Brown, Stokes, lead No. 18 Kansas State past Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Barry Brown and Xavier Sneed each scored 16 points, and No. 18 Kansas State beat Texas 71-64 Tuesday night for its ninth straight Big 12 victory.

Three other Wildcats scored in double figures, Dean Wade with 12 points, and Kamau Stokes and Makol Mawien with 11 apiece.

Kerwin Roach led Texas with 17 points, and Courtney Ramey added 10.

Kansas State (19-5, 9-2 in Big 12) converted nearly 55 percent of its field goal attempts, including 56.5 in the second half.

The Wildcats used runs of 8-0 and 9-0 in the second half before seven minutes were gone, the latter giving the Wildcats a seven-point lead. Even so, they could not shake Texas. A long 3-pointer by Kamau Stokes with 4:30 left gave them their second seven-point lead of the half.

Texas (14-11, 6-6), trying to cut the deficit to two with 3:02 left, used too much of the 30-second shot clock, Jaxson Hayes’ basket ruled to be too late after the officials went to replay.

Roach committed three turnovers in the first six minutes of the game, but he eventually made a star turn, scoring 14 points in the first half, primarily with hard drives to the basket that resulted in layups and free throws.

Ramey added all 10 of his points for Texas in the half, and the Longhorns led 39-35 at the break.

Roach slowed down in the second half, scoring just three points and committing three more turnovers.

Kansas State played without guard Cartier Diarra, its top reserve who recently suffered a broken finger on his shooting hand that will require surgery. He’s out indefinitely.

BIG PICTURE

Kansas State: The Wildcats maintained their hold on first place in the Big 12 standings. One reason is a 5-1 record on the road in conference games, an area in which they have improved the last three seasons. They are 13-11 in Big 12 road games since the beginning of 2016-17. In the previous two seasons they were 2-16 in Big 12 road games. Kansas State did get a break when Baylor was missing two starting guards, including leading scorer Makai Mason, on Saturday.

Texas: The Longhorns, a really poor 3-point shooting team earlier in the season, have recently improved, but they still ranked only 227th nationally before Tuesday with 33.4 percent accuracy. They made 17 of 43 (39.5 percent) in two games before facing Kansas State, so perhaps they were due for a bad game. They had one, hitting 4 of 19 against the Wildcats.

UP NEXT

Kansas State hosts Iowa State on Saturday. The Wildcats beat the Cyclones 58-57 on Jan. 12 in Ames. Barry Brown Jr. hit the game winning driving shot with four seconds remaining.

Texas hosts Oklahoma State on Saturday. Texas lost to the Cowboys 61-58 on Jan. 8 in Stillwater, stopping their momentum after a 2-0 start in Big 12 play and starting a three-game losing streak.

FHSU women’s basketball rises in national rankings

The Fort Hays State women’s basketball team took care of business on the road last week, defeating Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern by a combined 40 points. As a result, the Tigers continued to climb in both national polls released Tuesday (Feb. 12), sliding up to fourth in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll while improving to third in the D2SIDA National Media Poll.

Fort Hays State earned 515 points in the balloting process of the Coaches Poll, just eight points back of No. 3 Indiana (Pa.). With just two undefeated teams remaining in Division II, the media have the Tigers listed as the top team with one loss so far this season.

Joining the Tigers in the Coaches Poll this week is Thursday’s opponent, Lindenwood. The Lions return to the Top 25 after a brief stay at No. 24 last month. Also representing the MIAA is No. 24 Central Missouri in the Coaches Poll and No. 25 Emporia State in the Media Poll.

Fort Hays State is 2-0 against ranked teams this season and 8-11 against ranked opponents while ranked under head coach Tony Hobson.

The Tigers went 2-0 as the fourth-ranked team earlier this season and are 6-1 all-time while ranked fourth according to the coaches.

Dotson scores 25 as No. 14 Kansas wins in OT at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Devon Dotson scored 25 points, including six free throws in the final 40 seconds of overtime, and No. 14 Kansas beat TCU 82-77 on Monday night for its second win in a row while starting four freshmen.

After blowing a 12-point lead in the second half, the Jayhawks (19-6, 8-4 Big 12) never trailed in overtime. They broke the final tie on K.J. Lawson’s jumper with 1:09 left before Dotson sealed it at the free-throw line.

Dotson also had 10 rebounds for one of the three double-doubles for Kansas. Ochai Agbaji had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Dedric Lawson, a junior and the only non-freshman starter, had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

TCU (17-7, 5-6), trying to win consecutive games against Top 25 teams for the first time in school history, had a 13-0 run late in regulation and took a 69-65 lead on JD Miller’s two free throws with 2:07 left. The Frogs didn’t score again until overtime.

