Fouts finished the game with five receptions breaking the school record for most receptions in a season. Fouts finished the season with 44 catches, edging out Nathan Zimmerman’s record of 43 set last year.

TMP only trailed by eight, 21-13, to begin the second half, but Goodland sophomore Dax Ruhs broke a 94-yard touchdown run on the Cowboys’ first play on offense to begin the third quarter. Ruhs punished the Monarchs all night with 16 carries, 249 yards, and three touchdowns.

Both teams would score one more time before the finish of the ballgame.

Unofficial numbers from Thursday’s contest:

Hammeke: 22 completions, 229 yards, 3 touchdowns. 20 carries, 87 yards.
Dylan Gottschalk: 14 carries, 47 yards.
Taylor Pfeifer: 6 receptions, 74 yards, 1 touchdown.
Shane Zimmerman: 5 receptions, 53 yards, 1 touchdown.

With his effort against Goodland, Hammeke finished the season with over 2,000 yards passing (2,068). Hammeke now owns just about every passing record in the book for TMP-Marian.

TMP will lose 13 seniors after this year and will have a realigned district next season. The Monarchs will play Russell, Scott City, and Hoisington in district play in 2012.

TMP Football at Goodland Tonight (LISTEN LIVE OR WATCH)

Essentially, a play-in game will be taking place Thursday night in Goodland as Thomas More Prep – Marian will take on the Cowboys for a chance to make the playoffs.

The Monarchs (5-3) put themselves in a position to make the postseason for the first time since 2002 when they defeated Norton 20-19 last Friday. The victory marked an end to seven straight district game defeats. TMP now sits at 1-1 in Class 3A, District 15. Goodland is also 1-1, setting up the scenario of whoever wins Thursday’s game will make it to the playoffs as the District 15 runner-up. Phillipsburg is 2-0 and has already defeated both schools.

The Herd may have put together their best defensive effort last week against Norton. TMP forced 5 turnovers against the Blue Jays without their leading tackler, senior Austin Werth who tore his ACL and MCL two weeks ago.

Goodland made the playoffs last year as the district runner-up, and hold a 4-4 record so far this fall. The Cowboys saw a three-game winning streak come to an end last week as they lost to Phillipsburg 35-21. Senior quarterback Reed Bellamy’s numbers are down a bit from last year, but Goodland has used the rushing attack more this year. Sophomore Dax Ruhs has rushed for 523 yards this year and is coming off a 116-yard effort last week.

Stat Watch:

While senior Nick Hammeke owns just about every passing record at Thomas More Prep – Marian, fellow senior Jacob Fouts is closing in on a few receiving records.

– Fouts, who has 39 receptions on the season, needs just five more catches to claim the most receptions in a season.
– Fouts only needs 38 more receiving yards to own the career receiving yards record at TMP set by Tracey Hoffman in the late 1980’s with 951 yards.

– Fouts already has the school record for career receptions with 72.

Keep in mind, Shane Zimmerman is close behind Fouts in all these categories and Zimmerman is only a junior this year.

If you’re traveling out to the game in Goodland this Thursday night, it will start up at 6:00 Mountain Time. For those listening here in the Hays area, it’s the same start as usual. The Fort Hays Auto Sales Pregame Show will begin at 6:30PM with kickoff at 7:00 on KAYS (1400-AM) or listen online right here at Hayspost.com.
