Ellis County Extension Offers “Eat Healthy- Be Active” Workshops

K-State Research and Extension           The Ellis County Extension Office will offer three workshops on the theme “Eat Healthy-Be Active” to be held on three consecutive Mondays: April 22, April 29, and May 6.  The time for each session is 5:30-6:30 pm at the Extension Office meeting room, 601 Main Street in Hays.    The instructor for the workshops is Isaac Broeckelman, FHSU Health Promotion student.  The free workshops are offered in conjunction with Walk Kansas, but are open to anyone who would like to attend. Participants may attend one or more of the workshops as desired.  Please RSVP for each workshop to the Ellis County Extension Office at 785-628-9430 or [email protected].
           Dates and topics include:
April 22 – Tips for Losing Weight and Keeping It Off
Healthy eating and physical activity work hand in hand to help us live healthier lives. This workshop will give tips for losing weight and/or maintaining a healthy weight.   Learn how to determine your body mass index (BMI) and the amount of calories you need each day for a healthy weight.  Also learn weight loss strategies such as tips to eat less, keep track of what you eat, rethink your drinks and add activity to your day.
April 29 – Make Heathy Eating Part of Your Total Lifestyle
Small changes can make a big difference.  This workshop will use the “go, slow, whoa” concept for foods that should be eaten regularly and those that should be eaten only occasionally.  Learn to choose more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, less sodium and added sugar, and use the Nutrition Facts label as a guide to healthier eating.
May 6 –  Physical Activity is Key to Living Well
This workshop will feature the benefits of regular physical activity and specific recommendations for aerobic and strengthening activities.  Learn several simple strengthening exercises which you can do at home with minimum equipment.
The public is invited to attend these educational workshops.  To pre-register or for more information, contact Linda Beech at the Ellis County Extension Office, 785-628-9430.

Piggy Bank Beauty Contest and Story Hour for America Saves Week

K-State Research and Extension           Ellis County Extension and Hays Public Library are partnering to sponsor the America Saves Week story hour on Saturday, March 2 at the library, 1205 Main Street in Hays.  The event– in honor of America Saves Week this week– begins with silver dollar pancakes and money-theme children’s stories at 10:00 and winners of the Piggy Bank Beauty Contest are announced at 10:30 am. Prizes are provided by local financial institutions. Door prizes and parent resources will also be available.
Anyone who picked up a piggy bank for the contest should return it to the library by Friday at 5:00 pm to be considered in the judging.  About 90 piggy banks were claimed for the contest.
America Saves Week at the end of February is an annual opportunity for organizations to promote good savings behavior and a chance for individuals to assess their own saving status.  For more information, contact Linda Beech at the Ellis County Extension Office, 785-628-9430, or see www.kansassaves.org or www.americasavesweek.org.

It’s America Saves Week!

K-State Research and Extension           February 25 – March 2 is America Saves Week– an annual opportunity for organizations to promote good savings behavior and a chance for individuals to assess their own saving status.
This week, start small but think big with these suggestions from K-State Research and Extension and the Consumer Federation of America:
           • Start (or add to) an emergency fund. An emergency fund is your protection against unexpected expenses or job loss.
           • Track your spending. Knowing how you and your family spend money can help identify areas to reduce spending and increase saving.
           • Let go of bad habits and bank your savings. Find one or two spending habits to cut back on and bank the difference.
           • Take advantage of free money at work. Many employees turn down free money from their employer by not signing up for a work-related retirement program.
           • Go automatic! Pay yourself first by setting up automatic transfers at your financial institution from your checking to savings account or having a portion of your paycheck directly deposited into your savings. Savers who save automatically are more likely to be successful long-term.
For more information on saving, contact the Ellis County Extension Office or visit www.kansassaves.org.

Extension Offers Program on “Seafood At Its Best”

K-State Research and Extension           Seafood can be a beneficial part of a healthy diet.  It contributes many nutritional benefits to support a healthy heart and nervous system and reduce cancer risk.  Increasing popularity and seasonal sale prices have led to the availability of more seafood options in restaurants and supermarkets.  This Ellis County Extension program will explore the health benefits of eating seafood and tips for selecting, handling, storing and cooking seafood.  A seafood recipe booklet is included.
The program will be presented by Linda Beech, County Extension Agent, at four locations in Ellis County:
•  Monday, Mar 4, 12:00 noon, Library, Ellis
•  Tuesday, Mar 5, 7:00 pm, The Elms, Victoria
•  Tuesday, Mar 12, 7:00 pm, Community Center, Schoenchen
•  Wednesday, Mar 13, 12:00 noon,  Extension Office, Hays
Plan to attend any session which meets your schedule and location preferences.  All programs are free.  Bring a lunch to enjoy during the noon programs if desired.
A minimum attendance is needed for each location, so pre-registration is important.  Please RSVP to the Ellis County Extension Office for all locations at 785-628-9430 or [email protected].

Walk Kansas Begins March 17; Register Teams Now

K-State Research and ExtensionCan you meet the challenge of walking across– or around– the state?  Walk Kansas is an 8-week fitness program from K-State Research and Extension encouraging teams of six people to walk for their health beginning March 17 through May 11.

Walk Kansas encourages teams of family members, friends and co-workers to cover the equivalent of the 423-mile distance across Kansas in eight weeks.  If that doesn’t seem far enough, teams can sign up to walk across and back (800 miles) or the distance around the state’s perimeter (1200 miles).

The state-wide fitness program has become popular with team members sharing the goal to improve health, and also is being incorporated into worksite wellness programs.  Near 20,000 Kansans participated last year.

The cost for Ellis County Walk Kansas is only $3 per person which provides statewide program support, weekly educational newsletters, learning activities, motivational prizes and a closing celebration.  Participants may purchase an optional Walk Kansas t-shirt for an additional cost.

Walk Kansas is fun, motivational and a great way to build a healthy lifestyle.  Pick up a team registration packet now and register your team by March 8 at the Ellis County Extension Office, 601 Main Street, Suite A, in Hays, 785-628-9430.

For more information about the local program, visit the Ellis County Extension website at www.ellis.ksu.edu or call Linda Beech, Ellis County Extension Agent for family and consumer sciences, at 785-628-9430.  Information regarding the statewide program may be found at www.walkkansas.org.