Dedric Lawson had a putback basket for the Jayhawks with 1:06 left, and they got the ball back after TCU freshman Kendric Davis lost it out of bounds. The ball was initially ruled off a Kansas player until a replay review.

K.J. Lawson tied the game on a floater with 24 seconds left, and Davis missed a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer.

Desmond Bane had 18 points for TCU while Davis scored 16, Kouat Noi had 14 and Alex Robinson scored 13.

BIG PICTURE

Kansas: The young Jayhawks got a big road win. After senior guard Lagerald Vick took a leave of absence from the program last week, coach Bill Self used four freshman starters Saturday for only the second time in his 16 seasons. They won Saturday at Oklahoma State, rebounding from a loss at Kansas State, and overcome a raucous atmosphere in Fort Worth.

TCU: It was a stinging loss for TCU, which had won eight consecutive Big 12 home games. The Frogs were coming off a 92-83 win at then-No. 17 Iowa State on Saturday. They jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 1 1/2 minutes against Kansas, and had the big run late before falling.

UP NEXT

Kansas is home Saturday against struggling West Virginia, which beat the Jayhawks 65-64 on Jan. 19.

TCU hosts Oklahoma on Saturday with a chance for a regular-season series sweep of the Sooners.

FHSU adjusts schedule; Tiger baseball home opener set for Wednesday

FHSU Athletics

The Fort Hays State baseball team will make its home debut on Wednesday, February 13 after a schedule change altered plans to travel to Emporia, Kan. Due to the forecasted low temperatures over the weekend, the Tigers will instead host Wayne State (Neb.) for a three-game midweek series.

The Tigers and Wildcats will battle in a single contest at 3 p.m. Wednesday before wrapping up the series with a doubleheader beginning at noon Thursday (Feb. 14).

The Tigers hold a 12-3 advantage in the all-time series with Wayne State, including a 10-2 mark at home. The teams last met in 2012, when Fort Hays State swept a two-game series inside Larks Park. The Tigers have won five-straight meetings with the Wildcats, with the last WSC win coming on Opening Day in 1996.

Wayne State is 2-1 so far this season while the Tigers are 0-5 to start the year. Landon Erway leads the Tigers with a .600 batting average, second-best in the MIAA, while Ryan Stoecklein boasts a team-best .643 on-base percentage. Ryan Grasser has collected 12 total bases through five games, including the lone Tiger home run.

Wayne State has compiled a .310 batting average through three contests, including five home runs. Alex Logelin leads the way with a .583 batting average while Bryce Bisenius cleared the fence with a pair of home runs.

Fort Hays State was initially scheduled to travel to Emporia on Thursday for a crossover tournament consisting of two games against Wayne State, one meeting with Emporia State and a single game against William Jewell.

FHSU Athletics

FHSU Athletics

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State junior forward Belle Barbieri has been named MIAA Women’s Basketball co-Athlete of the Week for her performance on the road last week, announced Monday (Feb. 11) by the league office. Barbieri averaged 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in a pair of victories for the fifth-ranked women’s basketball team, knocking down more than 70 percent of her shots from the floor (12-of-17).

The Abilene, Kan. native got the Tigers off to a hot start against Pittsburg State on Thursday, scoring nine points in the first 10 minutes to nearly outscore the Gorillas herself (11 points). She followed that up with a career day on Saturday, totaling 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting in a win over Missouri Southern. Barbieri finished the game one rebound shy of a double-double, including six boards on the offensive end.

It is the third time a Tiger has earned the weekly award this season after Tatyana Legette picked up the honor two times.

The league-leading Tigers will return home for the first time in nearly three weeks on Thursday (Feb. 14) when they take on the second-ranked team in the conference, Lindenwood. First tip is set for 5:30 p.m. from Gross Memorial Coliseum.

No. 10 FHSU wrestling falls to No. 2 Lopers

KEARNEY, Neb. – The No. 10 ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team fell short with their second half comeback bid against Nebraska-Kearney, falling 29-12, on Sunday (Feb. 10). The Tigers dropped to 2-9 in duals overall and 1-3 in MIAA duals, while the Lopers improved to 12-4 overall and 5-0 in conference action.

Fort Hays State fell behind 11-0 early on as Broderick Green dropped the 125-pound bout to No. 3 ranked Josh Portillo by technical fall (21-3) and Braden Visnieski was pinned by Wesley Dawkins in the first period (0:50).

No. 1 ranked Brandon Ball earned the Tigers their first points of the day with a 7-0 decision over No. 8 ranked Jon Killingsworth at 141 pounds. Ball improved to 19-0 on the season and 13-0 against Division II competition. Ryne Cokeley faced Nick Babcock at 149 pounds, keeping it close into the third period only trailing Babcock 1-0. Babcock pulled away with the bout and defeated Cokeley with a 13-5 major decision.

