Hays High rally in 4th, defeat Salina South 28-24

Hays High is heading the state playoffs for the first time since 1995.

The Indians were trying to play catch up to Salina South initially, and when the Cougars were looking to go up 14-0 in the 1st, they coughed up the ball in the end zone and Hays High fell on the ball for the touch back. Hays High hung tight in the first half, and went into half time down 10-7.

By mid-4th quarter, the Indians were down 24-14. But the special teams lived up to their name, and David Cardinal returned a kick 90 yards for a touchdown. The next play, the Indians got the onside kick to bounce their way, and regained possession of the ball. 8 plays and 4 minutes later, Cardinal punched in another touchdown, giving the Indians their first lead of the game at 28-24.

But the Cougars, with ample time to make a drive, made their way to the Indians 5 yard line. The Indians defense remained stout, and forced a turnover on downs with 1 second left. Then, a kneel, and a win.

Salina South racked up 481 total yards. Hays High had 343 total yards.

HHS RB David Cardinal had 181 yards on 23 carries, and 1 rushing TD. (plus the massive special teams return)

Y102 Game of The Week: Quinter at Hill City

As we begin to close out the final two games of the 2011 regular season, teams across the state of Kansas face the most important games of the season. Tonight’s Y102 Area Game of the Week comes to you from Hill City for another 8-Man 1 district 7 matchup between the Hill City Ringnecks and Quinter Bulldogs.

Tonight’s game features a pair of teams that may have been two of the most successful 8-Man 1 teams in recent years. The visiting Quinter Bulldogs are just two years removed from third state championship in school history.

The Bulldogs are putting together another solid season, they are 6-1 and a perfect 4-0 in district action after defeating Hoxie last week 34-18. The Bulldogs offense is led by running back Logan Reed. Reed was the leading rusher last season and has already eclipsed one-thousand yards this season to go along with 19 touchdowns.

But the Bulldogs will be without their starting quarterback, Sophomore Colton Corwin, who went down with a knee injury.

Quinter’s defense maybe the strongest part of this years squad. They are allowing 172 yards a game and have allowed just three teams to score in double figures. Reed, Toby Waggoner and Brian Ochs anchor the defense. Ochs has 87 tackles and 10.5 sacks this season.

Their opponent, the Hill City Ringnecks, are a year removed from the school’s second ever playoff appearance and their first ever appearance in a state championship game, after finishing 11-2 last season. After graduating four starters on offense and six starters are defense the Ringnecks have had to have players step up this season. Two of those players are Dylan Anderson and Adam Pfeifer. Pfeifer was the leading returning rusher from last season with 646 yards and eight touchdowns. But Pfeifer was lost for the rest of the season in week 2. Quarterback Dylan Anderson picked up the slack, totaling 1,480 yards through the first seven games of the year. But Anderson was also bitten by the injury bug and is expected to miss some time.

Solomon Wilson, who was the leading receiver so far this season, for the Ringnecks will start at quarterback tonight. Wilson has not attempted a pass in a varsity game this season. But he will try and fill the hole left by Anderson.

Tonight’s Y102 Area Game of the Week features the 6-1 Quinter Bulldogs and the 2-5 Hill City Ringnecks in another district game.

Kickoff from Hill City is set for 7pm with the Fort Hays State University Office of Admissions Pre-Game Show beginning at 7pm tonight.

TMP Football vs. Norton (LISTEN LIVE OR WATCH)

Class 3A, District 15 play continues for Thomas More Prep – Marian tonight as they host Norton Community.

The Monarchs (4-3) had a rough second half last week against Phillipsburg, losing 47-7. TMP is looking to do a better job holding on to the football this week as they had seven turnovers a week ago.

TMP will be without senior Austin Werth for the rest of the season as he tore his ACL and MCL last Friday. Werth led the team in tackles with 56 on the season.

Senior Nick Hammeke has now thrown for 1,700 yards on the season, and is just 65 yards away from getting to 4,000 career passing yards.

The Herd has lost 15 straight games to Norton. The last time TMP won a game in this series was back in 1937.

Norton (3-4) also suffered a loss last week to begin district play as they fell 17-0 to Goodland. The Blue Jays have lost three straight games and only returned one starter from last year’s team.

The other District 15 game features Goodland and Phillipsburg. Both schools are 1-0 in district play.

Kickoff between TMP and Norton is at 7PM with the Fort Hays Auto Sales Pregame Show starting at 6:30.

Hays High Boys Soccer Edges TMP-Marian

The Hays High boys soccer team wrapped up their regular season with 3-2 a win over crosstown rival TMP-Marian in the first high school game played at the new Fort Hays State Soccer Stadium.

In the first non-tournament meeting between the two, the Indians held a 1-0 lead at the half following a Jordan Windholz goal in the 12th minute off an assist from Lane Clark.

The Monarchs tied it on a free kick from Michel Gonzales in the 44th minute. Clark then hooked up with Windholz again in the 48th minute to give the Indians a 2-1 lead. Three minutes later, Hays would go up 3-1 when Cody Brown sent the ball long to Kellen Griffin who converted for the score. The Monarchs would pull back within a one in Michel Gonzales second goal in the 66th minute.

The win improves the Indians to 7-9 while TMP-Marian drops to 6-10. Both teams find out Saturday who and where they play for the post season which begins next week.
