Extension Program on Cooking With Beans & Legumes

           The Ellis County Extension Office will host a free noon-hour educational program on “Cooking with Beans and Legumes” on Tuesday, April 24 at 12:00 noon at the Ellis County Extension Office meeting room, 601 Main Street in Hays.
           Beans and legumes are loaded with nutrients, are inexpensive and linked to lower rates of chronic disease. Current recommendations include 3 cups of beans per week for individuals.  Beans are available in many varieties and forms and can be used to prepare delicious healthy dishes.
           Connie Bretz, Walnut Creek Extension District Agent, will present this program which will include tips on selecting and cooking beans and legumes. Learn ways to include more beans in your diet so you can take advantage of the numerous health benefits associated with eating more beans  Recipes and food sampling will also be available.
           Bring a lunch to enjoy during the program, if desired.  Beverages will be provided.  RSVP to the Ellis County Extension Office by Monday, April 23 to reserve your spot, 785-628-9430.

Women in Agriculture Workshop

Preserve your family’s possessions, pass assets on to the next generation, and minimize death taxes. These are just a few of the reasons why women who are involved in agriculture should attend the “Women in Agriculture Workshop”.

 It will be held in Hays at the KSU Ag Research Center on Tuesday, April 10th beginning at 5:45 p.m. Workshop topics are “Who Gets Grandma’s Yellow Pie Plate?”, Internet Resources to Sharpen Your Management Skills, and Essential Elements of a Sound Estate Plan.

 A free meal will be served by the sponsoring agencies. RSVP is requested by Thursday, April 5th by calling the Ellis County Extension Office at 628-9430.

Annual Ag Safety Awareness Program

Farming next to mining is still one of the most hazardous occupations and many times fatal accidents involve more experienced farmers, and family members. The Annual Ag Safety Awareness Day is planned for Wednesday, March 14th in Hays at the KSU Ag Research Center from 8:45 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.

Two farmers will be sharing their real life story of how a farming accident has affected them and their families. Some of the other topics will be: farm safety – what we see out there (KS. Highway Patrol), electrical and natural gas safety, and anhydrous ammonia hazards.

 A free noon meal is provided, all interested people are invited to attend the entire day or part of the day’s program. If needing further information contact the Ellis County Farm Bureau at 785-628-2831.

Extension to Host “Cash In With Coupons” Program

Newspapers and the internet are full of them..they’re COUPONS and manufacturers try to entice us to purchase their products by using them. Learn to “Cash In With Coupons” at a free Extension program on Monday, March 12 at 12:00 noon at the Ellis County Extension Office meeting room, 601 Main Street, Suite A, in Hays.  The guest speaker is Jamie Rathbun, Ellsworth County Extension agent, author of statewide Extension programs and materials on couponing.

If you want to use coupons but don’t know where to start or want to become more efficient with your time and money while using coupons, plan to attend this free Extension noon-hour program.  You will also learn strategies to maximize the value of your coupons and how to organize them to help save your time and sanity.

Bring a lunch to enjoy during the program, if desired.  Beverages will be provided.  A minimum attendance is required to hold this program, so pre-registration is requested by Friday, March 9. You can’t hardly pickup a popular farm press magazine without seeing something about cover crops. Come hear what K-State Research and Extension has been doing to investigate the feasibility of cover crops in Kansas.

Topics of discussion will be – Cover Crop research for western Kansas; wheat, cover crop, sorghum and soybean rotation; cover crops effects on soil; and there will be time for your questions.

A free noon meal will be served on Tuesday, Feb. 28th at 12 noon. The program will start at 1:00 p.m. and should conclude by 4:00 p.m. It will be held at the Libenthal Catholic Church.

Mother Nature is always changing and adapting, and thus the weeds are too. Come get the latest updates on roundup resistant weeds and there control, on Monday, February 20th. Other topics discussed will be general weed control recommendations for field crops, using the KSU weed control guide and there will be plenty of time for questions.

Continuing Education Units (CEU) will be offered for commercial applicators and certified crop advisors.

K-State Weed Control specialist will be presenting.

Alfalfa Production Program – Feb. 17th Hays

Farmers if you grow some alfalfa you might want to brush-up on how you can better maximize your alfalfa production.

Plan to join us Friday, February 17th at 12 noon for a free meal and a brief program. Topics of discussion will be good planting practices for conventional or no-till, tips for keeping a good stand – weed and insect control, fertility, cutting management and alfalfa cash rental arrangements and rates.

The program will be held at the Ellis County Extension office back meeting room at 601 Main Street in Hays on Friday, February 17th at noon.