No. 4 ranked Efe Osaghae put another three points on the scoreboard for the Tigers in the 157-pound weight class after narrowly defeating Walker Johnson with a 3-2 decision. At the intermission, UNK led FHSU 15-6.

Conrad Vajnar gave all he could give against No. 1 ranked Calvin Ochs at 165 pounds, but Ochs veteran experience got the best of Vajnar in the second period with a fall (4:33). At 174 pounds, Aryus Jones earned the Tigers another decision victory after defeating Zach Stodden 11-8 in a back-and-forth battle.

Senior Micquille Robinson cut the deficit by another three points after narrowly defeating Isaac Deaton by one point, 9-8, in the 184-pound match. Robinson earned his team-leading 32nd win of the season and is now 13-4 in Division II.

The Lopers wrapped up the dual with wins in the final two weight classes after Ryan Tiers couldn’t get anything going against Trey Schlender in a 15-0 technical fall defeat and A.J. Cooper was beat out by No. 5 ranked Jarrod Hinrichs in a 7-3 decision at 285 pounds.

The Tigers will regroup and finish off the regular season Wednesday (Feb. 13) as they take on Newman University in the final MIAA dual of the season. The Tigers and Jets will square off at 7 p.m. from inside Fugate Gymnasium.

Early offense leads to Tiger softball’s first win of the season

EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State scored runs in all but one inning for an 11-4 win over Colorado Christian on Sunday (Feb. 10) morning. The Tigers pounded out 12 hits and picked up their first win of the season moving to 1-2 overall, while the Cougars dropped to 2-3 on the season.

Five consecutive singles by Terran Caldwell, Katie Adler, Grace Philop, Bailey Boxberger, and Sara Breckbill to open the bottom of the first inning instantly put the Tigers up 3-0. Boxberger drove in two on her single, and Breckbill drove in one. The lead grew to 4-0 when Breckbill stole second and a throwing error allowed Boxberger to score from third. Allison Jurgensen and Megan Feiner drew back-to-back walks to load the bases again and Lily Sale capped a five-run first inning for FHSU with a sacrifice fly RBI to right field.

A throwing error by the pitcher on a batted ball by Caldwell in the second inning led to another Tiger run. Adler walked and then Philop moved both Tiger runners up a base with a ground out. Boxberger picked up her team-best third RBI of the contest with a sacrifice fly RBI, making it 6-0.

Tiger starting pitcher Michaelanne Nelson allowed just one hit through the first two innings, but ran into a bit of trouble in the third when a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for CCU. The Cougars picked up their first run of the game on a sacrifice fly, but a ground out to follow ended the chance of any big rally. FHSU led 6-1 going to the bottom half of the third.

The Tigers had their first two batters in the third reach base. A nice sacrifice by Caldwell moved the runners up and the Adler capitalized with an RBI single to make it 7-1. FHSU put together a two-out rally in the fourth inning when Jeni Mohr made it 8-1 with an RBI double and Caldwell backed it up with a two-RBI double, pushing the lead to 10-1.

The Tigers almost closed out the Cougars in the fifth by run rule, but the Cougars put together a late-inning rally to get the score margin back inside eight. A ground out that produced the second out of the inning made it 10-2, but a Stephanie Day single brought in a run from third to make it 10-3. Charlotte Romero followed with an RBI double down the left-field line, making it 10-4. Coach Adrian Pilkington decided at that point to turn the ball over to Hailey Chapman in relief. Nelson picked up her first win at FHSU in 4.2 innings of work, allowing all four CCU runs on six hits and two walks.

Elise Capra, who entered the game as a pinch runner for Breckbill in the fourth and then remained in the game to catch, smashed a ball over the left field wall in the fifth to produce the game’s final run.

Hailey Chapman was spotless in relief for the second straight day, going 2.1 innings and facing the minimum amount of batters. She struck out three. In four innings of relief work this year, she has faced the minimum amount of batters (12) without allowing a hit or walk.

The Tigers head back to Bentonville, Arkansas next weekend for the 8-State Classic on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Feb. 15-17). Keep an eye on fhsuathletics.com for any alterations to the schedule.

Tiger Notes
-All but one batter in the Tiger starting lineup Sunday produced at least 1 hit in the game.
-Elise Capra hit her first collegiate home run in the 5th.
-Six of the nine players in the Tiger starting lineup had at least 1 RBI in the game.
-Terran Caldwell had a 3-hit game and now leads the team in batting average for the season at .500.
-Hailey Chapman has allowed nothing with 3 strikeouts in 4.0 innings of relief work this year, facing the minimum 12 batters.

Erik Stevenson had 13 points for Wichita State (12-11, 5-6 American Athletic Conference), which won its fourth consecutive game. Samajae Haynes-Jones added 12 points.

