Former Big Eight Chief Neinas Contacted By Big 12

By EDDIE PELLS
AP National Writer

Former Big Eight Commissioner Chuck Neinas says he’s been contacted by the Big 12 about possibly being the conferences interim commissioner, and that he told the league’s leaders he was interested.

The Big 12 presidents were scheduled to meet Thursday to discuss ways to stabilize the league. Apparently, a change of leadership is part of that plan.

Neinas told The Associated Press on Thursday morning that he had not yet been retained. He says: “If that happened, it would happen at the end of the day.”

The Kansas City Star, citing two sources with knowledge of the decision, reported Wednesday night that current Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe was working on an agreement to leave his position and that an announcement of Beebe’s departure was expected Thursday.

Big 12 Commissioner Working On Exit

The latest on the Big 12 isn’t about which school’s are possibly leaving or who may be joining, but rather about a shakeup at the top. The Kansas City Star is reporting that Dan Beebe is working on an agreement to exit as conference commissioner. An announcement of his departure is expected to come as early as Thursday.

Beebe joined the Big 12 in 2003 and became the commissioner in 2007. He had been the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference the previous 14 years and had also worked in the NCAA’s enforcement division.

Royals Drop Home Finale

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Miguel Cabrera drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, Don Kelly added a two-run homer and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 on Wednesday night for a split of the two game series at Kauffman Stadium.

Victor Martinez added three RBIs for Detroit. Doug Fister (10-13) yielded two hits over three shutout innings of relief, and Jose Valverde pitched the ninth to remain perfect in 47 save chances.

The Tigers trailed 3-2 in the seventh when Martinez delivered a two-out RBI single off Royals reliever Aaron Crow. The game remained tied until the eighth, when reliever Kelvin Herrera (0-1) made his big league debut and promptly plunked Ryan Raburn, the first Detroit batter he faced.

Cabrera came through with his double moments later to give the Tigers the lead, and Kelly added his two-run homer with two outs in the inning to give their bullpen some breathing room.

The Royals, who have won eight of their last 10 game and finish 40-41 at home this season. They are off  Thursday before opening a three-game weekend series in Chicago before closing out the season with three in Minnesota.

The Thomas More Prep – Marian football team is off to a 3-0 start but they face their biggest test this Friday night as they travel to LaCrosse to take on the undefeated Leopards.

Offense has not been a problem for the Monarchs the past two weeks. TMP totaled 546 yards of total offense last Friday against Larned in a 54-20 win.  Senior Nick Hammeke has already thrown for over 900 yards in the first three games of the season. Coach Jon Borer is looking for better starts and finishes from his team. TMP has scored 100 points in the last two weeks combined and is averaging 41 points per game (8th best in Class 3A).

Y102 Area Game Of The Week (Listen Live)

The Y102 Area Game of the Week is in Phillipsburg tonight for a Mid-Continent League showdown between the Ellis Railroaders and the Phillipsburg Panthers. Both teams stumbled out of the gate against a very difficult schedule and have dealt with early season injuries.

The Ellis Railroaders are still searching for their first win of the season, under 5th year coach Butch Hayes. The Railroaders return 11 starters from last season’s team that finished 5-5. Senior Riley Hunsicker takes over the reins of the spread offense that scored 18.1 points per game last season. So far this season Ellis is averaging 225 yards per game against the likes of Norton, Plainville and Smith Center. Austin Lopez, Ellis’ leading receiver last season, has been Hunsicker’s favorite target this season, with 10 receptions for 233 yards and two touchdowns.

The leader of the Railroaders 3-5 defense, Jared Herl, was supposed to sure up the defense like he did last season but suffered a foot injury in the first game of the season and is out again this week. Lopez, Hunsicker and Gage Younger have anchored the back end of the Railers defense that has allowed 380 yards per game this season.

Injuries have been a big factor for the Phillipsburg Panthers as well this season. While Sean Newlan returns in his Junior as the starting quarterback the injury bug has bitten his backfield mates. Phillipsburg’s fullback Ross Coomes is the leading rusher on the season with 197 yards and 1 touchdown. Tonight Hunter Kohler will make his first start of the year at wingback and Matt Schneider moves from wide receiver to wingback to fill holes left to injury.

Junior Seth Derr has proved to be a big target on the outside for Newlan. Derr has seven receptions for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Tad Thompson also has seven receptions for 110 yards and one touchdown opposite of Derr. The Panthers opened the season with losses to Plainville and Smith Center before beating Oakley last week to earn their first win. Through three games the Panthers are averaging 331 yards per game and 29 points per game.

Defensively the Panthers are allowing 330 yards rushing to three pretty good rushing attacks. Tonight, at times, they will use a three man front to counter the passing attack of the Railroaders. Defensive end William Sauer has had a great start too the season and helps to anchor the defense alongside linebacker Ross Coomes and defensive backs Seth Derr and Sean Newland.