Caleb Daniels had 17 points for the Green Wave (4-18, 0-10), whose losing streak stretched to 12 games. Connor Crabtree added 17 points. Samir Sehic had 11 points.

Wichita State plays Cincinnati on the road next Sunday. Tulane takes on Tulsa at home on Thursday.

Big 12-leading K-State big run late to beat Baylor

WACO, Texas (AP) — Cartier Diarra had just hit a 3-pointer to put Kansas State back ahead at Baylor when coach Bruce Weber called a timeout.

Weber wanted to get his team reorganized defensively, telling them to get some stops and finish the last six minutes of the game right.

The Wildcats got the message and are now alone atop the Big 12 standings.

Kamau Stokes had 20 points, including his own 3 after Diarra’s that started the late 11-0 run, and K-State finally got past undermanned Baylor for a 70-63 victory Saturday night.

“We weren’t down a whole lot during the game. We knew that we had to make plays,” Stokes said. “It came down to who was going to be the tougher team, and I felt like we made the tougher plays. … Little plays changed that game for us.”

Stokes’ 3 during that run for the Wildcats (18-5, 8-2 Big 12), came after his defensive rebound.

Then down the stretch, Diarra managed to keep a ball from going out of bounds under the Baylor basket, and swiped the ball way ahead to Barry Brown for a breakaway dunk. When Baylor got within 3 in the final minute after Devonte Bandoo made a 3-pointer and two free throws, Stokes made four consecutive free throws.

“Just using my athleticism, and used a little hang time,” Diarra said of his big save and assist. “I threw it long and (Booker) ran and got it before the Baylor player. It looked really good I bet. It was a smart play.”

K-State has a littler margin in the Big 12 after No. 17 Iowa State (18-6, 7-4) lost at home to TCU earlier Saturday.

Brown, whose 3-pointer with 3:20 left wrapped up the 11-0 run for a 62-53 lead, had 13 points and six assists. Dean Wade had 12 points and Diarra 10.

Baylor (15-8, 6-4), already without two players out for the season with injuries, was missing starting senior guards Makai Mason, its leading scorer, and King McClure. Mason (bruised foot) and McClure (knee) had both played in a loss Wednesday at Texas that snapped the Bears’ six-game winning streak.

“Our effort was good enough to win, our execution wasn’t,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said. “As a coach, you hate it. Relating it to real life, you work really hard, you get a bad grade. You work really hard, you don’t get a paycheck. That’s how our guys feel.”

Bandoo led Baylor with 15 points. Freddie Gillespie and Jared Butler each had 13 points.

“I think they wore down at the end of the first half, and maybe the end of the second half,” Weber said. “Our experience made a difference. … They made the shots, made the plays. We executed and got stops when it counted.”

BIG PICTURE

Kansas St.: The Wildcats have won eight Big 12 games in a row, their longest conference winning streak since 11 in a row in the Big Eight in 1974. During the stretch, they did have a 65-53 loss at Texas A&M in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

Baylor: Going into a week when the Bears could have gone to the top of the Big 12, they instead suffered more injuries and consecutive losses for the first time this season.

BETTER BEYOND THE ARC

After going 3-of-14 on 3-pointers before the half, K-State made 6-of-12 after the break — including three in the 11-0 run.

“I think they just made a decision they’re not going to let Dean get it,” Weber said. “They were small, they didn’t have much depth and they just protected the paint. I don’t want to say dared us to shoot the 3. I thought we moved the ball, we had some good looks.”

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Kansas State, which this week also beat instate rival and No. 13 Kansas, has a chance to get ranked for the first time since falling out of the poll Dec. 17. The Wildcats were the preseason No. 12 team and were ranked in the first six polls, falling out from No. 25 after losing consecutive games in mid-December.

UP NEXT

Kansas State plays again in the Lone Star State, at Texas on Tuesday night.

Baylor is home Monday night against Oklahoma. It’s the third time this season the Bears play two Big 12 games in three days.

Tigers can’t overcome cold shooting in loss to Lions

JOPLIN, Mo. – Fort Hays State was held a season-low 35-percent shooting including only 32-percent in the second half and lost 78-66 to Missouri Southern State Saturday afternoon at the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center. The Tigers (14-8, 8-5 MIAA) have now lost three of their last four on the road while MSSU (19-5, 10-4 MIAA) remains unbeaten at home.

Mark Johnson Postgame Interview

Game Highlights

The Tigers were down six at the half but a 13-0 run by the Lions pushed their lead to 21. They would lead by as many as 25 midway through the second half an 11-0 run by the Tigers to close the game.

Elijah Clark scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead Southern. Cam Martin added 19 with nine rebounds and seven assists.
